The Halloween Cocktail!

I've been reading Halloween cocktail recipes for years, and since drinking heavily was most certainly in the cards after the week I've had, it seemed like a good time to stop reading and start making.

I found the recipe over at this site. I wish it had a cool name like "Agent Orange" or "Sunshine Reaper," but the site only refers to it as a "Halloween Cocktail." Am I allowed to rename cocktails if I swiped the recipes? Let's pretend I am. This is an "Agent Orange." It's wonderful.

Combine two ounces of bourbon, three ounces of orange juice and the juice of half of a lemon in a cocktail shaker. Shake and strain into a glass full of ice. Top it off with some ginger ale. (The recipe doesn't specify how much ginger ale, so let's just say "to taste.")

I only drink whiskey when I have absolutely no idea that it's in what I'm drinking, so I had some reservations, but this is delicious. It tastes almost exactly like a Navy Grog, which makes no sense at all since Navy Grogs have an entirely different set of ingredients. The truth is, I just like writing the word "grog."

Wondering how this drink ties in with Halloween? The official recipe calls for unpitted olives with pumpkin faces carved on as the garnish. YES. YES, YES YES. I've never known olives to be a candidate for garnish in a fruity whiskey drink, but I will never, ever argue with an excuse to carve olives up like jack o' lanterns. Oh, the fun I had.

Unfortunately, you'll need all of the above to whip up a batch of Halloween Cocktails Agent Oranges. Still totally worth it. I love blaming alcoholism on Halloween enthusiasm.

Your challenge: Raid your liquor cabinet and search online. I guarantee that you'll find at least one Halloween-themed cocktail to enjoy using whatever you've already got. Well, unless you're fifteen. And you very well may be, since I usually just write about toys and candy. For the rest of you, I can think of no better way to spend this perfect dead leaf evening than with a glass full of something evilly named. Good luck!

I will say this regarding subtitles: (My, but I’m chatty tonight.) My mom likes to watch TV with the closed captioning on and I hate that because my eyes are naturally drawn to the text and I find myself missing the action. Also I do dislike knowing what the characters are going to say before they say it.

On a happy note, I just got to see my Rangers win their home opener in a big way. It is a good night.

I watched the Mist a few weeks back for the first time. Also a fucking awesome movie. I held off for so long because some of Stephen King’s material doesn’t translate well to film, and I LOVED his short story, but damn that was a good flick. Different from the story, especially the ending, but great nonetheless.

Has anyone heard from Goob lately?

Chestnuts roasted by Bill @ 10/03/2009 9:53 PM

I think the Mist got her.

Oooooh!

No, actually I haven’t. Hope she’s OK.

Oh geez, the flying things just got in the store. Damn this movie is scary.

Now let me just say first off, that I’m not against subs, I’ve watched and thoroughly enjoyed subbed films and animation. It is certainly true that the original voice of an actor is an important part of their performance.

But a movie is not just an actors voice, and I’m sure the DP or the animator did not intend for you to be looking at subtitles while watching their visuals onscreen. The nice thing about dvds of course is that you(generally)get a choice and in fact can go back and watch it the other way around.(which is what I try to do with anime)(and frankly I’m not reading ANYTHING at 1:30 in the morning if I don’t have to)

AHHHHH! They just went to the pharmacy! Holy CRAP! So scary!

Man, haven’t been this scared since Aliens back in the day.

Seriously? I’m the only one on SNT watching scary movies. Man this thing is wigging me out. No more talk in case people haven’t seen it. Yikes!

I got Myke’s Light Hard Lemonade, a half a bottle of Pennsylvania Dutch Spiced Apple Wine and one of those cans of Bacardi Strawberry Daiquiri Mix. No food coloring, but I do have various packets of Kool Aid inlcuding like a whole unwrapped display of Ghoul-Aid. I also have some packs of unflavored gelatin. So… I could make Ghoul-Aid Jello shots but I could only mix them with hard lemonade. Or maybe some concoction of apple wine and apple Kool Aid. Hmmm…

Man, that is messed up. Damn you Steven King!!!!!GAHHHHH (Terror Claws’ brain breaks)

Happy SNT, XE! I’m spending the evening flipping through channels and sipping bloody marys. Not very fally/halloweeny, but they’re my favorite of all mixed drinks.

