06/06/2009: TONIGHT I DINE ON TURTLE SOUP EEHHHHEHHHHHH.

Happy SNT. I’m going to spend it trying to dust off the ancient X-E Summer Jukebox. This could take days, but maybe we’ll get lucky? I mean, how am I going to bring the site back to its former glory without an assist from pirated Lionel Ritchie songs?

I don’t know how I missed this, but Playmates has re-released several classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures in what’s gotta be the best retro revival I’ve ever seen. If you’re gonna bring back old toys and cater exclusively to nostalgists, this is the correct way to go about it. No lame upgrades, no new molds, no fancy celebratory packaging — just give ‘em to us the way they were.

I won’t say that they’re 100% identical to the figures we played with in the late ’80s/early ’90s, but they’re 99.9% identical. What’s more, Playmates only indulged in very slight packaging modification. Unless you look really close, they almost appear to be old store stock, yanked from the bowels of TRU’s storage warehouse.

When toy companies do these retro revivals, they often hedge their bets. The toys are usually based on the classics we grew up with, but upgraded so that young kids without any rosy memories might still be interested. That strategy sucks. It pisses off old-schoolers who distinctly remember less points-of-articulation on their Nien Nunbs, and besides, it’s not like kids are going to pick slightly-remodeled toys that made their mark 20 years ago over the advanced playthings made for today.

I don’t know if Playmates is smart or just cheap, but like Solid Base almost said, this is how you do it.

I picked Bebop, Rocksteady and April. Partly because they justify my preference for perverted and obscene action figure adventures, but mainly because they were the only three figures Toys “R” Us had in stock.

Of the three, Bebop has long been my favorite, both as a toy and as a cartoon character. He had a certain…what can we say…relaxed approach? I’ve always admired his ability to be a raging mutant warthog who crept out of dimensional portals to shoot comically oversized guns, all while being pretty laid back about the whole thing.

Rocksteady was Rocksteady. I seem to remember it being slightly difficult to find his action figure during my youth. April was even tougher to find, but I’m guessing that had more to do with a more limited production run than anything else. (There’s no way Playmates could do a TMNT collection and exclude April, but I doubt they made as many Aprils as, say, Donatellos. Though truthfully, I’m only speculating because it’s fun to pluralize character names like that. Try it. “Donatellos.” “Shredders.” “Casey Jonseseses.” Ahhhhh what a fulfilling Saturday night this is.)

Most remarkable is that Playmates kept the original “origin comic” on the card-back completely intact. The Turtles’ have many origin stories depending on the era and medium, but I have a fondness for the card-back comic version’s simplicity. Here, we learn that Shredder poured random green ooze down a sewer hole, hoping it would zap Hamato Yoshi (Splinter, in pre-rat form) dead.

It’s a gem of a visual, really. Shredder, leader of the Foot Clan with fourteen trillion dollars’ worth of alien technology at his beckon, chooses to dispatch of his ancient enemy by kneeling over a sewer hole and pouring a 12 ounce cup full of slime down into it. Something tells me that this idea wasn’t birthed in a twelve-hour meeting of villainy’s greatest minds.

Of course, Shredder has the wrong idea about his death slime. Instead of killing its targets, it mutates them and increases their strength and abilities tenfold. It really makes you wonder who seeded the idea of mutagen being a foolproof killer into Shredder’s head. This was akin to kicking the soccer ball into your own team’s goal, but even more awesome, because it’s Shredder pouring mutagen and not soccer.

Overall Grade: :) :) :) :) :) and additional happy faces. Aside from the figures shown above, the re-release also includes all four Turtles, Splinter, Casey and at least three additional villains. No Rat King, though. Lack of Rat King is the main reason why I just texted God with “wave 2 turtles reissues plz thx.”

PS, I’m in the market for one of those super-lightweight limited-capacity laptops. You know, the ones that weigh three pounds or less, and can do anything a regular computer does, until you try to do two things a regular computer can do at the same time? One of those. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. (No Macs, though. I love Macs, but not for writing.)

MOTA classic figures… http://www.mattycollector.com/store/matty/en_US/list/categoryID.12422000

20 bucks each seems kinda pricey, but they look really cool. only a few of the ones on this page have been released yet apparently…

Just read that Trick ‘r Treat is finally getting a release date…sort of! It’s hitting some film festivals in July all over the country, and finally getting a DVD/Blu-Ray release in October. Finally! Too bad it probably won’t get a theatrical release anywhere around here. But, I’m glad that I know now that I will actually see the thing some time in this lifetime. I thought it would be in release date limbo forever.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 06/07/2009 7:52 PM EDT

The MOTU figures look fantastic.

