10/30/2009: The “Ghost Finders” Haunted Camera!

HALLOWEEN IS HERE! Well, almost. Technically, it’s just Mischief Night and an excuse to drink skunked Heineken while Tales From The Darkside spins softly in my DVD player. But we’re so close to Halloween, you can taste it.

Actually, by the time most of you read this, it will be Halloween. And for a fair portion of you, it’ll actually be after Halloween. It’s almost…too much to make sense of. Perhaps God should not have created the pumpkin to be so easily converted into an organic bong.

So ends another X-Entertainment Halloween Countdown. Can’t say that it’s been one for the books, but at least it hasn’t been one for the list. I hope you’ve gleamed some small semblance of morbid merriment from the site over the past two months, but even if you didn’t, I scored a life-sized audio-animatronic Jason Voorhees out of the deal, not to mention lots of sweet chewy candy.

This actually isn’t the last post of the Halloween Countdown — there will be one more. A final party post, including the remaining Die-O-Ramas and, if the rumors are true, dancing skeleton GIFs. I’d give you that stuff now, but since those first few paragraphs up there will only make sense if I publish this bitch by midnight, I’m kind of in a rush.

And yay, I actually have something decent to cover! I found this “Ghost Finders” disposable camera weeks ago at Party City, and it was as if some giant-sized, benevolent-version of the Grim Reaper parted the skies, pointed his scythe at me and said, “today…is the day I give to YOU.”

A camera that automatically adds ghosts to the pictures you take! Inconceivable! I haven’t been this satisfied with a ten dollar purchase since Best Buy took 50% off Dragon Wars.

As the box promises, each of the photos taken with the disposable camera will feature a ghastly image of a spirit, or, in some cases, a disembodied skull. Sure, it’s just a Halloween spin on an existing gimmick, but holy shit, it’s clever. Is there anyone on this planet who wouldn’t want to take pictures of their sneakers and see floating blue lady heads over them after the film develops? Only the blind could balk!

I snapped those photos like my life depended on it. Any previous photograph-related speed-taking records were soundly eradicated. I can’t say that I was taking the pictures with any sense of artistry, but then, that sort of effort is best saved for film that doesn’t belong to a disposable camera that throws skulls over the pictures.

After snapping and winding and snapping and winding and then doing the biiiiiig wind at the end, I was ready to get my film developed and revel in the glories of wacky photography. Unfortunately, there were two problems:

1) Getting normal film developed isn’t as easy as it used to be. The normal stores are mainly expecting digital deliveries. Though virtually any photo-related kiosk is able to act as the liaison between you and another place that actually develops film, I was adamant about getting my pictures back in one hour. After all, I stood to receive pictures of my cats with floating ghost heads covering their midsections. Can you blame my impatience?

2) Even when I was finally able to find a store that could develop film in-house and adhere to the commonly accepted standards of “one hour photo,” I had to come to terms with handing a “Ghost Finders” camera over to someone in public. It’s not that I was ashamed, but do I always have to be that guy? You’ve seen the stuff I buy for your entertainment. Just once, I’d like to exit a store without causing someone there to wonder if I mutilate children in my basement.

But, for wacky photographs, no problem is insurmountable!

I got real, actual, in-hand photographs, but I also had them create a CD with digital pictures, as I was worried that I wouldn’t meet CVS’s unspoken $10 Minimum Purchase clause otherwise. Sad to say…I know they’re inherently doctored photos…but they’re a lot more doctored on the box. :(

I saw ghosts, yes, but not on all of the pictures. Any photos taken outside or in very bright light lacked ghouls. And, on the pictures that actually did bear some supernatural artifact, the ghosts were often too faint or small to notice without the aid of a monacle. The bright side is, you finally have an excuse to buy a monocle.

But the pictures weren’t all bad. Above are my favorite three, or maybe just a random three. Because the makers of “Ghost Finders” cameras were aiming for bonus points from me, there are actually a lot of different spirits in the pictures. Old bald men, skulls, shrieking women, children — there’s even a cloaked demon in the mix!

