Halloween Chips Ahoy!

UPDATE: Now you can relive X-E's 2009 Halloween Countdown more easily than ever -- and in it's original design! On the top of the right-side column of every page herein, you'll see a master guide linking to all of 2009's Countdown articles! After you're done sifting through those, you can navigate to other X-E Halloween Countdowns. Enjoy!

No, this post isn't meant to signal the start of this year's Halloween Countdown -- in whatever form it may take. Rather, I just have a primal need to write about new editions of Chips Ahoy! cookies the moment they hit the shelves.

For the first time in history, Nabisco has graced the Chips Ahoy! brand with its very own special Halloween edition. Though pessimists have already marked this as the absolute zenith of humanity and lamented that we have nowhere to go but down, we must remind ourselves to live in the moment and enjoy this.

I'll get to the actual edibles in a second, because as we all know, Halloween editions of anything are really judged by their packages. Aside from the various bits of spooky decorations all over the bag, the key element is the official Chips Ahoy! mascot (that anthropomorphic cookie from the commercials), dressed as Dracula, complete with what appears to be a cape made entirely out of chocolate.

In this guise, the Chips Ahoy! mascot is a sight that I can fixate upon for 15-20 minutes without the slightest distraction. It's way too early in the season for me to soapbox your ass with eight paragraphs about what makes Halloween great, but if I can summarize in six syllables: DRACULA THE COOKIE.

While a lesser brand would've seen fit to modify its packaging and call it a dark and scary night, there's actually more to these Halloween Chips Ahoy! cookies than that. In tribute to Satan, these special exclusive limited edition snacks arrive not just with the everyday chocolate chips, but also with a smattering of crushed up orange M&M's. (Well, they're not M&M's...but they're M&M's.)

I can't say that the addition of mock M&M's is an improvement to the flavor of original Chips Ahoy! cookies, but it isn't the ruination of it either. Truth be told, you're really only buying these because DRACULA THE COOKIE is on the package. Is that not enough?

Happy SNT. For those curious, yes, I will be doing the Halloween Countdown. I will not miss the opportunity to reclaim my rightful virtual throne by way of easy scribblings about things with werewolf heads. But I wouldn't dare promise that I'll be writing everyday, because I doubt I will, and it's not like you'd believe it, anyway. Nevertheless, expect the official start date to be around the time suggested by my six-year-old Shrunken Apple Head. And there will probably be a few other mini-posts like this on our way there. :)

I never lie when I tag out with a smiley face, btw.

Oh, and the Halloween Jukebox is up. I'd link you to it, but it isn't hard to find. I think you'll enjoy it more if you go through the rewarding experience of locating it yourself. Good luck hunting!

All right, Guise. How much did you pay Matt to work your name into the article? :)

Correction, Matt. I will be buying these cookies not because it’s DRACULA COOKIE, but because you wrote about it, thus compelling me to buy them.

DJ D, Frank Darabont is going to do The Long Walk movie…don’t know if he’s begun work on it yet, but it will be awesome.

Teddy Ray: I thought I had read something about that a long time ago but haven’t heard anything in quite a while so I just figured it wasn’t happening. That would be great. He’s proven himself pretty well. I don’t think I’d want anyone else to do it really.

Not to divert any love away from this site (like that’s possible anyway), but has anyone checked out the new site Cogitz.com? It’s from the creator of Listverse.com and is all about weird, scary, dark, and unexplained things. Could generate some discussion during the Halloween season.

I saw some special edition “fudge topped” Chips Ahoy the other day, but haven’t seen these yet. Let the wild rumpus begin! Yay for Halloween.

Chestnuts roasted by Tommy Day @ 09/06/2009 3:48 PM

What the hell’s a rumpus?

Chestnuts roasted by DJ D @ 09/06/2009 4:07 PM

DJ D

Please tell me you’ve read “Where the Wild Things Are”

@Teddy I’m just slightly concerned how Matt intends to see the food “in this guise”…if cameras are involved, he’ll need to get me verrrrrrrrrry drunk first.

