Blood Bag: The Candy!

Ah, finally got a nice little batch of Spooky Die-O-Rama entries stockpiled. Some really good ones in there! As a reminder, you have until Saturday night to get your finished entries in. (Well, a picture of your finished entry. Or a link to a picture of your finished entry. You know what I'm saying.) It's still anyone's ball game, so why miss out on your chance to win this lovely item? Get with it. Find a shoebox. Thank you.

Gotta say, it's been a pretty good Halloween season so far. And by this I mean, it hasn't even felt Halloweeny yet, so I haven't had a chance to make the usual mistake of blowing my spooky wad in September. I've been researching local and semi-local haunts for random weekend trips, and even if none of them come to fruition, it sure is fun trudging through ten-year-old Flash splash pages to read about all of the pumpkin patches, hayrides and haunted houses that I may or may not see. If nothing else, such sites make for wonderful depositories of shitty Halloween clipart from 1996.

In the end, the Halloween season is mainly enjoyed during the four weekends of October. That's four chances to make the most of it. Do you have anything planned? Discuss in the comments.

I have to finish some real work before I can properly rededicate myself to fake work, so while I wrap things up, here's a quickie about a disturbing and life-altering Halloween candy:

It's the amazing Blood Bag, filled with "liquid cherry candy!" Yes! Over the past few years, I've been overjoyed to see blood bags evolve into a common sight during the Halloween season, but usually, they're just for decorative purposes. Not this one! This is a blood bag with edible blood!

The production value is pretty high. The bag is large and made of quality plastic, complete with the requisite "novelty blood type" label. They spared no expense to make the candy inside really look like blood, too. The stuff is deep and viscous, arriving in just the right shade of burgundy to make you think twice before eating it. Pfft, like anyone could resist.

Snip the tip and suck it down, but be warned, this cherry blood stuff is STRONG. Envision the concentrated syrup used to create a cherry Slush Puppie -- that's exactly what this is. Concentrated cherry-flavored liquid sugar, and there's enough to it to probably kill the poor soul who cannot resist the temptation to finish his or her blood bag in one sitting.

The Blood Bags aren't new. A quick search of the site confirms that many of you were speaking highly of them last year. And actually, I've received at least 3 or 4 e-mails about 'em this year. They've acquired a pretty serious following, all things considered, and it's easy to see why. Wait, no it isn't. I need something else to put after that comma. Something safe.

"They've acquired a pretty serious following, all things considered, and I'm happy to count myself among the Blood Bag's many acolytes." There, that works. Writing stuff is hard.

The uninitiated may be turned off by the 2.29 price tag, but they really shouldn't be. Firstly, 2.29 is an awesome price. There is nothing else on this planet with a retail price of exactly 2.29. Secondly, this isn't a one-off candy. There's enough edible blood in the bag to last you for a few weeks, assuming that you aren't some kind of pig addict who refuses to conserve.

Thumbs up from me!

PS: "Thumbs up" makes for an interesting Google Image Search.

Wow! That thing is awesome. I wonder if I can find one around my town. Nice find!

This seems like it could be awesome to have, but then I’d personally get tired of that much cherry candy. I don’t think I could finish one, even if I didn’t do it in one sitting.

They have similar blood bags at the Dollar Tree stores, so those looking for budget blood could go there.

It would be interesting to use this in conjunction with a Snoopy Snow Cone Maker.

I saw and fondled one of these things last night when I was on my Halloween run at Walgreens. I thought about picking it up and reviewing it for my blog, but I’m glad Matt saved me the trouble. I think I might still end up with one, but only for decoration. I can’t imagine trying to eat that much cherry syrupy stuff, even in moderation.

Haha. You really can’t resist candy blood.

Just bought some Count Chocula, Franken Berry, and Boo Berry for 1.99 a box at Albertson’s. Going to go back later today and buy the rest! =)

I gotta go find one of these.
Not to buy, mind you, just to oogle and squeeze the bag in the store.

I’ve always had a bit of an aversion to “liquid candy.”
I don’t know why.
I think because my brain sees thick, red, ingestible liquid and immediately flashes back to being forced to take liquid cold medicine when I was sick back in the days before tolerable flavors like grape and citrus came along.

I think that stuff would make me puke. Red cherry puke. But, it is a definitely awesome item that I would have wanted as a kid. And it would make a great decoration.

My October Halloween plans are pretty loose at this point. The New York State Fairgrounds has a Fright Fest at the Fair thing that they do, so I’d like to try to go to that because I’ve never been. I’m going to be spending Halloween weekend with my best friend and his fiancee. We got together last year and watched tons of scary movies and carved pumpkins, so I expect more of the same this year. His fiancee suggested we go to a pumpkin patch to get our pumpkins this year, so I’m sure we’ll do that.

