X-E’s Shoebox Die-O-Rama Art Contest!

EDIT: Comments are back up as of 5 PM Sunday! YAY.

Some of you asked if I was going to run any new artsy Halloween contests this year. Yes, I am! Right now!

It's time for X-E's Shoebox Die-O-Rama Contest!

Your mission: Use a shoebox to create some kind of spooky Halloween diorama. You can give it any kind of specific theme -- a graveyard diorama, an Elm Street diorama, an undersea monster attack diorama -- whatever you want! So long as we can effectively classify your diorama as "spooky" or "Halloweeny," it's valid!

You can use whatever materials you prefer: Paper, clay, plastics, cereal bits, blah blah blah. The one and only rule is that your diorama must be housed within the cardboard confines of a shoebox.

Entries will be judged by me and a team of people who just happen to be on AIM whenever I decide to do the judging.

And there will be prizes!

The grand prize winner will receive this amazing "Bloody Mary" Living Dead Doll, which is absolutely disturbing and would look just great rested upon the faux fireplace in the corner of your living room. Five runners-up will receive a random scary DVD of my choosing.

You have two weeks to send me a photo of your diorama. Please include the title of your piece with a brief description. This contest ends on Saturday, September 26th at 10 PM. Winners will be announced within one week of that time. :)

Oh, and if you can't figure out what the fuck a diorama in a shoebox is supposed to look like, here's an example:

You probably won't win if yours looks anything like that, though.

Other rules: Contest is open to everyone, no matter where they live -- BUT, if you're on the other side of the planet, I reserve the right to send you an Amazon gift certificate instead of something that will cost me an additional 70,000 dollars to ship.

Get out your construction paper, and make with the creepy creativity. GOOD LUCK.

PS: The Jukebox has been refreshed with almost twice as many songs. Call it inspiration!

PPS: I can't believe that "shoebox" isn't a real word. I'm told it's supposed to be "shoe box." I refuse to adhere.

Right on DJ D! Kanye is a cartoon. Plain and simple. He represents the MTV lifestyle. Me me me. If it feels good do it and screw who ever it harms.
To defend people like that…I don’t know.

Let’s talk Halloween! Just ordered some Jack-o-lantern brew for review. Got an invite to review it! That’s crazy! They paid for my order and shipped it over night. My wish has come true; free beer.

Ultraman don’t feel bad, I haven’t found them yet either. Walmart didn’t have any Dots at all, and Kroger had miniature boxes of regular Dots in the halloween aisle but no special ones. Has anybody seen them in the Chicago/northwest Indiana area? I’m mostly interested in the blood orange ones. I’ve even looked for real blood oranges in the produce section but no luck there either.

Did you guys know Matt pays me 10% of his earnings to click ads all day. I’m gonna buy a solid gold go kart next week.

Damn kittymao, your sculpting is fantastic.
This should be good.

Fox
Do you get a solid gold blue shell to go with it?

I bought two “pie pumpkins” today. I figure if I don’t get around to making pumpkin bread out of them like I’m planning, I can carve them up. Until then, they look cute sitting on my table.

I kind of want to do a diorama but I have no idea what to do. :|

Oooh, that movie looks cool. Gotta put that on my list of movies to see, along with Toy Story 3, Inglourious Basterds, and Cloudy With a Chance of Assorted Food Products of Great Size Raining Down from the Heavens and Supposedly Causing Substantial Amounts Horrorful and Brutally Cruel Deaths.

Obviously the VMA thing was a total dick move on Kanye’s part. He’s already admitted as such himself, so I dunno. It’s not like it’s the first time he’s acted a fool at an awards show, and when people like Chris Brown are still being celebrated, I just can’t bring myself to write Kanye off completely. I tried to watch Leno last night to see his interview but I couldn’t make it through the vortex of unfunny.

So did anybody follow the news coming out of the D23 Expo? Mostly all stuff that was already rumored but they gave details on Star Tours 2, remaking the Magic Kingdom and that they’re getting cold feet about putting Captain EO back in at Disneyland but they might still do it.

That movie looks absolutely terrifying. Am I the only one that really wants to see Jennifer’s Body? It looks ridiculous, but in a totally awesome way.

erg. Im still trying to figure out the order of the comments…. ah well. I also can not do a diorama this time. Sucks cuz I love doing them and Im pretty durn good at em too!! Cant wait to see the others. The whole Kanye thing was terrible! I’d have thrown the Moon Man at his head!! If you won the Bloody Mary doll and then Kanye jumped out and grabbed it from you and stomped on your diorama you would not say that was totally punk rock!!

