Haunted Snack Mansion! Color-Changing Cars! AND MORE!

Today I will regale you with tales of Doritos and color-changing cars. It's exactly how you wanted to spend the weekend.

I'm not sure if it's possible for me to love this any more than I do right now. Maybe if it blew me. Frito-Lay always spends October marketing its mini-sized snack bag as trick-or-treat fodder, but for 2009, the push is extraordinary. Doing away with the more basic stylings of yesteryear's multi-packs, Frito-Lay has crafted these unbelievable "Haunted Snack Mansions," made of shiny cardboard and stuffed with 18 bags of Doritos and Cheetos.

The Doritos and Cheetos are nothing special, or I should say, they're no more special than normal. The real star is the "mansion" itself. Big, spooky and with working doors, it has all the makings of the perfect action figure playset, and had Frito-Lay been making these back when I was age-appropriate, there's no way Hordak and Cobra Commander wouldn't have warred to claim it.

Beyond that, the box would work wonderfully as a "starter piece" for a Halloween crafts project. Paint over all of the product emblems and turn it into a true spookhouse! I think I just gave my Saturday a purpose. By the stroke of midnight, I'll have transformed Frito-Lay's Haunted Snack Mansion into a real Castle Dracula. Or maybe I'll just go to bed early.

I can't remember exactly how much Target charged for this, but "9.99" sounds like a good guess. Ten bucks for 18 mini-bags of chips is reasonable in a borderline sort of way, but the fact that it comes in a cardboard Bates Motel puts it over the top. Recommended!

Another score! From Hot Wheels, it's a two-pack of "Trickin' Treats" Color Changers, which are infinitely more awesome than the five-pack of boring regular Hot Wheels cars I reviewed last month.

The packaging includes a mad scientist with a fiery tie, who defies mad scientist society's stereotypical fixation on esoteric ingredients by proclaiming his secret formula to be nothing more than "icy water." No bat wings, no rat blood, no owl pellets -- just plain old cold water. That's not very "mad" of him. I suppose he's more of a regular scientist than a mad one. Don't judge a book by its cover, or fiery tie.

I always approach color-changing toys with some apprehension, as historically, the gimmick never seems to work well. This time, it did. The second I poured cold water over the cars, they changed colors. And not in that cheap, stripey way either -- we're talking about completely new paint jobs, with the yellow car turning green and the orange van turning...a deeper shade of orange. It's all so magical and wish-fulfilling.

Also nice is how you can use your fingertips to "swab" them back to their original colors. They're like the toy car versions of those old Hypercolor t-shirts.

HEY. Did you know that I've been doing these Halloween Countdowns since 2003, and writing about Halloween nonsense on the site for even longer than that? X-E's Halloween celebrations have been around for longer than some of your children, and in celebration, here's a random sampling of my older spooky articles. Pick your poison!

Enjoy! You can also view all of last year's Halloween Countdown starting with this blog entry. Just keep clicking the "next" links at the top of each entry to wade through nearly 40 days' worth of year-old creepy content.

Now, how about we take a look at a few more of your Spooky Die-O-Ramas? See five more entries, after the jump! I seriously wish I could've given prizes to everyone who entered, but I'd never be able to afford things like Cheetos castles and Hypercolor Hot Wheels if I did.

"Haunted McNugget Mansion"
Created By: Jason Lillard

Even though it didn't win, I'm not sure if any of the other entries were quite as joyous as Jason's. This Die-O-Rama is definitely a happy place, filled with all the things that make happy places happy, like Chicken McNuggets, lollipops and Food Fighters. I especially like the random Heineken bottle coaster. Jason's entry is the Halloween Mood Table of Spooky Shoebox Die-O-Ramas.

"Linus Summons The Great Pumpkin"
Created By: Lynn

Interestingly, the Peanuts gang appears to be in their more common Christmas wardrobe. I'm not sure if this was intentional or not. Perhaps Lynn was going for some point of symbolism that got lost on my simple brain?

Either way, I appreciate the Godzilla-scaled realization of the Great Pumpkin, and take the lack of Sally to mean that the Great Pumpkin ate her. I have no problem with this; she was such a bitch to Linus in that patch.

"Size 9 From Outer Space"
Created By: Ricky Henry

The more I look at this one, the more I think it deserved to be in the winners' circle. You got gypped, Ricky. Aside from being one of the few entries that really delved into classic horror, Ricky even came up with an awesome name for it. Plan 9 becomes Size 9! (Get it? Size 9? Shoebox? Yes.)

