10/02/2009: The Halloween Cocktail!

I’ve been reading Halloween cocktail recipes for years, and since drinking heavily was most certainly in the cards after the week I’ve had, it seemed like a good time to stop reading and start making.

I found the recipe over at this site. I wish it had a cool name like “Agent Orange” or “Sunshine Reaper,” but the site only refers to it as a “Halloween Cocktail.” Am I allowed to rename cocktails if I swiped the recipes? Let’s pretend I am. This is an “Agent Orange.” It’s wonderful.

Combine two ounces of bourbon, three ounces of orange juice and the juice of half of a lemon in a cocktail shaker. Shake and strain into a glass full of ice. Top it off with some ginger ale. (The recipe doesn’t specify how much ginger ale, so let’s just say “to taste.”)

I only drink whiskey when I have absolutely no idea that it’s in what I’m drinking, so I had some reservations, but this is delicious. It tastes almost exactly like a Navy Grog, which makes no sense at all since Navy Grogs have an entirely different set of ingredients. The truth is, I just like writing the word “grog.”

Wondering how this drink ties in with Halloween? The official recipe calls for unpitted olives with pumpkin faces carved on as the garnish. YES. YES, YES YES. I’ve never known olives to be a candidate for garnish in a fruity whiskey drink, but I will never, ever argue with an excuse to carve olives up like jack o’ lanterns. Oh, the fun I had.

Unfortunately, you’ll need all of the above to whip up a batch of Halloween Cocktails Agent Oranges. Still totally worth it. I love blaming alcoholism on Halloween enthusiasm.

Your challenge: Raid your liquor cabinet and search online. I guarantee that you’ll find at least one Halloween-themed cocktail to enjoy using whatever you’ve already got. Well, unless you’re fifteen. And you very well may be, since I usually just write about toys and candy. For the rest of you, I can think of no better way to spend this perfect dead leaf evening than with a glass full of something evilly named. Good luck!

Never been a fan of mixed drinks. I prefer wine.

If I sit here reading “The Raven,” staring at my authentic bust of Pallas Athena (that’s the statue that the title character sits on in the poem), and drinking a glass of fine ruby port, is that Halloweenie enough?

I’m only 15 plus five. :(

I can pretend though.

It’s okay Darth. I’d trade places if I could!

My personal Halloween favorite that is loosely related is
C3PO:
dash Cointreau, 1/2Peach schnapps, 1/2peppermint schnapps, 1 part pineapple juice, 1 part orange juice.
Captain Crunch:
Tequila Rose, Vanilla schnapps, Kahlua, cream, grenadine (equal parts)

Do

I see at least 5 ingrediants on your countertop, yet only one is really necessary.

I miss those Black Nazis that were suggested a couple of years ago.

Jagermeister and Mountain Dew Pitch Black II. RIP, delicious MT Dew.

From you guys who said hello in the last thread, hello to you here, things are going great. 9 more months and I’m a married man!

Matt,

No offense, but those olives turned out a bit better than the trix-o-lantern. Maybe you’re better off free-handing, you should try to free-hand your own trix rabbit, I bet it’d look killer! If you’re not much of a whisky drinker, you should try Maker’s Mark, it might change your mind. I bet it’d be stellar in Agent Oranges.

I read through the posts since you introduced George and his new digs, but either I missed the update on how he’s doing or it just wasn’t there. How is he?

Ghosted by nork @ 10/02/2009 11:37 PM EDT

nork: Welcome back! Ironically, I used an exacto to make these olives. (Which people suggested I use on the Trix O’Lantern.)

George is doing pretty good. He’s a strange crab, but he seems as happy as a moon crab living alone in a weird tank could be.

hey joker9866, I’d be interested in that recipe. I’m getting married exactly one year from today, and we’re having a spooky wedding. We’ve got zombie bride and groom cake toppers, and a drink called Vampire’s Kiss sounds awesome!!

Ghosted by kidneyboy @ 10/02/2009 11:45 PM EDT

Thanks!

It’s awesome to see this site alive again, the Halloween decorations look great!

I’m super pumped for Halloween this year. I’m in a new house in a neighborhood full of kids, my last neighborhood we literally had 3-4 groups of trick-or-treaters the entire night and I’m pretty sure one of the groups was a repeat. Very disappointing, especially considering we were dressed up and had the garage open with strobe lights, spooky decorations, and creepy sounds going that should have been fun for the kids, had they shown.

Matt, why you gotta be inspiring me with cocktail ideas now? I drank nearly all the liquor I had in two intense nights in the summer, and never regretted it until now. All I’ve got left are things that taste like oranges, bananas or Chinatown.

Well, I just like saying the word “smock”.
Or, wait, that wasn’t me. That was someone else.

hmm..not really a drinker, but I have this strange interest in mixed drinks that I don’t really understand, maybe it’s the odd names…which gets me to thinking, what would be in a Giant Ape Juice?

