Cheese Baskets, Santa Vaders, Alien Massagers.

Surely I'm not the only one who spends the holiday season pilfering through -- but never ordering from -- the Harry and David catalog?

I'm guessing the company is best known for its "fruit of the month" deals, but during Christmastime, anyone on their mailing list is certain to receive no less than 500 glossy catalogs detailing their insane assortment of gourmet food baskets and fully-cooked turkeys. Even though we've all had enough experience with "gift basket food" to know that it sucks, they arrange and photograph everything so perfectly, you can't help but feel that you're missing out.

Course, the prices are a little, uh, elusive. That basket shown on the lower left costs 300 bucks. There are far cheaper and smaller baskets in the catalog, but if you're going to roll the dice on a meal that comes in a basket through the mail, it may as well be the one that arrives with 86 species of cheese.

Have any of you placed Harry and David orders? If so, I demand reviews in the comments.

I've been tracking down all of this year's new stocking stuffers...even though it's a huge waste of money, because I will never look at this junk once I'm done writing about it. Which will be, oh, a few minutes from now. I guess I could donate this stuff to charity, but that sounds like it'd require walking.

First up, the Homedics Atom Massager -- a stocking-sized version of Homedics' larger and more expensive methods of mmaakkiinngg yyoouu ttaallkk lliikkee tthhiiss. The Atom Massagers come in red and green, and they're sold alongside all of the candy canes at Target, so there's no denying that they're Christmas editions.

Looking like a cross between a Wall-E bootleg and a thermal detonator, you can press the topside button to release oodles of vibrating energy, set to a smallscale lights show, and sound effects not unlike those created by a Dustbuster. As a massager, it's weak, but as a getaway ship for my tiny-sized E.T. figure, it's miraculous.

And on the right, a Nintendogs Mini-Pup. I'm totally surprised to see that the Nintendogs line of plushies has lasted so long, with many toy stores still featuring dedicated Nintendogs sections after all this time. Like the alien robot testicle massager, this "Mini-Pup" was also sold in Target's stocking stuffer section. I have no idea how they came up with a $5 price tag, because it's the kind of doll you'd find in a ten-cent claw machine at the world's most unkempt casino arcade.

Next up, Star Wars Holiday Bobbleheads, ready to add all kinds of geeky joy to your mantle full of tired snowglobes. I picked up Darth Vader and C-3P0. To keep the costs reasonable, these bobbleheads do away with the more typical resin ingredients, opting for a cheap plastic. Really though, they look no different than the pricier bobbleheads, and in fact, they're less likely to crack in half when you inevitably drop them on the floor.

Finally, a series of Pokemon tree ornaments. I'm not going to tell you exactly how many I bought, but I'll admit that it was at least two. The standard Christmas tree ball ornament is given a Pokeball spin, with different pocket monsters nesting comfortably inside. They're cute, and if I'm deducing their construction correctly, I'll be able to rip the Pokemon from their homes and use them as pencil toppers in the post-season.

Course, the arrival of a Bulbasaur tree ornament sets in motion my yearly debate as to when it's acceptable to put up on Christmas tree. We only do live trees in this apartment, so the timing is critical. I'm thinking...right now?

I must have those Pokemon ornaments. MUST HAVE!

Consider that the live trees on the lots now were probably cut back in September. They’ve been living dead for that long. I say put the thing up already!

I think that there has never been and will never be a better time to put your tree up than when Bulbasaur becons you to.

The caramel apples from Harry and David are the thing to get, if they still make them.

I like the Fiji’s catalog. Summer Sausage and Cheese Log! Inedible, but festive.

Those pokemon ornaments will be mine. Oh, yes. They will be mine. Gotta catch em all!

The cheese set with trail balongia (is that spelled right?) is what I’ve gotten in past years from Harry and David, but I’m not sure if it’s offered any more.

Think I’m gonna have to bite on the Pokeornaments. I hope there’s a Torchic or Chimchar. Or dare I say it…

I liek Mudkips.

Rev- This is a family thread! We don’t need any more of your scandalous chatter of logs and sausages!

The Darth Vader is nice, but he looked like he was having more fun in the snow building battle stations…

Last day of work for a month!

Yes!

I love buying the stocking stuffers for my son, but the older he gets (10 this year) the more expensive it becomes. I’ve considered skipping everything but candy because I could buy him a nice gift with what I spend on the stocking, but he’d be disappointed and we can’t have that!

Marty_McFly
I got to ask, what industry do you work in that you get the ENTIRE month off!?!?