"Whoopi Goldberg and Conky Prepare to Explode Peggy Hill Out of the Asylum for Her Annual Halloween Rampage"
Created By: Cliff

Cliff came up with the title for this one, and fortunately for tired old me, it doubles as the description! I love how Conky appears to be egging Whoopi into this, but doesn't want to get his own hands dirty. He's like a robot Iago.

"Dracula Makes his Move at the Monster Keg Party"
Created By: Eric M.

What first seems to be just an everyday mashing of monsters actually has a story far deeper than that, and I'll let Eric tell it: "Basically, a blood-drunk Count is making a pass at Frankenstein's old lady, not knowing that the man himself is right behind him."

I dig the notion of infidelity-related melodrama surrounding the Universal Monsters crowd. I also dig the cute little table full of bright pink pastries. Look close and you'll notice that the monster figures are all wearing monster masks!

Thanks again for your entries, everyone! There are still plenty more to come!

Happy SNT.

Nice entries! Love the fact that Mumm-Ra crashed the McNuggets’ party.

Happy Saturday Night Terror!

A junk food mansion and color changing hotwheels? I LOVE X-E AND Halloween!!! Cool entries too.

Ok, I can pick a favorite from this group… I’m going with Lynn’s.

Linus interfered with forces that he did not fully comprehend. Now the world will suffer for his ignorance.

Reading this has put me in the mood to go spend more money I don’t have…Off to Target!

I did find the LAST package of Halloween Oreos at my grocery store today. Seriously, there was one lone package of the orange and black variety stuck amongst hundreds of the regular old boring kind. I felt special.

Happy SNT!

Did the Hot Wheels also change their shape? The van looks like it got flattened while the other car looks like it lost weight from it’s side.

Those Charlie Brown figures are definately Christmas ornaments (probably from Hallmark) as you can see the little loops on the top of their heads. But you do raise a good point, Matt. Has anyone ever done figures based on their “Great Pumpkin” costumes?

As a classic movie fan, I’m going to run with “Size 9 From Outer Space” as my favorite from this group. Making it in black and white was a nice touch.

I love the Haunted Snack Mansion. That’s possibly a cooler decoration than some of the fancier skull heads and mist-releasing cauldrons I’ve seen. Shame I don’t have a use for all those snacks, not being a fan of potato chips or Doritos. I haven’t seen it at work; I only just saw the Monster Cereals for the first time yesterday.

King JLA: They didn’t change shape; the alt-color image shows them submerged in icy water!

8th! Size 9 is great; though it did have some reaaaaaaly tough competition this year!

Matt

Having just returned from Target (sadly I did not purchase anything for myself) I can tell you that the Doritos Mansions were going for $5.95. That’s right, 6 bucks. A bargain if there ever was one.

Yeah, Size 9 is my favorite of this lot.

I love the fact that Slimer has a 40oz at the keg party.. So awesome.

“Maybe if it blew me. ”

X-E MATT. Shame on you.

This is the kind of comment I’d expect from myself. I expect a higher level of classiness from you.

What is the world coming to?

Why wasn’t I invited to the monster party? Put me down for this one. Great job!

Saw the trailer for Paranormal Activity. It looks good.
I saw Toy Story 2 this afternooon. It’s so great in 3D.

So far, there are no sightings of El Muerto down here. Of course, the month’s still young. One of the few
things that still scare me is sleep paralysis, yeah I
know I mentioned it it the last blog. It feels like
some strange force is holding you down on the bed. I
hate it when it happens. I live next door to a haunted shed. A man actually commited suicide in it. Sometimes,
when people tried to close it, it opens all by itself.
It still stands there. It’s amazing that it hasn’t rotted
away after all these years. Matt the dioramas all look great.

Happy SNT!

When I first glanced at this post’s title, I thought the Doritos changed color and I was so stoked. Cars are good too though.

The dioramas are all impressive, nice job to all those who did them!

I have had only sketchy computer usage for the past week. I have had three crashes followed by three factory restores. I’m trying to buy a new one without breaking the bank, I don’t think that’s possible unless I get one of those sucky minis. Ah well. Overtime here I come!

Chestnuts roasted by kb @ 10/10/2009 9:21 PM

I’m going to drag the boyfriend to the Toy Story double feature tomorrow afternoon. YAYNESS.

Loving all of the die-o-ramas. Great work everybody!

I have returned from Halloween Horror Nights in Orlando. Here is a brief recap of some the houses:

Leave it to Cleaver – It’s a meat factory set in the 1950s. I’ll give you one guess what the secret ingredient is (hint: soylent green). Best house by far. Very well done theme with some great production value.

