10/31/2009: HALLOWEEN IS HAPPENING RIGHT NOW.

It’s Halloween! I challenge you to make the most of it! Go trick-or-treating! Go trunk-or-treating! Bob for apples! Watch the Elm Street series in its entirety! Sacrifice owls!

The weather here is perfect: Gloomy, grey and inoffensively chilly. I haven’t checked the forecast, but judging by the wind and clouds, it wouldn’t surprise me to be completely underwater by 9 PM. My kingdom for a thunder clap.

Tonight, we’re heading to a friend’s house to drink and eat our way through a pile of scary DVDs that would stack taller than Andre, all while carving pumpkins with designs that are certain to be obscene. It’s the last hurrah for horror, and it’s hard to imagine that by this time tomorrow, I’ll be waist deep in red-and-green Sunday circulars, fifty times more excited that I am now. There are four quarters in the year, and people, we’re living in the only one that matters.

We’ve got a few hours to kill, because our little party is sure to last until tomorrow afternoon, and if we show up too early, we’ll be unconscious by midnight. I’ve been waiting for trick-or-treaters, but none have arrived. Not a single one. I’m aghast that we’ve scared society into ditching one of its greatest traditions, but on the other hand…more Twizzlers for me.

Normally, we just combine assorted candies into Ziploc bags to give to trick-or-treaters, but Target was selling these awesome boxes of full-sized Twizzlers varieties for ten bucks. Couldn’t resist. I’m so anxious to hear a knock on our door, because giving retail-sized candies to trick-or-treaters is sure to make me the hero of the neighborhood. Alas, nobody has come. Maybe it was a bad idea to decorate the front lawn in a dead ferret motif.

In the comments, discuss your Halloween adventures! Don’t know what kind of computer access I’m going to have by tonight, but if there’s any, I’ll pop by with drunken tales of poker games won and face paint tubes exploded.

Oh, and as promised, below are the final entries in the Spooky Die-O-Rama contest! I’m sure I missed a few, since I never get through one of these art contests without pissing off several people. Thanks again to everyone who entered — these entries were truly the soul of this year’s Countdown!

“Attack of the Corn”

Stephanie is just one of the many entrants who was robbed of a spot in the winner’s circle, but at least she’s done her part to make the last batch of Die-O-Ramas feel mighty and proud.

There’s a lot to love with this one — from the wholly custom scarecrow with the paper facial features, to the evil corn dudes who seem to have been crafted out of those amazing corn-themed corn on the cob holders. Any justification for using the word “corn” that many times in a single sentence equals brilliance. Steph, you’re my favorite Steph out of all the Stephs I’ve ever known.



“Count Dogula”

Oooh! This one is pure glee. It’s hard to find dioramas featuring vampires in blood-soaked chambers that manage to seem so harmless and cheerful, but I suppose that’s the benefit of making a vampire out of a hot dog. Tommy even provided a photo of Count Dogula burnt to a crisp, and though he didn’t provide an explanation, I’m guessing that it represents a vampire who was exposed to sunlight.

Also, is this really the only Die-O-Rama that made use of those five-point casino arcade spider rings? To everyone besides Tommy: For shame.

Nick’s diorama is pretty wonderful, mixing LEGO figurines and fallen branches to recreate a scene from Resident Evil. I just wish he included some larger photos, because who wouldn’t love a closer look at Cujo mangling Man Eating Chicken in the lower left?

Nakairra went through a lot of trouble to send me this entry. The pictures kept bouncing and the links kept dying, and by the time I actually got to see it, Christmas had already come and gone. Really dig the haunted mansion in the background, and the pipe cleaner trees are just the thing October 31st needed to double its birthright specialness.



“A (Star)Scream of a Good Time”

Alienux provided no description of his diorama, save for its title. I’ll have to piece this one together myself. Seems as if Starscream is spending his Halloween torturing a skeleton, while a living-but-sadly-stationary Demon Apple voices his displeasure in the background. I don’t know why the Demon Apple is wearing an enormous severed finger, but then, Halloween is all about mystery.

PS, I can’t tell if that’s the original Starscream figure or one of the many re-issues. I’m guessing “re-issue,” because there is not a single original Starscream figure left in the universe that still has its forearm missiles.

Perhaps it’s best that Orbital handles the explanation. “Our little protagonist just wants Mr. McEvil to give her some of his shitty candy, but he’s gone to great lengths to make sure that doesn’t happen. He’s blocked off the path to his haunted mansion with a spooky toothpick fence and a giant man-eating spider! Oh nooo…”

Does the crayon castle in the background remind anyone else of Bowser’s fortress from Super Mario World? I’ve gonna have that ominous techno beat playing in my head until Thanksgiving now. Thanks, OrbitalVelocity.



“Sneakerama”

HEY, that’s not a diorama. Kristin knew that skirting the rules was grounds for disqualification, and said as much in her e-mail. But look closer, and you’ll likely forgive her. Here, the shoebox diorama is less a diorama and more of an actual shoebox, playing home to a pair of sneakers with iconic horror-related images painted on the sides. I’d totally wear these, but truth be told, I have hooves.

D’oh! Just barely missed it. Damn you Jotenks to hell for all enternity.