The final picture shown above is probably the creepiest in the batch. It’s just a picture of our front windows, if you couldn’t tell. There’s this gnarly old couple shown in the middle, with blacked out eyes and latex-level wrinkles. And they’re smiling. If I developed this film without prior knowledge that the photos were taken on a ghost camera, that picture would’ve caused my head to explode into hilarious confetti.

Not a bad find for ten bucks, and a nice piece of business for us to end this year’s Countdown on. Only, this isn’t ending the Countdown, because I’m posting again tomorrow. I think I already said that. Let’s assume it warranted repeating.

Happy (almost) Hallo!

Great post. I can’t believe it’s Halloween! Seriously, I need to go Christmas shopping soon. Fuck a duck! Ok, can’t think about that now. :|

I think the Jason buy was the highlight of this year. Couldn’t help but laugh in my office and let everyone know I was out of my Outlook. Amazing Halloween Countdown 2009. One for the books.

Actually looking closer at this, the laughing Grandparents make me uneasy. That seems a little low-brow. Then again, I guess that’s the next step from The Villages.

We had “Trunk or Treat” at my son’s school this evening- awesome!

Matt, the countdown this season has been outstanding, I hope you can keep it up through Christmas.

I’ve seen those cameras before…I thought they were a little silly, but that’s exactly what their for : )

Anyway, here is the contents of our Halloween treat bags:
http://img98.imageshack.us/img98/3197/sdc13625.jpg

..the candy mix is a little weak this year I think, hardly any fruity stuff…no Jolly Ranchers, no Blowpops,no flavoured Tootsie rolls(cherry and vanilla are the best) still…I think few kids would have any reason to be unhappy with a free Frosty : )

Also let me share my wife’s cute pumpkin patch:

Pumpkin cake, cream cheese frosting, coconut grass and gummy snails…and Snoopy of course!

Haven’t commented in a while, been working like a Blexican, but I had to comment on an almost Halloween night.

That pic with the old people heads is kind of scary and eerie.

What a great countdown this year was!

Happy Halloween X-E and everybody affiliated! Party hard! =)

A fun thing to do would be to remove the camera from its paper shell and put it into a normal disposable camera paper shell. Then give it to someone without telling them. When they have the photos developed there will be ghost on their photos freaking them out.

Ghosted by Stephen @ 10/30/2009 11:01 PM EST

Aw, X-E Matt, I love you for this one. Thanks for always taking it on the chin and being the public buffoon so that we can see pictures of your front windows festooned with HORRIBLE SHRIEKING GEEZERS FROM BEYOND THE GRAVE. You’re the tits, man. Happy Halloween to you.

Halloween Eve is almost becoming a holiday in itself. Need to collect all my “fun savers,” and get them developed before no one is doing it anymore.

I love how the woman is shrieking and Jason is just like, “Yes, I am Jason. Yes, I know I’m awesome.”

If you want to see something hilarious check out the host for Ghost Adventures Live. The only thing paranormal is witnessing the ghost of his career pass. Very uncomfortable.

What’s the word K Neg?

Yeah, the one with the heads of the elderly people is pretty freaky. The skeleton against almost total darkness gets big points for eerieness, too.

For the first time in years, I’m really looking forward to Halloween. I work early tomorrow, from 10 to 2, and my town is running trick or treat for most of the afternoon and evening. This is the first time in at least six or seven years I’ve been off early enough to give out candy.

(Or at least, help my dad and uncle give out candy. My apartment is in the back of a house on a dead-end street and set too far back to really be seen by trick-or-treaters.)

I just wanted to thank you, Matt, for giving us a wonderful Halloween season. While you may not think that this year’s countdown was one for the books, I know that I enjoyed it immensely.

Have a great Halloween!

Ok, I haven’t read the blog entry yet, but I noticed earlier tonight that a pawn on the chessboard had been moved forward. I suppose it’s possible that it was moved forward last weekend when I had a bunch of people here for Homecoming and I just didn’t notice it until now.

