09/26/2009: Halloween Velvet Treats!

We visited our local Halloween Spirit store tonight, where the strobe lights were a’goin and the overpriced disembodied latex heads were a’flowin. Picked up a few things worth writing about — but we’ll save those for another day.

In the same lot as Spirit was a Rite-Aid, and since pharmacies can be good places to find random seasonal crap, I demanded that our adventure continue.

Now, I’ve been hallo-hunting at this Rite-Aid for years, and I’ve always been certain this particular branch was the most depressing Rite-Aid in Rite-Aid history. I really can’t put my finger on it. It’s a little unorganized, but it isn’t exactly dirty. It’s a little stagnant, but it doesn’t exactly stink. There’s just something about this place that sucks the life out of me, and every time I’ve gone there, my splendid Halloween joy was immediately replaced with this really weird sadness. It doesn’t make for an interesting story to relay on the X-E Blog, but I’m happy to report that the streak is over!

This time, Rite Aid had VELVET TREATS!

Oh man. I sooo don’t have enough gusto to properly define my love and adoration for these wonderful Velvet Treats. Like the legendary Trading Card Treats, they’re another type of those rare “non-candy” items intended to be given out to trick-or-treaters.

We could have a long debate on whether or not costumed kids would enjoy these. I know I would’ve. I absolutely loved getting non-candy items in my treat sack. Money, stickers, worthless plastic doodads…they meant nothing on their own, but they just had this incredible ability to improve the worth of our overall haul.

On the other hand, I never received something called a “Velvet Treat” during my childhood trick-or-treatings. I can picture it now. I would’ve put on a big show, balked at the idea, and maybe even thrown the thing down to the pavement before inviting my masked compatriots to join in my stomps of protest. But I only would’ve done that to save face. On the inside, I’d be really pissed that I blew my chance to go home and color in a velvet Dracula.

No such missed opportunities tonight! Tonight I can color my velvet monsters without fear of sliding down the social ladder! I’ve already hit rockbottom! I wear black socks with sneakers!

For six bucks, you get 18 individually wrapped Velvet Treats, each with a small piece of velvet art and a single marker. For reasons unexplained, the stupid company decided to print the contents of the overall package on each of the individual treat packs: “Contents: 18 Packs of Velvet Art Card and Marker.” Verbatim. Grammatically unsound, and confusing in every which way. That would only make sense if each of the 18 individually wrapped Velvet Treats contained an additional 18 Velvet Treats. And even then, it really wouldn’t.

I wanted to stay true to what an actual trick-or-treater would be dealing with, so I only used a single marker to color in each of the velvet cards. (Each package contains one art card and one marker, remember.) Sad to say, but they definitely didn’t put much of an effort into giving you marker colors that make sense to use with their accompanying art cards. Notice how the card that features nothing but Frankenstein’s head came with a lame lemon yellow? And, if I’m being honest, I swiped the red from another pack to color in the devil guy — he originally came with a blue marker. I don’t know what I want to be for Halloween this year, but it isn’t fucking Andy Warhol.

The technology remains imperfect. The black outlines on the art cards crumble under the pressure of the marker tips, so you have to be especially careful not to scrape off everyone’s facial features as you color. But this is a small price to pay for such gloriously obtuse Halloween art! Check out the small sampling shown above, and note that some of the others were even weirder!

In the upper left, we have Frankenstein’s Monster, now hooded, and with some kind of Inca tattoo across his forehead. At the bottom, we have a spin on a Jekyll/Hyde scenario, which would be almost normal if not for the random crosses nailed to the dude’s wall. And the devil guy is just wacky in general. Velvet Treats are so awesome.

I like them a lot. They’re sort of horrible and few would share my enthusiasm, but they’re definitely something different. If I wasn’t so paranoid about needing to clean egg yolk off of my car on November 1st, I’d totally give these out to trick-or-treaters. They wouldn’t like it, but that’s just because kids are stupid. Maybe these were meant for thirty-year-olds.

*goes back to coloring in his yellow Frankenstein*

EDIT: I was planning to post again today, but I forgot about a family engagement that I must attend. I was flirting with the idea of posting in the late hours, but I’ll likely be full of tequila and not much use to my keyboard. Let’s call this one the SNT. (And also the last day to get your Die-O-Rama entries in. Got a bunch of them over the past 24 hours, and they are insane. I can safely say that it’s going to be very, very difficult to choose the winners.)

If you’re getting the entries, you may have gotten mine about 4 times… oops?

Ghosted by KatLikesPie @ 09/26/2009 5:28 PM EDT

So…
i emailed my box yesterday, but emailed it from my WORK address…
and am now freaking out because I can’t check it to see if matt got my entry.
And now that emails are BOUNCING, i worry i won’t be able to resend.
And also- he’s already probably blitzed at his aunt’s house and won’t be able to check…

So pweeze, matt- Did you get mah entry? Or should I go into a full-blown shitstorm freak-out?

