The Halloween Cocktail!

I've been reading Halloween cocktail recipes for years, and since drinking heavily was most certainly in the cards after the week I've had, it seemed like a good time to stop reading and start making.

I found the recipe over at this site. I wish it had a cool name like "Agent Orange" or "Sunshine Reaper," but the site only refers to it as a "Halloween Cocktail." Am I allowed to rename cocktails if I swiped the recipes? Let's pretend I am. This is an "Agent Orange." It's wonderful.

Combine two ounces of bourbon, three ounces of orange juice and the juice of half of a lemon in a cocktail shaker. Shake and strain into a glass full of ice. Top it off with some ginger ale. (The recipe doesn't specify how much ginger ale, so let's just say "to taste.")

I only drink whiskey when I have absolutely no idea that it's in what I'm drinking, so I had some reservations, but this is delicious. It tastes almost exactly like a Navy Grog, which makes no sense at all since Navy Grogs have an entirely different set of ingredients. The truth is, I just like writing the word "grog."

Wondering how this drink ties in with Halloween? The official recipe calls for unpitted olives with pumpkin faces carved on as the garnish. YES. YES, YES YES. I've never known olives to be a candidate for garnish in a fruity whiskey drink, but I will never, ever argue with an excuse to carve olives up like jack o' lanterns. Oh, the fun I had.

Unfortunately, you'll need all of the above to whip up a batch of Halloween Cocktails Agent Oranges. Still totally worth it. I love blaming alcoholism on Halloween enthusiasm.

Your challenge: Raid your liquor cabinet and search online. I guarantee that you'll find at least one Halloween-themed cocktail to enjoy using whatever you've already got. Well, unless you're fifteen. And you very well may be, since I usually just write about toys and candy. For the rest of you, I can think of no better way to spend this perfect dead leaf evening than with a glass full of something evilly named. Good luck!

Last time I saw him Cheap Trick opened. Stellar show but if I had to chose, The Cramps would shine a little brighter.

I’m going to see Faster Pussycat tonight and I have my VHS copy of Decline of the Western Civilization 2 in hand to be signed. Hopefully they won’t take offense. :|

Nork: Wicked pictures! Not sure if I’ll be close enough to take pics, but may take my camera just in case.

Drew Do: I saw Rob Zombie once (he opened for KoRn back in 1999) and his stage show was quite entertaining. Fire, go-go girls, dancing robots, etc.

I’m finally alive with the Autumn spirit. The leaves are changing color and the harvest foods are hitting the grocery stores. I think that Maine is the perfect place for Fall, but it goes way too soon. Those violent pre-winter winds come howling in and tear the pretty foliage to the ground.
I bought some macintosh apples (The overpriced fruit, not the overpriced laptop), cider and some Shipyard Pumpkinhead Ale to start off the month long Halloween celebration.
I went to the local agricultural fair last weekend where I found a haul of vintage pulp detective novels going for 50 cents. I love the paintings on the covers and I think that private eyes are pretty awesome anyway. :D

nork: Love those pics, man. You were so lucky to get so close. I still haven’t seen him yet.

drew do: I’ve done some gigs with ex-members of Manson’s band (Daisy Berkowitz and Sarah Lee Lucas) and no one I’ve ever worked with has anything good to say about him.

Speaking of showmanship and theatrics, I’d give my left arm to see Rammstein live. I’m a HUGE fan and hopefully will get my chance next year. They’re gearing up for another tour and might actually come near here. They haven’t played in the States in years. Here’s what I’m talking about:

Bill: Seriously? I’m so jealous right now. They seem like they’ve got a pretty good sense of humor. I don’t think they’d mind. You’ll have to let me know how the show is.

be is down. I’d yell a bunch of of obscenities, though you’ve probably heard the Angry Video Game Nerd shout
them out.

They opened a display at one of our local museums. It’s called Haunted Heritage. It chronicles all the supernatural phenomena that have occured in my hometown.
My part of South Texas has had sightings of the
Chupacabra and La Llorona. Our local college has also
been the sight of trolls, little ones. We even have our
own Headless Horseman story here. Anyone interested in
this story, just Google El Muerto – The Headless Horseman
of South Texas.

I haven’t been to my local mall lately. Though I heard that The Asylum is a hit. It nearly scared the shit out
of my cousin’s daughter.

I have a recipe for a Corpse Reviver:

~~~~~~~~
3 cracked ice cubes
2 measures brandy
1 measure calvados
1 measure sweet vermouth
apple slice, to decorate
Put the ice, brandy, calvados and sweet vermouth in a cocktail shaker and shake until a frost forms. Strain into a tumbler and decorate with an apple slice.
~~~~~~~~

Maybe you could carve jack-o-lantern faces into the apple slice? BTW, I can’t wait to see the winning (and losing?) die-o-ramas.

I’m a big bourbon fan, and this sounds delicious. Thanks for sharing it!

Interesting idea, and I know some family members who might like it…but not me. I don’t drink. Liquor doesn’t agree with me at all.