But damn it creeped me out….

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 10/31/2009 12:46 AM EST

That camera is… actually pretty nifty. I would actually buy that.

Thanks again for a great countdown, Matt. I know you’re crazy busy and running to this site is the last thing on your mind sometimes (or last thing you want to do), but we appreciate it! Bring on Christmas! And a parade review! :)

Hey Matt,
I’m so glad you made Halloween so spooktastical for us goonie faced kids out there. Remember when you did that Die-o-rama contest? That was a good one.
I really like your black cats, they scream halloween!
Well I’ve got to go find a virgin, you wouldn’t happen to be one would you? It’d save me a lot of awkward conversations. Anyways, before I go I award you with this: The Spirit of Halloween award! You deserve it! Look for it under your pillow tonight.
Happy Halloween!

I think there was trunk or treat here tonight in my town as well. Unfortunately I could not participate due to a flat tire.

No offense to anyone, I mean I am all for giving kids candy and stuff, but why this new trunk or treat trend? Has the world become some dangerous that we now how to micro manage childrens halloween festivities???

It used to be this free for all of running house to house, streets flooded with kids and laughter and smells of hershey bars and crisp fall leaves in the air.

WOOOOOOT! HAPPY HALLOWEEN YA’LL !!!!!!!!!!!!! :D
Hope each and every last one of you has a goodun . Everything’s ready for the big day tomorrow . Overall this countdowns been good. Maybe not one for the books, but still fun and noteworthy. And yeah, I’d have to agree, that Jason is the masterpiece of this years CD. Nice camera btw. There’s A LOT of things you could buy for ten bucks that are MUCH worse! Believe me! lol!

“Has the world become some dangerous that we now how to micro manage childrens halloween festivities?”mandy_Reeves
It’s not so much that the world has really become that much more dangerous, it’s that the world has become increasingly paranoid. Actually, I probably shouldn’t even say “the world”, as I’ve only got experience with US culture, maybe it’s not quite as ridiculous elsewhere yet. Either way, some of the threats that clueless fear-mongers love to trot out at this time of year are either grossly exaggerated or outright false. If you live in a really rough neighborhood, I can understand how this sort of “trunk or treat” stuff could be a good idea, but when utterly safe little towns like mine start depriving kids of a REAL Halloween experience because of imaginary threats, it makes me sad.

That said, there’s a really horrible part of me that’s always wanted to go to the store on Halloween day and buy nothing but a bag of candy and a box of razorblades just so I could see the look on the clerks face.

Ghosted by Anonymous @ 10/31/2009 2:31 AM EST

Ah, bugger. That was me rambling above. Forgot I cleared my cache. *facepalm*

Ghosted by Jugendsehnsucht @ 10/31/2009 2:33 AM EST

As much as I love Halloween, there’s ABSOLUTELY NO WAY, I’m trusting total strangers. I’m gonna make sure my baby sisters candy is ok before I let her eat it. Call me “paranoid” if you want, but it’s just how I am.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 10/31/2009 2:53 AM EST

Holy geez– it’s Halloween! I had one of these cameras two years ago and came up with some really great shots. The creepiest one was of a little ghost boy standing right between my son and daughter like he was actually there. My boy was still freaked out by it for months after Halloween… come to think of it, he’ll probably mention that photograph at his first parole board hearing…

Ghosted by Eric M @ 10/31/2009 2:56 AM EST

The Halloween spirit was really high this year on X-E, thank you so much Matt! Loved each an every article!

Ghosted by ~Rae~ @ 10/31/2009 3:04 AM EST

Shouldn’t the ghosts be wearing manacles and I be wearing a monocle to see them?

The last photo’s the best, where the ghost appears to be leering at your cat’s ass. Good thing these are fake, in case entity rape isn’t exclusive to human victims.

