10/08/2009: Madballs Jumpers & Halloween Popcorn!

I’m thrilled that we’re almost in the middle of October, and I’m still managing to find new Halloween stuff. Years of doing these Countdowns has taught me that Halloween’s “premiere” month is September. By the time we get to late October, we’re usually wading through piles of red stockings and candy canes to find one lone ghost. Not this year, and here’s a case-in-point:

From Wilco, it’s Madballs Jumpers! I have no way of proving that these are intended to be Halloween toys specifically, but the odds are pretty good. And heck, even if they aren’t Halloween exclusives, at least they’re a new officially licensed Madballs product!

This year, I’ve noticed the normal Madballs toys for sale in the Halloween sections of department stores, supermarkets and wherever else ghoulish goods are sold. It’s odd to see Madballs living an aisle away from Wheat Thins, but in this case, odd is great. Still, those Madballs definitely aren’t special editions — they’re the same ones that have been on sale for well over a year. It’s nice to see them with improved store locations, but it would’ve been even nicer if they had limited edition pumpkin graphics on the packages. I don’t ask for much.

Toys “R” Us had three versions of the Jumpers available, which either means that the collection has three versions in total, or that some idiot customer bought out the additional versions before I made my grand entrance, flanked by petal chuckers and an aide-de-camp. I’m betting on the former, mainly because I don’t feel like losing sleep over the thought that I don’t have a complete collection of Madballs Jumpers.

Wilco picked a nice trio of characters to become immortalized as gum-giving spring toys. From left to right, we have Bash Brain, Skull Face and Horn Head. Definitely a nice set, though the lack of an Oculus Orbus means that I cannot write a big “10″ on my judging scorecard. Fortunately for Wilco, I am frivolous with partial numbers. “9.9.”

Madballs Jumpers are essentially cheapo suction-cup boosted spring toys, which don’t work well and wouldn’t be much fun even if they did. But then, nobody who buys these things is interested in the stupid springing feature. We just want gum that comes out of something attached to Skull Face.

Each Jumper comes with five gumballs. The gumballs aren’t exactly vending machine-worthy in size, but they are individually flavored. (Which is to say, yellow gumballs are lemon, purple are grape, and so on. Upon further review, “individually flavored” is a stupid way to describe them. I take it back.)

I’m chewing, and the gum is okay, but make no mistake: I never would’ve paid 2.99 for five gumballs if they didn’t come with a suction-cupped plastic Madball.

From one reason to cheer to another! Family Time has unveiled a new line of Halloween Microwave Popcorn Bags, with the idea being that you’d hand ‘em out to trick-or-treaters. This seems totally brilliant to me. How have I never considered the glories of mini microwave popcorn bags as trick-or-treat booty before?

If you’re sworn by blood oath to provide sustenance to masked strangers on Halloween night, this is such an awesome way to stand apart from the pack. They’re different enough to make your home a memorable stop, but not so different that you’re going to offend and alienate all of the small vampires and rock whores who come begging for free candy.

But be warned, these treats come with a trick. The directions on the bags instruct you to put ‘em in the microwave for three minutes. I can confirm that a miniature bag of popcorn would set your entire neighborhood ablaze if you left it cooking in the microwave for three full minutes. 90 seconds is more apropos.

Under normal circumstances, this is the kind of “Halloween thing” that I’d admire from afar and not bother writing about. Upon a rookie’s glance, the popcorn might seem too simple and “blah” for me to meet my description requisite of 250 words. Think again, because there’s something special about this popcorn. Something called food coloring.

Indeed, in addition to butter, the kernels are also soaked in dried bits of orange dye, which turns the popped corn from its usual shade of white/yellow to something that can only be described as white/yellow/ORANGE. Amazing! I’ve been waiting for a Pop Qwiz revival for fifteen years, and now, finally, I have it! And I got Halloween-themed spider packaging to boot! I am way too content for it to really only be Thursday.

Orange buttered popcorn tastes just like regular buttered popcorn, but it’s messier. Fingers are rarely ready for photo shoots after spending time in a bag of microwaved popcorn, but with this particular brand, your hands end up looking as if some kind of extraterrestrial sick dog puked on them.

Finally, we have this Picture of Autumn Leaves Taken From Inside My Car When I Went Shopping, if only to remind you/myself that some of the best things about Halloween aren’t the ones that I normally write about.

I’ve also noticed there’s more Halloween stuff late in the game than usual. Even Dollar Tree hasn’t put out too much Christmas stuff yet. I can’t afford any of it right now (I just barely paid my rent), but it’s nice to know that it’s there.

And the trees are starting to turn nice colors here in Southern New Jersey, too. I can’t wait for the ones over my porch to turn colors. They were a gorgeous shade of yellow last year.

Nice construction paper for those reviews, Matt!

