You are all doomed. Why not surrender? We might let you live.

06/11/2009: George’s New Digs.

X-E is the ultimate nostalgia website. Anyway, here’s more stuff about my pet crab.

It cost 85 bucks to provide George with an adequate home, and I’m not exaggerating in the slightest. (Though I do admit to buying more decorations than were feasible to fit in his tank, so let’s be fair and say 70 bucks. It’s still an awful lot of money to spend on such a tiny crab.)

It all went down yesterday night. I was a man obsessed. While at work, I actually sketched out what I wanted the tank to look like, and because I know that sounds made-up, I snapped a pic of the sketch with my phone’s shitty camera. It sounds mundane, but it was actually mindblowing action.

We shopped at the same Petland where George was purchased, and the staff kept trying to tell me that the tank he came with was totally fine. Part of me wondered why they were trying to talk us out of spending more money, but it was pretty clear that George needed more than a dinner plate covered in rocks and water to enjoy life. Really, if giant aliens from a distant galaxy scooped me up and kept me in a tank, I’d hope for more than rocks and water.

Researching moon crab habitats is frustrating. Google didn’t give me a lot of options, and every new site I came across seemed to contradict the previous. Caring for a moon crab can’t be that subjective, can it? I’m sure there’s a correct way to go about it, but there’s no way to tell which “experts” are on the up and up, and which “experts” are just lameass griefers who get strangers to kill their pet crabs for kicks.

I decided on a middle ground, and built George’s home to a hodgepodge of specifications set forth by at least a dozen online strangers who so generously took the time to write random guides on keeping crabs happy.

First up, the floor layer isn’t actually sand, but rather a very fine gravel made to look like it. Real sand would’ve been a better choice, but Petland had none for sale. (I love George, but I’m not going to two stores for him.) Near the back of the tank is George’s coconut hut, where he’s free to map out his wayward crab schemes in total privacy.

Water is important, even for land crabs. Aside from keeping the sand moist and chewy, I’ve also provided George with a pool. The pool isn’t filled with regular water, but rather with Petland’s special “hermit crab water.” George isn’t a hermit crab, but I must assume that hermit crab water is better for him than people water. PS, if you think shit like Dasani is expensive, get a load of hermit crab water: $5 for an eight ounce bottle.

There’s also a little bit of fencing held up by suction cups, so George can give into his primal instincts and climb around. He may be disappointed to learn that the fence doesn’t actually lead anywhere, but truth be told, this probably isn’t an issue…because George does not move at all. He is a stationary crab.

I have to admit, I’m a little concerned. George hasn’t really moved since we got him. I mean, he has, but only when I’ve made it impossible for him not to do so. He hasn’t eaten, either. And it can’t be that I’m not feeding him the right foods, because I’ve tried feeding him every possible type of food, except maybe grapes.

When I can encourage George to move, he does it well enough. His legs are in working order. (Except for the one that’s missing, which we just noticed tonight.) George has spent the past 48 hours doing about as much as a dead crab would do, and I’m guessing that this isn’t optimum.

Some of the sites on moon crabs claim that they’re “very active,” and yeah, there are even several YouTube videos that seem to purport this claim. Maybe he just needs more time to adjust?

Then again, it’s possible that this is just how George is. He seems relatively healthy, except for the missing leg. Maybe he’s just a laid back, take-it-as-it-comes kind of crab? Bleh, this is obviously my punishment for naming him after the most passive character in Gremlins 2.

MI CRO WAF

Enjoy your new Craborama, George. Please do tricks for me tomorrow?

I saw UP today as well. I thought it was very good. There were some parts that try to pull at your heart strings. And funny parts too. Overall it was a very well done movie.

George is a crab of EXTRAORDINARY MAGNITUDE!

Went to a wedding this weekend and it was a rocking good time. Missed SNT.

So happy that George is alive!

Alright everyone, I’m back and I have my degree! Well, technically I have the scroll they give you until the real thing comes in the mail. But I also got a nifty plaque signifying that I am a “program award winner” (basically, it means that I did really well). Thanks for the well wishes, everyone. And congrats to all the other grads as well! SaintStryfe, a good friend of mine has a masters in Library Tech. Is that the same thing as Library Science?

Anyway, here is a link to the photos if you wanna see me in a robe: Steve’s Graduation on Myspace

With all this out of the way I now can focus on…another 4 years of college (I’m going for my Masters). Have a great day, all!

what on earth is that thing about lobsters? that has always bothered me.

