Halloween Chips Ahoy!

UPDATE: Now you can relive X-E's 2009 Halloween Countdown more easily than ever -- and in it's original design! On the top of the right-side column of every page herein, you'll see a master guide linking to all of 2009's Countdown articles! After you're done sifting through those, you can navigate to other X-E Halloween Countdowns. Enjoy!

No, this post isn't meant to signal the start of this year's Halloween Countdown -- in whatever form it may take. Rather, I just have a primal need to write about new editions of Chips Ahoy! cookies the moment they hit the shelves.

For the first time in history, Nabisco has graced the Chips Ahoy! brand with its very own special Halloween edition. Though pessimists have already marked this as the absolute zenith of humanity and lamented that we have nowhere to go but down, we must remind ourselves to live in the moment and enjoy this.

I'll get to the actual edibles in a second, because as we all know, Halloween editions of anything are really judged by their packages. Aside from the various bits of spooky decorations all over the bag, the key element is the official Chips Ahoy! mascot (that anthropomorphic cookie from the commercials), dressed as Dracula, complete with what appears to be a cape made entirely out of chocolate.

In this guise, the Chips Ahoy! mascot is a sight that I can fixate upon for 15-20 minutes without the slightest distraction. It's way too early in the season for me to soapbox your ass with eight paragraphs about what makes Halloween great, but if I can summarize in six syllables: DRACULA THE COOKIE.

While a lesser brand would've seen fit to modify its packaging and call it a dark and scary night, there's actually more to these Halloween Chips Ahoy! cookies than that. In tribute to Satan, these special exclusive limited edition snacks arrive not just with the everyday chocolate chips, but also with a smattering of crushed up orange M&M's. (Well, they're not M&M's...but they're M&M's.)

I can't say that the addition of mock M&M's is an improvement to the flavor of original Chips Ahoy! cookies, but it isn't the ruination of it either. Truth be told, you're really only buying these because DRACULA THE COOKIE is on the package. Is that not enough?

Happy SNT. For those curious, yes, I will be doing the Halloween Countdown. I will not miss the opportunity to reclaim my rightful virtual throne by way of easy scribblings about things with werewolf heads. But I wouldn't dare promise that I'll be writing everyday, because I doubt I will, and it's not like you'd believe it, anyway. Nevertheless, expect the official start date to be around the time suggested by my six-year-old Shrunken Apple Head. And there will probably be a few other mini-posts like this on our way there. :)

I never lie when I tag out with a smiley face, btw.

Oh, and the Halloween Jukebox is up. I'd link you to it, but it isn't hard to find. I think you'll enjoy it more if you go through the rewarding experience of locating it yourself. Good luck hunting!

I’m still not sure how i feel about it, part of me wants to hate it but it’s hard to hate a movie that still has you talking about it a year after you first saw it. I may have to watch it again just to figure out which side of the fence i am on with this one. I guess I know what I’m doing tomorrow.

Yeah, I thought The Mist was great. Pretty interesting social interaction studies. Frank Darabont’s done good King movies. Like Shawskank.

Chestnuts roasted by Dead Red. @ 09/06/2009 1:35 AM

Frank Darabont, the guy who directed the Mist, and Shawshank, got signed on to direct the upcoming AMC series The Walking Dead, which is based on an insanely good comic of the same name by Robert Kirkman. Signing on Darabont to direct made it the priciest deal in television history. Also, hi matt, I’m glad you’re going to do a Countdown after all.

And I dont know how many of you guys know or care, but there is a channel on justin.tv that plays nothing but mst3k, 24/7. It’s put together by the guy who used to play Dr. Forrester.

Happy Halloween

Matt I actually watched The Mist after reading your article.

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Galvatron @ 09/06/2009 1:43 AM

Sorry for the double post, but I hit the ‘Post’ button too soon.

I’ve watched it a few times and made a few people watch it as well. They came away with the same reaction. “That was fucked up…!”

I watched it with the woman tonight and she loved it. It’s definitely more about the people than the monsters.

Chestnuts roasted by Darth Galvatron @ 09/06/2009 1:48 AM

It was awesome! I bit the cookie and then the cookie bit me! Anthropomorphic cookie hickey!

Chestnuts roasted by Clemond N. Flinch @ 09/06/2009 2:01 AM

Yeah, that was one of the only complaints made about it. People said it couldn’t decide whether it wanted to be a horror movie or a pseudo-psychological-horror movie. Which was fine by me.

Oh man, when that huge thing showed up… I loved the character’s expressions. They’d pretty much given up all hope. Which made the ending all the more tragic, of course…

Chestnuts roasted by Dead Red. @ 09/06/2009 2:06 AM

Good to see you back, Matt, and glad to see shit about cookies. Who doesn’t love cookies?

