06/11/2009: George’s New Digs.

X-E is the ultimate nostalgia website. Anyway, here’s more stuff about my pet crab.

It cost 85 bucks to provide George with an adequate home, and I’m not exaggerating in the slightest. (Though I do admit to buying more decorations than were feasible to fit in his tank, so let’s be fair and say 70 bucks. It’s still an awful lot of money to spend on such a tiny crab.)

It all went down yesterday night. I was a man obsessed. While at work, I actually sketched out what I wanted the tank to look like, and because I know that sounds made-up, I snapped a pic of the sketch with my phone’s shitty camera. It sounds mundane, but it was actually mindblowing action.

We shopped at the same Petland where George was purchased, and the staff kept trying to tell me that the tank he came with was totally fine. Part of me wondered why they were trying to talk us out of spending more money, but it was pretty clear that George needed more than a dinner plate covered in rocks and water to enjoy life. Really, if giant aliens from a distant galaxy scooped me up and kept me in a tank, I’d hope for more than rocks and water.

Researching moon crab habitats is frustrating. Google didn’t give me a lot of options, and every new site I came across seemed to contradict the previous. Caring for a moon crab can’t be that subjective, can it? I’m sure there’s a correct way to go about it, but there’s no way to tell which “experts” are on the up and up, and which “experts” are just lameass griefers who get strangers to kill their pet crabs for kicks.

I decided on a middle ground, and built George’s home to a hodgepodge of specifications set forth by at least a dozen online strangers who so generously took the time to write random guides on keeping crabs happy.

First up, the floor layer isn’t actually sand, but rather a very fine gravel made to look like it. Real sand would’ve been a better choice, but Petland had none for sale. (I love George, but I’m not going to two stores for him.) Near the back of the tank is George’s coconut hut, where he’s free to map out his wayward crab schemes in total privacy.

Water is important, even for land crabs. Aside from keeping the sand moist and chewy, I’ve also provided George with a pool. The pool isn’t filled with regular water, but rather with Petland’s special “hermit crab water.” George isn’t a hermit crab, but I must assume that hermit crab water is better for him than people water. PS, if you think shit like Dasani is expensive, get a load of hermit crab water: $5 for an eight ounce bottle.

There’s also a little bit of fencing held up by suction cups, so George can give into his primal instincts and climb around. He may be disappointed to learn that the fence doesn’t actually lead anywhere, but truth be told, this probably isn’t an issue…because George does not move at all. He is a stationary crab.

I have to admit, I’m a little concerned. George hasn’t really moved since we got him. I mean, he has, but only when I’ve made it impossible for him not to do so. He hasn’t eaten, either. And it can’t be that I’m not feeding him the right foods, because I’ve tried feeding him every possible type of food, except maybe grapes.

When I can encourage George to move, he does it well enough. His legs are in working order. (Except for the one that’s missing, which we just noticed tonight.) George has spent the past 48 hours doing about as much as a dead crab would do, and I’m guessing that this isn’t optimum.

Some of the sites on moon crabs claim that they’re “very active,” and yeah, there are even several YouTube videos that seem to purport this claim. Maybe he just needs more time to adjust?

Then again, it’s possible that this is just how George is. He seems relatively healthy, except for the missing leg. Maybe he’s just a laid back, take-it-as-it-comes kind of crab? Bleh, this is obviously my punishment for naming him after the most passive character in Gremlins 2.

MI CRO WAF

Enjoy your new Craborama, George. Please do tricks for me tomorrow?

I just watched Ghostbusters II for the first time on DVD tonight. It’s not quite as fresh as the first one, but the friendship and comraderie among the leads really carries it, along with an overall sense of fun. The new special effects by ILM aren’t bad, either.

Hey all….some reason I didn’t see this thread til this morning.

I have been researching hermit crabs….thinking about going to Petco today.

Welcome to the jungle, Knox! We’ve got fun and games.

