TONIGHT I DINE ON TURTLE SOUP EEHHHHEHHHHHH.

Happy SNT. I'm going to spend it trying to dust off the ancient X-E Summer Jukebox. This could take days, but maybe we'll get lucky? I mean, how am I going to bring the site back to its former glory without an assist from pirated Lionel Ritchie songs?

I don't know how I missed this, but Playmates has re-released several classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures in what's gotta be the best retro revival I've ever seen. If you're gonna bring back old toys and cater exclusively to nostalgists, this is the correct way to go about it. No lame upgrades, no new molds, no fancy celebratory packaging -- just give 'em to us the way they were.

I won't say that they're 100% identical to the figures we played with in the late '80s/early '90s, but they're 99.9% identical. What's more, Playmates only indulged in very slight packaging modification. Unless you look really close, they almost appear to be old store stock, yanked from the bowels of TRU's storage warehouse.

When toy companies do these retro revivals, they often hedge their bets. The toys are usually based on the classics we grew up with, but upgraded so that young kids without any rosy memories might still be interested. That strategy sucks. It pisses off old-schoolers who distinctly remember less points-of-articulation on their Nien Nunbs, and besides, it's not like kids are going to pick slightly-remodeled toys that made their mark 20 years ago over the advanced playthings made for today.

I don't know if Playmates is smart or just cheap, but like Solid Base almost said, this is how you do it.

I picked Bebop, Rocksteady and April. Partly because they justify my preference for perverted and obscene action figure adventures, but mainly because they were the only three figures Toys "R" Us had in stock.

Of the three, Bebop has long been my favorite, both as a toy and as a cartoon character. He had a certain...what can we say...relaxed approach? I've always admired his ability to be a raging mutant warthog who crept out of dimensional portals to shoot comically oversized guns, all while being pretty laid back about the whole thing.

Rocksteady was Rocksteady. I seem to remember it being slightly difficult to find his action figure during my youth. April was even tougher to find, but I'm guessing that had more to do with a more limited production run than anything else. (There's no way Playmates could do a TMNT collection and exclude April, but I doubt they made as many Aprils as, say, Donatellos. Though truthfully, I'm only speculating because it's fun to pluralize character names like that. Try it. "Donatellos." "Shredders." "Casey Jonseseses." Ahhhhh what a fulfilling Saturday night this is.)

Most remarkable is that Playmates kept the original "origin comic" on the card-back completely intact. The Turtles' have many origin stories depending on the era and medium, but I have a fondness for the card-back comic version's simplicity. Here, we learn that Shredder poured random green ooze down a sewer hole, hoping it would zap Hamato Yoshi (Splinter, in pre-rat form) dead.

It's a gem of a visual, really. Shredder, leader of the Foot Clan with fourteen trillion dollars' worth of alien technology at his beckon, chooses to dispatch of his ancient enemy by kneeling over a sewer hole and pouring a 12 ounce cup full of slime down into it. Something tells me that this idea wasn't birthed in a twelve-hour meeting of villainy's greatest minds.

Of course, Shredder has the wrong idea about his death slime. Instead of killing its targets, it mutates them and increases their strength and abilities tenfold. It really makes you wonder who seeded the idea of mutagen being a foolproof killer into Shredder's head. This was akin to kicking the soccer ball into your own team's goal, but even more awesome, because it's Shredder pouring mutagen and not soccer.

Overall Grade: :) :) :) :) :) and additional happy faces. Aside from the figures shown above, the re-release also includes all four Turtles, Splinter, Casey and at least three additional villains. No Rat King, though. Lack of Rat King is the main reason why I just texted God with "wave 2 turtles reissues plz thx."

PS, I'm in the market for one of those super-lightweight limited-capacity laptops. You know, the ones that weigh three pounds or less, and can do anything a regular computer does, until you try to do two things a regular computer can do at the same time? One of those. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. (No Macs, though. I love Macs, but not for writing.)

I don’t have those toys anymore either. Some of these I never had like the Foot Soldier and Slash. It’s just that I don’t buy things purely out of nostalgia. Personally I find modern action figures to be much nicer. That’s all.

Cameron: I use AOL’s “File -> New” screen. It’s really the only thing I can use. Using anything else drives me nuts. I’ve been using AOL’s “File -> New” screen for almost fifteen years now.