Ghosted by SevenYearsThisSunday @ 10/03/2009 12:08 AM EDT

I think Grape Pucker and Sprite should factor into a Giant Ape Juice. I don’t know dick about mixing drinks though, although I too am fascinated by drink recipes. My mom gave me a book of em when I was like 17 (thanks Mom) and my favorite that I tried was a Sloe Comfortable Screw. Mostly because it’s fun to say.

Ghosted by Nicole @ 10/03/2009 12:19 AM EDT

I’m not much of a drinker either. But I do need to get a hold of some white wine because it seems like every damn recipe I come across lately calls for it.

Curse the age barrier! At least I still have terrible B movies to enjoy.

Just yesterday I found out that Alice Cooper is playing here in 5 days. I now have my ticket:)

I might whip up an Agent Orange sometime, but I wonder if the olives are a necessity to get the full effect or if I can make do without them. I just hate those things, even if they are jack-o-olives.

That C3P0 that Bill was talking about sounds pretty good too.

Years ago before I knew squat about booze, I was DJ’ing a Halloween gig with like 4 other DJ’s and we decided to invent drinks named after all of us. We drew up a cool little spooky drink menu and also had drinks using dry ice so they were all smokey and everything. Anyways, I thought it would be cool to have a mixture of orange juice, cranberry, and vodka. Sounded good to me. Little did I know that already existed and is called a Madris. Well, for that night it was called a DJ D. Of course I just vainly wanted to see pretty girls go up to the bar all night and order one of me.

Cheetara: Way to go. I’ve always wanted to see him. I’m kind of bummed because The Psychedelic Furs played in Charlotte tonight and I really wanted to see them but didn’t have the time/money. Instead I went to work, stopped by Target, came home, ate dinner, and took a nap. Now I’m up again and talking to you nutballs. I guess that’s not so bad though.

Same thing we do every night, Pinky.

The most recent Halloween issue of Martha Stewart’s magazine includes several halloween themed cocktail recipes, including one for lemonade that uses black icecubes that slowly turn your drink from clear to inky black. I’m determined to use that this year.

Halloween cocktail, easy, find one of the flavors of Halloween Jones Soda, and add vodka!

Need to think of a fancy way to serve them, or some other types of alcohol which might compliment them.

To be smart,Giant Apes. :P

Actually, if I was gonna make a cocktail and call it Giant Ape Juice….hmm, vodka, grenadine, club soda and orange bitters….ne?

Oh, and watch out for that early fascination with the names and the flair of bartending. I started with Cocktail Time on Tiki Island, a far too addictive game linked off this site. 6 months down the road I’ve got a shaker, $400 worth of staple liquors and liqueurs and an itch in the back of my mind to order Cherry Heering from Germany to make a Singapore Sling.

Then school started, I stopped making money, and I lost a lot of interest.

Ghosted by Tutsuro @ 10/03/2009 2:39 AM EDT

Agent Orange looks to be a sweet drink (though I think “Sunshine Reaper” is more Halloween-y). Good to see you got a bottle of Knob Creek during the Drought of 2009. :) I’ll need something like that to take the edge off from the parents visiting the wife and I this weekend.

Although, I really can’t complain about Tresjolie9’s suggestion of Jones+vodka, especially since in the last few years Jones has all but printed on the label, “Here, mix alcohol with these!”

Hmm, can’t say I’m a drinker, but if I was, I’d be a whiskey drinker. I’ve had it a few times and it tasted good.
Eager to see the contest winners.

I don’t drink, but I can think of a few Halloween-themed beverages I’d like to try. They have Oreo cookie milkshakes, so why not make one with Halloween Oreos? Also, tonight I had a pumpkin pie shake from Jack in the Box. It’s not really Halloween-themed, but it is tasty!

Ghosted by Hoverbored @ 10/03/2009 3:44 AM EDT

The perfect Halloween drink is Whiskey and Apple Cider. It’s just perfect seasonal happiness.

Ghosted by WesGrotesk @ 10/03/2009 5:39 AM EDT

And if that’s not good enough start with any pumpkin beer, add cinnamon spice to the beer, and if you like to the Whiskey and Cider although that’s more of a Winter drink mostly if you warm it up.

Ghosted by WesGrotesk @ 10/03/2009 5:42 AM EDT

The tradition of using olives in savory drinks and cherries in sweet drinks was not standard until the early 20th century. So says a book I read about the history of cocktails (called “Imbibe!” — great little read.)

Ghosted by Talia @ 10/03/2009 6:37 AM EDT

My favorite Halloween drink is the Sewer Pipe. Take a tall glass of ice, add 1 shot of Bailey’s (the white chocolate is the best for this, but all flavors work), 1 shot of Blue Curacao, and fill to the top with Coke. It looks disgusting (it looks like a chemical sample from a sewer), but the taste is pretty good.

I like the name “Sunshine Reaper” better!

Ha ha suckas! You only have to be 19 to drink in Canada.

Darth Poop, you’re 20? I never thought someone my age read this blog. being really young in the 90s (and not quite alive in the 80s), it’s hard to relate to some of the talk here about old movies and toys. I still love reading Matt’s articles if only for funny writing and the happy mood it gives me after I read them. :D
About cocktails, I haven’t gotten drunk ever, since most of my friends don’t like to drink. I would like to, though, before I graduate college. I guess I should find some “bad influences” (not that I think drinking is bad).

