Invader Norbert, I love Venture Brothers, but I haven’t seen any of the new season.

Annette, I’m not as into video games as I used to be either. We got a Wii a few months ago, and aside from Mario Kart Wii and downloading classic NES games on the virtual console, I really dislike the thing. Wiimote, my ass. Give me games that can be played with a controller, dammit! We also got a PS3 a little while back, and I like it much better, but I just can’t find the time to play as much as I used to.

Everybody- All this game chatter has me wondering- There was an early computer game, probably came out in 1995 or so. I remember that there was a level where your character, a little explorer type guy, had to get out of these caves. It was almost a platform type game, but with better graphics.

I don’t own any new consoles, but I have a lot of them. Check these out:

I got ALOT of videogames… I don’t need to leave the house… which is good because my small town doesn’t have much to do anyway.

Holy shit! You must really like to play games and not do anything else!

Neg: Glad to know I’m not the only solitary gamer around here. I’ve only tried online play once at my cousin’s house (even though I could easily do it at home), and got my ass handed to me every time, so that kind of turned me off to it. I think it would be fun to do with people I know, but not to go into a room full of 13 year olds and only last 30 seconds, which is what seemed to happen. But, like you said, gaming as a whole is a very solitary experience to me, especially since I play mostly first person shooters. I just like it to be me and a controller against the world.

As for the PS3/360 debate, I know it may seem like a silly reason, but so much of the reason why I initally got a PS2 over an X-Box back in the day was just for the controller. I really don’t like the way the X-Box’s controller has that one analog stick up in the corner. I’ve always liked the PS3 one a lot better, plus I’ve got this badass PS3 controller that’s bigger and has the L2 and R2 buttons way at the bottom so the hands wrap around it better, more like natural triggers. Works really well for FPS’s. That carried over when I was deciding between a PS3 or a 360. Well, that and the choice of games and the Blu-Ray player. For my money the PS3 is a MUCH better value and a better system all around, although I do agree that they completely dropped the ball when it came to marketing it.

I’ve never been good at playing games against other people. Either the other person is way better at the game than I am, or I’m way better at it than they are, the latter of which makes me feel absolutely terrible. Like, this weekend I was playing Mario Kart Double Dash with a friend of mine and I just kept blowing right past her, and it made me feel really guilty.

Now playing co-op with another person– that can be pretty freaking fun. More games need co-op modes rather than versus.

Drew Do, actually, I am quite active. I play in community music groups, and lead a church choir, but you are right, on the weekends, it’s pretty much all games for me. I don’t do the bar scene anymore.

Chestnuts roasted by Jimmy @ 11/16/2009 4:41 PM

I very rarely play video games. I just plain lost interest when the Gamecube came out. Plus, it seems to me that controllers keep getting bigger/bulkier with every new system. I still have a my Gameboy Color, even though my brothers own the DS. I have no interest in upgrading.

I love how flexible Matt’s definition of “end of the week” is.

Chestnuts roasted by DJ D @ 11/16/2009 7:11 PM

To be fair, he said “end of THE weekend”, not “end of THIS weekend.” So it can be any weekend he chooses! :)

Matt’s got stuff going on, I’m sure when he returns again it’ll be just as much fun as we were all having in October!

Chestnuts roasted by Andy @ 11/16/2009 7:38 PM

We used to have fun all year round…..

Chestnuts roasted by Chris @ 11/16/2009 8:38 PM

Chris- I showed up October 2008, and though this has been a drought year, it has still been a helluva lotta fun.

Chestnuts roasted by PlantMonster @ 11/16/2009 8:59 PM

Agreed, PlantMonster. I knew at some point the constant updates would end because even for Matt that is a hell of a lot of time to dedicate outside of work. I just appreciate the updates that do happen and don’t sweat it when they don’t.

Andy: Good point. I think we’ve all learned to accept the fact that when Matt makes proclamations of writing, the small print to keep in mind is that if life gets in the way of the preceding proclamation, said proclamation is null and void.