Man those origin cartoons on the back bring me back,

Just bought a DS lite with a R4 chip today, anyone have any good game recommendations? This is my first gaming system since Sega Genesis, so I’m a bit out of the loop.

o_O You still use AOL. I thought those accursed servers got burned to the ground years ago.

Men, we now have a mission worth undertaking.

Chestnuts roasted by Neg lights the torches @ 06/07/2009 1:52 AM

I only use it for the File –> New. :)

Long after AOL shuts down, I will keep the prog on my computer so as to use its gloriously clean and shiny File –> New screen.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 06/07/2009 2:01 AM

Oh good :D

Alright, Gralf, here goes:

Pokemon Platinum
Phoenix Wright: Ace Attorney
Phoenix Wright: Justice for All
Phoenix Wright: Trials and Tribulations
Apollo Justice: Ace Attorney
Trace Memory
Hotel Dusk
Legend of Zelda: Phantom Hourglass

The Ace Attorney games and TM and HD are modern takes on point and click adventure games. LoZ is LoZ and Pokemon is Pokemon.

Man, it made me SO happy to click on here and see not only a new post, but a TMNT one at that. I have no money for toys right now but just knowing they’re out there makes me happy.

My friend has an Eee PC and likes it a lot. He suggests not getting smaller than a 10-inch, though. And even with the 10-inch the keyboard IS tiny as hell, I couldn’t type on it without constantly making typos. I suppose that’s something one would get used to, though. I only used it once.

Chestnuts roasted by jazzy @ 06/07/2009 2:08 AM

Gralf: Anything from Nintendos big franchises. Pokemon,Mario,Metroid, Zelda etc… . Metal Slug is also great. As are the castlevanias. I suggest goin to the big Ns official site and lookin through their libray. It’s all neatly organized for ya. :) On an unrelated note, WOOOPAHH!!!!!!!

Neg: Someone else told me earlier today that Transformers Animated was canceled. I had no idea. I’m kind of bummed about it. I thought last week was just the season finale. I never thought I’d actually not only enjoy the show, but look forward to it every week, especially after I was SOOO pissed when I first saw what it was going to look like. I still the think the character designs and animation were a major disappointment, but the storylines were great. They did some things with the characters that I thought were really cool.

I’d still like to see another one that’s a bit more traditional though, and more mature. Hey, let the guys that did G.I. Joe: Resolute have a go at it. That would be awesome.

Chestnuts roasted by DJ D @ 06/07/2009 2:12 AM

I loved that part of the show was Cartoon Network fare on par with, say, Ed, Edd, and Eddy and the other part was high drama.

I love the designs and think they led to some of the greatest toys ever produced. I’m so thankful they are still going to put out the announced figures.

I’m definitely picking up Rodimus, Arcee, and the Earth-Mode Wasp. I don’t usually like repaints, but for some reason since I saw Wasp I’ve wanted a green Bumblebee repaint instead of Waspinator. I’ll buy a 10th ann’y Beast Wars Waspy before I buy the Animated one. It’s a bit simple for my taste.

Chestnuts roasted by Neg @ 06/07/2009 2:18 AM

It got much better later on in the second season after they did away with that whole thing of having one lame “villain of the week” show up, and instead focused on longer storylines.

At first I didn’t think they would be able to pull off making decent toys because the shapes of the robot modes were so weird and misshapen, but they looked kind of cool. I’ll take a tall, cartoonish Starscream any day over that chicken-legged piece of shit that’s in the movies.

Chestnuts roasted by DJ D @ 06/07/2009 2:37 AM

Yeah I agree with everyone else….get a net book. Costco has an HP one for 349.00, and an acer for a little less. I like the HP version and I may get one. Toys R Us has the lenovo ones for about 289 or higher depending on storage size I think.

Finally found strawberried peanut butter M&Ms….not bad.

Chestnuts roasted by mandy_Reeves @ 06/07/2009 2:40 AM

The human villains were alright for comic relief, but their real function was to make the Decepticons appear as a much bigger threat, which is a purpose I think they served well enough.

Interesting you should mention the chicken legs, seeing as Animated Starscream’s legs have the weirdest damn joints I have EVER SEEN. Is it so much to ask for a Starscream with normal legs!?!?!

