X-E’s 2009 Christmas Season HAS BEGUN!

Over the ground, there's a mantle of white. Something something. Merry Christmas.

Indeed, X-E's 2009 Christmas Season has begun! Is it wrong that I'm already depressed that it'll be over in 25 days?

We've got our radio tuned to the all-Christmas station, and hints of gaudy, snowy baubles peppering the apartment like a growing infestation of magical holiday ants. Lots of cheap wine, too.

I've cleared as much of my work schedule as possible, which should leave ample time for pine scents (actual and fabricated), tinsel, and those awesome bags of all red-and-green peanut M&M's. I'm stoked. Beyond stoked.

As for what's in store for X-E this month: Hopefully a barrage of bullshit. 25 days isn't a lot of time, especially considering that I gave Halloween almost two full months of coverage. Christmas deserves 5x more attention than Halloween, so I'll do my best to ensure a steady flow of ho ho ho.

Remember to share stories about your own ongoing holiday celebrations in the comments section. Don't worry about being trivial. Any person who can deal with X-Entertainment at this time of year is exactly the type of person who wants to read about total strangers drinking eggnog and ordering presents from Amazon.

The Advent Calendar has begun, too! Vegas odds strongly favor me not finishing it, because not all holiday traditions are good ones. But, Christmas is a time for miracles, so don't count me out yet. PS, if you're confused by today's entry, I'd suspect that you missed the crazy June update to the 2008 Calendar.

Now, onto the true meat of the season: Overpriced happy junk!

Uncle Louis fans, today is your day: There's a new pair of National Lampoon's Christmas Vacation "Ultimate Collector's Edition" DVDs out now, for both standard and Blu-ray players. (The Blu-ray edition costs about ten bucks more. I don't have a Blu-ray player, but I bought that version anyway. You'll learn why in a minute.)

You're going to want this, and not just because it comes in a neat, Chevy-drenched tin. Trust me, Christmas Vacation fans would be buying these even if there were no DVDs inside.

It isn't totally unusual for overpriced re-releases to come with some kind of freebie, but this one comes with EIGHT of them. And they're incredible! Suffice to say, I would've bought everything in this tin separately at full retail.

Your Christmas bonuses will include:

  • Four Christmas Vacation drink coasters, including one that's Aunt Bethany-themed. The fact that I now own an Aunt Bethany-themed anything is enough to ensure that the 2009 Christmas season has nowhere to go but down.
  • An "I Survived a Griswold Family Christmas" button, complete with Wally World moose photo.
  • A Wally World Santa cap, one size fits all. I'll give you one guess where the hat is now. Give up?
  • A package of "Instant Snow," which works exactly like the kind I reviewed back in 2007. I cannot believe that my DVD came with instant snow. Cannot.

...and there's one final collectible, but before I show it to you, I demand the same kind of tongue-flicking drumroll that Clark demanded from his hemorrhoid-having mother-in-law before the Great Christmas Light Faux Pas of 1989.

Oh, hell yes. It's a miniature replica of those godlike MOOSE MUGS! While fringe entrepreneurs have made a small fortune selling the real deals, this cute, tiny, plastic version is officially licensed, and officially the most wonderful thing that I could ever potentially fit in my mouth.

Here's the catch: The miniature moose mugs only come with the Blu-ray versions of the set. If you go for the Standard Ultimate Collector's Edition, you're not only entering a slippery slope of oxymora, but you're depriving yourself of the greatest tiny glass ever. I've been slow to join the ranks of the Blu-ray army, but now I will, and I have a Barbie-scale novelty glass to thank. Click here to order yours.

Logically, we now jump from gimmicky DVDs to Play-Doh.

The folks at Play-Doh HQ always cook something up for the holidays, but this is one of their better efforts in recent years. The new Play-Doh "Gift Box" contains a few mini-tubs of you-know-what, along with a dozen molds and cutters to help turn your Play-Doh into nontoxic tributes to Christmas.