This one is (high voice) awesome!
Ingredients1/2 oz. Irish Cream (Bailey’s)
1 1/2 oz. Schnapps, strawberry
1 tbsp. Grenadine
Glass to Use
Cocktail glass
Mixing Instructions
Shake grenadine and strawberry schnapps in a cocktail shaker with ice. Strain into a cocktail glass. Carefully add Bailey’s into the middle of the glass. If done right, it will form a blob on the bottom. Braaaaaaains…

Happy SNT ya’ll! It feels even more like Fall in my neck of the woods tonight. Hope ya’ll are enjoyin the chilly weather too. Most of my family doesn’t bother to make mix drinks like the one in this entry. They just drink straight up whiskey. Sometimes with chasers.

I am getting ready to go see “Paranormal Activity” tonight! I will report back to let you all know what I think!
In the meantime, I am just going to have some Jack, straight up, since that is the best Halloween drink I know of. ;-)

Happy Saturday Night Terror! I’m about to drink some more of that Dragonfruit Bacardi and watch Dario Argento’s Opera. I wonder why it is that his domestic DVD releases never have Italian voice options. It irks me to no end… I am a firm believer of watching foreign films in their intended languages. Just because some people are too damn lazy to read subtitles, doesn’t mean all of us are. *sigh* Anyway, I bought a couple sacks of Dum-Dums at the local Dollar Tree to give to the kiddies. And if we end up with leftovers, I have no qualms whatsoever about polishing them off myself:)

Chestnuts roasted by Cheetara @ 10/03/2009 8:38 PM

Thanks, Matt, I’ll give it a go without the whiskey!

I almost forgot about the Die-O-Ramas… can’t wait to see them!

Happy SNT, everyone! It’s almost a full moon!!!

Chestnuts roasted by Starsmudge @ 10/03/2009 8:45 PM

So this is SNT then? Cool. Can’t promise I’m here for the duration, but I’m in for now.

Count me in with the teetotalers, though my wife suggested that I should mention (since I like to tell people I know so often) SoCo burns a very pretty shade of purple.

Chestnuts roasted by Rhino @ 10/03/2009 8:59 PM

Happy SNT, folks!

Cheetara: I totally agree. I would much rather see subtitles than dubbing. Bad dubbing just takes so much away from the actor’s performance. People are lazy!

Chestnuts roasted by DJ D @ 10/03/2009 9:04 PM

DarkSide, I saw Paranormal Activity at a screening here in Boston last week, and fucking LOVED IT! Lived up to my expectations, which had been built up for nearly 2 years. I’ll be curious to hear what you thought of it. Have fun!

On a related note, what are peoples thoughts on watching a horror movie in a packed theater? People react to these kinds of movies differently. I’m more of the quiet type, and sitting next to people who prefer to whoop and holler, or respond to events by snickering and yelling obscenities, jars me out of the movie.

Happy SNT! I’m finally watching the Mist all the way through. Oooh, first spooky movie of the season! Wooooo!

Anyone else having fun?

Chestnuts roasted by Terror Claws @ 10/03/2009 9:16 PM

I don’t think I’ve ever seen a horror movie in a theater, unless you count Blair Witch. Not a big fan of the genre. The ones I have seen have been home with friends. I think I prefer that because you can comment on the film without feeling self-conscious, which I believe horror more naturally lends itself too.

Chestnuts roasted by Rhino @ 10/03/2009 9:17 PM

DJ D: People always think I’m an elitist because I prefer to watch Japanese animation in… *GASP*… Japanese. The only anime I don’t mind watching dubs for is Hayao Miyazaki’s films, and that’s because he can afford to hire decent folks to fill the roles. But yes, on the whole dubbing takes away from the actors’ performances, not to mention the jokes and such that are lost in translation. I would much rather see the money that would be used for dubbing go toward accurate English subtitling.

Chestnuts roasted by Cheetara @ 10/03/2009 9:20 PM

Cheetara, I also don’t get why people are so vehemently anti-subtitles. But then again, I watch subbed anime all the time so maybe I’m the weird one.

I really want some apple cider, but I’m too lazy to cart my ass down to the store to buy some. Maybe I’ll just have some chai tea instead.

Oh, I found Little Nemo for the NES today for like 6 bucks. I think I’ll be playing that pretty soon.

Chestnuts roasted by Annette @ 10/03/2009 9:23 PM

Haha, it always takes me so long to post. I hardly ever watch dubs. Not because I think they’re all bad– there are some good ones. It’s just…the majority of them irritate me.

Chestnuts roasted by Annette @ 10/03/2009 9:24 PM

Only subbed here too. And I totally agree about the horror movie commentary. They just raised the door on the loading dock and the mist is creeping in, as I said to my wife “You’re gonna die!”

Awesome.

Chestnuts roasted by Terror Claws @ 10/03/2009 9:32 PM

I don’t generally watch foreign films/TV as a rule, though when I see American stuff dubbed into other languages, and how bad that usually sounds, it isn’t hard to imagine the reverse.

Chestnuts roasted by Rhino @ 10/03/2009 9:32 PM

Annette: I’ve heard people say that reading subtitles is “too much work.” God bless America. Also, YAY to apple cider, chai tea and Little Nemo (I adore the movie).

Chestnuts roasted by Cheetara @ 10/03/2009 9:35 PM

I know someone like that. They almost ruined [REC] for me. Almost. I have this amazing annoyance blocker in my brain.