DJD: It means a good time. You know , like a party.

I’m not normally a Steven King fan except for Shawshank and Green Mile, but I liked the Mist alot.

Few things make happier that Matt typing “Halloween Countdown”.

It took me a second watching to enjoy The Mist. Maybe it was the company I saw it with the first time.

I’ve been eating some Chips Deluxe cookies today, and the main Elf (does he even have a name?) kinda looks like The Leprechaun. I’m kinda surprised that with all of the Christmas horror movies featuring a killer Santas, snowmen, and even a gingerbread man, we have never gotten a killer elf or reindeer one.

I went to the casino today and discovered a “House of the Dead” slot machine and had a really fun time playing it, even though I lost. Any slot machine that allows you to kill zombies is a great machine. They also a similar one based on “Aliens” that’s also fun.

I’m pretty sure somebodies already made flicks about killer elves and reindeer. And if they haven’t, then they WILL, eventually! Give it time.

rum?pus? ?[ruhm-puhs]
–noun, plural -pus?es.

1.a noisy or violent disturbance; commotion; uproar: There was a terrible rumpus going on upstairs.

Chestnuts roasted by Tommy Day @ 09/06/2009 8:11 PM

Ahhh fall approacheth! No air conditioning droning in the background, meaning I don’t have to strain my poor laptop speakers volume capacity, just so I can hear a youtube video.

Pumpkin Hershey Kisses are back. However…not buying them. I know how I get with them, and weight watchers would not be very happy with me. Rather use the points on something more filling.

So yeah…gotta find the Mist to watch one of these days. Maybe Best buy has it for cheap. I got 21 with Kevin Spacey and have not had the chance to watch it yet.

Chestnuts roasted by mandy_Reeves @ 09/06/2009 8:16 PM

A rec room was once refered to as a rumpus room if i’m not mistaken…

Chestnuts roasted by phunqsauce @ 09/06/2009 8:26 PM

Thanks, folks, on the clarification of rumpus.

Cameron T.: Actually, no. Somehow my childhood came and went and I never read it. I guess I should with the movie coming out and everything. From what I hear it’s a pretty big deal. I had never read The Lord of the Rings books or The Chronicles of Narnia either until the movies came out. I don’t know where I’ve been.

Oh sweet jeebus. I can’t wait for Fall, not only because the A/C bills are breaking me, but I’m totally jizzing myself over the Halloween goods. I was flailing around like an epileptic in the Halloween section A.C. Moore earlier. I don’t know what the rules are as far as decorating my portion of apartment, but since my section faces the front floor level, I should get to cobweb up the front bushes, right?

Oh and today I got lost driving around some farmland with my gay psychic friend next door. I agreed to drive him around to his friend’s because I wanted to get some pot for my fiance so I needed him to call the teens upstairs to order some. Oh the adventures I have.

Oddly enough, I haven’t seen these at the grocery store where I’m a cashier yet, but I have seen Halloween Oreos. Unlike the half-assed “Winter Oreos,” these all-out for the spooky season, with orange cream, ghosts on the cookie, and a big, bold “Halloween” on the package.

I hope this means Edy’s Pumpkin Ice Cream will returning soon, too. I sooo miss that. Second best ice cream flavor on the planet after Bryers’ Cherry Vanilla.

Stores aren’t the only ones throwing out early signs of the Halloween season. It’s only about 65 degrees and cloudy in southern New Jersey as I type this, and it’s not supposed to get much warmer for the rest of the week. Even Mother Nature wants fall to get here faster.

Even so, it’s still too early for me to break out the Halloween decorations. I live in an apartment that’s in the back of a house that’s set too far off the road for anyone to notice decorating efforts, anyway. I’ll probably put up a few general fall and football decorations sometime this week, but I won’t be really thinking Halloween until the end of the month. Hope I come up with a better costume than “random fairy” this time.

No Spooky Chips at Target, but did get the Halloween Oreos. The Jones’ are out too, but appear to be repeats.