The fall colors have become the best part of the season to me. There is something very idealistic about the thought of kids leaving their houses at dusk on a mild Halloween night to tromp through crisp leaves that really makes me happy. We have amazing trees here in southern Ohio and the colors are starting to look amazing!

EtHM: Well, X-E always had strong production value.

Ghosted by Matt @ 10/08/2009 9:05 PM EDT

Nice. I told my wife that I’d see those Madball suction cup thingies on X-E soon enough and she rolled her eyes. This’ll teach her…

Shops here in Oz have only just started putting up Halloween decorations, and they are pretty lame. X-E is my one true Halloween outlet. :)

Generic yet extremely true statement: I LOVE FALL!!!!

Ghosted by Jess @ 10/08/2009 9:33 PM EDT

I want some of that popcorn, too. I remember Pop Qwiz, it didn’t last long enough!!! I loved getting a bag full of blue popcorn!

Ghosted by Palmerholic @ 10/08/2009 9:34 PM EDT

Kind of weird that when the new versions of Madballs came out a year or two ago,I only bought two,and they’re two of those three. (Hornhead and Skullface) I’m telling you this because I know you care. :)

Ghosted by Kid Nicky @ 10/08/2009 9:38 PM EDT

I must find that popcorn!

And I love the Fall photo. What a great month.

Ghosted by Mike Russo @ 10/08/2009 9:55 PM EDT

Oh man, this Halloween countdown has been awesome. Madballs really takes me back.

I wish I owned a microwave so I can have multi colored pop corn.

It sure is an great October night. Cool, breezy, and the leaves are all changing. December is right around the corner!!!

Ghosted by Darth Galvatron @ 10/08/2009 9:58 PM EDT

Matt, I’m lovin the countdown! Well done!

I’m restoring an antique popcorn machine to get it ready for Halloween; we’ve got a 50lb bag from Sam’s Club so it’s almost ready to test :-)

Our trees here are still green. :( Of course, the high was 90 today. But there’s a cold front a-comin’ tonight, and the high is supposed to be 66 or something tomorrow. Sounds good to me! I can remember it being in the 80s up until the second week of November here.

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 10/08/2009 10:15 PM EDT

Lol our trees here have almost no leaves-
This countdown is getting better and better :D

We got the first snowfall in my neck of the woods today, it seems unseasonably early to get such a big dump. It seems like your still appreciating the beautiful colors of fall matt, what time of year do you usually see the snow?

Ghosted by Ryder @ 10/08/2009 10:27 PM EDT

Matt – THANK YOU for all your hard work lately. I have been loving that XE shares my fall loving spirit so much recently. I have recently had a shitty time of things and this helps. Thanks.

Ghosted by Muppet Baby @ 10/08/2009 10:29 PM EDT

Rider- It SNOWED?!?! Where the hell do you live?

Muppet Baby-There’s plenty of fish in the sea. Or apples in the bucket,if you want to get Halloweenish. Or posts in the Bitner blog,if you want to get X-Eish.
The point is,just get out there and start throwing yourself at some males, and eventually one will catch you.

Ghosted by Kid Nicky @ 10/08/2009 10:34 PM EDT

I need to go shopping and pick up some halloweeny stuff before the end of the month. Maybe I’ll hit the local Target tomorrow or something.

All of the leaves around here (Metro Detroit) are still mostly green. It is getting a wee bit colder, though.

Ghosted by Darth Poop @ 10/08/2009 10:42 PM EDT

Beautiful foliage there, Matt! I’m jealous as hell. The trees are still green here. :( It felt like a greenhouse outside earlier today, but then the storms came through. The more I think about it, the more I realize that I really don’t like rain at all, especially when it causes leaky holes to form in my ceiling and drop plaster and rusty disgusting water all over my love seat while I’m out eating shitty overpriced food at the Olive Garden. Seriously, nine bucks for a bowl of pasta with like three tablespoons of sauce on it? What the fuck is that shit?

My thoughts are so all over the place right now. I’m beginning to wonder if I’ve developed ADHD or something.

Ghosted by Annette @ 10/08/2009 10:43 PM EDT

I’m one of a likely few canuck visitors of XE, been coming here since 2002, but mostly lurking in the sidelines. It’s a little early to get the kind of snow dump we got overnight but not unheardof

Ghosted by Ryder @ 10/08/2009 10:45 PM EDT

Madballs are awesome! I like when the leaves start to change color too. Because that means fun and better temps. are ahead.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 10/08/2009 10:55 PM EDT

!!!!! Holy Molars!!!!! When I saw that popcorn, I instantly thought of Pop Qwiz!!! Sooooooo pumped for that! I, too, have been waiting for that to come back… that and Alpine White bars.

Halloween is great! We got the Halloween Countdown in full effect, lots of awesome stuff in stores, revivals of old treasures and I finally decided on my costume for a Halloween wedding I’m going to! Can this time of year get any better?!

