09/19/2009: Cap’n Crunch’s Halloween Crunch Cereal!

Ah ha! Proof positive! Who could deny that the Halloween season is officially on when we now have the chance to eat it for breakfast? Mr. Crunch, you are a holy signal!

Cap’n Crunch’s “Halloween Crunch” is back! This tricky cereal has eluded me for several years, so while I can’t claim that it’s any different than the Halloween Crunch sold last year or even the year before that, I can claim that perfection had already been achieved and that there was no reason to frick with the formula.

The box is terrific and spooky, featuring Cap’n Crunch dressed as some kind of pirate/mummy hybrid who, through means we could never understand, has gained the power to shoot hadoukens. A benevolent mutant, Mummy Crunch uses this power not for assault, but rather to imbue dry bowls of cereal with warm and magical milk. His fingers have become obtuse udders, and you barely have a chance to process it before getting smacked in the head with the best block of on-box text in the history of words: “GHOSTS TURN MILK GREEN!”

You see, in Halloween Crunch, you not only receive the standard corn ‘n oat throatbusters, but a special assortment of reddish, ghost-shaped pieces with an action feature. When milk is added, these ghosts piss out a light green dye, which not only makes the ghosts look like melting Gremlins, but also tints your once-white cow juice a rich, creamy green. Appetizing? No. Halloweeny? Absolutely.

I was hoping for a stronger green, but even the subdued hue of the milk is enough to mark this cereal bowl as something special. The green is created by bits of dried, flavorless food dye hidden within the ghost pieces, so even if it looks disgusting, it still tastes normal enough. (At least, I’m assuming it does. I can’t eat cereal with milk. Green or not, milk in its pure form is my most storied enemy.)

While Cap’n Crunch would have us believe that his magic udder fingers have brought forth a new technology, he’s a big liar. This same exact effect was employed in 2005’s Holiday Cheetos, thereby confirming that the chief trait shared between Christmas and Halloween is that it’s on-target to make random foods turn green.

And wow, now that I think back — this isn’t even new for Cap’n Crunch! As far back as 2004, Cap’n Crunch was still peddling this color-changing cereal shtick. I’d tell him to get a new act, but as I just linked to proof that I’ve been writing about Cap’n Crunch for at least five years…pot kettle black.

The back of the box is jampacked with games and puzzles. There are six distinct activities on the boxback, including a word search, a crossword puzzle, “can you find” games and more. Between all of the stuff on the box and the added bonus of watching your milk slowly turn from stark white to radioactive green, Halloween Crunch has got to be one of the most visually stimulating breakfasts of all time.

Happy SNT. Any stupid horror movies on in the late hours? I think tonight’s thread needs a theme.

And don’t forget to work on your Die-O-Ramas today — there’s only a week left in the contest. Nag, nag, nag.

On the subject of bad horror movies: MST3K. Nothing more needs to be said.

And for those who want more ass-kicking cereal mascots, here’s Breakfast of the Gods.

Ghosted by TB Tabby @ 09/19/2009 9:56 PM EDT

‘cept with MST3k, not all of them are horror, I rent them from netflix and today I have Tormented and Santa Claus Conquers the Martians.

Happy SNT!

As to movies tonight, SyFy’s got a whole lineup, including something with Danny Trejo called “Haunted Prison”, which sounds fairly awesome. Dracula: Dead and Loving it is on Action Max and Final Destination is on Encore Action. The Mist and The Ninth Gate are on obscure Shotime channels. Plus Road House is on Spike and there’s a Project Runway marathon, for counter-programming. Check your local listings!

Manimal!!! Congrats!!! So are you sacrificing offerings in hopes of getting a boy this time? ;) I might have to take issue with your claim of finding THE cutest reusable shopping bags, because I got an adorable Skelanimals one at Target. It folds up into a nifty little convenient package, much like another Target bag I have.

And speaking of reusable stuff, I came up with a fun tip for anybody that’s the type to schlep their gear to the market. I noticed that even though I take canvas bags to the farmer’s market with me, I’d still end up with bags to carry smooshy stuff like tomatoes. If anybody has old McDonald’s McBoo pails, you can totally take that baby in and fill ‘er up. So much more pizazz than an old Cool Whip container, plus the handle is convenient! I only have an old Pirates of the Caribbean one, but I notice that a whole influx of McBoo’s has hit eBay since I last checked.