Bill- Ms. Swayze aka Baby looks like my cat Rooney! If she has spots on her belly- watch out!its an Oci Cat They stay crazy!! Foreeeeever! They pull tacks out of walls with their teeth! Lunge unexpectedly claws first on to your face at the sound of a beer bottle tipping over! They decide to try to jump ( and land their 6 lb ass) on delicate paper hanging lamps for no reason even though it had already been hanging there for a year!!! Most kittens chill at about age 1 or so. These. Not so much. Sigh. I should do a diorama on my evil cat…

I can’t wait to see what some people around here come up with for the contest. I’m going to give it a try but I’m expecting some real creative stuff to come out of this.

Decorations around the house have started going up and now the countdown… Halloween is here baby!

On the Halloween Dots front, I found mine at Walgreens. I’m in Michigan.

Paranormal Activity looks promising, but maybe I’m getting a little cynical about the whole “fake documentary” style. It looks like it could be hit or miss.

Chestnuts roasted by tanta07 @ 09/16/2009 9:09 AM

You know that I whom some days ago you are walking at my building looked at illusion. Because as for me the delicatessen and at least it is on 100 years old, where this is old you know that is. That was visible, like the white lump crossed the room and moved. There is no window in me, therefore as for this when it is the light/write from passing, it is not. I do my diorama in this.

Chestnuts roasted by Yuan Jing @ 09/16/2009 9:47 AM

I’m starting to understand Yuan Jing a little bit. Is this a bad sign?

Chestnuts roasted by tanta07 @ 09/16/2009 10:01 AM

I’ve been waiting for that dang-blasted PA movie for years now. It was released on the film circuit a ways back, and was near-universally praised as one of the scariest movies in years. So, naturally, Paramount bought the movie rights, announced they were planning a re-make, and threw PA in a deep, dark hole. Thankfully, Paramount has since come to their senses, and are giving the original the shot it deserves. Damn film companies…

And if Yuan Jing actually makes a diorama, I suspect it will be glorious.

Chestnuts roasted by EYErisprEYEd @ 09/16/2009 10:03 AM

I’m going to guess Yuan Jing’s diorama will take place in a delicatessen…

Matt, I’ve been having the same problem with too large of a file. Photobucket would be helpful.

I find it amusing that the “title” image for this contest clearly states “HOEBOX”.

I’m going to make and submit a HOEBOX instead.

On second thought, forget the part about submitting it, I’m keepin’ it!

Awww Bill she’s totally precious. I’m so jealous. I never got to know my cat as a kitten. Give her a kissy for me! :) I personally like Swayzy just because of the creative spelling, although Baby is really cute, too. Make Baby her nickname! And omg the second pic of her chewing on your (I assume) finger? And you sporting a someecards shirt? Awesomesauce x2.

Big McLargehuge: I’m so sorry to hear about your kitty. One of my cats got lung cancer at about that age (we swore she was sneaking cigs behind the house; none of my family smokes, and who gets lung cancer for no reason?!) so I know how you feel. I hope that the rest of his days are happy ones and I’m sorry for the bad news.

squee4242, I totally want to see Jennifer’s Body. It does look painfully bad, but I like painfully bad. I’m pretty sure I can convince my best friend to go with me, considering he’s male and it has Megan Fox in it and all.

Chestnuts roasted by Nicole @ 09/16/2009 12:03 PM

You might as well make one of these dioramas. You’re gonna spend $20 a month on paper towels anyway.

Hazard – Here are a couple of other songs for Halloween that I don’t think have been mentioned:

Megadeth – Sleepwalker
Zombina and the Skeletones – Monster Mash (they do a really cool doo-wop rendition of it. Any of their other songs will also work.)
Shadow Reichenstein – It’s Halloween (naturally. Their other songs are just as good.)
Moribund Thirteen A.D – Peter Vincent
Zombeast – Flesh Eaters, Cthulhu
Blitzkid – Candyman (and most any of their other songs.)

I’ll post more when I have a chance to browse through my CDs and MP3s.

Jennifer’s Body looks like a movie Megan Fox would have made several years ago, before she was famous. When I first saw the preview, I thought “That girl looks a lot like Megan Fox…but of course, she wouldn’t be in a schlocky B-grade horror movie.” Then the preview said “Starring Megan Fox” and I went “Huh-whuuuuh?” This movie has “contractual obligation” written all over it.

On the bright side, I can’t wait till she starts doing promotional interviews for it. Considering the amount of bitching she did about being in the super-mega-blockbuster Transformers movies, I can’t imagine what she’ll have to say about being in this obvious turd.

Chestnuts roasted by tanta07 @ 09/16/2009 1:05 PM

Hazard- While I respect the newer darker Halloween songs, ya need some happy:

Haunted House by Jumpin’ Gene Simmons
Dead Man’s Curve by Jan and Dean
Martian Hop by Ran-Dells (kind of Halloween)
Dragula by Rob Zombie
Little Red Riding Hood- Sam the Sham and the Pharaohs
The Headless Horseman by Bing Crosby and the Rhythmaires

That’s all I can think of for now….
