09/22/2009: The Snoopy-O’-Lantern?

Narrowly avoiding death for cluttering our apartment with a seven foot Jason Voorhees statue, I return to you while something much, much cuter: A Snoopy-O’-Lantern!

It appears as though licensing rights for Peanuts-related tomfoolery can be purchased for a buck fifty and a compliment, because there are a lot of junky companies making a lot of junky Peanuts stuff. Ten-page activity books, cheap window clings, you name it.

But in that sea of Snoopy shit, there are plenty of treasures — like this one. From East West Distributing, it’s the official “Light-Up Snoopy,” or in more descriptive terms, the official “Light-Up Pumpkin Shaped Like Snoopy’s Head.”

Innocuous and adorable, it’s easy to overlook the sheer insanity of this thirteen-dollar decoration. How a product that could only be described as a “light-up pumpkin shaped like Snoopy’s head” got off the drawing board, into pitch meetings and ultimately into mass production is probably worthy of a documentary in of itself, but for those of us who like to keep things simple: Yay, it’s a Snoopy-O’-Lantern!

I found this at Walgreens, where it was kept on one of the top shelves. You know the kind. They’re sort of within reach, but not exactly, so you really have to appreciate the item if you’re going to go through the trouble of doing the damned fool tippy-toe dance to get it down. Snoopy should be proud; I don’t make such concessions for just any pumpkin-shaped-like-somebody’s-head.

Once you plug Snoopy in, a small bulb on the inside beams light to the outside, enveloping the plastic head with a spooky and subtle glow. I love it. It’s so lo-fi. It’s a brand new item, but it feels like something that could’ve been sold 25-30 years ago, totally unchanged. No overblown gimmicks, no major theatrics — just a sweet little Halloween nite-lite that just happens to look like a pumpkin version of Snoopy’s disembodied head.

Ten bucks would’ve been a fairer price for what amounts to a hunk of low-grade plastic with a Christmas light inside, but in a world filled with so many awesome things to complain about, griping about paying three dollars too much for a light-up head just seems frivolous.

Oh, and if you can’t rally behind Snoopy, note that Walgreens was also selling Mickey Mouse versions of this, too. There may have been other Disney characters as well, but I had Snoopy tunnel vision and wasn’t paying attention to anything else. Besides, Disney characters get to enjoy relevance all year. Let the dog have his holiday seasons.

Sweet pumpkin! I like it. :)

YAY NUMBER TWO! I’m glad you’re still with us Matt. And licensed pumpkins rub me the wrong way.

Ghosted by PlantMonster @ 09/22/2009 6:16 PM EDT

Matt are you keeping molten lava inside you cabinets?

Ghosted by Neg @ 09/22/2009 6:24 PM EDT

This reminds me of a jack-o-lantern lamp I bought a couple of years ago. It’s sitting in a box or on a shelf back at my house.

Ghosted by Hoverbored @ 09/22/2009 6:29 PM EDT

Neg, it’s a fake fireplace. Lame, I know, but we got a good deal on it, and I like fire.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/22/2009 6:30 PM EDT

It’s nice to know that the woman didn’t kill you last night.

That is one cute lantern. I say put a green bulb in, paint him brown, and he could be the funny dog Green Lantern who’s name totally escapes me right now.

Thanks for putting up the Freddy Album. The version of “All I have to do is dream” is one of the better ones I’ve heard.

Ah, we’ve got one of those, Matt. It’s going to the curb, since we’re cleaning everything out.

Ghosted by Neg @ 09/22/2009 6:40 PM EDT

Ahh, nice to come to my dorm after a ****ing long day of labs and classes, and just sit back and read about a snoopy pumpkin.

Perfect.

Beautiful. Simple.

Thanks Matt =D

Aggh, that was me. Not that I’m known here or anything! Hmm.

Anywho, if Nintendo made Halloween lanterns I’d be all over them =O

10th!!!!1!!

My girl would love that thing. I may need to get it now.

I believe that I will make the trek to Walgreen’s and make this the first thing I get to re-start my Halloween decoration collection. There is just something about cheap hunks of plastic lit by dim little bulbs that makes me happy.

This ranks pretty high on my list of “things I never thought I would see.”

