My dying wish is for an owl/camel hybrid, which I call camowl.

Along came a giant fake spider.

My love/hate relationship with spiders is legendary. I must have at least three dozen books about spiders, ranging from grade school picture books to five-pound encyclopedias. I read about them constantly, and they fascinate me.

And yet, I'm an arachnophobe. Not one of those especially crazy arachnophobes who belt out operatic high notes at the sight of the smallest spider, but if they catch me by surprise, I flip. I'm completely aware of how ridiculous this is, as 99% of the time, the spiders I've encountered could not possibly harm me, and of all the tiny monsters we correctly and incorrectly classify with the "bug" banner, spiders are the ones who really couldn't care less about what I'm doing.

Why are so many of us afraid of spiders? According to articles like this, we might be able to blame evolution: A reflexive fear of spiders etched into our souls in response to our ancestors having to deal with the venomous beasts and their naughty bites. If that's true, I feel better. I only become a five-year-old girl in the presence of spiders because my great great great great great great great great great grandfather used to get his ass chewed off by them.

Whatever the reason, spiders have become a symbol of Halloween. They're as synonymous with this time of year as bats, witches, and any of the other things that share shapes with the Wilton mail-order catalog's current collection of cookie cutters. In fact, arachnids have become so closely associated with Halloween that retailers can successively sucker us into spending thirty bucks on giant, fake spiders.

That's why I'm here!

Man. I love those Spirit stores, but their prices are insane, and not in the cool Crazy Eddie way. I don't know how I let myself purchase their giant "Hairy Spider" with its ridiculous price tag of thirty bucks, but rest assured, it's way too much money to be spending on a fake spider, even considering its enormous souped-up pipecleaner legs.

They can only get away with a price like that because it's so early in the season. By the end of October, it wouldn't shock me to see these going for a lot less. (And after Halloween? Forget it -- they'll let you walk out of the store with one just for asking politely.)

I can't recommend the "Hairy Spider" at this price, but don't take that to mean that it isn't a quality item. It is. The fuzzy fur is top notch, and it has the cutest little alien cranberry eyes. Oh, and did I mention that its leg span is eight feet? Yeah, there's also that.

(click here to see the above photo, supersized!)

The legs are posable, and with a little work, the end results are pretty impressive. Interestingly, the size of the spider marks it as an outdoors-only item, but there's no way you could leave him outside: The fur would get ruined and he'd fall apart. So, if you're somehow okay with the price, you're going to be in the odd position of needing to find a spot in your house for an eight foot fake spider. I'm used to problems like these, but for the rest of the planet, it could be a dealbreaker.

The bendable whatevers underneath the spider's leg fur are pretty strong, and you can effectively pose the thing in any way you see fit. (This is much cooler than the usual gamut of faux spiders, who have zero ability to do anything but lie flat on the floor.) Actually, the more I look at the pictures and write about the spider, the more that ridiculous price tag starts to seem not so ridiculous. On the other hand, I'm an eternal sucker for anything with cranberries for eyes.

Not bad, but you may want to wait for the post-season sales.

Ahh the “giant house spider” or when I lived in Washington we called them Hobo spiders. Yeah they are huge. I dont really mind spiders. We let them live(outside) to keep down the bugs, but when you are watching t.v. and one of these bad boys just comes crawling up over the back of the couch right by your ear you will scream, jump up, brushing your body frantically, and your skin will crawl for hours. The worst is when you see one in your bedroom before bed and you go to get a shoe or glass to catch em and you come back and “where the hell did it GO!?” I cant sleep if I dont know where it is. I live in the desert now and no spiders in the house. Just black widows outside. They never come in. Good spiders.

Went to SPIRIT HALLOWEEN again and they had more stuff in. WAY over priced but better than nothing.

Of course the remakes are unnecessary. There are probably only 4 movies in the world that could really use a facelift to modernize them.

I vote for SOMETHING WICKED THIS WAY COMES. So close to being good but…

Anyone else?

My hubby just called me to let me know that he got an email saying that “Paranormal Activity” will be playing in Georgetown. Yay! Good news for us few Baltimore/DC area X-E people. Tickets go on sale tomorrow.

The only Pixar movie I have not seen is Cars… I just loathe Larry the Cable Guy so much that I couldn’t get over the fact that he was in it. My favorite has to be The Incredibles, especially Edna. “I never look back, dahling- it distracts from the NOW.”

