09/05/2009: Halloween Chips Ahoy!

No, this post isn’t meant to signal the start of this year’s Halloween Countdown — in whatever form it may take. Rather, I just have a primal need to write about new editions of Chips Ahoy! cookies the moment they hit the shelves.

For the first time in history, Nabisco has graced the Chips Ahoy! brand with its very own special Halloween edition. Though pessimists have already marked this as the absolute zenith of humanity and lamented that we have nowhere to go but down, we must remind ourselves to live in the moment and enjoy this.

I’ll get to the actual edibles in a second, because as we all know, Halloween editions of anything are really judged by their packages. Aside from the various bits of spooky decorations all over the bag, the key element is the official Chips Ahoy! mascot (that anthropomorphic cookie from the commercials), dressed as Dracula, complete with what appears to be a cape made entirely out of chocolate.

In this guise, the Chips Ahoy! mascot is a sight that I can fixate upon for 15-20 minutes without the slightest distraction. It’s way too early in the season for me to soapbox your ass with eight paragraphs about what makes Halloween great, but if I can summarize in six syllables: DRACULA THE COOKIE.

While a lesser brand would’ve seen fit to modify its packaging and call it a dark and scary night, there’s actually more to these Halloween Chips Ahoy! cookies than that. In tribute to Satan, these special exclusive limited edition snacks arrive not just with the everyday chocolate chips, but also with a smattering of crushed up orange M&M’s. (Well, they’re not M&M’s…but they’re M&M’s.)

I can’t say that the addition of mock M&M’s is an improvement to the flavor of original Chips Ahoy! cookies, but it isn’t the ruination of it either. Truth be told, you’re really only buying these because DRACULA THE COOKIE is on the package. Is that not enough?

Happy SNT. For those curious, yes, I will be doing the Halloween Countdown. I will not miss the opportunity to reclaim my rightful virtual throne by way of easy scribblings about things with werewolf heads. But I wouldn’t dare promise that I’ll be writing everyday, because I doubt I will, and it’s not like you’d believe it, anyway. Nevertheless, expect the official start date to be around the time suggested by my six-year-old Shrunken Apple Head. And there will probably be a few other mini-posts like this on our way there. :)

I never lie when I tag out with a smiley face, btw.

Oh, and the Halloween Jukebox is up. I’d link you to it, but it isn’t hard to find. I think you’ll enjoy it more if you go through the rewarding experience of locating it yourself. Good luck hunting!

YES YES YES YES!!! I could not possibly be more excited. Thanks, Matt!

You’re welcome Matt, I’m glad I could contribute to a blog. By the way my neighborhood has it’s first house decorated for Halloween, before Labor Day no less.

Third!!! My earliest ever!!!

Yes! A Halloween countdown is confirmed! Christmas has come early…uh, I mean Halloween.

Ghosted by Berdo @ 09/05/2009 10:07 PM EDT

I’ll definitely have to check these out…I’ve been summer’d out…autumn candles, pumpkin beer, football, and rain are all very welcome.

I’ve spent the past few months lurking about and ignoring the trolls. I just wanted to say thanks in advance for however much Halloween Countdown you are able to do. It’s one of the highlights of my Halloween season!!!

I am loving XE going active again + Halloween just around the corner!

Ghosted by MikeyD @ 09/05/2009 10:14 PM EDT

I’m not sure where the underscore in my name came from on the last post, but oh well…

Ghosted by The Boogeyman @ 09/05/2009 10:15 PM EDT

This is really THE thing that makes my Halloween season. That’s kind of sad, but kind of great at the same time.

Ghosted by Vincent @ 09/05/2009 10:15 PM EDT

I didn’t even have time to get fully acquainted with the shrunken head post.

Ghosted by Tryclyde @ 09/05/2009 10:21 PM EDT

i’ve been conimg to this site 4 5 yrs. the ape post was the longest between posts i’ve ever seen. glad your not dead matt.

Ghosted by naturekid420 @ 09/05/2009 10:22 PM EDT

Same here, Vincent. Going Halloween shopping sometime this week. The yard last year was decent, but I’m hoping to make this year insane. Zombies and whatnot everywhere.

Speaking of which, what do you guys do to your yards?

I wish Matt would speak more personally. All this time and no explanation of his absence. It’s okay to talk about personal things in the blog, Matt.

Ghosted by Lex @ 09/05/2009 10:25 PM EDT

Man, what with Halloween in the air already, I’ve gotta get crackin’ on my Marty McFly costume…

Ghosted by Jerrod @ 09/05/2009 10:27 PM EDT

BTW, I love the packaging of the cookies. I really like the orange color against the town and the bats. Is that supposed to be Salem? Transylvania? It’s awesome. I feel nine years old again just looking at it.

Ghosted by Berdo @ 09/05/2009 10:28 PM EDT

Welcome back, Matt. No fussing at you, no madness for your absence… not my place. I’m sure you were and are busy. I’m just glad you’re back. It’s not Halloween without you.