I mean, who is the genius who thought up this product?

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 09/22/2009 6:57 PM EDT

If that was big enough I would wear it. Or is it?

Ghosted by Bill @ 09/22/2009 7:05 PM EDT

I always wondered what those looked like plugged in since I have stare at them all day. It’s not that I’m a creep…I just work at a Walgreens. Although the two are not mutually exclusive.

An original idea for sure, but a step down from the Vorhees statue.

So I fired up the trusty Wii today for the first time in a while. It seems that the web browser was made free sometime in the last few months. I’m now happily X-Eing from the comfort of my own bed.
But it’s really hard to type.

Ghosted by OrbitalVelocity @ 09/22/2009 7:27 PM EDT

He’s alive! Nice to know you weren’t murdered by your gf or Freddy. I also love Snoopy things. In the 80’s, Charlie Brown and Snoopy seemed a much bigger deal. When I was 7, I had a Snoopy Cool Joe shirt and it’s no wonder my chest has no burn-in from wearing that thing so much. Long live Snoopy!

Ghosted by Lex @ 09/22/2009 7:41 PM EDT

The wii web browser was free from day 1…

Ghosted by Neg @ 09/22/2009 7:45 PM EDT

The dog-face green lantern was named G’nort.

Ghosted by Boingophile @ 09/22/2009 7:57 PM EDT

I didn’t get a chance to comment last night, the life sized Jason is awesome, good purchase. To me that purchase pretty much solidifies the fact that you can pretty much buy any Halloween decoration, since monetarily, there is no investment of equal value short of buying a corn field and constructing a maze.

Ghosted by Fox @ 09/22/2009 7:58 PM EDT

Today the leaves started to change, and I could actually feel the cold brisk autumn air – about five minutes ago I realized it was the Equinox. Funny how things work. Glad to be here reading about a snoopy lantern on a cool fall evening. I need to make some of Matt’s famous pumpkin cider and slap on a horror movie.

Ghosted by Ford @ 09/22/2009 8:32 PM EDT

Neg, the web browser was free for a while, but then they raised the price to 500 WiiPoints. Now it’s free again.

Ghosted by OrbitalVelocity @ 09/22/2009 8:37 PM EDT

oh I like snoopy! thats neat!

I found Archer Farms pumpkin pie yogurt today at target. Also I picked up the Apple Cider flavor too. There’s a caramel apple one that I am leery about however.

43 cents on sale is a great find and the Pumpkin flavor is decent. Waiting to try the cider one tomorrow.

Gonna buy a few more tomorrow and freeze them to see how they work as a frozen yogurt type of thing.

Waiting for the hubby to come back with Dominos. Trying the Mediterranean vegetable sandwich tonight.

Also …. I found this neat thing I want to go to on December 22nd at BB Kings in NYC

A John Waters Christmas carol! woo! It’s John Waters doing a one man show about Christmas and stuff….sounds hilarious.

Matt, I can’t tell you how happy I am that you’re updating so frequently for Halloween. For the love of all that is ghoulish, PLEASE KEEP UP THE GOOD WORK! X-E’s Halloween Countdown is one of my annual Halloween staples.

Snoopy-o-Lantern, if only I were free around Halloween, and had time to invite people over, lol!

Ghosted by Tresjolie9 @ 09/22/2009 9:00 PM EDT

OrbitalVelocity, the Wii Web Browser supports USB keyboards, although you might have to download a system update if you haven’t done so in a while.

Ghosted by Hoverbored @ 09/22/2009 9:02 PM EDT

Walgreens has some great stuff this year, including the scariest/greatest Jack in the Box of all time. You can check it out here
http://blogs.myspace.com/index.cfm?fuseaction=blog.view&friendId=15599433&blogId=511188861

Teddy Ray recommended I share it with everyone here.

snoopy’s cool. growing up, the neighbors had a snoopy-shaped wire of christmas lights that they put on the side of their house. It was huge. It wasn’t branded, and maybe they made it themselves. We used to love driving past “the snoopy house”. trick or treating at a snoopy house would have been cool.

Oh Nintendo, if I didn’t need you for Zelda and Pokemon, I’d disown you forever~

Ghosted by Neg @ 09/22/2009 9:10 PM EDT

Thanks Boing. I new his name began with GN.