Now, not to sound creepy or anything, but I am curious to know what the hiatus has been about. Are the comment rumors true? Did you get… MARRIED?

Cause that’s what the kids are saying.

Chestnuts roasted by AIF @ 09/06/2009 2:34 AM

AIF: Nope, not married. Just working. A lot. :)

Re: The Mist – Over time, I’m not really sure if I was a fan of the ending. I might’ve preferred a more open ending, like the book had, even though I usually hate it when movies have those. But you gotta admire their chutzpah: You don’t do an ending like that just to sell extra tickets.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 09/06/2009 2:40 AM

I liked the Mist . I thought it was really cool. I wish the monsters played a bigger part in it though.

You’ve all heard my rant on this topic, so I’m just reminding you: Halloween cookies are in all ways superior to regular cookies and other holiday cookies. It’s all the evil baked in.

Chestnuts roasted by Special K @ 09/06/2009 3:14 AM

Hey an SNT! I haven’t been to one of these for a while! Nothing much to report, really. It’s just my first September as a graduate, where I can finally wake up and say “Oh, that’s right, I don’t have to go to school today!”

Chestnuts roasted by Invader Norbert @ 09/06/2009 3:33 AM

@Norb You get to say “Oh, yeah, I need to find a job to pay my student loans” instead, right?

Chestnuts roasted by Guise @ 09/06/2009 4:40 AM

I’m looking forward to the Halloween cookie dough itself right now. It’s more satisfying to eat a circle of dough colored like a pumpkin than one that’s just… Well, normal.

Chestnuts roasted by Dead Red. @ 09/06/2009 4:44 AM

This article reminds me of those free matches we would watch before a WWF Pay Per View to encourage people to buy the PPV at the last minute. You know, the ones that were inside the upper left hand corner, while on the right there was the name of the PPV, phone number, with the price, and the bottom part of the screen was the tv guide channel. That’s how I am taking this article as, a freebie before the Halloween Countdown. OK, que in the Clash of the Champions theme.

Speaking of which, if you have Comcast (I’m sorry) On-Demand, the WWE 24/7 stuff is free right now, including a Clash. Which makes us suckers paying for it… suckers.

Chestnuts roasted by Andy @ 09/06/2009 5:56 AM

@ Andy. What’s funny is that I haven’t watched anything related to modern WWE in the last 7 years, mainly due to the same reasons like everybody elses. The only thing I have kept track have been the Classics Action Figures (I got Haku (with Crown =D), The Berzerker, Demolition, Psycho Sid, and Al Snow). Plus being a sucker definitely fits one of the reasons why I stopped watching WWE, I got sick and tired of being suckered into buying something from WWE. Like the Mick Foley DVD set, I bought the one with 2 dvds, but later they released the one with 3 dvds, that aggravated me to no ends.

@Matt: I watched “The Mist” after reading about it here some time ago. I feel pretty much the same like you regarding the ending. Reminds me of 70′s horror movies with genuine non-happy ends, none of that “The killer is dead and all is well, oh wait, he’s still alive” stuff.

Chestnuts roasted by Kapprika @ 09/06/2009 6:38 AM

Ah we are inching towards the most glorious time of the year. I think right around the launch of Matt’s countdown is when I’ll start the horror movie marathon all he way to Halloween. Good to have you back Matt.

I have finally started my own Halloween mood table.

Let the madness begin!

Chestnuts roasted by PlantMonster @ 09/06/2009 11:05 AM

Glad you’re back, Matt. :] I’m looking forward to Halloween Countdown even if you don’t post every single day– which is harder than people think it is. I have a hard enough time posting every day for one week, much less for a month.

Maybe I should do a Halloween mood table this year…

Chestnuts roasted by Annette @ 09/06/2009 11:24 AM

Awesome! Glad you’re back, Matt. Has anyone seen any Halloween cereals yet? Last year I couldn’t even find Count Chocula, let alone Boo Berry or (what I fear are dead) Spooky Marshmallow Froot Loops. Any luck?

As a sidenote, though, our Target has an audio cd called something like “Spooky Sounds of Count Chocula’s Castle” and I think it’s just him and the two buddies having a Halloween mega party. It’s $9.99 but may be worth checking out. Happy beginning of the season everyone!!

Chestnuts roasted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 09/06/2009 11:43 AM

I think The Mist has one of the best endings to a horror movie I’ve seen in a long time, much better than the one in the story, although I loved the story too. I’d like to see The Long Walk developed into a movie as well. That’s another one of my faves by King.

Long live the Halloween mood table!
