Blood Bag: The Candy!

Ah, finally got a nice little batch of Spooky Die-O-Rama entries stockpiled. Some really good ones in there! As a reminder, you have until Saturday night to get your finished entries in. (Well, a picture of your finished entry. Or a link to a picture of your finished entry. You know what I'm saying.) It's still anyone's ball game, so why miss out on your chance to win this lovely item? Get with it. Find a shoebox. Thank you.

Gotta say, it's been a pretty good Halloween season so far. And by this I mean, it hasn't even felt Halloweeny yet, so I haven't had a chance to make the usual mistake of blowing my spooky wad in September. I've been researching local and semi-local haunts for random weekend trips, and even if none of them come to fruition, it sure is fun trudging through ten-year-old Flash splash pages to read about all of the pumpkin patches, hayrides and haunted houses that I may or may not see. If nothing else, such sites make for wonderful depositories of shitty Halloween clipart from 1996.

In the end, the Halloween season is mainly enjoyed during the four weekends of October. That's four chances to make the most of it. Do you have anything planned? Discuss in the comments.

I have to finish some real work before I can properly rededicate myself to fake work, so while I wrap things up, here's a quickie about a disturbing and life-altering Halloween candy:

It's the amazing Blood Bag, filled with "liquid cherry candy!" Yes! Over the past few years, I've been overjoyed to see blood bags evolve into a common sight during the Halloween season, but usually, they're just for decorative purposes. Not this one! This is a blood bag with edible blood!

The production value is pretty high. The bag is large and made of quality plastic, complete with the requisite "novelty blood type" label. They spared no expense to make the candy inside really look like blood, too. The stuff is deep and viscous, arriving in just the right shade of burgundy to make you think twice before eating it. Pfft, like anyone could resist.

Snip the tip and suck it down, but be warned, this cherry blood stuff is STRONG. Envision the concentrated syrup used to create a cherry Slush Puppie -- that's exactly what this is. Concentrated cherry-flavored liquid sugar, and there's enough to it to probably kill the poor soul who cannot resist the temptation to finish his or her blood bag in one sitting.

The Blood Bags aren't new. A quick search of the site confirms that many of you were speaking highly of them last year. And actually, I've received at least 3 or 4 e-mails about 'em this year. They've acquired a pretty serious following, all things considered, and it's easy to see why. Wait, no it isn't. I need something else to put after that comma. Something safe.

"They've acquired a pretty serious following, all things considered, and I'm happy to count myself among the Blood Bag's many acolytes." There, that works. Writing stuff is hard.

The uninitiated may be turned off by the 2.29 price tag, but they really shouldn't be. Firstly, 2.29 is an awesome price. There is nothing else on this planet with a retail price of exactly 2.29. Secondly, this isn't a one-off candy. There's enough edible blood in the bag to last you for a few weeks, assuming that you aren't some kind of pig addict who refuses to conserve.

Thumbs up from me!

PS: "Thumbs up" makes for an interesting Google Image Search.

So I’ve been searching for the Dots… and I can’t find them at Stop and Shop OR CVS… I think I’m going to trek to target tomorrow..

All this talk about slush puppy type drinks reminds me of a story. When I was about 15-16 I would ride my bike up to the 7-11 and get a slurpee anytime I could during that particular summer. One night I went and sometimes I am not paying attention as much as I should and I filled the cup up with syrup because the machine wasn’t on and the clerk asked if I really wanted it that way and suggested I dumped it out and they turned on the machine. I said oh no I am fine and bought it that way. After I took a few really big gulps of it I noticed what they meant and dumped most of it disappointed with myself. My own personal slurpee ‘taps temple’ machine isn’t on all the time either.

We don’t have a walgreens in town so I would probably not see these. I don’t think my best friend would go for driving to one for me to check out blood bags with liquid candy in it. This reminds me of a candy that I had once in high school it was designed like liquid deodorant where you click up and it oozes out but it had a rich flavor. I really liked it and ate it in one sitting. The flavor I had was grape and I don’t normally like grape. If they don’t make those anymore they should bring it back. Also I should get one of those sweettart tube candies those r good.

Man, after months of inactivity, it’s getting hard for me to keep up with all these posts! Another great one!

Hey Cat,

I’ve seen the big boxes of Halloween DOTS at target. They were in baskets at the end of an aisle near the food not near the halloween stuff. Also today at Walgreens i saw both the big boxes and the bags of little boxes.
Happy Hunting

Halloween plans…. I’m still making plans, and it’s probably going to wind up involving movies and lots of them. And candy. And perhaps a haunted house. It’s a work in progress.

Wow. X-E’s Halloween Countdown and CineMassacre’s Monster Madness. What a great month!!!

Only halloween plans I have so far involve finally throwing a get-together at my house for friends. Will do that the day before on Friday. Trying to decide what random movie to have playing and bothering people. On Halloween night, my wife is having her first concert with her new band, so I will be doing photo duties.

Chestnuts roasted by Dann @ 09/25/2009 9:03 AM

Cat: I have also picked some up at Target. Same way as Ryan said at the end of the isle in baskets.

Matt: I saw the blood bags for the first time last weekend. I haven’t opened it though..I’m thinking of a way to use it in our decorations. Very cool stuff!

Blockhead script review
Premise: Blockhead explores what it would it be like if the real-world Peanuts Gang grew up and lived together in New York City.

Chestnuts roasted by Ya @ 09/25/2009 9:14 AM

Oh!And for the party I will be playing the Halloween jukebox for my party…so it’s kinda like Matt will be the DJ.