Ghosted by KING JLA @ 09/22/2009 9:14 PM EDT

Every post gets better this countdown…

Pure awesomeness!

So glad you went with Snoop instead of Disney.

Ghosted by Burninfresh @ 09/22/2009 9:25 PM EDT

mandy_Reeves,
There’s an official John Waters Christmas album that was released a few years ago you should definitely check out. It features rare and screwy yuletide ditties like “Santa Claus is a Black Man”, “Here Comes Fatty Claus”, and others. It’s definitely worth a listen, especially if you’re a fan of Waters and his unique sense of aesthetics.

Speaking of BB Kings, I think that the Misfits will be performing there on Halloween night. Ought to be a hell of a show.

Thanks for the tip, Hoverbored. Works like a charm.

Ghosted by OrbitalVelocity @ 09/22/2009 9:47 PM EDT

Oh, John Show, whoever you are, thank you sooo much!!! I saw that thing at Walgreens, but I was on my lunch hour and stopped turning the crank when the voices started in…I’m both afraid of it and want to buy it so bad.

Ghosted by Amy @ 09/22/2009 10:07 PM EDT

OMG that jack in the box is amazing! Will have to see if I can get one shipped over :-(

You certainly couldn’t tell that today was the Equinox here in SoCal. Today topped out at 104 degrees, and tomorrow is supposed to be 106. It’s a dry heat, fonrtunately.

I don’t know if anyone else watches The Jay Leno show, but I just came across PEE-WEE HERMAN!!! Sure, Paul Reubens aged a bit, but Pee-wee himself is exactly the same!

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 09/22/2009 10:33 PM EDT

I’d much prefer to see him as himself.

Ghosted by Neg @ 09/22/2009 10:43 PM EDT

Aw geez, and I was just at Walgreens the other day, too! I guess I was too involved with looking for WebKinz to notice pumpkins shaped like Micky and Snoopy. Not that I’d buy it – I have plenty of Halloween junk – but it’s still cool to know it’s out there.

Ghosted by starwenn @ 09/22/2009 10:51 PM EDT

Invader Norbert

Paul Reubens was on Pushing Daisies and still looked good, and did an excellent job playing creepy.

Matt–
So, how did your girl friend react to her new room mate? Does jason get to sleep at the edge the bed? Or does he have to take the rug?

Ghosted by Anonymous @ 09/22/2009 11:10 PM EDT

– Matt
This is Anonymous from right above this comment, I forgot to put in my name. Any ways, In case she isn’t keen on Jason moving in, you should wake up early one day, and cook breakfast for her. leave it on the table all pretty looking and set up jason by the dirty dishes. then you go and hop back into bed.
She then wakes up, finds breakfast ready, and sees jason by the pots and pans. How could she not like him after he’s made her breakfast, right? it Couldnt of been you, you were in bed the whole time.

Ghosted by Louie @ 09/22/2009 11:13 PM EDT

Tres: It was Paul’s appearance on Pushing Daisies that got me into the show in the first place! Excellent performance, excellent show, I got into it…the penultimate episode of Season 1. Sob.

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 09/22/2009 11:18 PM EDT

Matt, I see she didn’t kill you. Did you use a tazer? Kidding. I’ll be heading to Walgreens soon in the
future. I hope I find something good here.

Ghosted by Lonestar76 @ 09/23/2009 12:29 AM EDT

Just finished the new Da Vinci code sequel. Seriously awesome. I cannot, however, say the same about candy corn dots, which suck big time.

Ghosted by ericnrosesmom @ 09/23/2009 12:35 AM EDT

Target has a good bit of Peanuts Halloween merch in the dollar section right now… notebooks, stickers, etc. They also have cool, yet generic (but $1, so who cares) coffee mugs… one of Snoopy on his house and one of Charlie Brown.

And Office stuff too, if you’re into that. And I am.

Ghosted by Andy @ 09/23/2009 1:00 AM EDT

That’s pretty cool. Certainly keeps with the great pumpkin theme. Hey maybe that was Snoopy all along.

Yay! Snoopy Head-O-Lantern-A-Rama!