It’s cool. I’ve made my peace with it.

Chestnuts roasted by DJ D @ 11/16/2009 9:41 PM

Really, there are years and years and years of article after article and blog post after blog post (not to mention 80s commercials and countdowns) if you get really bored. I spent an hour or so the other day reading through the old Thanksgiving parade reviews. And if you’ve read all of that and STILL aren’t having fun, I’d invest in a video game system, television, DVD player, even other people to have fun with until Matt gets to a position where he can post another blog entry.

Chestnuts roasted by Andy @ 11/16/2009 9:51 PM

It’s not like Matt’s been silent for two weeks. He’s been posting in the thread. Just chill out, guys! :) Eat a Christmas tree cake or something.

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 11/16/2009 9:55 PM

I can’t believe this is once again going to descend into a flame/defense thread. Please everyone just don’t respond to the trolls who come out, it isn’t worth it and really makes this place unbearable for everyone.

Chestnuts roasted by drew do @ 11/16/2009 9:57 PM

I hope I haven’t sounded more negative than I intended. I ABSOLUTELY agree with Andy. I don’t want this to devolve into a flame/defense thing either, but for the record, I’m firmly of the opinion that Matt can get round to writing if and when he feels like it, and I’m just fine with whatever he does. Like Andy said, if you’ve actually read every single article, blog entry, and comment, and still feel like you’re bored, you seriously need to get out of the house. I’ve only been a regular around here for about 3 years or so, so there’s a LOT of old articles I’ve yet to read, including some of the more (in)famous ones. I’m just digging the company and atmosphere. Let’s keep it light and change the subject.

Yes, the Goth/Darkwave/Horrpunk DJ is telling everyone to keep it light.

Chestnuts roasted by DJ D @ 11/16/2009 10:25 PM

Yes, DJ, but the irony being that by proclaiming that you don’t mind that Matt has absences, you ARE feeding into the situation Drew spoke of . . .

so, a different topic is in order.

When you were a kid, what was THE Christmas gift that you absolutely had to have?

Chestnuts roasted by wroclawski @ 11/16/2009 10:31 PM

Christmas! Woo!

Video games were my must have several years. The Super Nintendo/Mario World combo blew my world away. A few years ago, it was the Wii/Zelda as a combo birthday/Christmas present (damn December birthday!).

Other must haves over the years were definitely the Turtle figures and various playsets, and I’m pretty sure the official WWF Hasbro wrestling ring was a must-have one year.

Chestnuts roasted by Andy @ 11/16/2009 10:59 PM

Cameron T.- I’ll see your Christmas tree cake, and raise you one seasonal Pomegranate Cream Soda.

Chestnuts roasted by PlantMonster @ 11/16/2009 11:53 PM

The best gift I can remember getting was a She-Ra Crystal Castle playset. I was about 6.

Chestnuts roasted by ericnrosesmom @ 11/16/2009 11:53 PM

wroclawski- Legos, Legos, Legos. I loved Legos. Still love em.

Chestnuts roasted by PlantMonster @ 11/16/2009 11:55 PM

Power Rangers Command Center playset when I was 6. That was my “Red Rider BB Gun”. My parents ended up getting it for me and it was amazing.

Unfortunatly when I was 8 I had a nasty habbit of taking apart toys I was bored with to try and build new ones (which never ended up working well) and this playset became a casualty of that habbit.

Chestnuts roasted by Chris @ 11/16/2009 11:57 PM

Funnily enough, even though I was just talking about it earlier, I’d have to go with Super Mario Brothers 3. I was looking in a drawer for a pencil about a week or so before Christmas and stumbled on it totally by accident. I ran down the stairs screaming, “Thankyouthankyouthankyou!” to my mom. She was so mad that I had found it and I don’t think I ever managed to convince her that I wasn’t on some treasure hunt to find some of my presents stashed around the apartment.

But, like I said earlier, to this day, I’ve never even come close to beating it. I’m sure some of you will disagree with me, but I still think it’s one of the hardest games ever made.