Glad those pics finally posted. Hope it wasn’t any trouble to you, Matt, if you had to go in and approve it first.

Norbert,

What?! Why was I thinking it was another week until that came out. I can’t wait to see it. These will actually be my first 3-D movies I’ve ever seen in theaters, I’m pretty excited. Let us know how it goes!

Terror Claws: Wait till you get to the end. I hope it hasn’t been spoiled for you yet already. I know there’s been a lot of chatter about it around here lately, but just ignore it. It’s soooo much better if you don’t expect it.

I used to have this roommate that insisted on watching all movies or TV with the subtitles on. I’m talking American/English movies. Drove me crazy. I definitely prefer subtitles over dubbing when it comes to foreign films, but if I’m just watching Seinfeld or whatever, wtf? I mean he wasn’t deaf or anything. What’s the point?

My only complaint with foreign subtitles though (and I think someone else brought this up) is when they’re just inaccurate. I minored in French and speak it fairly well and I can’t tell you how many French films I’ve seen where I was like, “What the? That’s not what he said!” Or, it was the other way around where I’ve seen movies in class that were in English, but we watched them with the French subtitles and whoever did the subtitles was way off.

As for Anime, I guess it’s because I’m fairly ignorant of Anime in general, but I don’t care if there’s dubbing in that. That’s the only exception where I prefer dubbing. I think it’s because it’s just mouths opening and closing and you don’t get the real performance of an actor that you would get in a live action movie, so I don’t feel like I’m missing anything. But, I don’t watch enough Anime to really know the difference between good Anime acting and bad. I’m sure someone like Cheetara can tell the difference. I don’t think you’re a snob for preferring subtitles there. I’ve been called a music snob before, and I don’t deny it. After DJ’ing college radio for over 10 years, my tastes are pretty particular and I turn my nose up at a lot. I embrace my inner music snobbery.

Screw dubbing, screw subtitles. I say, the best way to watch a foreign film is to watch the American Remake of it! ‘Merica!

RHINO – OOOOOOHHH YEAH! LET’S GO RANGERS!! :)

Happy (late) SNT, y’all. I spent the day at the local FALL FEST peddling shit for the high school I teach at. Made over 150 bucks in 2 hours, so it was all good.

Watching “The Goonies” right now, which makes me all happy inside.

….Wayne Campbell: So, do you come to Milwaukee often?

Alice Cooper: Well, I’m a regular visitor here, but Milwaukee has certainly had its share of visitors. The French missionaries and explorers began visiting here in the late 16th century.

Pete: Hey, isn’t “Milwaukee” an Indian name?

Alice Cooper: Yes, Pete, it is. In fact , it’s pronounced “mill-e-wah-que” which is Algonquin for “the good land.”

Wayne Campbell: I was not aware of that.’

DJ D

When I was young and would watch the news and Jeopardy at night in bed, I would turn the captions on in case something was said that I didn’t understand, I could look at the captions real quick.

May or may not be the reason your roommate did it.

Terror Claws- I’ve revved up the Rocky Horror Picture Show here. Is that scary enough?

Chestnuts roasted by PlantMonster @ 10/04/2009 12:26 AM

The only thing I HAVE to watch subtitled is anime! Anything else, I’ll just watch the dub.
Terror Claws: Hope your enjoyin the Mist. It’s really good. ESPECIALLY the ending. Which I won’t spoil for you of course.

Little Nemo for the NES is such a awesome game! I wish it would come out for the VC…

Rammstein has to be the most brutal and shocking show to see ever.

I remember watching the Family Values tour video way back, and Rammstein’s performance literally scarred me for life! The poor lil’ synth guy… Rammstein still is a great band however. Buck Dich!

The last concert I’ve been to is Soulfly! It was pretty crazy…

It’s a rainy night, and I napped for a REALLY long time today, so I’m not tired at all. So…I should watch a movie or something. I think I’ll pop Poltergeist into the laptop and watch with the headphones on.