Great costumes, Cheetara!

OMG Cheetara! I was at Dragon*Con too! I can’t believe there was another XE-er (we need a less awkward name, y’all) there and I didn’t know it, that’s just my luck. I can say for sure that our paths didn’t cross though, because I would have sure as hell remembered seeing a Daria costume. That is all kinds of awesome.

Terror Claws, I have you beat. My town only has one grocery store. Well, I guess technically the tiny meat market counts as a second one, but no one ever goes there. It reeks too much of dead fish.

Ghosted by jazzy @ 09/19/2009 10:12 PM EDT

Mrs. Manimal would prefer a boy.
Her arguments were (A) that she was not done; that she would know (whatever) and (B) that the 2nd one grew up to fast (that is true. I can unbiasedly say she is acclerated).
I don’t care what it is. As long as it’s got talons and a forked tongue like the other 2, I’m content.

Since we’re talking about horror movies here is something funny. For certain reasons, I was
watching The Suite Life On Deck. There was a
scene were some angry kids gang up on one of
the twins and surround him. It reminds me of
that scene in Day of The Dead, where the
zombies tear Captain Rhodes in half and start
to eat him. Great and gruesome scene.

I got some good SNT topics, though I’m gonna wait till October to use them. Prevents Halloween burnout. The
Asylum opened yesterday at my local shopping mall.
They actually claim they’ll make people shit their
pants in fear. If anyone shits their pants at the mall,
it would probably be from the Chinese food they sell
there. My apologies to the Chinese readers here. There
aren’t Chinese people working there anyway.

Matt, I hope you’re feeling better. Hope Waiterbot recovers from his ordeal. I saw Blair Witch 2 on
the Sci-Fi Channel today. I saw Space Mutiny last
night. One of the worst sci-fi movies ever made.
Don’t watch it without Tom Servo and Crow.

Mr. Manimal: I didn’t see your second post and was wondering why everyone was congratulating you for visiting the dollar store. Now I saw the real reason. Congrats! :D

Fox: That Myers house is awesome. I love shit like that. Noticed that they’re having a Halloween party on 10/31, too, complete with a giant screen viewing of Halloween I & II right on the front lawn. So great. Too bad NC is so far away. We’re hoping to hit at least 2 of the more local Halloween haunts this year.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/19/2009 10:36 PM EDT

Well, for the record, I am also accepting congratulations for the DOLLAR TREE excursion. :)

Ghosted by The Manimal @ 09/19/2009 10:46 PM EDT

Congrats Manimal!

Gears: Blackest Night has been awesome. Marvel is rolling out their latest Marvel Zombies mini now. Plus, I got the third issue of Freddy vs. Jason vs. Ash Nightmare Warriors mini.

Oddly enough, I haven’t seen the Halloween Captain Crunch yet. The grocery store I work at sells tons of Christmas Crunch between early November and late December, but I’d never heard of this until now. I’ll have to look around for it.

I’m just hanging out online. I’m not much into horror movies, and I don’t have cable. I did buy “X-Men Origins: Wolverine” this week. I liked it – thought it was nicely action-filled, if not always the most coherent script. But Hugh Jackman did briefly run through a waterfall naked, so it’s not all terrible. ;)

Ghosted by starwenn @ 09/19/2009 11:01 PM EDT

And congratulations, Manimal! I should have gone back and re-read all the posts…

Happy SNT! I’m really getting in the Halloween spirit. I was discussing with my neighbor how we’re going to be decorating the place for Halloween. We agreed I’m going to go all out spooky on the front and he’ll do more the “Fall harvest” thing on his side. I got some Halloween yogurt at the store the other day and even ate a couple Halloween Oreos today. I really a back of trick-or-treat bags of Goldfish crackers, though, just for the little fish with the mask and cape on the front. The thought of Goldfish crackers dressing up for Halloween makes me want to dance Snoopy-style.