Congratulations on quitting smoking, Razzy the Cat! Filthy habit, that, and your life will be greatly enriched for giving them up.

trajeal, I’m glad you like my kitty babies! Let’s see, we had Millie for about five years, I suppose. I just uploaded a couple pictures of Delilah. Most folks ’round here have heard my near-death story, but here you go: I had an aortic dissection in October of 2006 and in the process of repairing it, I had a mild stroke and my kidneys quit working. But, thanks to the goodness of God, the stroke didn’t paralyze me (though my left hand is still gimpy) and my kidneys are working again. I spent 13 months in the hospital, but I’m home now. After so long in the hospital, my legs are still really weak, so I can’t walk without a walker (and only short distances) and I’m in a wheelchair when we go out, but I’m just thankful to be alive! Finally, in regards to your vampire question: if I understand “real” vampires (not those fake emo sparkly ones), the AIDS wouldn’t hurt ‘em…they’re dead, you know? I’m guessing heroin wouldn’t faze them either.

King JLA, that was pretty funny, but all I could think was, “Aww, poor cute kitties!”

Matt fix your website! I cant get into the updates section for days at a time and rhen all of a sudden it will be fixed. Anybody else having this problem?

Ghosted by Justin @ 06/13/2009 11:52 AM EDT

Justin: My assumption would be that you were previously banned for mass tomfoolery in the comments, but shoot me an e-mail and I’ll see if that’s the reason?

GEORGE UPDATE: The crab has moved! Plenty! After a rocky start, George has now been spotted walking, eating, and even darting all the way across his tank to do a cannonball into his crab pool. Things are looking up.

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/13/2009 12:40 PM EDT

I probably was banned, but I haven’t engaged in tomfoolery for a couple months but the bans still seem to be coming at me at random times.

If George has found his will to live, it’s time to make a video.

Justin: E-mail me with your IP addy so I can check it against the system? If I see any matches, I’ll remove them. :)

i think George just needs time to adjust… my frog was a stationary frog too until he got used to me.

Ghosted by Abi @ 06/13/2009 1:39 PM EDT

Cheers for George! I’m so relieved, I honestly started getting really concerned about the fact that Petland was discouraging you from spending more cash, since they might know something you didn’t.

I got my pups from responsible breeders and not puppy mills, and I paid a premium for it. I still feel guilty sometimes because of all the shelter animals out there, especially since word came yesterday that to save a tiny percentage from the state budget they are cutting down from 6 to 3 days before they start putting pets to sleep. Trying to convince my mom we could use another kitty…

Congrats, Razzy! One of the toughest things you can do, in my humble opinion. If you can beat the first month, you’re gravy. Best of luck!

Hi Knox!

I’m glad George is finally moving about! I was beginning to think that maybe George was a dud.

But, perhaps it’s normal for crabs to remain docile until they grow more accustomed to their surroundings. That sounds like something that could be true, but, hey, what do I know? Other than you, Matt, the only other person I ever knew who had crabs was this girl named Tricia. However, her crabs weren’t pets – and she had to take medication and use a special comb to get rid of them.

Thanks for the words of welcome, PlantMonster, Teddy Ray, and squee4242!

It’s George the Hallowe’en Moon Crab! Be the first on your block to own one!

GEORGE LIVES! Yay! This is the most exciting thing to happen in my life this weekend.

Actually, I’m having a nice, lazy Saturday of doing basically nothing. The next two weekends are going to be pretty busy, so I deserve it.

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 06/13/2009 3:59 PM EDT

I want a moon crab. There’s actually a guy that posted a free tank on Craigslist a couple hours ago right near me but it’s raining out and I’m lazy.

We’ll see if I have room for tiny crustaceans after I move into my new place.

Ghosted by Mystie @ 06/13/2009 4:01 PM EDT

Yay, I’m so glad there are other people on the blog! Now I don’t feel like as much of a bum as I did.

By the way, if you have some time to kill, check out this game I’m playing right now. It’s pretty addictive. Well, as I think about it, because I’m new to posting on the blogs here, is it okay to post external links? I don’t want to commit a faux pas on my first weekend actually participating on the blogs.

I’m just going to throw caution to the wind and post the link. http://www.addictinggames.com/bustinblocks.html

It’s pretty fun!

Nice little setup you have there Matt!

Yeah, I think a few people already mentioned it above, but your crab is a nocturnal one. So you may have better lucky trying to catch him doing stuff late at night when all other crabs have gone to bed.

Yay George is ok. I figured he was just gettin used to his tank. Also, welcome Knox. :) Your gonna have fun here.

Thanks, Ultra. I’ve been reading the site for years, so I figured I’d throw my support behind it and supply as much traffic as I can!

“Do not taunt Moon Crab.” – kingklash Now I want some Gravy Clear and Colon Blow sprinkled onto my cheeseburger, cheeseburger.

