Cheese Baskets, Santa Vaders, Alien Massagers.

Surely I'm not the only one who spends the holiday season pilfering through -- but never ordering from -- the Harry and David catalog?

I'm guessing the company is best known for its "fruit of the month" deals, but during Christmastime, anyone on their mailing list is certain to receive no less than 500 glossy catalogs detailing their insane assortment of gourmet food baskets and fully-cooked turkeys. Even though we've all had enough experience with "gift basket food" to know that it sucks, they arrange and photograph everything so perfectly, you can't help but feel that you're missing out.

Course, the prices are a little, uh, elusive. That basket shown on the lower left costs 300 bucks. There are far cheaper and smaller baskets in the catalog, but if you're going to roll the dice on a meal that comes in a basket through the mail, it may as well be the one that arrives with 86 species of cheese.

Have any of you placed Harry and David orders? If so, I demand reviews in the comments.

I've been tracking down all of this year's new stocking stuffers...even though it's a huge waste of money, because I will never look at this junk once I'm done writing about it. Which will be, oh, a few minutes from now. I guess I could donate this stuff to charity, but that sounds like it'd require walking.

First up, the Homedics Atom Massager -- a stocking-sized version of Homedics' larger and more expensive methods of mmaakkiinngg yyoouu ttaallkk lliikkee tthhiiss. The Atom Massagers come in red and green, and they're sold alongside all of the candy canes at Target, so there's no denying that they're Christmas editions.

Looking like a cross between a Wall-E bootleg and a thermal detonator, you can press the topside button to release oodles of vibrating energy, set to a smallscale lights show, and sound effects not unlike those created by a Dustbuster. As a massager, it's weak, but as a getaway ship for my tiny-sized E.T. figure, it's miraculous.

And on the right, a Nintendogs Mini-Pup. I'm totally surprised to see that the Nintendogs line of plushies has lasted so long, with many toy stores still featuring dedicated Nintendogs sections after all this time. Like the alien robot testicle massager, this "Mini-Pup" was also sold in Target's stocking stuffer section. I have no idea how they came up with a $5 price tag, because it's the kind of doll you'd find in a ten-cent claw machine at the world's most unkempt casino arcade.

Next up, Star Wars Holiday Bobbleheads, ready to add all kinds of geeky joy to your mantle full of tired snowglobes. I picked up Darth Vader and C-3P0. To keep the costs reasonable, these bobbleheads do away with the more typical resin ingredients, opting for a cheap plastic. Really though, they look no different than the pricier bobbleheads, and in fact, they're less likely to crack in half when you inevitably drop them on the floor.

Finally, a series of Pokemon tree ornaments. I'm not going to tell you exactly how many I bought, but I'll admit that it was at least two. The standard Christmas tree ball ornament is given a Pokeball spin, with different pocket monsters nesting comfortably inside. They're cute, and if I'm deducing their construction correctly, I'll be able to rip the Pokemon from their homes and use them as pencil toppers in the post-season.

Course, the arrival of a Bulbasaur tree ornament sets in motion my yearly debate as to when it's acceptable to put up on Christmas tree. We only do live trees in this apartment, so the timing is critical. I'm thinking...right now?

I routinely receive a couple of H&D assortments a year, either from my directors of from political contacts. The pears are indeed glorious. And the stacked boxes are always disappointing, as mexicon pointed out. So much pretty shredded paper, so little sugary/savory goodness. Though if you get one with the chocolate covered graham crackers, hoard that sh*t, my friends.

Signed up for the X-E Gift Exchange, whoo! CHRISTMAS MAGIC.

I put my tree up 3 weeks ago!!! But then again, I’m Canadian so our thanksgiving was already long over. I also have a little fake tree so I don’t have to worry about it dying.
I’m way too into Christmas this year. AND I LOVE IT!!!

Chestnuts roasted by jennyroo @ 12/02/2009 4:49 PM

Man, I put my tree up on Halloween night each year!

Fake trees FTW.

There’s a Plusle+Minun ornament. I’d put it on my tree. But where are the mudkips?!

There is some kind of H&D candy my aunt likes. Moose mix or something?

We are going with color change Hot Wheels and Bakugan for stocking stuffers this year, our house already has a ridiculous number of spring loaded robot balls and it will get bigger since my wife never turns down a new one in the store.

Ah, but it will be the kind of thing my kids read web sites about in 25 years so what the heck.

how about using pokemon pencil toppers as christmas ornaments? admit it you already have them.

O snap! My hideous breakup fruit rears its ugly head again!

Now that I think about it, the fruit baskets were the best thing that guy ever did for me. I don’t have many fond memories but here I am, still talking about that damned fruit, with you all. Praise Dorklan.

Rev- Don’t worry. I won’t judge you. Mostly because I do not know, nor want to know what you’re speaking of.

A couple of things… The Harry and David pears really are as good as advertised, but are scandalously expensive. You could buy a small car for the cost of a box of those things.