Ghosted by kittymao @ 09/26/2009 5:28 PM EDT

Matt: Everyone always seems to be hung up on the first one (which is good, don’t get me wrong). But I’ve always been partial to the second one. I have a Creepshow poster signed by Romero around here somewhere…

Hi all — I’m about to take off but I do owe many, many people a “got your entry” e-mail. Don’t fret — I’m not posting the winners tomorrow, so if something went wrong, I’ll still be able to get your entry. :) Nobody will have made a diorama for nothing.

I made one, but am not showing you

If there’s no SNT topic, I got one. Scariest experiences. It didn’t have to happen in
October. I got one. Me and my sister were in
a cemetary in Mexico. I heard a story that
Greeks would leave coins on tombstones so
their deceased loved ones could pay for their
passage to the Afterlife. It is said the
ghosts would come out and snatch the money.
I placed the coin and waited. Then, a loud
horn blew, scaring me and my sister. It was my
stepdad playing a prank on us. That was years
ago, and him and my mom are no longer together.

Matt, I went to Walgreens here in my hometown,
sadly no Snoopy Jack O Lanterns. They had
Mickey Mouse and Winnie The Pooh though. I
also heard that Universal Studios has
included Bloody Mary for this year’s Halloween
season.

Matt

If you’re looking for something to do that Halloween, we have a Haunted House on the Island this year.

Little Debbies Fall fare has finally hit the Island. Local supermarkets ar enow carrying Pumkin Delights and Football Brownies. I know they typically offer other fall products but it’s a good beggining.

Also the stores are already sold out of Boo Berry for the moment, hopefully they’ll be restocked for October.

The link above is to the scariest moment of my life.
Not really ghost related.

Lonestar I have a good one that just happened a couple nights ago. I went to the grocery store about 9:00 in the evening and when I got back my hubby had already gone to beg so the downstairs was totally dark. I’m walking up the porch steps with my hands full of grocery bags when this stupid stray black cat came running out of the shadows at me. I’m not sure who was more scared, me or it, but we both screamed!

Ghosted by ericnrosesmom @ 09/26/2009 8:12 PM EDT

This is also my first SNT! Pretty cool.

Ghosted by kittymao @ 09/26/2009 8:15 PM EDT

Happy SNT ya’ll. :) Wonderful, Glorious, Awesome Fall is in full swing at last! Well, in my neck of the woods anyway.
I wish those of you experiencing hot weather weren’t. Hopefully by the time Oct. comes around ya’ll will finally have cool temps. As for my scariest story, I’ll get back to ya on that one. Once again Happy SNT.

Ah is any other procrastinators able to send in their entries? Mine is getting bounced back :(

Ghosted by ZeroIha @ 09/26/2009 8:46 PM EDT

matt said earlier that some of the bounced messages are ACTUALLY getting through. So hold out and see if it got in.

Ghosted by kittymao @ 09/26/2009 8:56 PM EDT

Well, I’m gonna go watch the “Children of the Corn” remake on Syfy. I’ve actually never seen any of them before. I’ll come back later to tell you if I liked it.

Ghosted by KING JLA @ 09/26/2009 8:58 PM EDT

Whew okay, I hope it went thrugh!

Couldn’t get much more fall here in Southern New Jersey, 60 degrees and a steady rain. Spent the morning running to yard sales and the afternoon at work (I wasn’t supposed to work today, but they called me in and I need the money).

Spookiest thing that ever happened to me? I was 16 and babysitting in one of the oldest houses in Cape May County. It was a dark, bitterly cold night in February, right after a snowstorm had hit the area. After tucking the kids into bed, I watched the 1964 horror film “Hush, Hush Sweet Charlotte” with Bette Davis and Olivia DeHaviland. Between the screeching grand dames, the creaky house, and the windy weather, I didn’t have great dreams that night.

In the end, my imagination just ran away with me. The kids and their parents were fine in the morning. By the time the parents drove me home, the wind had diminished and the snow was melting. Even so, I haven’t watched a horror movie alone since!

Ghosted by starwenn @ 09/26/2009 9:06 PM EDT

Ohh, since it was kind of cheatey that I sent a link and it was more scary than spooky, I’ll tell y’all another story.

I went to college in San Francisco. My major’s building was on Powell and was built in 1904. It wasn’t turned into School property until 1924…it was origninally a Gentlemen’s club- proper language for a whorehouse.

The whole building had this vibe- It gave me the kind of willies that make you grit your teeth and your hairs stand on end if you were alone. You always felt watched.

The basement Was downright awful. We had gallery classes there, and there were three rooms. The basement was where where the Burlesque stages were, and the boiler room was.