And speaking of monocles, you can hear the wonderfully weird “The Spider and the Fly” by Monocles in the Halloween-themed episode of my podcast, The Offaldrome. An on-topic shill! I’ll give out a handful of pennies to anyone who listens.

Ghosted by Throat @ 10/31/2009 5:16 AM EST

@Ryane thanks, I don’t think my wife was completely happy with how the mini pumpkin cakes turned out, but as I pointed out this was her first year doing it, so I think next year she’ll do even better next year:) (speaking of next year…how about the X-E Halloween bake-off..just a thought;) )

As far as Trunk or treat events go I don’t think it’s that bad, I mean frankly my first trick or treating memories involve going to the mall..so I think trunk or treating as a community event is actually somewhat of an improvement in that regard. Don’t get me wrong, their fond memories, the haul was always decent and varied at the mall and you got to see plenty of cool costumes.

I didn’t do door to door trick or treating until I was old enough to take my little sister out semi-unattended, by which time I was in Minnesota TrT in a town of about ohh..Five hundred or so people which as you might imagine was an experience unto itself. Nowadays I take my little one to the neighborhood right down the street, this will be our second year, last year was decent, though the house’s participating were kind of spread out, the haul was still very nice I thought(if a little heavy on Tootsie rolls)

A ‘Ghost Finder’ camera is the sort of thing that would have fascinated me as a kid.

Then again, looking through confectionary wrappers so that everything looked weird colours fascinated me as a kid!

I used to work at a photo place, and they way these work is of course is that the pictures are already partly exposed with images. What most people don’t realize is that 35mm film isn’t “split up” into photos until they are taken; the film is one long spool of blank film with no boundaries. That is why you usually get an extra picture or two on each roll.

Secondly, that old couple by your window is a stock photo; we used to use that same photo on in-store advertising for medicare.

I guess if they are ghosts now they didn’t make it. :(

When I bought my 35 MM camera when I was 15, leae ti to my mom to look at the first picture and say, “Hey this looks like a ghost”. If you know my mom, at the time (1977) she was probably reading Reader’s Digest or Woman’s Day magazine, and was into the latest crap topic. Add to that, my one grandfather found a civil war era penny in our garden, and my other grandfather then told us our current house was built on the foundation of an older house from back then. So my first exposure to haunts and actually worrying about ghosts despite being 15 years old. In the years hence my mom got really religious, and doesn’t think there are ghosts or if they are they are true demons out to possess your soul (i.e. no simple odd photo shoots; in mom’s world they come full on and make you murder people)

Point being, I wish I had one of those cameras to freak out my mom!

And here we are! The day is here. This is hands down my favorite holiday of the year, or at least a close tie with Christmas, especially since it’s falling on a weekend and I get to enjoy having today and tomorrow off from work. And then Monday’s my birthday, so that’s just alright.

Until you guys started talking about it, I’d never heard of Trunk or Treat. What’s that all about? Is there not candy involved? Cause if so, that’s just…well, that’s just not right.

Throw me in with the camp of Matt-thankers. I really appreciate the entertainment for the last couple of months. I’m still kicking myself for not getting off my duff and contributing something to the Die-O-Rama thing, but what ya gonna do? Oh, and I know there’s another post coming up and I’m sure it’ll be cool, but I just have 4 words for all of you…

Ghost With The Most

Happy Halloween to the site with the most Halloween spirit, it’s Web Master, and members!

I’ve never heard of a trunk or treat either. When I was a kid, we would just go door to door, and my mom would check the candy.

I’m actually watching Saturday morning cartoons for the first time in who knows how long, and I totally forgot how great it was when they show themed episodes.

I remember Tiny Toons, Animaniacs, TMNT, all do some sort of themed episode. I miss those days.

Anywho, that Senior Couple is awesome. Matt needs to used their disembodied heads as next years X-E Halloween theme somewhere.

I second Ghost with the Most. This years countdown has been awesome just as in years past, and the Ghost would make an awesome closing post.

Did that just rhyme?

On to Thanksgiving and then, Christmas!!!!