I could write endlessly (actually, I have) of my support for mixing classic gifts like Play-Doh into the pile of gifts that kids actually want for Christmas. Swat away the latest video games and technogizmos; this is the only time of year that these old faithfuls can truly shine. In the great book of metaphysical mathematics, one of the most undeniably proven equations is this: Christmas + Play-Doh = Purity. I'm not advising you to give your kid Play-Doh instead of a Zhu Zhu Pet. Just give them some Play-Doh with the stupid thing.

The box makes a big to-do about the inclusion of silver Play-Doh, as if its some rare artifact swiped from the soil of Jupiter's third moon. Actually, they've had silver Play-Doh for years -- I covered it back in 2006. I like it, but the glittery appearance makes me hesitant to eat it. I don't see a point in Play-Doh if I can't give into that private joy.

Welcome to Christmasland, everyone. Thanks for being here. \m/

Survey: Time to dust off one of our old favorites. In the comments, tell the world: What do you want for Christmas this year? No bullshit answers, please. Be materialistic and merry.

Andy: “A Boy and His Blob” is a disc-based retail game; not WiiWare. Wii Points will do you no good, unless, of course, you’re talking about the original “A Boy and His Blob” for NES.

Those of you who are after New Super Mario Bros. Wii and Wii Sports Resort – excellent choices. Two of the finest games I have played in years.

On a different subject, I can’t believe how excited I get about hearing Waiterbot’s catchphrase after a year without him. Not even hearing. I read a catchphrase. I knew it was coming. Three little words in white Sans Serif, and I’m all giddy.

Finally, let’s get to the presents. My list is simple. I want Wii games. I want CDs. I also asked my little sister to sew a bean bag chair for me, all I’m really after would be Wii games and CDs (and a plane ticket so I can see my family, but I’m getting into dangerously sappy territory if I go down that path).

In exchange, my family will be receiving those electronic bubble wrap keychains (purchased on sale for a dollar each at Toys ‘R’ US) and pairs of Deca Sports 2 promotional finger-less gloves (I don’t even know. There was a pile at Best Buy, and they cost a penny per pair).

Please don’t spoil the surprise.

Ah, the X-entertainment Advent Calendar… The one thing guaranteed to pull me back to this site. Merry X-Entertainmas everybody. Let the crackpot theorizing begin.

Pipe-dream materialistic answers:
• The pricey and perpetually out-of-stock Tokina 11-16mm f/2.8 lens I’ve been lusting after since before the bastard was even released.
• A Speedlite 580EXII flash
• A Zoom H4n field recorder

Realistic materialistic answers:
• A cheap remote shutter release.
• A 72mm polarizing filter to replace the one that I managed to carelessly lose out in the woods on some hike.
• Some crusty old mil-surplus odds ‘n’ ends, preferably Soviet or Eastern Bloc stuff.

Non-materialistic answers:
• SNOW. Preferably on X-mas and during the all-important wandering around the tree farm.
• For this season not to seem like it only lasted a couple of days the way last year did.
• To make absurd amounts of holiday food.

Woot! It’s Advent Calendar time!

Did they not release a new playmobil calendar this year, or have the evil-doers got their evil hands on it for evil purpose?

Anyone got a link to the 2008 one so I can refresh my memory. My old links don’t seem to be working.

Well,

Being a dad of 2 kids, 5 and 3 respectively, a lot of my “Christmas Toy Excitement” is lived through my kids. My boy LOVES traffic signals. He’s at that age, you know? So I saw a REAL traffic light for sale in a bookstore in Ocean City, MD back in September. The price was right, and I was able to buy cheap traffic signal circuitry on E-Bay (people make this stuff!). So that is hidden away; he will go berserk! Although my girl turns 3 next week, she is getting here own digital camera. A nice one for around $30. She is always STEALING MINE! And she actually knows how to take pics.

For me, it’s a small thing I have always wanted. The type of thing that is expensive enough not to buy for yourself, but nice enough to get as a present. Now when I say what this is, please set aside any feelings you have regarding this group and accept this in the Christmas Spirit. I sent my wife a reminder from the new York Yankees website. I want a limited edition Yankees hat, with the “Inaugural Season” patch as well as the “World Series” patch. I have an extremely large head, and that size is still available. For years I wanted a real Yankees hat, and this year, with them winning the series, I think this is the year to ask for one.

