TONIGHT I DINE ON TURTLE SOUP EEHHHHEHHHHHH.

Happy SNT. I'm going to spend it trying to dust off the ancient X-E Summer Jukebox. This could take days, but maybe we'll get lucky? I mean, how am I going to bring the site back to its former glory without an assist from pirated Lionel Ritchie songs?

I don't know how I missed this, but Playmates has re-released several classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures in what's gotta be the best retro revival I've ever seen. If you're gonna bring back old toys and cater exclusively to nostalgists, this is the correct way to go about it. No lame upgrades, no new molds, no fancy celebratory packaging -- just give 'em to us the way they were.

I won't say that they're 100% identical to the figures we played with in the late '80s/early '90s, but they're 99.9% identical. What's more, Playmates only indulged in very slight packaging modification. Unless you look really close, they almost appear to be old store stock, yanked from the bowels of TRU's storage warehouse.

When toy companies do these retro revivals, they often hedge their bets. The toys are usually based on the classics we grew up with, but upgraded so that young kids without any rosy memories might still be interested. That strategy sucks. It pisses off old-schoolers who distinctly remember less points-of-articulation on their Nien Nunbs, and besides, it's not like kids are going to pick slightly-remodeled toys that made their mark 20 years ago over the advanced playthings made for today.

I don't know if Playmates is smart or just cheap, but like Solid Base almost said, this is how you do it.

I picked Bebop, Rocksteady and April. Partly because they justify my preference for perverted and obscene action figure adventures, but mainly because they were the only three figures Toys "R" Us had in stock.

Of the three, Bebop has long been my favorite, both as a toy and as a cartoon character. He had a certain...what can we say...relaxed approach? I've always admired his ability to be a raging mutant warthog who crept out of dimensional portals to shoot comically oversized guns, all while being pretty laid back about the whole thing.

Rocksteady was Rocksteady. I seem to remember it being slightly difficult to find his action figure during my youth. April was even tougher to find, but I'm guessing that had more to do with a more limited production run than anything else. (There's no way Playmates could do a TMNT collection and exclude April, but I doubt they made as many Aprils as, say, Donatellos. Though truthfully, I'm only speculating because it's fun to pluralize character names like that. Try it. "Donatellos." "Shredders." "Casey Jonseseses." Ahhhhh what a fulfilling Saturday night this is.)

Most remarkable is that Playmates kept the original "origin comic" on the card-back completely intact. The Turtles' have many origin stories depending on the era and medium, but I have a fondness for the card-back comic version's simplicity. Here, we learn that Shredder poured random green ooze down a sewer hole, hoping it would zap Hamato Yoshi (Splinter, in pre-rat form) dead.

It's a gem of a visual, really. Shredder, leader of the Foot Clan with fourteen trillion dollars' worth of alien technology at his beckon, chooses to dispatch of his ancient enemy by kneeling over a sewer hole and pouring a 12 ounce cup full of slime down into it. Something tells me that this idea wasn't birthed in a twelve-hour meeting of villainy's greatest minds.

Of course, Shredder has the wrong idea about his death slime. Instead of killing its targets, it mutates them and increases their strength and abilities tenfold. It really makes you wonder who seeded the idea of mutagen being a foolproof killer into Shredder's head. This was akin to kicking the soccer ball into your own team's goal, but even more awesome, because it's Shredder pouring mutagen and not soccer.

Overall Grade: :) :) :) :) :) and additional happy faces. Aside from the figures shown above, the re-release also includes all four Turtles, Splinter, Casey and at least three additional villains. No Rat King, though. Lack of Rat King is the main reason why I just texted God with "wave 2 turtles reissues plz thx."

PS, I'm in the market for one of those super-lightweight limited-capacity laptops. You know, the ones that weigh three pounds or less, and can do anything a regular computer does, until you try to do two things a regular computer can do at the same time? One of those. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. (No Macs, though. I love Macs, but not for writing.)

WOW.. it is like freaking X-mas in here… We get a 3 part dollar tree fest and now retro TMNT review. I had a feeling I should have logged on last night just in case… damn rookie mistakes! Anyway great article Matt! Keep up the good work.

Quick shout outs to Rev, Ultra and I’m sure Teddy will be on later to find out he missed SNT like me. LOL

P.S.
Matt: Anyway we could do a summer themed contest? Not for actual prizes just display the top 10 or so in a post like we did with the jack-o-lantern contest…everyone seemed to get a big kick out of it last year.

OK I’m done….

Did they ever make a figure for Irma, April’s geeky friend/co-worker (although I thought she was kind of cute)? I don’t remember ever seeing a figure for her. I don’t remember if she ever knew about the Turtles, though.

I’m probably not the only one who did this, but we had two cats at that time and we named them April and Irma because of the cartoon. Irma passed away a few years ago, but April is still living out in at my Aunt’s house.

Son of a…I went to bed early last night because I was tired and I missed frigging SNT. Bah.

I want one of these damn action figures so bad. I never asked for any Turtle toys when I was a kid because I was a girl and figured my parents would never buy them for me. So this is a chance to fulfill a childhood desire.

We were looking at the figures at Target and we found an April that had her head completely turned around backwards. The package was untampered with so it probably came from the factory that way. I dunno, I thought it was kind of amusing.

There’s a big part of me that loves how on what looks to be a non-alphabetized DVD shelf, The Texas Chainsaw Massacre is only three doors down from Duck Tales.

Have you guys seen the new Marvel Universe figures? I can’t help but get a Secret Wars vibe from them. Not sure if I can swallow 7 bucks a pop, but they are really rad.

That April figurine is awesome! :D I cannot believe I missed these when I was looking at the Star Wars figurines the other day.