Knox, I post links on this blog all the time, so if it’s not allowed, no one’s told me so yet.

Teddy Ray, wow, what an experience. Thirteen months is such a long time to be in the hospital. You must have been bored out of your mind. Thank God everything is up and running again, so to speak. Do you have to do physical therapy?
Candy is doing much better today. Yesterday she was still so weak, but after a good night’s rest in her own bed, she’s feeling much better. She even chased a trapped moth for a few seconds this morning. :) They put her on liquid antibiotics (Clavamox), which I’m glad for, since I’d heard that cats fight the pills b/c they taste bad. She doesn’t seem to mind this stuff too much.

Matt, three cheers for George! He’s scuttling all over the place now. I wonder if he feels the need to map out his location before feeling comfortable w/ full tilt running. Have you thought about getting him a girlfriend?

Ghosted by trajeal @ 06/13/2009 5:32 PM EDT

Awesome…first time i’ve looked at this site in about 6 months and there’s a blog entry about a moon crab named George :) What’s next? A martian lobster named Steve? As always Matt your site never ceases to entertain me.

Ghosted by phunqsauce @ 06/13/2009 6:55 PM EDT

My first dog was named “George”. Glad to see someone keeping the tradition alive (albeit in crab form). Three cheers for George!

P.S., isn’t “scuttle” an awesome word to describe how something moves? I mean, seriously, it doesn’t get better than that. I think I’m gonna scuttle over to the kitchen and grab a bottle of water.

Hey Matt, any chance of you bringing back full fledged message boards?

Ghosted by SuperRecoome @ 06/13/2009 7:14 PM EDT

Nice job, Matt. George is probably living better than half the blog regulars. I hope you have more luck with him than my sisters and I did with the many hermit crabs we’d pick up in the gift shops in Cape May and on the boardwalk in Wildwood. (Then again, we usually couldn’t afford to spend more than 80 cents on those critters, much less 80 bucks.)

Ghosted by starwenn @ 06/13/2009 9:18 PM EDT

All my best to George. I thought he was cute enough to begin with but now that I realize he’s named after a Gremlin I just adore him.

May you catch em’ All. Happy Saturday night to all!

Happy SNT ya’ll!!! :D Hope yur havin a goodun. I like that little tiki statue in Georges tank. Maybe you could get him a little beachball to play with? Then again, he’d probably pop it with his claws.

Happy SNT to all my pals! Just relaxing and enjoying my 3 months free internet

I signed up with Netzero last night, because now they have DSL, and ATT was giving me billing headaches. Hubby calls Netzero and asks about prices and such…gets a quote and says ,”we have to call ya back because we need to load the debit card.” CSR says …oh wait don’t hang up! we can give you 3 months for free…plus you can have it billed to the phone bill for 4 dollars a month extra!

So we were all excited of course and signed up. However, they tell us that we need to wait a week for the modem to ship. After hanging up, we realized that since we have a modem already, why not just go to the modem website and enter in our new netzero info. Ten seconds later we get 4 lights again and don’t have to wait a week to get service.

Happy SNT!

Glad to hear George is doing well.

I’ve spent the last eight hours painting my new house. We chose the colors based entirely on how badass the names of the paint colors were.

Now, Gin and Tonics and SNL.

Long live George!

My graduation party was today, and aside from gifts in the form of cash an a Buffalo Wild Wings gift card, I received that old Graduation staple “Oh, The Places You’ll Go.” I’m pretty sure you’re legally obligated to be given it once graduating something.

I’ve always wanted to get one of those! The local pet store gets them in every so often. I’ve had hermit crabs and fiddler crabs before, but never a moon crab yet. I’ll have to let Matt and George be my test subjects. Hopefully Matt gets him figured out, and then he can write the definitive web article on the care and feeding of Moon Crabs! My hermit crabs loved digging underground, I imagine George is the same way. Might want to make the fake sand level a little higher.

God Bless, and happy days to y’all!

trajeal, thirteen months in the hospital was a nightmare, but my wife was there almost everyday. Plus, I watched more TBS and FX than any human should and read a lot of books, so boredom wasn’t too much of an issue. And yes, I am doing physical therapy.

Glad George is showing signs of life!

Congratulations to all graduates! My 9th grade English teacher gave me Oh, the Places You’ll Go! for high school graduation. All throughout the book, she wrote these notes and annotations…it was one of my favorite gifts.