Ghosted by Starsmudge @ 10/08/2009 11:08 PM EDT

I would have never called it “pop qwiz.” I think marketing it with that gameshow commercial and the “gameshow” style name was what killed it. They should have focused on the color, not the mystery.

Ghosted by Kid Nicky @ 10/08/2009 11:26 PM EDT

Nice post, Matt. I grew up in the Jersey suburbs, but moved into Manhattan this year. This is my first autumn in the city and I must admit it’s different. That final photo made me realize I need to go home for a weekend this month.

On the plus side though I live within walking distance of three giant Halloween stores. NYC has its perks.

Ghosted by Murph @ 10/08/2009 11:35 PM EDT

Cameron Where are you that it’s still 90? I hope it’s somewhere like Hawaii. That would be nice…

I watched Freddy Vs. Jason tonight. Man, that that girl had huge….eyes….

Ghosted by Darth Galvatron @ 10/08/2009 11:45 PM EDT

Darth Galvatron

Hah! Hawaii, I wish. I’m in Waco, TX. A mass of warm air has been raising the temperature all week. We started in the 70s. Today it hit 90, and with the high humidity, it felt like 98. (supposedly, anyway, i don’t think it felt that hot).

Tonight, a massive cold front is supposed to hit, bringing the lows down as low as 49, and lots of thunderstorms. Hopefully it won’t fizzle out.

This type of weather is nothing new. It’s just Texas.

Hah, I also watched bits and pieces of Freddy Vs. Jason. Yes….great big…eyes. I enjoyed looking at her eyes. They were very nice. :D

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 10/08/2009 11:51 PM EDT

Matt- Thank you.

Ghosted by PlantMonster @ 10/08/2009 11:52 PM EDT

Awwww,

Bash Brain, Skull Face and Horn Head, were the only Mad Balls I was able to obtain. I remember that Oculus was a Mad Ball that seemed to be more rumored than a real. Come to think of it, haven’t seen an Oculus in real life.

Ghosted by Halloween @ 10/08/2009 11:58 PM EDT

Dude! I totally had the original MadBall version of Horn Head back in the 80’s! :D (And yes, I’m female. My parents were awesome like that.)

Ghosted by WordFuzion @ 10/08/2009 11:59 PM EDT

Cameron Yes, yes they were….

Hopefully you’ll get an Autumn soon.

I have a question, who’s the moron who started the idiotic fad of putting ‘ista’ at the end of everything?

Fashionista? Recessionista? Maxxanista?

Holy fuck is that annoying…

Ghosted by Darth Galvatron @ 10/08/2009 11:59 PM EDT

I never have had a madball but I bet my male cousins did. I love them though now as an adult.

That orange popcorn looks like cheddar popcorn! I have only had the kind that comes in tins around Christmas. I should get some that you pop yourself, warm fresh cheddar popcorn probably tastes really good.

I would buy the little ankle biters microwave popcorn but I would be afraid of them or their parents burning it and shaking their fist in the air in anger at me. I guess I would give them two a piece for a do over. If the world was more trusting I would make up some homemade chex mix or muddy buddies (chex mix w/ melted chocolate on it) and pass them out in sandwich bags. That would be awesome.

This last 3 days every time I eat something my chest hurts until it’s digested. It sucks to be afraid of eating food. I think it’s a side effect of a new medicine I am taking so I cut the dose in half to see if that helps. I hope it helps I have a can of Pillsbury pastries w/ chocolate frosting in the fridge I got this weekend marked down that is calling my name but I don’t want to eat them until I know I can fully enjoy them.

Colors are starting to change here in northern Indiana. It’s been cold and near constant rain for about the past week.

Ghosted by ericnrosesmom @ 10/09/2009 12:32 AM EDT

Oops, sorry for the double post, I hit enter by mistake. That Ninja Turtle bowl the orange popcorn is in is still in my mom’s cabinet.

Ghosted by ericnrosesmom @ 10/09/2009 12:44 AM EDT

It doesn’t look much like Autumn here much yet. Some leaves have started to fall. Of course I live in South
Texas. You can still hear the cicadas. Matt, I see you
have a TMNT ceareal bowl. I think I still have mine somewhere. I know it’s still too early for Christmas, I
saw the Lego Advent Calendar for 2009 heading your way Matt. I’m going to my local mall Saturday. I’ll see what cool Halloween stuff they have.

Ghosted by Lonestar76 @ 10/09/2009 1:22 AM EDT

Autumn leaves, orange colored popcorn, too early to turn the heat on so I have to sit around drinking tea, and wearing a sweatshirt. Oh how I love fall.

However, JC Penny is all decked out for Christmas:

Haven’t seen the person who posted it last year around these parts….