They need to do Animated figures in the Masterpiece line, and Starscream needs to be first. Whereas, Leader Bulkhead is already just about masterpiece level, imo. Jazz, too.

Chestnuts roasted by Neg @ 06/07/2009 3:06 AM

I’ve seen the Masterpiece Starscream. I wish VERY BADLY that I could get it!!!

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 06/07/2009 3:32 AM

He’s got some issues. The black wash on the top of the figure, the quality of the plastic, the skirts that weren’t in the promo pics, etc., etc.

Chestnuts roasted by Neg @ 06/07/2009 3:37 AM

Happy SNT everyone!

Not sure if anyone has found this yet, but the Mountain Dew Game Fuel has returned in two variations – now reflecting World of Warcraft instead of Halo 3. I’ve found that the blue is superior to the orange. Gotta love the TMNT figures, although when are we getting Turtle pies to celebrate the 25th anniversary?

Chestnuts roasted by jjwspider @ 06/07/2009 3:42 AM

Ultraman> The reissues don’t have any added articulation; there are, however, new toys based on the old characters that are updates. They’re pretty slick, for the most part.

As for Turtles, I’m hoping they re-release the Cyber Samurai Turtles to coincide with the upcoming Forever War comic, which will wrap up the Archie TMNT comic series.

Chestnuts roasted by LBD "Nytetrayn" @ 06/07/2009 3:44 AM

I must be thinking of different ones then.

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 06/07/2009 3:50 AM

From the Classics/Universe2.0 line I recommend

Sideswipe/Sunstreaker
Rodimus

Wait, I thought I bought more than that. Guess not

Inferno and Cyclonus are aces, though. That’s pretty much agreed upon by the Youtube TF Reviewer community.

Chestnuts roasted by Neg @ 06/07/2009 3:54 AM

Late night thread!

I find myself infinitely more interested in Transformers: RotF now that the release date for I Love You, New York has been pushed back to later in the year :P

My buddy recently got an Asus 1000E netbook, and he recommends it. Good battery life. It’s a tiny little bugger.

Chestnuts roasted by squee4242 @ 06/07/2009 4:10 AM

MysteryD8 They made a 3rd Butterfly effect movie either the end of last year or the beginning of this one. I have a copy of it on my computer. I watched the 2nd one and yes it was like a watered down version of the first one. I love the 1st one it’s one of my favorite movies of all time.

We had pizza for dinner! And Matt is on here talking about Ninja Turtles!! Totally cool. Totally.

That was the best thing that happened today, today was an epic fail. The van that my best friend’s mom was supposed to be making payments on that is 2 months (which really isn’t that far behind IMO) behind on was repoed this morning. He took the day off work and is scrambling to get financed someplace else or will work a deal out with someone with a truck or a car or something. He will take a taxi to and from work tonight and that will give him the weekend (his weekend is mon and tues) to call around and try to get some type of car that won’t screw us over completely on a deal.

Also we had two power surges and the second power surge fried our DVR box (we had a new one sitting there to be set up just haven’t gotten around to it until tonight) this afternoon and his two computers he uses. They were plugged into a surge stick but it still fried them.

This morning I bit the bullet and applied for an at home virtual call center job. I googled and it is legit. They don’t get as much work because of outsourcing but if I can work a shift or two a week I can tolerate it and help with the bills. I don’t think you guys know me well enough but I am a spoiled rotten kid when it comes to working a job. I have absolutely refused for 3 years to get work. I am sorry if that offends you but that is just how I am. I appreciate 9 to 5 people a lot. From what I hear this job they treat you like shit but what other job doesn’t?

I have been trying to apply myself to drawing and selling them online (link in name) but that is hard as well because I haven’t drawn anything on a regular basis since high school. But I think once I can do it as steady work then that would be the job I can tolerate and enjoy. Also Friday I had a bit of a mental breakdown but I am fine now. I did the girl thing and cried it out. It was really no reason. It wasn’t like our only wheels got repoed or anything ‘sigh’

I saw those TMNT figures at Target. Mystie even gave the April O’Neil figure a punk/goth/emo makeover! You can see the full article at crowncombo.com .