The Wolfman – Based on the movie that doesn’t even come out until next year. Good production values but not very many scares. Very few actual Wolfman appearances. Most scares were done by townspeople or gypsies. Those aren’t very scary at all

Silver Screams – The gimmick is a movie theater presenting different scenes from popular horror flicks, including Shaun of the Dead, The Strangers, The Phantom of the Opera(?), The Thing, My Bloody Valentine, and Army of Darkness. Very well done house with great production values. The My Bloody Valentine room got me good. 2nd best house

The Spawning – Think CHUD (the movie, not the website). Radioactive ooze makes sewer creatures. Pretty lame house without many scares. Instantly forgettable.

I’ll do more posts later on the other attractions. I highly recommend Halloween Horror Nights if you are in the area. It is a bit pricey, but probably the best Halloween experience you will get.

Another good crop of entries for the Die-O-Rama contest! I like how a lot of these ones use toys/action figures/Christmas ornaments. I find the styling on the “Size 9 from Outer Space” very distinctive and well-done. I like the “McNugget Haunted House” because it just plain looks fun. All that’s missing is a bowl of barbeque sauce for them to dive into like in that commercial.
I just noticed that in the “Monster Keg Party,” the monster action figures are wearing masks. I imagine this was to make their faces look more distinctive on-camera. That’s actually kind of ingenious, since it allows them to have more detailed facial expressions than the figures themselves. Also. the use of differen-sized cutouts in the background creates a nice sense of depth and scale. Well done!

Chestnuts roasted by Hoverbored @ 10/10/2009 9:57 PM

Love that there’s a photog gravestone in “Size 9 from Outer Space.” And it’s great how much stuff is going on in the background of “Monster Keg Party” that I didn’t notice at first, like the tiny Freddy and Jack Skellington. These are really making me wish I’d taken more (and better) pics of my own die-o-rama.

My friends got me some rare Boo Berry because they knew it would make me love them forever, and I ate it two meals a day, for three days. Also, I accidentally typed “Boob Berry” at first.

Lonestar76, I get sleep paralysis sometimes, and I’m always terrified that I’ll be stuck with my face in my pillow and suffocate.

Happy Halloween SNT ya’ll !!! It’s very chilly in my neck of the woods. Hopefully you’re enjoyin the cool temps too.
Time for some horror flicks and junkfood.

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 10/10/2009 10:25 PM

Happy SNT everyone, I’ve been looking for great Halloween eps of TV shows and wondered if anyone had any favourites they wanted to share. Mostly I’m talking sitcoms, stuff that’s light and funny, but I suppose anything would do. Now I’ve already thought of the obvious here, mainly the Simpson’s Tree House of Horror specials, but it doesn’t have to be specifically Halloween related, rather just a little spooky.

One show that always seemed to have a good Halloween ep was Dharma and Greg, every year after the first they’d do something both hilarious and (very mildly) spooky, so any cheesy sitcom specials any one wants to share(or otherwise out of place “spooky” episodes)

Hobbitsubculture, I also was impressed by the detailing in the Monster Keg Party. Also, I’ve been considering buying Boo Berry (they have the scary cereals at the local Target), but I don’t like cereals with marshmallows.

I’m starting to get an idea what criteria Matt might have used to evaluate dioramas. Among other things, there’s scale/spectacle, level and quality of detail, originality of concept, and how much fun it is to look at. I imagine the reason it was so hard to judge is that no single diorama has a monopoly on all these traits.

Chestnuts roasted by Hoverbored @ 10/10/2009 10:34 PM

Ultra- we got snow today… Not a ton, but enough for a snowman! And, word from the weatherman is a ‘winter storm’ is starting tomorrow night! So, fall may have been short here, but I will feel okay about decorating for Christmas a week after Halloween if this cold continues. :D

Chestnuts roasted by Kb @ 10/10/2009 10:40 PM

Hobbitsubculture= When it happens, concentrate on moving one hand. It doesn’t matter which one. It will bring you
out of it.

I’m watching Ice Age 2 on FX. Funny stuff. My trip to the mall came up with nothing much on Halloween. My
local Spencers had slim pickings. Macy’s is already
prepared for Christmas. Their tree is already up.
Hold on Christmas, you’ll have to wait. I want to enjoy Halloween and October. The skies here look so beautiful around sunset in October. I see FX is going to show Spider-Man 3, Ghost Rider, and Fantastic 4, Rise of The Silver Surfer. This is gonna rock.