My diatribe was pointed more towards some of the G.I. Joe reissues and some of the Star Wars reissues, which were changed, but not in any remarkable (or needed) way. I don’t get the concept of reissuing old figures, updating them, but not updating them enough to where they compare to the “current” stuff. It’s a midway strategy and nobody’s ever happy with it. Those MOTU releases are “uber” versions of the classic — that’s cool. But I wouldn’t want, say, Mer-Man with the same body as yesteryear but a wildly remolded head.

Ghosted by Matt @ 06/07/2009 7:55 PM EDT

If they’re gonna rerelease old figures, then they should look exactly like they used to. Because they’re obviously tryin to appeal to nostalgia fans. And if they’re gonna update em, they should go all the way, not just make a few changes here and there.

I can’t help it if I’m so sexy, plantmonster. I was just born this way.

Can’t change what I am, baby!

So, plastic turtles! My brother had them. I was maybe a year or two too old for the turtle action. I just slipped by that demographic.

Qvc is running a special on one of those mini laptops.
5 easy payments of $86 a month plus S&H for the 6 cell. They have a three cell too… I recently bought a camera off a special price deal from them and it’s working out fine.. Most of the other stuff they sell is inflated from hell, but the special price deals arent bad. Just didn’t understand why no tracking number when they ship items. Hope this helps! =)

I first saw these back in February in the toy section of the Target at the Deptford Mall. Between these, the stuffed Smurfs in the next aisle, and the 50th Anniversary Little People I’d just seen (not nearly as close as these due to health concerns, but at least they tried), I was tempted to ask one of stocking people what year it was. ;)

Ghosted by starwenn @ 06/07/2009 9:56 PM EDT

Matt, the Mer-Man figure comes with two heads! That’s the beauty of it. I have both sitting on my shelf. The new head is actually based on the drawing of the character on the back of the original cards.

Hordak is this month. Regardless of how you feel about how they handled the armor, he looks like a fantastic update. Check out http://www.he-man.org for more information.

We saw Up tonight! it was amazing. How Pixar keeps the bar raised so high year after year is beyond me.

Next year is Toy Story 3!!! There was a 3-D teaser trailer with the previews.

I agree with Teddy…I need more money. I won’t lie, I don’t care a whatnot about action figures for myself. But if I can force them into the hands of my son and take his grip of Bakugan, I will be happy.

I also desperately need new lappy. This one was 350 on clearance two years ago. My other two have died and are two and five years old. Dear lord I cannot wait for this recession to end so the fine people of Minneapolis start dining out in absurd fashion once again. That, or I secure my dream job :)

So, Mr. Traj and the oldest of the Mini Trajs went to NYC Times Square this weeked on a road trip. I was living vicariously through them as they shopped in the TRU, Disney and what they called the M&M store (not sure if that’s the real name of the store – they couldn’t remember). Too bad it wasn’t closer to Halloween; I bet the TRU would have been badass. They spent most of their time in the Pokemon section of TRU, and took a ton of pics to send to me (some of my favs – the Harry Potter, Ron, Hermione and Hagrid Lego statues, the clock Melman got his head stuck in in Grand Central Station and the breakdancing street performers). They even saw a mugging (only amusing to tourists, obviously). Matt, do you live in the actual city? Shows how long it’s been since I’ve posted here – I thought you were still in NJ. I’m surprised they don’t have a small, hand-held word processor that you can carry in your pocket – like a PDA used only for typing and transferring docs. An actual Mini Notebook.

I can’t believe no one else has said this yet, but CONGRATULATIONS Matt #2! Good luck and keep us (or at least me :) ) updated!

I never collected TMNT figures, but I did collect He-Man the first time around. I’m sure they got thrown out when my uncles sold my grandparents’ house, which sucks b/c I hadn’t really thought about them in so long, and now I’m thinking about them and I know they’re gone. I especially miss my Punched-In Chest He-man. He was the best.

Is bringing back toys from 20-30 years back a common practice for every generation?