Going to the PA Ren Faire tomorrow YES YES YES whores and ale!

Ghosted by Mystie @ 09/19/2009 11:08 PM EDT

I can’t believe it! I STILL can’t find Halloween Dots! Well, on the up side, it’s still extremely early in the season and I have more than a few stores left to check. *In Gollum voice* I WILL find you MY PRECIOUS!!! I’m gonna pop a scary flick in, if I can’t find one on the ole boob tube.
Cheetara: I like your costumes :)

my girlfriend and i just watched “the burning” on fearnet…… i forgot how brutal it was. this movie scared the absolute shit outta me when i was a kid… ALSO!- cool little tidbit – this was jason alexander’s film debut! i didn’t know this until we started watching….

happy SNT everyone.

Yay for forbidden zone — still one of the craziest films I own. It actually just appeared in my hand whilst at the local dvd store, whilst I was in a completely different letter. I didn’t even notice the Oingo Boingo-ness until I got home, so I’m kinda confused on how I got it.

I still haven’t seen the Burning; it’s never on in the UK, and there’s no dvd to be found here either. It wouldn’t surprise me if it got banned as a video nasty in the 80s, and just haven’t been unbanned. Which would be total suckage if true. Boo.

Ghosted by mr adam we @ 09/20/2009 12:10 AM EDT

Looking at the big list of cuts and bannings, The Burning was banned in the UK until 1992,where it had about 19 seconds of cuttage. It’s been uncut since 2002, but really hard to get hold of.

Hmmm – maybe this will be the year I’ll get me a copy. It must be better than One Eyed Monster

Ghosted by mr adam we @ 09/20/2009 12:14 AM EDT

I saw this at my local grocery store, and I knew at some point in time it was going to be on XE.com, I just wasn’t expecting it anytime soon.

Since we were on the subject at one point earlier this thread, I recently saw a bad horror movie. Its name is “The Incredibly Strange Creatures Who Stopped Living and Became Mixed Up Zombies”

It seemed promising at first. It failed to deliver.

Ghosted by Capt\'n PlantMonster @ 09/20/2009 12:31 AM EDT

Oh, that movie would be absolutely horrible without the MST3K treatment. I’ve grown to have a certain love for it from having seen it so many times and my weakness for 60’s fashion, but yeah, it’s awful.

*cough cough* http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=O6nlrERIDDE *ahem*

Wooweee Halloween is on it’s waayyyyyyyyyy! I watched a movie called Brainscan earlier today. I remember seeing it for the first time in 94. Today was the first time I had seen it since then. Check it out if your a horror fan. It stars the kid from Terminator 2 JD.

ULTRAMAN,I don’t know if you have a Rite-Aid where you live but they have the bat and ghost dots there!Never heard of The Burning.Gonna go look it up on Amazon.I watched Joy Ride 2 tonight and surprisingly it didn’t suck.Wasn’t as good as the forst one though. They left it open for a part 3.Also watched Dark Town.A low budget movie about vampires. Now that sucked big time!Maybe you fellas might like it as there are some lesbians scenes in it.This year I feel extra Halloweeney so I’m already done decorating.(except the front yard. That I will hold off on until Oct.1st)I’ve never put out the decorations up in september before!Maybe I shall post some pictures later.I’m glad that you’ve already started the Halloween countdown,Matt.I could never burnout on Halloween!

Captain Crunch tears up my mouth like razor blades- is the trick to let it soak for 20 minutes in your liquid of choice?

Matt- have you tried chocolate almond milk? It is so good! Very smooth and a little thicker than regular milk. —Sorry about your skunked beer! You will have to make a run to the store in the morning. :)

Ghosted by ~Rae~ @ 09/20/2009 3:15 AM EDT

I didn’t realize beer skunkery could be so traumatic. Do they still do that “born on date” stuff? I know the latest gimmick is color changing bottles to prevent one from drinking been that’s improperly chilled. Assuming your hands are completely insensitive to temperature, I guess.

Good morning X-E’ers

Matt

I’m glad to see you found out about Halloween Crunch before they sold out, depsite my multiple failed attempts to email you that day (At least Outlook said they failed, if you got hit with multiples, sorry).

