Holiday Traditions: Chia Pets and Rice Krispies Treats!

To prove to naysayers that I'm still terminally with it, I'm now on Twitter. I say nothing of any interest there, and mainly use it to plug articles you've already read, but if you're interested...yeeeaaah.

Got a new Christmassy survey: In the comments, talk about your weird holiday traditions.

Everyone strings up lights. Everyone decorates trees. Everybody exchanges presents. We know this. But what are some of the more peculiar traditions that make your holiday celebrations unique to you? What stupid, strange things must you do to make December feel complete?

I know one of mine. I've been writing about it for years. It's time for my annual Chia Pet project!

A few years ago, I dedicated myself to making sure that no Christmas season came and went without growing a Chia Pet. The results were iffy. Last year, the saga continued, and the results were again iffy. It stands to reason that the third time will be the charm.

What do Chia Pets have to do with Christmas? Oh, please. They have everything to do with Christmas. Tagging with The Clapper to weasel its way into the pantheon of "easy gifts nobody wants," Chia Pets are firmly situated as holiday classics. You're never looking for them while you're out shopping for presents, but they're always there. They're never a good idea, but they always seem like one. They're one of the quintessential "misgifts" -- presents given to and from people who really have no idea what the other person's interests are.

On the other hand, is there anyone whose life wouldn't be vastly improved by pottery that grows?

Obviously a rhetorical question. We all know the answer.

I chose the "turtle" Chia Pet for 2009, ostensibly because I like turtles, but really because it was the only version CVS had on sale. Given my previous mishaps while growing Chia Pets, I made sure to follow the directions exactly this time. No shortcuts. No assumptions. If this year's Chia Pet doesn't grow correctly, I'm suing and/or committing corporate arson.

Oh, and speaking of things ostensible: Click here to buy your own Chia Pet...obstensibly because I think you'll enjoy it, but really because I'll make 20 cents from Amazon if you buy anything after clicking that link. Honesty is the best policy, especially as it relates to anything Chia.

Another oddball holiday tradition of mine: Food that doubles as an art project. This Rice Krispies Treats "Snowman Kit" is simply a Christmasized version of that Halloween thing I reviewed last year. I found it in Toys "R" Us, which is kind of odd, and probably explains why it was the only one in the store. In a battered box, and located on the floor. Still rang up okay. I'm assuming it's been poisoned. Will find out soon.

Put aside your misbegotten notions of Rice Krispies Treats, because making them is a process. From liquefying marshmallow goo to trying to coat 50,000 cereal bits with said goo, I made the kind of mess usually reserved for seven course dinner parties.

Skipping past the boring parts, your goal is to get the mixture into the included pan, leaving you with an enormous, snowman-shaped Rice Krispies Treat to decorate.

My snowman sucks, but he didn't have to. My artistic vision only went as far as "I want to eat a giant Rice Krispies Treat," so I can't blame Kellogg's for how horrible he looks.

The kit includes gobs of icing and, interestingly, a set of edible watercolors with which to paint your snowman to life. I totally did not expect painting to come into play, but it works as advertised.

That's two oddball holiday traditions down. Now I just have to lap blood from a dying cat.

Every year, for the last 6 or 7 years, I get up at 2:30 AM on Christmas morning. I turn on the A Christmas Story marathon, sort the presents, get the newspaper, and have whatever’s in my stocking for breakfast.

Also, my sister and I may carry on something that we started last year. We went to 9 different stores over the course of 3 hours and bought as much Cranberry Splash as possible.

For my family, it’s not Christmas until we see what crazy thing my Uncle Tom did with our gifts. It started one year when he wrapped our stuff with sheet metal. Last year, he encased a $20 bill he wrapped in plastic in concrete that he poured into flower pots and “planted” fake poinsettias in. The best year, however, was when we unwrapped what we thought was our gift to find a treasure map which lead to another map, etc. We had to climb trees, drive down to the nearby park, and even dig a hole to find our gifts. Then, when we dug them up we found a short length of pipe, with the ends capped using some sort of crazy bonding glue so we had to use a hacksaw to get into them.
Our family also hides a pickle ornament on our tree and whoever finds it, gets a little prize. It is actually a German tradition, but everyone outside of my family I mention it to reacts by exclaiming, “That’s weird.”

We always did the Italian tradition of the seven fish dinner on Christmas Eve which makes most people think we’re nuts.