Ghosted by trajeal @ 06/08/2009 12:09 AM EDT

Trajeal, I had the Battle Armor He-Man and Skeletor when I was a kid. Alas, my mom gave them to my cousin sometime in the late 80s; god only knows where they are now.

Ghosted by starwenn @ 06/08/2009 12:39 AM EDT

Its good to see someone else is enjoying the resurgence of the TMNT line. I really hope the turtle gods remake some of the goofier characters like Pizza Face or Muckman and Joe Eyeball. It’s fun capitalizing Joe Eyeball as a proper noun.

Hurray! I’ve been waiting for this entry since I picked up the 4 Turtles back in April! Since then I’ve also acquired Splinter and April.

my faves were michaelangelo….his head smelled good.

I liked the baxter stockman, mondo gecko and that tan looking horn toad thing with a hawiian shirt. Casey Jones was cool too and Metal mech was neat.

Remember the Turtle Blimp? Wasn’t there grenades that popped and had some kind of dust in them or whatever. my mom wouldn’t let us get the blimp for that reason.

We first found out about TMNT right before they debuted on tv…my friend got all four turtles for his b day and everyone at the party was like *silence* what are those toys? then 2 months later the cartoon debuted.

Ghosted by mandy_Reeves @ 06/08/2009 11:23 AM EDT

Yeah I had the turtle blimp. Unfortunately, like almost every other kid in the world who got it, it was popped after about 10 seconds of being open. There were tears.

To this day the TMNT Sewer Playset still ranks as the best Christmas present I have ever (or most likely will ever) received. It is my Red Ryder 200 shot range model air rifle.

The TMNT toy I most wanted but never got is the Technodrome by far.

I need to buy myself these things! Too bad all my money is going to Masters of the Universe and medical school…

Ghosted by drew do @ 06/08/2009 11:32 AM EDT

Of all the franchises I loved as a kid, TMNT was probably the one that I went along with because everyone else did. My favorite toys in the line were the transforming vehicles that they eventually got. The motorcycle that turned into a paraglider thingee. SWOOOOOON.

Makes sense that I’d like anything that’s TF related, eh?

Ghosted by Neg @ 06/08/2009 12:04 PM EDT

My husband wanted to put these on our baby registry. It was hard, but I had to put my foot down on that one.

There is an Eee PC Netbook on Woot.com today For $170. It comes with Linux, though, which can be a plus or minus depending on who you are. It’s preloaded with OpenOffice, which I use exclusively on my laptop. I couldn’t afford MS Office, and I really hate stealing software.

I’ve been seeing these reissue TMNT figures at Target, and it warmed my cold, black heart.

Mutagen Man ROCKED!!!He was one of my favorite toys! I loved fillin him up with water! Wingnut and Scumbug were cool too.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 06/08/2009 3:22 PM EDT

If ya buy the season 7 dvd sets, you get a different turtle with each disc

Ghosted by Petah @ 06/08/2009 3:22 PM EDT

So, who out there has both the original and newer versions to compare? I see that either Matt or someone Matt knows has the original Bebop (as shown in the banner at the top of the page here), and now he has the new one. The coloring seems off – or is that just the photo?

Are these figures actually considered “versions” if they are supposed to be exactly the same as the old ones?
Wouldn’t a “version” be a changed or updated model, and not what would call a “replica”? Am I splitting the hairs thin enough?

Ghosted by trajeal @ 06/08/2009 4:23 PM EDT

And now you guys bring out the MOTU figures, making me drool even more.

Oh, and congratulations, Matt #2!

I want a splinter so SO bad.

And weird that April does not look the way I remember her. I totally thought her boobs were bigger.

The TMNT toys are the same except for the manufacture date on the toys themselves.

Well, I have nothing turtle related to say, but I do have something for those fans of limited edition- I finally went out and bought the new Transformers candys. Two sets in fact. One to eat now, one to hock to desperate webmasters in twenty years.

Ghosted by PlantMonster @ 06/08/2009 7:21 PM EDT

I just ate a package of the Strawberry PB Transformers M&M’s. Not bad, but I wonder what it has to do with TF’s. I think it would have been more interesting to put jam in the middle and called it motor oil.

Damn, missed SNT – I just spent 5 days in the hospital, SANS internet. For some reason, I thought I could get wireless with my laptop, but alas – I was cut off from the world. 5 days without internet is a long time.

I love love love how perfect these TMNT figures are. TMNT was a huge part of my life growing up, and one of the first movies I ever saw at the drive-in. It was crawling with kids and was an awesome night.