The boiler room, I have never actually been in. One foot in- and I broke down crying. That place was awful. I am thouroughly convinced something brutal happened down there… something not pleasant to women, and perhaps very corrupt.

My friend Jason tried to push me in once, and I clawed the crap out of his arm.

Ghosted by kittymao @ 09/26/2009 9:09 PM EDT

I’m an idiot…what’s SNT?

And I’m glad Matt liked coloring in the cards. I’m twenty-seven and one of my guilty pleasures is doing velvet art posters. Really therapy is expensive, velvet art is cheap. You decide.

Kittymao= Can you give me the name of the college you went to please? I might be able to find out it’s
history. I like reading about old haunted buildings.

Matt, Disneyland in California has received a gift from Hong Kong Disneyland. For the Halloween season, Space
Mountain will be transformed into Space Mountain: Ghost
Galaxy. Basically, Space Mountain gets possessed by a
dark being from anothther galaxy. YouTube has some
videos of the original ride in HKDL. Unfortunately, the
videos are dark, then again, it is too dark to film in
the mountains. From what I’ve heard, it’s good.

Thank you Cheetara, I have not laughed that hard in a very long time. I am crying.

I too hate Trivium and enjoy mangling lyrics to a variety of bands.
I have made up lyrics to Dead or Alive by Bon Jovi, thanks to the magic of the EASY setting on Rock Band.

LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOOONE STAR!
sorry, Spaceballs made me do it.

I went to the Academy of Art College.
If it helps, the address is 540 Powell.

Steffanio – thanks for posting those pictures, my wife and I are going to Disneyworld and Universal Studios on the 30 and 31st for our honeymoon and crazily looking forward to seeing the parks all decked out.

Plus, it finally dropped to autumn type temperatures today and it’s supposed to rain again so that ol’ Halloween feeling is really kicking in.

I reckon this is my first SNT as well! I went apple picking today so Fall is officially in full effect!

I can’t wait to see everyone’s Die-O-Ramas!

Ghosted by Starsmudge @ 09/26/2009 10:30 PM EDT

I know none of you know me but I’m jumping in anyway.

My scariest moment was when I was in about 4th grade and my sister had gotten Jurassic Park for Xmas, and convinced me to watch it with her after our parents went to bed. In the dark. At midnight… and when the goat leg hit the window on the screen, that very second, my cat started banging on the window to get inside right behind my head. I screamed, woke everyone up, and am sure to this day that I took about 5 years of my life.

Ghosted by KatLikesPie @ 09/26/2009 10:44 PM EDT

Cheetara, that was awesome. I cried I was laughing so hard.
But Neg might not like the emo hit. :(

A friend gave me a link to a news reporter going “ghetto”… and I found this as a related clip.

Kmao, I dated a news anchor for a couple of years and they really do cut up. It’s so stressful they have to. It’s amazing how they can do so many things at once.

Hmmmm…Scariest?

Tie between getting driven off a steep grade on a mountain or when that A**hole slipped me GHB and ruined New Years 2004 for me.

So, this IS the SNT, right?

KB= If you want it to be, then yes. We’re also talking about the Literal videos seen on YouTube. I just saw
the Total Eclipse of The Heart and Losing My Religion
Literal Videos.

Kittymao= Thanks. I’ll see what I can find out.

I liked the Children of the Corn remake, even though the first hour plays like a relationship drama instead of a horror film. Yea, it was cheesy, but it was a fun cheesy.

Ghosted by KING JLA @ 09/26/2009 11:30 PM EDT

BTW, new SNL is finally on! Sure, there were too Thursday episodes already, but they really don’t count.

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 09/26/2009 11:35 PM EDT

I thought the remake of Children of the Corn sucked.. Annoying nagging wife that I had no sympathy for, really abrupt ending.. child porn scene.. Blah.

I’m going to watch better horror. Scream’s on one of the Showtimes, and on HBO or Showtime West Rob Zombie’s Halloween is on after that..

Ghosted by Cat the Vampire Slayer @ 09/26/2009 11:46 PM EDT

Way late on this, but Disney World gets into the Halloween spirit in August because their Not So Scary Parties start as September rolls around. Going in two weeks, always fun. A bag overloaded with free candy if you’re adult enough to go trick or treat, Mickey in a costume and a cool parade. Worth it to me (but I also have an annual pass, so I’m not restricted to 4 p.m. to midnight to enjoy the park all day either).

Happy SNT!

Ghosted by Andy @ 09/26/2009 11:52 PM EDT

Hey another SNT, woo hoo. I’m starting to decorate for Halloween. I got the coolest light-up pumpkin that’s black with hot pink insides at Wal-Mart as well as a hot pink pumpkin lawn bag. Hit up the Dollar Tree for odds and ends. Also Garfield branded candy corn makes me smile.