And of course, (/nerd on) there is the epic World of Warcraft Halloween festivities in October. Halloween is my favorite WoW event and (if all goes according to plan) when it’s over, I’ll have my 310% flight speed Violet Drake mount! WOO! Which also means 310% in my druid bird form. Mwahahaha. /nerd off

Okay… so, Halloween Plans.

As Always, the Monstrous Halloween Party at our place- On the 30th, to leave Halloween open for Bar Hopping in SCZ. We’re even having family from Washington State come to the bash.
This year Rudy is going to be Dr. Doom, and I get to help him! I’m going to be Coraline.

Rudy and I are also thinking of going on the Haunted San Mission tour in SJB. It will take us around the town to see the haunted areas. I’m excited and spooked- because seeing a ghost will force me to rethink my stance on religion.

We usually wind up going to the Corn Maze, becuase my BIL works there. It’s fun, but annoying. It’s also, however, become a tradition.

Thanks for reviewing this as I did not have the guts to try it.

1oth again!?!?!?

Those look awesome… but I think it’d be a sugar OD for me. Too much liquid sugar tends to just start to taste nasty. Granted, you don’t HAVE to eat it all at once… but when you have a pack of candy you HAVE to eat it all at once, right?

Chestnuts roasted by Andy @ 09/24/2009 5:20 PM

Ahhh, Freddy’s Greatest Hits is coming!

Chestnuts roasted by drew do @ 09/24/2009 5:22 PM

That stuff looks super gross. I’ll stick to candy corn.

Wow, I’ve not has a Slush Puppie in so long. There’s a gas station in my town that still lets you work the machine yourself, even adding as much flavoring as you want. All the other places around here have placed the machines behind the counter in a depressing nod to modern times and the economy. It seems it’s time for a trip.

@Nicole: I just need to finish up Brewfest; should be Saturday I get my Violet Proto Drake. I’m so stoked. :D

Wow, these look awesome. I can imagine consuming it in one session and the stomach pains afterwards.

Chestnuts roasted by Kapprika @ 09/24/2009 5:42 PM

AHHHH!!! I almost got that at Walgreen’s yesterday and I was like “Nah, I’ll wait till Matt finds it.” Plus I didn’t have cash!!! What a COOL surprise to have predicted a post only a DAY in advance!

Chestnuts roasted by Mike B @ 09/24/2009 5:48 PM

Out of all those thumb’s up pictures on the first page, I would have to go with the one punched through the wall, and Vault boy.

Chestnuts roasted by Burninfresh @ 09/24/2009 5:56 PM

kittymao: Awesome costume idea! I saw some adorable Coralines running around Dragon*Con this year. One even had an Other Mother with her:)

Halloween plans so far include the traditional pumpkin carving and watching It’s The Great Pumpkin, Charlie Brown. As for the party side of the holiday, it’s either find a local party or drive to Atlanta.

Pros of Staying Local: cheaper
Pros of Going to Atlanta: far superior bars/clubs/spooky events, plus my best friend of 15+ years, who is the best bad influence ever

Hmm… something tells me I’ll end up in Atlanta.

I’ve tried to send my contest entry three times from two different computers and from two different email accounts. I think the third time was the charm though… I hope. :(

I kind of want to inject that blood candy directly into my veins. Hopefully it’d result in the best sugar high ever.

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Poop @ 09/24/2009 6:03 PM

Well, I came up with the idea while drunk a day after I saw the movie. That blue hair mesmerized me. Can’t decide if I’m gonna dye my hair blue, or get that colored pomade.
No wigs fer me.

Chestnuts roasted by kittymao @ 09/24/2009 6:05 PM

I’ve seen this candy before. I’ll pick some up .
So far my Halloween plans include all the traditonal stuff. Watchin specials, horror flick marathons and Jack-O-Lantern carving etc. Might go to Kings Island Halloween event this year. It seems like it ‘ll be REALLY FUN!!!

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 09/24/2009 6:09 PM

Oh man, Freddy’s greatest hits is amazingly, wonderfully bad.

Chestnuts roasted by zharicant @ 09/24/2009 6:09 PM

The Blood Bags were new to me when I found them this year. Awesome, aren’t they? The next best thing is the king-sized gummi worm and centipede. I use the singular form because there’s only one of them in each package. They’re THAT big.

Chestnuts roasted by TB Tabby @ 09/24/2009 6:26 PM

TB Tabby: The giant gummi centipede and worm are awesome.
Tasty too.

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 09/24/2009 6:44 PM

As far as festivities, I’m sure I’ll hit up all the haunted houses in my area, there will probably be a movie marathon or two in there, and maybe I’ll do the zombie walk that happens around here every year. A bunch of folks get all dolled up like zombies and shamble from one side of town to the other and stop at a few bars along the way.