You have no idea how happy the picture of the Ferris wheel on the main page is making me. It’s better than this- http://www.chicagotribune.com/news/local/chi-blagojevich-impeachment-removal,0,5791846.story

Yay! New SNT! Apparently it was posted right after I stopped posting on the last blog entry?

I’ve contemplating picking up some of those TMNT figures, but I still have all my originals somewhere. I never did have Bebob, Rocksteady, April, Shredder or a Foot Soldier though. Somehow I had just about every variation on the turtles though, including the terrible birthday-party ones. Geez.

I just saw the Star Trek ones on something. I wonder if I ever had those. The late turtles were around the time that I (temporarily) stopped buying toys.

Woohoo! Going to see Up after work!

Speaking of work, my lunch break is just about over. Time to go back.

Just got back from Wal-Mart where I got the Strawberry PB M&M’s. I also picked up the newest Mountain Dew GameFuel Flavors. Also some new PB Oreo Cakesters.

I also saw that they had Twilight SweetHearts (aka those hearts with messages on them).

I saw those TMNT reissues a while ago at Target, glad to see you post about them. Just seeing those on the pegs made me smile ear to ear. I can’t remember if I had Bebop and Rocksteady when I was a kid, but pretty sure I had April.

The did make an Irma Figure, but it was late in the run and pretty shitty. They had a “Toon” series with other TV show characters too like Vernon…

I really want to get myself I Mikey. I’m still bitter about not getting any TMNT action figures as a child. Just b/c I was a girl geeze.

Tonight I dine on turtle soup! Man that really makes me want to play some TMNT 2 on NES…I pretty sure that’s where that line is from?

Chestnuts roasted by IHAQ @ 06/07/2009 1:59 PM

I could only be so lucky to find Bebop and Rocksteady. These Turtles have been shelfwarming since before Christmas here. With Target only restocking once in their 6-month tenure. And the only other store with them is K-Mart with their bloating pricing. All I want is Shredder. But all I’ve seen is Turtles and April. :(

Lifehacker.com just did an article based on reader submissions about the best 5 netbooks on the market right now. Check it out, good luck with the hunt for one – http://lifehacker.com/5273096/

When Matt comes back, man, he comes back with a vengeance.i guess Playmates does too.Maybe some kids will look at these figures and say, “Hey, i need to watch the old cartoon instead of this piece of crap new version they have on today”, but that probably won’t happen. As for a 300 dollar laptop…no, that’s not gonna happen. And Macs are beyond overrated.

Chestnuts roasted by BloodMist @ 06/07/2009 3:40 PM

I need more money. I want these TMNT figures, the G.I. Joe re-releases, and I want me some Mighty Muggs in the worst way.

I have mentioned in a thread I had yet to post in! I feel like I belong! Thanks, slick316!

Chestnuts roasted by Teddy Ray @ 06/07/2009 4:08 PM

Brian, there is no Shredder, or Casey, Slash or the Foot Soldier. Just the turtles, Splinter, April, Rocksteady and Bebop. Why they didn’t put out the Shredder figure is beyond me.

I would love to see a ’80s TMNT action figure line that did justice to the designs of the show, especially where Splinter, Shredder and Rocksteady were concerned. I already mentioned why Rocksteady turned out the way he did, but why did Splinter look so bad, and why was Shredder half naked? Part of the reason I always loved the Foot Soldier so much is because it looked EXACTLY like the one on the show, probably the closest any of the Playments TMNT figures looked to the actual character on the cartoon.

Man, SNT was great last night! X-E is BACK! Oh yeah.

Rev.- Soma? Have you been reading too much Huxley?

Chestnuts roasted by PlantMonster @ 06/07/2009 5:46 PM

Matt – have you encountered Masters of the Universe Classics yet? Generally I’m with you about not changing toys from their classic versions (look at the doomed 200x He-Man line for an example, though some love it), but these suckers are AWESOME.

Larger, multi-articulated, and based very much on original prototypes and boxart. I’m buying two of each, I love them.

Chestnuts roasted by Jay Firestorm @ 06/07/2009 5:48 PM

Went shopping today. I didn’t get a TMNT figurine but I did get a Luigi one, which is just as awesome in my opinion.

Nice to see it’s the all-yellow April too, instead of that bullshit one with the orange trim all over her jumpsuit they released later. Though I don’t remember that blue stripe along her leg, but it has been, like, 19 years or something.

Chestnuts roasted by Hanglyman @ 06/07/2009 6:06 PM

Re: the blue strip — the original was released both with the strip and without. One was a lot rarer, but I can’t recall which.

RE: Netbooks – I am currently writing on a Samsung NC-10. I mostly use it for writing/browsing the Internet/listening to music while either watching TV in the living room on my couch or playing video games. I also watch movies from Netflix.com on it while laying around in bed or on the couch. If you are looking for a portable Netbook to do these types of things, I highly recommend the NC-10. It has about a 6-hour battery lifetime, so you do not need to constantly re-charge or worry about the battery abruptly dying on you. However, its best feature, and primary reason I bought it over a regular laptop, is the fact that its keyboard is 93% the size of a standard laptop keyboard (The arrows and F keys are the main sacrifice in size). With this keyboard, your hands never get tired or feel cramped when you get into heavy-writing sessions. While no Netbook has a built-in DVD drive, I will soon be purchasing a portable DVD-RW drive in order to download some of my CD/DVD-based programs onto my netbook (e.g., MS Office, Worms, etc.) along with giving me the ability to watch DVD movies when I feel the need.

Overall, I could not be happier with this product.

Plantmonster – Not this time! Carisoprodol put me on planet X, almost a month before my scheduled departure!

Since I don’t have much to say about ninja turtle toys, this is the total of my contribution to this thread. I’m out of practice of having anything to say about x-entertainment.
