Halloween Chips Ahoy!

UPDATE: Now you can relive X-E's 2009 Halloween Countdown more easily than ever -- and in it's original design! On the top of the right-side column of every page herein, you'll see a master guide linking to all of 2009's Countdown articles! After you're done sifting through those, you can navigate to other X-E Halloween Countdowns. Enjoy!

No, this post isn't meant to signal the start of this year's Halloween Countdown -- in whatever form it may take. Rather, I just have a primal need to write about new editions of Chips Ahoy! cookies the moment they hit the shelves.

For the first time in history, Nabisco has graced the Chips Ahoy! brand with its very own special Halloween edition. Though pessimists have already marked this as the absolute zenith of humanity and lamented that we have nowhere to go but down, we must remind ourselves to live in the moment and enjoy this.

I'll get to the actual edibles in a second, because as we all know, Halloween editions of anything are really judged by their packages. Aside from the various bits of spooky decorations all over the bag, the key element is the official Chips Ahoy! mascot (that anthropomorphic cookie from the commercials), dressed as Dracula, complete with what appears to be a cape made entirely out of chocolate.

In this guise, the Chips Ahoy! mascot is a sight that I can fixate upon for 15-20 minutes without the slightest distraction. It's way too early in the season for me to soapbox your ass with eight paragraphs about what makes Halloween great, but if I can summarize in six syllables: DRACULA THE COOKIE.

While a lesser brand would've seen fit to modify its packaging and call it a dark and scary night, there's actually more to these Halloween Chips Ahoy! cookies than that. In tribute to Satan, these special exclusive limited edition snacks arrive not just with the everyday chocolate chips, but also with a smattering of crushed up orange M&M's. (Well, they're not M&M's...but they're M&M's.)

I can't say that the addition of mock M&M's is an improvement to the flavor of original Chips Ahoy! cookies, but it isn't the ruination of it either. Truth be told, you're really only buying these because DRACULA THE COOKIE is on the package. Is that not enough?

Happy SNT. For those curious, yes, I will be doing the Halloween Countdown. I will not miss the opportunity to reclaim my rightful virtual throne by way of easy scribblings about things with werewolf heads. But I wouldn't dare promise that I'll be writing everyday, because I doubt I will, and it's not like you'd believe it, anyway. Nevertheless, expect the official start date to be around the time suggested by my six-year-old Shrunken Apple Head. And there will probably be a few other mini-posts like this on our way there. :)

I never lie when I tag out with a smiley face, btw.

Oh, and the Halloween Jukebox is up. I'd link you to it, but it isn't hard to find. I think you'll enjoy it more if you go through the rewarding experience of locating it yourself. Good luck hunting!

Speakin of Jones, I’m gonna try em this year. I saw em last year at my local big lots, but decided against gettin em. I regret that decision. They’ll probably end up tasting like crap but I don’t care, I’m an X-Er.

The Halloween/pumpkin food I can’t wait to get my hands on are those pumpkin cookies shaped like jack-o-lanterns from Little Debbie. AWESOME!

Thanks Kid Nicky, I knew he had a name, I just couldn’t remember it.

I tried eating some gummy candies from 2006 this evening–it’s been an interesting night.

My favorite Chip Ahoy! variety are the Candy Blasts. As a kid I used to dip original Chips Ahoy! in a big glass of milk while watching ‘toons. Now I never, ever drink milk. I still watch the ‘toons, though..

I hate that Jones has gone to an uncreative soda company now. Remember when there was novelty in brussle sprout soda? I do. And now they just repeat last years line for Halloween. Maybe they will have Spoookiwi, though.

The 2007 Halloween is on Showtime2 right now. Eastern time, at least.

As some of you may remember from the Ape thread, I hate any and all pumpkin flavored foods. Yesterday I found some really good Carmel Apple Candy Corn at GFS though.

One of the things I’m asking for for Christmas this year is to hang out with Mystie for a few days. I’d love to ride shotgun in that surreal thing that is her daily life.

kb: I’ll see what I can do. I hope, with enough effort on my part, that we can get past this indiscretion.

KING JLA: Yeah, Little Debbie. I loves me some o’ the Debbie.

Review the World: I hate milk. Always have. I won’t touch the stuff.

I just got back a little while ago from The Dollar General store. I haven’t been to a Target or A.C. Moore yet, so that was my first official viewing of Halloween merchandise for the season. I’m so glad it’s out there. All they had was half an isle of bowls, bags, skeleton lights, and a little makeup…oh, and some masks, including a really cheap looking hockey one. All this talk of novelty snacks has got me just as excited for it as I am for the decorations and such. Can’t wait to get my own bag of Halloween Chips Ahoy and spooky Oreos.

I’ll never understand the Dollar General’s otherwise “organization” of their merchandise. I was on another isle that contained picture frames, Transformers toys, angel statues, adult diapers, and laundry detergent. Wtf?

ULTRAMAN: Yes! Night of the Demons! Love it. Sadly, that’s another one that’s also in development to be remade/re-imagined/re-whatevered.

@Cameron and DJ D:

My goal is to go as Marty from the first movie, jean jacket/puffy vest/white grid shirt. I haven’t been very successful in finding anything so far, but I’ve still got alot more thrift stores to hit…

I love that the shrunken head still exists.

The Rob Zombie Halloween remake wasn’t too good. Only thing I could find on TV tonight as horrors go though.

I wonder why they are called Chips AHOY! when there is never a reference to boating, sailors, or pirates. Ahoy MATEY!

Chestnuts roasted by Baker @ 09/07/2009 2:23 AM

My wife and I eat a generic version of Lucky Charms called Marshmallow Mateys, again a weird pirate reference.

DJ D, your description of Dollar General reminds me of the grocery store in my podunk town. The guy that owns it also owns the hardware store, but before the hardware store was built, the grocery store carried the hardware stuff. My hand to God, at the end of the bread aisle were big rolls of chains like you see at Home Depot or Lowe’s. There were other odd pairings, but I can’t remember what they were.

Hi Tokka. :)

(Testing to make sure I didn’t break the comments.)

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 09/07/2009 10:30 PM

If you look closely, don’t the orange candy shells of the M&M’s resemble the slits of some lizard like eyes?

Chestnuts roasted by Alexander @ 09/08/2009 3:05 PM

they’re only M&M bits?! I thought/hoped they were Jaffas.

Chestnuts roasted by Cleavy @ 09/09/2009 5:48 AM

Chips Ahoy are quite awesome and a Halloween version is even better. At least we just get black and orange chocolate chips, it’s not like those gross sugary orange filled Oreos.