WOW! You know you’ve made it when nostalgia/retro websites start writing articles about other nostalgia/retro websites:

Wow, didn’t realize we ever really truly REALLY got actual confirmation in the Photog thread about some of those wilder accusations. I haven’t haunted it since the glory days, but I didn’t remember conclusive proof, and Retro Junk didn’t site any actual sources besides the original thread.

clever name, do you mean the grocery store lobsters? They are just evidence of X-E’s longstanding endearment toward crustacean types :)

True Blood fans, if I’ve never watched and have only heard vague book spoilers, is it worth trying to get into now? Seems like there isn’t much on TV worth watching, lately. Besides the Finals, of course. Go Lakers 8)

If that Retrocrush article is completely true, then that means I’m 4 degrees separated from Nathan Bitner! He worked at Bungie with Eric Arroyo, who was the cousin of Dion Arroyo (deceased, sadly), who is in the same Fraternity as I am!

Small world.

Matt, so glad George is okay. YAY! Happy crabby hugs to all. Er, if it’s really that great of an idea to hug a crab… Plus, I also vote for video proof of his okay-ness. I think you need a tripod and to totally waste your video camera’s memory card space on constant George Footage so that when he does something cool, you can appease the masses by sharing it with us all.

Squee: You basically just described me re: True Blood before this weekend. My bestest friend has HBO, and for lack of anything better to do on Sat. we watched the first 4 eps. Then I went home and read the first book; I have the 1st three in an omnibus from when I belonged to the Science Fiction & Fantasy Book Club eons ago, but I’d never cracked the cover. I loved the show, and so did my (male) best friend. I think it was really well done; it definitely kept your interest and was funny and entertaining. I’m hooked now, for sure. Definitely give it a shot if you’re at all interested; I don’t think you’ll be disappointed.

Start throwing the tomatoes, now!

OMG, is Bitner really found? I’m almost sad. What enormous mystery will we XE-ers puzzle over now?

Duh…DOHOPOKI!!!

Bacon..choosing paint colors by the badassness of the name is a great idea! I just painted some accent walls in my basement DRAGON’s BREATH.

Hey Matt, any chance of a George video?

ATTN MATT: CRAB EXPERT HERE

Hey Matt, hopefully you can read this. I never had a moon crab before, but I had a heck load of alot of hermit crabs before, and I think you have too actually. I took your advice on an old hermit crab article you did and had bought 100’s and 100’s of hermit crabs every week but then I stopped after a 2 weeks, but anyways, enough of me trying to be funny:

I did insane amounts of research on hermit crabs, and moon crabs seem to be similar…

If moon crabs are anything like hermit crabs (and it seems like they are) the leg falling off is not a good sign. He’s stressed out, or she, who knows. What is George like at night? Moon crabs like hermit crabs could very well be nocturnal, and judging from his colors I’d say he is. I guess you would notice this or not though. I saw someone say to get him a friend. I agree. Moon crabs could like company just like the hermit crabs, hence the 100’s and 100’s of crabs every week till the day I die.
So, I’d keep an eye on him. Plus give him his space and dont hold him until he gets used to the smell of your hairy fingers when you put food into his tank.
He’s probably just scared of his new home and owner right now. A friend crab should make him feel welcome, but dont get a hermit crab, try to find another moon crab. Hermits can be pests to other creatures and bother them to death.
Other than that your love and care for George Crab is awesome, high fives all around. Everyone in the world should love crabs, they’re so cool with there eyes and claws and stuff.

On the issue of sand, I would have chosen Moon Sand for my moon crab.

Ghosted by Becca @ 06/15/2009 9:03 PM EDT

Awesome new moon crab. I don’t know if you knew that they’re also referred to as Halloween Moon Crabs (according to Wikipedia, but I’ve also seen conflicting information so I’m not 100%), but I’m assuming not because when would you pass up a chance to tie your new crab in with Halloween?

Anyways, I had some once. Two. And they both died. Very sad times in our house. Then we found out that they need both fresh and salt water and thought that that may be what killed them. We still aren’t sure. We were going to try to make a tank that was part land part water, instead of sand with a pool, but it kind of got pushed to the wayside. Plus we just couldn’t let the death count go any higher.

I now officially want the moon crab to marry me.

Staying wet and warm is the main thing he needs — is the tank too dry, or cold? His ilk come from the coasts of the rainforest afterall.

He’s so cute! And I have never ever said that about any crabs or crab-like creatures before, ever.

C’mon, George… you have TEH INTARWEBZ rooting for you!

Might I suggest as a friend, http://infinitehollywood.blogspot.com/2009/06/marvel-universe-red-hulk-figure-review.html

A Marvel Universe Red Hulk? You know he’d love it.

Hope the crab turns out fine.

I agree with some of the other posts. He needs to be kept warm and moist, much like microwave chicken nuggets – seriously why do they always come out stuck to the plate!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

I look up Moon crabs and theyre nocturnal, maybe thats why he doesnt move much?

So what happened? You’ve been silent now for two months. Did George die and you’re so overcome with grief you have ceased blogging? Think of the children!