I got an email saying Paranormal Activity is coming to Denver. Which is good news, I guess, but that is just as far from me as Boulder, so looks like I’m going on a road trip either way.

Paranormal Activity is awesome. My wife and I saw it last Thursday night at a sneak preview and I honestly had trouble sleeping. I can’t wait to hear what some fellow X-Eers have to say about the movie.

Manimal, that movie used to creep me out. I can’t explain it but it just did. Also, Watcher In The woods. Were those Disney?

The last time I thought I saw a giant spider was last year in my bathroom at 3am in the dark.. I smashed it with a bag of books. It turned out to be my keys and destroyed my auto-lock button. Honda charges $250 to replace those. FML!

Oh, and I just got an email that Paranormal Activity is showing in Atlanta. Why did I leave again?
At least there is a livestock auction here this weekend. sumbitch…

What’s Paranormal Activity? And Cheetara, how can you hate Larry the Cable Guy, he’s hysterical!

Chestnuts roasted by ericnrosesmom @ 09/30/2009 1:11 PM

ericnrosesmom- “Paranormal Activity” is a movie about the haunting of a young couple. They set up video cameras to catch the oddities and, from the reviews I’ve read, terror ensues.

Hey, I don’t know if anyone has mentioned this (I haven’t had time to lurk about), but could someone provide me the link to a blog survey posted one or two Halloweens ago? It was something to the effect of X-Er’s scariest stories. I found scariest places, but I think this one was different.

It’s really starting to feel like fall where I live, and I need scary stories. These ones in particular because there was one story some guy wrote about basically finding a spyglass that let you see ghosts. He said he discovered it in some new England antique story, and when you looked through it, you saw swirling, eel-like creatures everywhere. He thought it was an optical illusion, but after closer inspection found no such device on the spyglass. I don’t care whether or not he made it up, it was a great story and there were dozens of stories equally as good. Anybody?

It is. It is correct. I like that in such wind.

I am eating a toffee apple…. how Haloween is THAT!?

Chestnuts roasted by Steffanio @ 09/30/2009 3:44 PM

AIF – that old blog entry with the scaries is a great one. I managed to find that one a couple months ago and was re-chilled all over again by the great stories. I remember Lemonwitch’s story of being chsed by a lunatic near a lake to be the best one.

It took me a looooot of searching to find it on the site, and I can’t remember the magical comination of words that eventually found it, so good luck. It’s worth the effort, though.

Found it.

Chestnuts roasted by Rhino @ 09/30/2009 4:51 PM

Rockin’! Thanks, Rhino! I’m gonna have to bookmark that sucker.

Chestnuts roasted by tanta07 @ 09/30/2009 5:20 PM

Awesome, thanks for finding that link. The stories in that thread kept me entertained for days. Dare I say better than many books I’ve read.

Speaking of which, has anyone met the Warrens in person. They investigated the Amityville horror and the Haunting in CT (TV version, not the movie….thankfully). I went to their Halloween event once, as well as one of the lesser events where they just showed photos. I think by today’s standards many newer groups with better tech have gotten more evidence, but their stories about the classic cases always fascinated me.

Chestnuts roasted by Dann @ 09/30/2009 7:19 PM

Hey Dann, I think just Mrs. Warren is around. She has been on Paranormal State a few times. They are related to John Zaffis (sp?)the guy who investigated The Haunting In Connecticut.
Not sure why I know all that…

Chestnuts roasted by Bill @ 09/30/2009 8:21 PM

I don’t know if I mentioned this….but some pics I submitted to Awkward Family Photos are going to be published in their book!!!!!!!!!! I don’t get paid except for a free copy of the book. It’s still cool that my late grandparents will live on in immortality on someones book shelf.

PS: since I signed a release form today does that mean that I probably cannot link you guys to the actual pics til the book comes out?

Hey all.

I had a weird couple days. My mom got a tumor taken out yesterday, which collectively scared the crap out of us. She’s fine though. Then the stress of the past few days hit me all at once and everyone in the house felt sick today, finally took a shower at 2:00 and then rolled into work at 2:30, staying till 8. Now i’m home and feeling much better.

Bring on the Ween! I’m totally ready.

Yeah Ed was ill for a few years, so I didn’t get to meet him. Lorraine still seems as active as ever though.