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 12/02/2009 2:58 PM

Piplup and Pachirisu would rock as an ornaments, though Chimchar as a Christmas tree light…

Thanks Matt I probably came close to being fired by laughing so hard at Dec. 2. It’s good to see the band start to get back together.

I’m the PR guy for a celebrity. His last appearance was today (which had just over 4000 screaming girls…..it was nuts), so I dont have to work, yet keep getting paid, until January.

I actually get 5 1/2 weeks. ;)

Matt, I would say it all depends on how much work/attention you are willing to put into your tree. You can put it up now if you do the following:
1) Tree-shop wisely. Look for a tree with relatively soft needles and supple branches. Stiff means a dead tree and you’ll be screwed from the start.
2) (arguably the hardest part) don’t let the lot guys cut your stump. Do it yourself when you get home and get the tree up and watered right away, quick as you can. Make sure you chop off at least a few inches.
3) Water regularly, especially the first few days. If your tree is healthy it should drink 3-5 liters a day for the first few days and around 2 liters a day for the next few weeks. DON’T LET IT DRY UP! Once the stump dries out and closes up it will stop drinking and you can expect a dead tree in a week or so.
4) Put a little sugar in the water. (Not too much, though.) That is essentially what those tree-life bottles are, anyway– sugar water.

How much it drinks = how healthy it is. Last year my parents’ tree was actually growing after a month, so it can be done.

I just finished ordering our company’s clients cheese and food baskets for the year. I would leave it up to our front desk girl but I enjoy doing it too much. Am i wrong for that?

Anyway, great post. And Happy Birthday, Faith!

When I was about five, I wanted nothing more than one of those cheese baskets. Mainly due to the colors. When I finally got one, I realized the bright colors weren’t actually the cheeses but rather the wax coatings. I think I got a smoked cheese, and I can’t stand smoked flavor so that was a failure.

I wonder if I can get those star wars bobble heads in Canada. I often go to the Canadian equivalent of stores mentioned on this site, and am sadly disappointed by the selection (toys r us being the main offender).

Very Happy to see Mista Snowman back! Wouldn’t mind seeing a certain celebrity interviewer as well.

A ritzy construction company I worked for received a huge H & D assortment one year. It was one of the “stacked” gift boxes arrangements. The choices were multiple, but then inside each box it seemed like the quantity of goodie was sparse (a la a bag of potato chips).

However, the pears are glorious and not to be f’d with. If you like pears, H & D’s will blow your mind. They’re huge–one pear can be eaten over the course of 2-3 days. The chocolate covered dried fruits are excellent also.

I’ve never had any H & D since b/c of the price. I go to the website often to oogle the baskets though. Hmm. Perhaps I should add it to my list this year…

I set the group as private, so only the person who draws your name will find out your address. Also, just FYI, you may want to make your log-in name and your first name the same thing. It also does not require a last name, so I just listed velouria_78 for both on my account. Not that it really matters, but just in case that’s a concern for anyone.

So, yeah! Spending limit is the $10-15 range. If you want to make a wishlist, it’s an option. You can include a URL for the item if you’d like it to go to your Amazon page. The deadline for sign up is Dec. 12, then you’ll get an email from Elfster to let you know who you’re buying for.

Mista Snowman would be so proud of us…

I’ve only looked through the H&D catalogs, thinking, “Wow, they sure do think highly of their stuff to be chargng this much.”

Darth Vader looks so…happy dressed up as Santa. Christmas magic, indeed.

I don’t get Pokemon. Literally and figuratively. Not only do I not buy the stuff, I just don’t understand the appeal.

velouria_78, I don’t think I’ll be able to participate, but I’m anxious to see how this works.

Happy birthday, Faith!

Chestnuts roasted by Teddy Ray @ 12/02/2009 3:51 PM

There’s a Harry & David outlet store near here, and as with most outlet stores the stuff is relatively cheap. Cheap enough that the average mortal can afford things from there. Not $300 baskets of cheese, mind you, but some of the less extravagant items. Everything I’ve ever had from there, from fruit to caramel corn to Gummi Mooses, has been extremely good.

Chestnuts roasted by Ragnarok @ 12/02/2009 4:03 PM

Rev. – We know you love the fruit baskets. ;)

Bill and Teddy Ray – Thank you so much!

Chestnuts roasted by Faith @ 12/02/2009 4:05 PM

Bill – I’m stuck with the thought now that your company gives people constipation in a basket for christmas…allllll that cheese