What I Want For Christmas, by Ralph Parker Cheetara:

- That sweetass Mystery Science Theater 3000 limited edition DVD with the tiny Tom Servo
- More nice long-sleeved shirts for work
- Serrated edge grapefruit spoons
- The Zombie Survival Guide
- Venture Industries Laptop Sleeve
- More records, preferably in the glam rock genre (I need to own some T. Rex NOW)

Chestnuts roasted by Cheetara @ 12/01/2009 9:23 AM

It’s baaaack. One of the highlights of my internet year (is there such thing as an internet year?!) is the X-E advent calendar. It sucks about no Playmobil this year, but in compensation, I already think that Roboclown may become one of my favourite characters. Don’t ask me why, I just DO.

What do I want for Christmas? Tough one, as most DVDs and CDs I buy for myself – there’s only my parents left who buy me presents, and even if they DID know which titles I wanted, they’d go for something more “educational”; it’s a hold-over from when I was a kid and asked for a Scalectrix and got a pile of encyclopedias instead. No I am not joking.

I wouldn’t mind a decent digital camera, and think Santa may already have one in the sack for me. Other than that, I’m pretty happy with whatever “didn’t ask for it but nice surprise” gifts that I score this year.
Oh, and I’d also like the end of war and starvation and peace & goodwill to all men, natually! =)

-Bleach 20th Anniversary
-Flashforward (the novel)
-Foo Fighters Greatest Hits

Loved the calendar entry, I’m really looking forward to how this will turn out.

I want lots of random stuff this year:

- Pokemon Mystery Dungeon 2 for the DS
- Pokemon Ranger 2 (DS again)
- Club Dread on DVD, in case I need to ease any winter blues in January
- Lots of books, stuff on marine animals and pop culture.
I also really need a new keyboard, this one is stained and creaky …

Has anybody decorated for Christmas yet? I put up all the decorations in my room already. Lots of tinsel garlands and a tiny artificial tree. With all the candy I put on it, I’m surprised it hasn’t collapsed yet.

Cheetara, think I’m just gonna copy and paste your Christmas list for my loved ones, is that cool?

I’m so psyched about the advent! I’ve set aside my lunch break to go fetch some apple cider, put on some Christmas music and savor it without interruption.

In other xmas related random comments, I went to see 3D Christmas Carol last night. It looked… weird. I think something was up with the projector, cause everyone else here who saw it said it looked great, right? Some parts were good, but anytime a scene was really dark it just looked a mess. Think I’ll stick with Scrooged and the Muppets from now on.

Funny you should ask, that Christmas Vacation Bluray set is at the top of my list. I also want the F13 and Nightmare on Elm St. box sets and some new clothes.

Anyone read the Christmas wish list over at aintitcoolnews.com? It’s pretty good.

Matt, my excitement knows no ends with the seasonal rebirth of the Advent Calendar… Advent-urers, mount up!

I don’t expect much in the gift department this year, as those who generally buy gifts are pretty tight for cash this year. Regardless, I’d love to get:

120GB hard drive for the Xbox 360
Two And A Half Men – season 6 DVD set
Lego Rock Band (so I can export the songs into the main game)
Microsoft points card
Any of the following movies: GI Joe, Star Trek or Transformers: ROTF
HMV gift card (to be used on Boxing Day)
Any Toronto Maple Leafs merch

But I’m pretty certain I won’t get any of those things and I’m cool with that. I’m personally just looking forward to going to my mom’s for her great turkey dinner. That’ll make my Christmas. :)

There is not longer a page for the 2008 Advent Calendar, might have to make one myself. However if it must be read, I recommend starting with December 1, and then just changing the date at the end of the URL for each corresponding day.

Also a couple of us are using the old box 23 thread for discussion of all things advent. Why not put it to use since there won’t be much box 23 this year?