A few favorites of mine that fit the season:

Crimson Death:
Ice
1 shot Vodka
1 shot Raspberry Syrup
Cola

Fill a Collins glass with ice, pour the vodka over ice, add syrup, then fill with cola.

Ganggreen:
12 oz. Mountain Dew
1 shot Spiced Rum
1 shot Johnny Walker Red

Put Mountain Dew in a Highball glass, add shot of rum followed by the shot of red label, stir.

Dr. Shocker:
6 oz. Dr. Pepper
1 oz. Aftershock

Pour DP into glass, add Aftershock, stir once.

The Mad Hungarian:
Ice
2 shots of Capt. Morgan’s Spiced Rum
12 oz. Rootbeer

Combine rootbeer and rum in cocktail shaker with ice, shake and strain into Highball glass.

Enjoy!

Ghosted by steelabjur @ 10/03/2009 10:26 AM EDT

Dang, forgot the most obvious one,

Nosferatu Juice:

1 oz. Coconut Rum
1 oz. Blue Curacao
1 oz. Spiced Rum
8 oz. Orange juice
Ice

Combine all three shots in shaker with ice, shake and strain into a Collins glass, fill with Orange Juice. A greenish ooze color should result.

This isn’t like the Halloween Cocktail but it is cold here this morning and Pumpkin Harvest coffee really is the perfect thing. Fresh Market gourmet coffee is my weakness.

Is Sierra Mist Cranberrysplash a seasonal soda? Because I just found some and I didn’t know if it has always been around since last year.

Ghosted by Bill @ 10/03/2009 10:51 AM EDT

Although that looks interesting, when life has me down I prefer a nice dram of fine scotch. Coincidentally, I also like it when life is going great. In fact, I’m holding a glass right now.

Ghosted by Tryclyde @ 10/03/2009 11:23 AM EDT

Bill- It has been appearing in mass quantities everywhere. It is my personal belief that they released it from its seasonal bonds and that it will now be available year round.

Cheetara

Lucky you! I’ve seen Alice Cooper twice, and out of all of the mainstream and underground shows I’ve been too, both of his shows were by far the best concerts I’ve ever been to. The guy is like 104 years old now and STILL rocks out for a solid couple hours or more just like he did back in the 70s!

His theatrics are AMAZING!!

Here are some of my favorite pics I took from one of the shows.

My mixed drink adventures at home usually start with what liquor do I have and what juice/soda won’t taste too bad with it.
My work, being as the word Hell is in the name of the restaurant, has a good list of drinks that would be considered Halloweeny and for the life of me I cannot think of a single one right now. I do know that they just started a new one called Devil’s something-or-other. I’m a terrible employee.

I saw Alice Cooper at Chastain Amphitheater a few years ago and boy did he rock. Welcome to my nightmare! Talk about stage theatrics!

Ghosted by Bill @ 10/03/2009 12:34 PM EDT

I have also heard that Alice cooper rocks in concert. People have also told me Rob Zombie’s show it really fun too.

On the other hand I have only heard bad things about Manson shows, unless you are totally obsessed with his type of grotesque for the sake of shocking people shows. The friends that went love the music but said the show was not fun at all like Cooper or Zombie, just really uncomfortable and gross. Too bad because I would like to see him live…

I would also like to see Gwar just for the hell of it.

I actually found this drink recipe in my inbox the other day for Candy Corn Cordials You actually infuse the vodka with candy corn! I was *this* close to making it when I saw you needed egg whites. WTF? No, seriously, WHY? Anyone want to make it and report back to me? I’ll give you a cookie.

Ghosted by Ann @ 10/03/2009 12:58 PM EDT

I love olives, but the thought of putting them with orange juice just sounds nasty. No offense. My favorite mixed drink isn’t Halloweeny at all but still really good.

Pineapple Paradise
2 shots coconut rum
1 shot Midori (sp?) melon
1 small can pineapple juice
crushed ice

Shake in a martini shaker until combined. Pour into glass and top with shredded coconut and a marschino cherry.

My favorite Mexican restaurant had orange margaritas a couple weeks ago. At least that looks like halloween even if it dosent taste much like it.

Count me as another person who barely drinks, but I did have a Strongbow cider last night. That’s…kind of Halloweenish, or at least fall-ish, I guess.

The jack-olive-anterns are cute.

I don’t drink, but I like MOCKtails! Maybe I’ll play around with some of these recipes and see how to improvise without alcohol, because in most cases, I think the flavored alcohol is what makes the drink… any ideas of MOCKtails for someone who doesn’t drink?

All I know are Shirley Temples and NOjitos…

Ghosted by Starsmudge @ 10/03/2009 1:20 PM EDT

The particular drink is designed to hide the whiskey flavor, and probably wouldn’t taste much different without it. (For nonalcoholic drinkers, this is an excuse to make pumpkin olives anyway.:)

Knob Creek gives me the same willies as SoCo and Wild Turkey (Yard Bird).

I dig Jonny Love Vodka. No mixers needed.