Chestnuts roasted by Jason @ 09/25/2009 9:15 AM

I think I might pick up a couple of those to give out to the most oustanding trick-or-treaters. You know, the ones that actually show up with an interesting costume they put a lot of effort into. They’ll get a special treat this year beyond me going, “Wow, cool costume!”

I could never eat one of those myself, though. Not that I don’t like candy, but I am ashamed of the visual of a grown man sucking on a bag of liquid candy. I’d have to go hide under the stairs to do it or something.

Chestnuts roasted by tanta07 @ 09/25/2009 9:30 AM

My daughter was born last Halloween, so technically this is her first, and I plan to get an early start with nurturing her appreciation of this holiday. We’re doing pumpkin patches and pumpkin festivals and pumpkin cookies and I will be drinking Screamin’ Pumpkin beer while carving many pumpkins. Pumpkin.

As for the “drinking syrup” thing – at one time there was a drink called “Burples.” They came in a scrunched up, accordian style container, and the gag was you would expand the container (about a quarter full with syrup)and fill the rest with water to get some sort of kool-aid like concoction. When I bought my first one, I didn’t realize this, and uncrewed the cap and took a long, hardy drink of straight syrup. I’m amazed I didn’t get diabetes on the spot.

I DID IT!
I finished my die-o-rama!

now, to submit it.

I’m helping in a haunted forest this October. This is the first year that I am actually sponsoring and planning one of the scenes. It always been pretty creepy with some years being more scary than others. Multiple groups get to dress a scene any way they want so there isn’t necessarily a theme through the whole thing. We’re doing a zombie/evil dead/voodoo witch conglomeration and we’ve had some great ideas. It’s all about mood and distraction – creeping someone out then getting them from where they weren’t expecting it.

Chestnuts roasted by freudguy @ 09/25/2009 1:05 PM

Isn’t that candy blood the same mixture they use for movies?

Chestnuts roasted by Short Red Snaggletooth @ 09/25/2009 1:41 PM

Ragnarok, I am SO jealous of the people who are getting their drakes after Brewfest…I switched mains just after Halloween last year so I still have to do all the Halloween stuff on my druid. I never even got the Halloween title that I wanted so badly on my original main (my rogue) because the stupid Squashling pet never dropped…/cry. But grats to you on Saturday! :)

Starsmudge, yes I live a half hour north of Syracuse. Isn’t it great being a female WoW player? That is, I’m going to assume you’re a girl because you dressed up as Jem, but feel free to correct me if I’m wrong. Which is awesome, by the way…I’ve often wanted to dress up as her but I’m not very crafty when it comes to sewing and I’d definitely want to handmake my costume.

Talia does have a point, guys…this is probably pretty darn close to movie blood. Good idea to just buy the stuff and use it in your Halloween festivities. Plus, you can totally gross everyone out by eating it. Would be great for a zombie scene.

Chestnuts roasted by Nicole @ 09/25/2009 1:53 PM

You know what else would be great for a zombie scene?

ME. I WOULD.

It has been my dream forever to be an extra in a zombie movie. I would totally crunch skulls and suck down brains and dribble blood. This is all I really want in life. I can lurch, shuffle, AND plod! No running zombies please. F running zombies right in their wound holes. I am a purist through and through.

Chestnuts roasted by Rev. Back It On Up 13 @ 09/25/2009 2:03 PM

Rev, the best college professor I ever had was actually a zombie extra in the 90s remake of Night of the Living Dead. He brought in the tape for class one day and told us he was going to show us the best moment in cinematic history. We of course had no clue what was coming. He fires up the ol’ VCR and we see a pan shot of the zombie mayhem outside the house, with our trusty professor-zombie slapping another zombie’s ass with a severed hand. I never laughed so hard in my life.

I miss school…

All wells I ate the sugar, we put that on the pan, that did the meal of tasting whose own is large. As for in order me the sugar of the pan for something which taste does exactly to be good, there was the ham presumption which is large to the perm, but that you thought.

Furthermore assuming, that thing of a certain specification which with someone is possible in thing it has met whether or not because of me you thought that the fact that we know is desired. Without doing at all, way two times it is really returned with appropriate place this, for me being able to eat the large food, that it needs, is. In regard to me because that had with respect to trouble, you do not think. We think that we want the sandwich.

Chestnuts roasted by Yuan Jing @ 09/25/2009 3:01 PM

Yuan Jing returns! Did you eat the ham sandwich? Hammer pot pie can be delicious on a Tuesday, but only before the boys go outside to play. Freddy and Jason make excellent guests.

Chestnuts roasted by Barry @ 09/25/2009 3:08 PM

Ham Presumption is a modern social plague. Don’t be a victim.

Sometimes a slab of something pink and shiny is as innocuous a thing as ham. Other times, well, you don’t want to think about it Yuan Jing.

Next time you are lustfully staring at that New York deli sandwich, think twice before tucking your teeth into that shiny, glossy sheet of so-called “ham”. Your immortal soul is at stake.

Eat the large food indeed. At your own peril.

Chestnuts roasted by Rev. Back It On Up 13 @ 09/25/2009 3:21 PM

I am so sorry Yuan Jing – I should have said the previous message in a way you can understand. Do over:

Suspecting ham is a modern social plague. Are no victim. Sometimes a flat wafer of something pink and brilliance is also inoffensively a thing then ham. D’ other time, well, wants you that the yuan Jing do not think. Next time look at you voluptuous two time fixement these sandwich to grocer of New York, think before remplier your cogs in that, do freeze booklet of so-called „ham shine. Your immortal soul stands on the game. Eat of large food. TO your own danger.