Anyway, the falls leaves are blowing all over my porch right now, adding garnish to my pumpkin that’s also flanked by fake rats and spiders. The graveyard is in full effect in the front yard, and now I just gotta hang out here and wait for the few trick-or-treaters to show up. Halloween 6 is playing on FX right now, and I don’t care what anyone says, I’ll stick up for that one any day of the week.

I just wish it wasn’t 75 degrees outside.

I’m spending the day with my sister today, we’re overdosing on candy and watching slasher flicks on TV. Yesterday I had a Halloween party, which was a lot of fun.

Sadly, one of the neighbors downstairs locked the front door and made it impossible for Trick-or-Treaters to reach our door. I ran down the four sets of stairs to unlock the door, but that woman locked the door again. Argh.

Happy Halloween guys! I am going to go eat Chinese food and then watch Garfield and Charlie Brown with my husband. And that’s pretty much it this year. I didn’t get my Netflix movies in the mail in time so I won’t get them until Monday– major fail on my part. But apparently they’re all out of copies of Army of Darkness anyway, which is the one I really wanted to see. Oh well.

I managed to watch Night of the Living Dead (1990) and Dawn of the Dead (remake) with a 3 year old and several in-laws in the premises. So I’m already considering this a better Halloween than last year’s. The plan is to go through Land of the Dead and Diary of the Dead before the end of the night, hopefully finding time for Trick r’ Treat as well, which I’ve heard nothing but praise about.

So, for scary movies this week, I managed to watch Drag Me to Hell, which was great, and My Name is Bruce, which is a move about Bruce Campbell being mistaken for his on screen self and being asked to rid a little down of a demon. I was really looking forward to it, but truth be told, it was pretty disappointing.

I went to to a shitty football game (we lost) this morning. Been making devilled eggs for a non-halloween party tomorrow. Now H20 is on FX and I’m watching that, and I plan to watch Young Frankenstein and Rocky Horror Picture Show later as I always do. Kind of a lonely night for me but oh well. Happy Halloween everyone. Not much is going on here. Waiting for the trick or treaters. My nephews came by, and they caused quite a ruckus. You could say that trolls invaded my house. Ha ha.

I got nothing for a topic, so lets just keep updating the events of the night as it goes on. I just saw Bigfoot on the History Channel, and now they’e doing UFOs. I don’t know what happened last night, but we only had 52 trick-or-treaters, when we usually have at least 100. Granted, it was a little rainy/windy/chilly, but we’ve had far worst weather than that for Begger’s Night before with no problem.

Also, I seem to be having problems finding pumpkin products this year for Halloween. Last year you couldn’t walk anywhere without finding stuff like pumpkin cookies, bars,fudge, etc. This year, not so much. Just today I finally found Pumpkin Ice Cream along with some Pumpkin Bread mix. Has Thanksgiving all of a sudden become the go to holiday for pumpkin foods?

Although I am having the Healthy Choice Pumpkin Ravioli for dinner tonite, which isn’t bad.

Will I lose my X-E license if I admit to buying some eggnog todaY? At least I didn’t buy the Hot Cocoa Ice Cream yet.

As for tonite, I’ll probably just watch whatever horror movie catches my interest.

Happy Halloween, everybody. The wife and I are going to a party in Wiliamsburg. As Matt said, rain is definitely on the way here in NYC so that is gonna suck. Especially since this party has a yard and much of my costume relies on makeup. (I’m going as a Star Trek Red shirt victim of a warp core breach). But it’s a reason to get out of the house, unlike last year and the year before where I watched the live Ghost Hunters specials.

WOOOT!!! Just got back from takin my bab sister Trick or Treatin! Had an AWESOME time! One of my local churches had trunk or treat. I don’t know what yours was like(if you had one) but the one I went to was really fun and nice. They gave all the little kiddies A TON of goodies and let them play games . After that, I took her to do the traditional door to door thing. All in all, a fun night. Now that that’s over, I’m gonna blast the X-E jukebox and have a scary flick marathon. Once again Happy Halloween ya’ll. :)

Stephanie I love the zombie corn!!! We didn’t get near our usual number of trick or treaters either. Most years we get mobbed. Maybe it was too cold (low 50’s to start then got colder in a hurry). I saw one kid who had one of the most original costumes I’ve ever seen-spaghetti and meatballs! He had a colander on his head and a mop covered with brown pompoms for hair, with a red outfit and more pompoms. Adorable!

How did you know I was stuck at home with nothing to do?? I did dress up for work today, but it was kind of disappointing since no one else dressed up and we had hardly any customers. I have long-ish red hair and nerd glasses, so I decided to dress up as Pamela Isley, pre-Poison Ivy (since a Poison Ivy costume would be inappropriate for work). I wore a white lab coat and leaf-themed jewelry. Then I printed out a screenshot I found online of Ivy’s ID from the Animated Series and stuck it in a plastic ID holder. I also had a clipboard with a diagram of some carnivorous plants, and a fake rose to carry around. I don’t think a lot of people got it, but it was fun for me.

I had absolutely nothing to dress up for. All of my nearby friends are married/have kids/too busy/work weird hours, etc etc to have a party. Kinda sucks. Oh well.

I just made myself a veggie pizza, and brownies earlier, and am watching Ghost Hunters. I’m kinda pissed cause they fucked up the live investigation this year. :( Why couldn’t they leave it alone? Unless they do plan on doing live stuff at midnight… I guess I could forgive them then.