Also here’s testimonial for your vast economical empire. I just picked up ‘Garfield Holiday Celebration’ as a direct result of my daughters fascination with the Garfield Halloween song from your Jukebox, behold the selling power of X-Entertainment.

I do remember there was a brand of Cheetoes that turned your fingers black, can’t recall the flavor right now. Probably the nacho ones.

I can’t wait for Count Chocola to come back, I may actually buy myself a box because it’s been so long since I’ve had it. The other Halloween cereals just don’t have that cocoa kick to them. Halloween is about chocolate!

Happy Sunday Morning Thread everyone! Sorry I missed last night; that’s what happens when it’s football season and I have company at the house every week.

Manimal
Congratulations!

Matt
Wow, you mean there are other people out there that eat cereal dry? I can’t stand milk in cereal at ALL. Turns everything into a Soggy mess. Blech.

Larry
RE: Cereal Prizes. Yeah, I know what you mean. I generally buy cereal based on what prize you get on the inside, no matter how stupid it is. Lately it’s been really difficult to buy cereal at all!

Sometimes my craving for Cap’n Crunch overides my desire to avoid serious mouth trauma. Today is not one of those days.

I did pick up some Count Chocula though. I’m not sure why I picked the Monster cereal that’s available all the time, when the seasonal Boo and Franken Berry were also sitting right there. I think the Count glamoured me.

And Congrats, Manimal!

I use a program called IDM (Internet Download Manager) and you can set it to automatically download different file types instead of playing/watching them stream online. Example: I set it to automatically download .FLV files, and it will download YouTube videos instead of playing them when I click on them. Add MP3 to the list, and same goes for the Jukebox.

Need to get me some Captain Crunch. Have the Boo Berry Fruit by the Foot. The makers of those things should be paying XE for the free advertising at this point.

Also I thought I was the only one who hated milk in its pure form. Can’t drink it because it just tastes yucky.

Matt, my wife has a serious hate-on for you because of my constant asking her to look for and buy Halloween foodstuffs.

Congratulations, Manimal! Your seed is virile and fertile!

Love the costumes, Cheetara! I’m kinda crushing on you right now.

My recommendation for bad horror movie is The Greenskeeper. It stars John Rocker (yes, the baseball player) and features the Atlanta radio morning show crew the Regular Guys. This is the only clip I could find, and it features a bad movie within the bad movie…and the villain is played by Larry of the aforementioned Regular Guys: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=6BkuSycPO_Q

It’s a great fall day. I have the crock pot crokin’, football is on TV, Jones Soda and vodka on ice, Bat Dots in the teeth, and X-E on the laptop.

Matt, I thought posted this earlier but I must have spaced. If you want to try a winning beer try Michelob’s Jack’s Pumpkin Spice Ale. It’s pretty good and is about as light tasting as a New Castle. Good for what “ales” you. Ho Ha Ha. I’ll stop.

Hey kids. Been out of town so I totally missed SNT. Hope you guys found something fun to watch.

I too hate milk. I have since I was a kid. I’ll put a touch of it in my cereal but that’s it, and I’ll end up tossing the rest of it out. I refuse to drink it.

Manimal: Congrats! Here’s hoping for forked tongue, horns, and tail. Ye demon seed hast gone forth and spawned in the name of all infernal!

Cheetara: The Daria costume is about 6 different kinds of awesome. I’d love to have seen that in person.

Lonestar76: I’m seriously loving the Meyers house. I’m in SC and might try to make it up there to check it out sometime between now and Halloween.

well, if Kogi Kaishakunin is going to insist on being all unsubtle about things let me just say outright Jason, that all you really need is Firefox + downloadhelper to download youtube vids and other ::cough:: things you might be interested in, you don’t need some program that’s gonna nag you about a !30! dollar registration fee. My absolute favorite bad 80s Halloweem themed horror movie Trick or Treat, mostly because of the cast. It starred Marc Price (best known as Skippy from Family Ties), Gene Simmons (the fire breathing demonic bass player from KISS) and in a cameo playing a preacher, the godfather of heavy metal himself, Ozzy Osbourne.