Also, Re: the Massager…. you’re doing it wrong. ;-)

My husband and I have a tradition of buying a new cutesy ornament every year (hardly original, I know). Maybe we should look into getting one of those Pokemans this year. If there’s a Bidoof one, I’m sold.

Ooooh X-E Secret Santa! Dude, I so totally want to participate but I don’t know if I can. Hopefully I’ll know for sure by next week and can get all signed up and shiz.

For my mom’s birthday we got her a popcorn popper and she loves it, so yesterday for Christmas I bought her a collection of premium gourmet popcorn from a department store. I wonder if there is a taste difference between popcorn whose kernels are white, yellow, red, and blue.

Also, after Christmas, I like to buy whatever Hillshire Farms collections are still in stores at a discount. I love sausage and cheese.

My momma has one of those massagers. I don’t think it’s the Christmas edition though. I say go ahead and put the tree up right now. No sense waitin. As for flippin through catalogs and never orderin from them, yeah I do that . Also I want that pokemon ornament. And yup ,I like Mudkipz lol.

Ooh… I really want to do the SS thing, but I’ll probably use my works address.

Loving the advent and the posts.

I streamed the xe jukbox at Hell’s Kitchen, where I work, today. All my co-workers were greatful from the change from the drab holiday music selection we normally have going. ( and it was pretty hilarious when ‘xe dogs’ came on too :)

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 12/02/2009 6:31 PM

*Sighs with deep happiness…THANK YOU, Matt for doing what you do best – Christmas – oh so well.

XE SS? OK, that might be really, really fun. It would please me with more Xmas magic than giving a gift to the people I usually give gifts to!

Guise, the difficult clients get the spackle/cork the ass cheese while the cool ones get the summer sausage and strawberry candies. I am pretty passive aggressive that way.
I had a dream last night that I got an Imperial Shuttle for Christmas. Not really sure wgere that one came from. I’m thinking Kung Pao.

Those Star Wars bobbleheads are nice, but OMG, Pokemon ornaments!

I recently bought the NOES DVD box set and am currently watching New Nightmare. Because everybody knows Christmas is the proper time to review your favourite horror franchises, not Halloween. Right.

Chestnuts roasted by Kapprika @ 12/02/2009 8:54 PM

Mandy it’s Moose Munch and it’s to die for. My MIL always gets everybody a bag for Christmas. I don’t think I’ve ever had anything else from H&D but would like to.

Chestnuts roasted by ericnrosesmom @ 12/02/2009 9:00 PM

I put up my tree yesterday, but yes, it’s fake. Took me all morning, too. Like Matt, I have a ton of ornaments. Actually, that’s a good thing. My tree is a little on the skimpy side – it needs all the ornaments it can get.

(And yeah, I may have to look around for those Pokemon ornaments myself. I’d love a Jigglypuff on my tree.)

My parents received Henry and David fruit baskets for years. The man who owned the fishing vessel my commercial fisherman stepfather worked for used to send his men fruit baskets every Christmas. They were always the same – decent fruit with a small jelly and a couple of random hard candies. I still have one of the jelly jars. It now holds extra buttons that come with shirts and pants.

Speaking of H&D, I found another catalog from a similar company in the mail today that made me happier than getting the Sears Wish Book again – Swiss Colony. Swiss Colony is pretty much the same thing as H&D, with cheese trays, meat, breakfast boxes, etc…but they always seemed to have the coolest catalogs. They knew how to make everything looks so tempting, especially their amazing mile-high tortes, cakes, cheesecakes, and pies. Nobody anywhere beats their petit fours. My sisters and I used to beg for a box of those every year.

What is wrong with this country? Rudolph is on CBS right now and the majority of the commercials are LOWE’s and DISCOVER CARD?!!
I want more toy commercials and I want them NOW!

Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 12/02/2009 9:27 PM

Hey guys! Not to completely change the subject, but have you guys seen the website thisman.org? My speculation is that it’s viral marketing for the new Nightmare on Elm Street! What do you think?

Chestnuts roasted by Ricky @ 12/02/2009 9:32 PM

Ricky, thisman is creepy as hell. You may be right though.

And I would love to partake in the Secret Santa thing, but looking at the postal deadlines, and seeing as how I would probably draw a name outside of Canada, I’d end up either paying $26 in shipping, or sending it…yesterday.

Chestnuts roasted by Tutsuro @ 12/02/2009 9:48 PM

Those Harry and David catalogs are evil, someone once ordered you some fruit, 20 years ago, you’ll be getting Harry and David catalogs the rest of your life. While I love me some pears that are edible with a spoon, I don’t know if I’ve had anything else from that catalog in awhile, but I perpetually receive it.

Chestnuts roasted by Tresjolie9 @ 12/02/2009 10:26 PM

Secret Santa is sooo tempting…at least I have a couple of days to decide. Work address all the way, kb! I don’t want anybody google earthing my house–not that I don’t trust you guys… ;)

I <3 snowmen.

There is a H&D outlet near me as well. I've had a few snacks from there, but that's it. It's a little pricey, but it's good stuff. The store is fun too. Little fancy mustards and sauces are fun for me, I guess.