It is not officially Christmas until I hear “Dominick the Italian Christmas Donkey”. I used to hear it all the time on the radio in Jersey, but not since I moved down here to No. VA. Looks like its time to find the .mp3 and drive my coworkers nuts!

Also, XE on twitter? Consider yourself followed!

BTW Matt, you may want to add a link to XE on your twitter page’s profile section. You know, self-promotion an’ all. :-)

We always did the pickle ornament too- who ever found the pickle first on the tree got an extra little gift.

The other Christmas tradition we had growing up- my brother getting complicated toys that required setting up, which lead to us listening from the living room to our dad in my brother’s room, swearing under his breath trying to put these things together. I bet many of you had this same tradition? :)

Ann, you are back, was wondering what happened to you. You introduced us to Jonathan Coulton, and are responsible for kick ass graphics ;-D

I had to comment if only to register ever-so-slight disappointment that the Krispie snowman isn’t a MISTA Snowman. I can’t get enough of that guy. I say Matt holds a contest to make the best Mista Krispie Snowman.

…but…but…I want The Clapper, Matt.

I would like to be annoying and remind Matt that the ghosts still remain in the comments. You can’t have Christmas with ghosts unless you’re scrooge.

Hey Tresjolie! Yeah, I guess I’ve been kinda absent from XE, huh? I got a new job last november, was laid off from it during the summer (best thing that ever happened to me was leaving but it was still depressing being out of work), but now have a new job! Huzzah! One that will give me ample time to plot more artwork! Since you have been indoctrinated into Jonathan Coulton, let me figure out a way to introduce you to his cohorts Paul and Storm: pure awesome comedy music. Maybe their lyrics will find a way into some artwork this year…

for some reason my family makes sweet and sour chicken every year on christmas eve. i guess we did it one year when i was a kid and it stuck for some reason. That’s pretty odd, i think.

Chestnuts roasted by guidedbyvenkman @ 12/04/2009 9:17 PM

My family all piles into the car and drives around town listening to Xmas music and looking at decorations. We then crown the most gaudy, tacky house the “Griswold House” for that year and they win our utmost admiration!

Also, we hide as many small gifts as we can in the Christmas tree, so that on Xmas morning, just when we think the gifts are done, someone will remember “wait! There’s still the gifts IN the tree!”

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 12/04/2009 9:40 PM

Muppet Baby= You just gave me a great idea. However, the thought of my nephew tearing the tree apart looking for his Batman action figure gift keeps me from going through with the idea. 5 years old, and he would tear the Berlin Wall down with his bare hands if he knew there was a Spiderman action figure for him on the other side.

I can’t believe Umaga died. It’s sad that lots of wrestlers have died relatively young. Eddie Guerrero, Andrew “Test” Martin, Owen Hart, Davey Boy Smith, John Tenta, several Von Erich brothers, and so forth. Rest in piece you guys.

We’re expecting a cold snap tonight. It doesn’t help that I’m still fighting off a cold that I caught during the week.

Word of advice, when you set up your Christmas lights, make sure that the cats can’t reach them. We all know what happened at Clark’s house. I want that Cousin Eddie’s RV decoration that they’re selling at Kohl’s. Hopefully, I can go in the next week.

Strange Christmas tradition, well, coming from a Mexican American family, there’s nothing I can really find strange. We do have tamales for Christmas dinner. My mother and sister light up some incencse sticks. Hope I spelled it right. What I love about Christmas is, at night, I look towards the Eastern sky, and see the Constellation Orion clearly, with Sirius following him like a faithful pet dog. Also the Pleiades can be seen with binoculars. It’s the little things that make this month great.

Glad to hear that you have a new job, Ann, and yes, I do know who Paul and Storm are, they did the Way Too Early Christmas Song, which I think you may have posted last year.

Chestnuts roasted by Tresjolie9 @ 12/04/2009 11:32 PM

Oh yeah!, I meant to say that was my crazy go nuts Christmas Tradition :D

@mandy_reeves to answer your question from the previous thread, you totally guessed who I represent…as to which celeb it from those three, well…..that’ll stay a secret. I will say this, he is not a Jonas brother.

It’s Krispa Snowman!

I never wanted a Chia Pet until now. That turtle is adorable. My cats would eat it though.

Stopping in to say hi before I catch up on the Advent! Hooray Christmas!

I used to go through the Sears Wish Book or JC Penney catalog and make a Christmas list. So much for THAT tradition…