Okay, so I’m finally sorting through the Die-O-Rama winners…they will be posted tomorrow. :)

Ghosted by Matt @ 10/09/2009 2:23 AM EDT

My parents gave out mini microwave popcorn last year or year before. One year they gave out Halloween themed snack packs of crackers — like Cheezits and such. My dad picks them out so they’ll “stand out.” (They get hundreds of kids).

Good to see the Halloween countdown rolling on. I’ve been around, just quiet.

Ghosted by Reni @ 10/09/2009 2:23 AM EDT

Anyone who gives out Cheez-Its for Halloween is a hero.

We usually go overboard and give out Ziploc bags full of various candies, not so much because we’re charitable, but because I always have a surplus of Halloween candy after writing about it for two months.

Hoping there’s a fair amount of trick-or-treaters this year, especially considering the likelihood that we’ll be home on Halloween night. (Which is a Saturday, meaning that we’ll have our first ever Halloween SNT.)

Ghosted by Matt @ 10/09/2009 2:31 AM EDT

Thanks. As if I didn’t have enough of a hankering for TMNT cereal I remember from ages ago, you go and put up a picture of the bowl it came in.

Ghosted by Blunder @ 10/09/2009 3:01 AM EDT

I’m gonna see if I can find those Madballs poppers when I go out today to start getting our Halloween costumes. Can’t wait to see the die-o-ramas. :)

Ghosted by Jason @ 10/09/2009 8:54 AM EDT

Matt, are you going to be posting all of the die-o-rama entries? Or only the winners?

Ghosted by Pasta @ 10/09/2009 8:56 AM EDT

I had the same TMNT cereal bowl! Two actually, Rafael and Donatello. I will call my mom and see if she still has them. I forgot how much use they got!

Ghosted by JillS @ 10/09/2009 9:02 AM EDT

Well, we thought Autumn was here, until my mom told me it’s supposed to be 90 today-_- Then I remembered Alabama doesn’t get an Autumn. We have two seasons here: Hot and Cold. *sigh* I want to live some place with a real Autumn. I’ve heard Ashville North Carolina is nice…

Weather disappointments aside, I decorated the house for Halloween:) Orange & black wreath on the door, spider webs on the mailbox, and pumpkins on the porch (one orange, one white). In a couple of weeks, I’m going to a local pumpkin patch with friends to pick our own pumpkins, then back to the house for carving, hot cider and the X-E Halloween Jukebox!

Strange… I went to a Wilco show last weekend and they didn’t plug those things at all!

Frost on the roof, lawn, windshield this a.m… supposed to see some flurries overnight. Ah, Minnesota.

Ghosted by jimbutsu @ 10/09/2009 9:14 AM EDT

Cheetara, as a Bama girl who moved to NC, I can sympathize. If it makes you feel any better, where I am in NC, there is a nip in the air, but we’ve not seen anything that looks nearly as fall-y as Matt’s pic above.

Matt, I second what Muppet Baby said. The site is rocking my Halloween face off lately. I’ve been inspired. I goofed off at work this week and compiled a youtube playlist of a bunch of Halloween themed sitcoms. I’m still working on it if you guys have any suggestions! I’ll link it to my name.

Ghosted by velouria_78 @ 10/09/2009 10:00 AM EDT

Yeah Madballs stuff. I love the picture of the leaves Matt! I live in Chicago and the leaves haven’t started changing color much yet. I think they’ll just stay green and fall off. So your pic of orange and red tree parts filled me with joy :-)

Ghosted by Dantheman137b @ 10/09/2009 10:02 AM EDT

velouria_78: Where in Alabama are you from? I’m currently situated in Montgomery, having just moved back from Atlanta (went to college there). Do you find that NC is generally more tolerant of “different” folks (read: weirdos) then Alabama, or is it about the same?

Ghosted by Cheetara @ 10/09/2009 10:13 AM EDT

Hahaha, well, I’m from a middle of nowhere tiny town in north AL. And it was not the most weirdo friendly place to grow up, but I actually went to Auburn for undergrad and it was okay. Our ranks were small, but super tight, so there were no tiny factions of weirdos. Bama weirdos stick together! I promise you, we probably know some of the same people.

I actually live in Chapel Hill, which is like an island in the middle of NC. It is incredibly tolerant. I love it here, but I gotta admit, I sometimes miss being the only weird kid in town. ;)

Ghosted by velouria_78 @ 10/09/2009 10:28 AM EDT

In early grade school I preferred reading over recess. Late grade school found me getting into anime and wanting to discuss it with everyone (whether they wanted to or not). I did the grunge thing in junior high/early high school, then just after high school I discovered the tiny Alabama goth scene and began blaring industrial music from my car. Needless to say, I’ve always made people around here slightly uncomfortable (even though I’m very polite- my friends’ parents all love me).