Ghosted by Andy @ 09/05/2009 10:37 PM EDT

Jerrod

Which Marty are you doing? (what film?)

And happy SNT people! I needed it, I’ve been bummed today about a number of things (which I won’t go into at the moment). I’m spending he remainder of the evening playing NES and checking out the SNT thread in between games….

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 09/05/2009 10:40 PM EDT

SNT! SNT! SNT!

School starts here next Tuesday. Gotta love that. Maybe I’ll try and find these for my son’s lunches, but I like baking them better. I tend to eat more of the home made variety.

Ghosted by kb @ 09/05/2009 10:46 PM EDT

I’m happy to hear there will be a countdown this year and think you should post every day.

Ghosted by mark @ 09/05/2009 10:47 PM EDT

For the win. Happy SNT!

Little cookie vampire teeth! I must have these.

How’s everybody? BTW thanks for the kind wishes in the last thread. My teeth were getting me today so I took a double dose of drugs and it’s finally made a difference.

I so want to make an ice cream sandwich with those cookies.

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 09/05/2009 11:01 PM EDT

Well, whatever form the Halloween Countdown takes, it’s better than a barren wasteland. I’ve been reading this site for nearly eight years now, and that is one of my favorite features. I still have Ghastly Grandpa hanging up in my bedroom.

Ghosted by Frostor @ 09/05/2009 11:01 PM EDT

Seems like its just the regular chips ahoy M&M cookies but with only orange m&ms. Which is not a bad thing, I loved them. Too bad since moving to Mexico I haven’t been able to have any of them or any of the chunky chips ahoy… Only regular boring Chips ahoy here.

They used to be a part of my regular diet, when I get back t the states I’ll make sure to buy plenty of boxes to make up for the years I may not have any.

Ghosted by sdp @ 09/05/2009 11:01 PM EDT

Alright another new post! And so soon too! :) Your correct about Halloween themed food. It’s mostly about the packaging for most people . Once again. Happy SNT ya’ll.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 09/05/2009 11:02 PM EDT

You slap a cape on any food of beverage in the name of Halloween and I’m there. You just won me over, Chips Ahoy! Good show.

Jerrod!: That is literally one of the best Halloween costumes I’ve never heard of in my life. And yeah, like Cameron T. said, I want to know which movie and which outfit you’re going with. Classic jean jacket and high tops? Plutonium outfit? What accessories will you have? Guitar? Skateboard? Hoverboard? We need answers, man!

That’s it. Matt’s officially back. There’s stuff in stores. You got cookies running around dressed like vampires. I’m calling this the official start of my Halloween season. The decorations are going out on the yard tomorrow.

So say we all.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 09/05/2009 11:05 PM EDT

Would love to wash these cookies down with a can of Pitch Black II.

I finally got around to getting that 50 Horror Classics DVD @ Best Buy, the 1960’s Peanuts Collection, and a Cinema of Fear Jason Vorhees figure. Not a bad Saturday afternoon.

Matt, I’d love to see another art contest or two this year. What do you guys think?

Ghosted by Ricky @ 09/05/2009 11:06 PM EDT

I’m more of a lurker than a member of this “community,” but I just had to join in the excitement of a new XE post. I missed your writing while you were gone, and I’m thankful just to see you posting again, however much/often it may be. Hooray for XE, where we can all come together to celebrate the goofy things that make the day or season a little more special.

WOOHOOO!!!! Just got home to see a new post! SNT!!!!!!!

Ghosted by das.hoot @ 09/05/2009 11:47 PM EDT

Well….I’m officially a college student at the age of 31.

I am just doing some liberal arts courses so I can take Spanish classes. Like you can’t get a pell grant JUST for taking one class. So I picked(rather I was forced into)remedial intro to elementary algebra…I forgot alot of it since highschool, but I’m confident that within a week or so I will be doing awesome.

I also have sociology which starts on Wednesday and the other classes won’t start til October.

Hoping to take a spanish in the medical office course elective spring semester.

Money I get back from the Pell grant, I’m gonna use to pay for continuing education classes in Medical Transcription.

Happy SNT folks!

These look delicious.

And kb, homemade..something like this? That would just be too damn good.

Ghosted by Tutsuro @ 09/05/2009 11:58 PM EDT

Yay! New, real post!

Happy SNT! It’s midnight and I’ve been up since I was rudely awakened by work calling me at 6am to come in early. I’m going to bed.

Ghosted by MysteryD8 @ 09/06/2009 12:00 AM EDT

Seriously, you’re not going to say ANYTHING about your long hiatus?
I know you don’t owe anyone anything, but it’s a little weird to just all of a sudden start talking about a cookie after how many months.

Ghosted by Kid Nicky @ 09/06/2009 12:03 AM EDT

I thought it was perfectly natural. :(

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/06/2009 12:06 AM EDT

OOh,I almost forgot,at just about the time you were posting this,my GF and I were discussing how it sucked that the site died, and we were saying how much we hoped you would at least put the jukebox back up.
Then I came back on,fully expecting to see the same group of shut-ins endlessly discussing their mealtime and naptime habits, when lo and behold it’s a Halloween miracle!

Ghosted by Kid Nicky @ 09/06/2009 12:09 AM EDT

Tutsuro-
ooh, I find some Halloween M & M’s and I’d have it made!

Ghosted by kb @ 09/06/2009 12:10 AM EDT

Hurray for Matt! Hurray for Halloween! Hurray for Halloween Chips Ahoy!

… now to open my very own bag….

OW! DAMMIT! MY COOKIE BIT ME!!! CURSE YOU, NABISCO!!!!

i just saw these cookies tonight at stop&shop! i was going to buy them but i bought “halloween” oreos instead. stoked for the countdown. stoked for halloween. fall is almost here guys! i can already smell it!

Ghosted by Andrew @ 09/06/2009 12:18 AM EDT

I wish I lived in the town on that cookie package.

I also wish I could click “hide” on some people like I can on facebook.

@Ricky–I’m with you, I hope there’s another art contest too, those are always fun, especially when we get video submissions like guise dancing in a hockey mask…

Ghosted by Amy @ 09/06/2009 12:26 AM EDT

I knew there was something still missing from all my Halloween excitement, and it is now complete! We have confirmation of the Halloween countdown and it is about to get fun again! Happy SNT everyone!

Ghosted by SLICK316 @ 09/06/2009 12:33 AM EDT

I picked up a Jason DVD yesterday. It’s a documentary about the history and legacy of ole hockey puck. It has a bunch of extras too. Think I’ll pop it in tonight.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 09/06/2009 12:37 AM EDT

I love your posts Matt. I am well, thank you for hoping. Are you planning on dressing up for Halloween? I’m going with the Roman centurion costume this year.

Ghosted by Wheels @ 09/06/2009 12:39 AM EDT

Matt…Yup, actually I’d agree, perfectly Natural, perfectly Matt, perfectly X-E :P It’s why we love you! heheh

Glad to hear the Halloween countdown will be on (in whatever form!). It’s funny, Halloween’s not as crazy big here in London (some costume stuff, but nowhere near the level as it is in Canada/US).

However, last year my girlfriend saw how excited I was getting thanks to XE’s Halloween, so she got me a little plastic Halloween pumpkin that has been sitting on my desk ever since!

So, in a roundabout way, thanks for letting us start our own little mini-halloween-tradition too!

Ghosted by divechaz @ 09/06/2009 12:39 AM EDT

Watching Tim Burton’s version of “Sleepy Hallow” right now. It reminded me of another little factoid about the isle of Staten. I’m not sure if Matt ever wrote about this. Ichabod Crane, the character was an amalgamation of two real people Jesse Merwin of Kinderhook and Colonel Ichabod Crane. Colonel Crane is buried on Staten Island. I love it when legend and reality meet.

Ghosted by Shawn @ 09/06/2009 12:42 AM EDT

Ultraman: Is it the “His Name is Jason” video? I watched it a month or so ago. Not to bad, wasn’t quite what i hoped it would be but anything with Jason or Freddy is good in my opinion! I may have to break out one of the Friday the 13th movies tonight as well.

Ghosted by SLICK316 @ 09/06/2009 12:44 AM EDT

kb Do they actually have those? Because black and orange seem like they would be very tasty right now.

And I like the vibe in here right now. Happy SNT!

Ghosted by Tutsuro @ 09/06/2009 12:52 AM EDT

Just watched The Mist again. What a fucked up movie.

Matt, glad to see you’re about. Can’t wait to see what’s in store for the Halloween countdown, in whatever form it takes.

Saw these cookies today as well. I’m going to have to try them.

Ghosted by Darth Galvatron @ 09/06/2009 1:05 AM EDT

Goddamnit, I was SO super fucking pissed about 10 minutes ago – it had to do with my “internet banking” so I said “Fuck it!” and gave up, till I can actually talk to a human being about it… Anyhow, I clicked around in my toolbar and, lo and behold: Vampire Cookie. That is an instant smile from me. :) Thanks for making me un-pissed before I go to bed, Matt.

PS – there are some really annoying pop ups on Firefox that appear whenever you click anywhere on the page! Grr!

Vampire cookie, vampire cookie, vampire cookie :) Maybe this should be a meditation chant for me, or something.

Ghosted by Ryane @ 09/06/2009 1:08 AM EDT

Darth: I was talking with a guy from work about The Mist the other day, what a jacked up ending to a movie. Neither one of us could come up with the words to describe that movie.

Ghosted by SLICK316 @ 09/06/2009 1:16 AM EDT

I wrote about The Mist before, and could kind of go for seeing it again. So underrated.

Ghosted by Matt @ 09/06/2009 1:22 AM EDT

SLICK316:Yeah that’s the one. I saw it on a shelf with the $10 DVDs. It was a Jason DVD that I didn’t have, that cost $10. Resistance was futile. lol