I don’t know how long this reissue has been out, but long enough for people to sweep up Leo, Mike and Raph. I managed to find 1 Donny at Target, but that was it. Like really, wtf. Theyre plentiful online…if your willing to pay double, close to triple for just 1. Sigh.

The search continues

Ghosted by Precursor @ 06/08/2009 9:00 PM EDT

Cameron T, that was the one and only Foot Cruiser, although I used it for the same purposes you did thanks to the Neutrinos driving around in one in the cartoon. I was always a little peeved that the evil Foot got a 10x snazzier vehicle than the Party Wagon. And the tires folded down so the damn thing could FLY!

It is great having Matt back in top form. We all knew he couldn’t stay away for TOO long.

I never had trouble finding rock-steady’s, I could never find Beebop. I would call walmart ever week to see if they had one. I doubt they ever checked but they would just leave me on hold for ten mintues and tell me no.

I’ve got an asus eepc netbook that is about 3 lbs, 10 in screen, and I love it, i’m using it right…..now

Hey PlantMonster: I just read that Wildstorm will also be releasing a Trick ‘r Treat graphic to go along with the movie in October. You can check out the first 5 pages here. What a great day for Trick ‘r Treat news!

And in other news, The Braves beat Pittsburgh 7-6 in the bottom of the 15th inning! What a game!

Thanks for alerting us Matt. I rushed out and grabbed a Don from Target as soon as I read your piece. I was so pleased to have it, I also purchased Marvel Hulk Slime, stood it on my Bradley Star Wars clock and submerged Salacious Crumb in it to express my happiness. I’ve captured the moment – http://farm4.static.flickr.com/3404/3610642088_40efbe4b82_b.jpg

If there’s an old action figure line that desperately needs to be re-released, it’s Super Powers. Kids today probably don’t know that there used to be a Batman figure that wasn’t neon green with gold armor and guns twice as big as he is.

Ghosted by tanta07 @ 06/09/2009 9:42 AM EDT

Completely agree tanta07 the Batman figures of today are absolutely insipid.

I had a few of the original Batman figures. The original, vanilla batman and one with slightly more blueish costume. No idea what the difference was, I’m guessing the tools he came with. I got them both for a birthday from the same person. You’d think I’d get Batman and a villain or something? Nope. Two virtually-identical Batmen!

I never once pretended they were good and evil Batman. I always made ONE of the Batmen go out by himself and save the other for a costume change, rather than a separate entity. SOMETIMES Batman would team up with my Robocop figure with inter-changeable “battle-damage” armor. They would always try to solve some nondescript mystery and then Robocop would have to leave him to go fight a Terminator. Every. Damn. Time.

Batman would get pissed that Robocop left him and would go on some emo quest where he had to climb to the top of something “to think”. I’d then make Batman grapple-hook all over the living room. Sometimes he’d end up on top the Empire State Building (the grandfather clock) and sometimes he’d end up going to Mount Icedoom (all the pillows piled on top of the couch).

He didn’t like going to Mount Icedoom because the Wampa lived up there that was perpetually eating a dead Tauntaun. The other reason he hated it here is because mom would yell and make me put all the cushions back (an avalanche!). My brother didn’t exactly like me playing with his Star Wars figures either.

I played with Batman’s retractable grapple-arm BY ITSELF more than I ever played with the figure. The one Batman figure I always wanted and never, ever was able to procure though… was the Batman with deluxe “fold-out” wings. You’re press a button and FWOOSH, giant bat wings unfolded. I wanted that so bad and never got it.

Oh Batsy…

Oooo, I wanna see Trick ‘r Treat! What’s up with straight to DVD? It looks like it could do okay in the theaters. It’s got a very ‘Tales for the Darkside – The Movie” feel to it.

Did I miss something? Why were you in the hospital, Muppet Baby?

Ghosted by trajeal @ 06/09/2009 11:20 AM EDT

Morfnblorsh, THANK YOU!

I used to own a few of these “batmen” as a kid and never knew WHAT the name of that particualr collection was.

I also had the ironwinch one…which was a blast to play with by itself. You could grab it by the batarang and spin it round and round and round and round…until hitting a sibling in the head with it :P

Funny thing is, I’d also asked an uncle fo the batman figue with the “foldout” wings…. and he went and got me the “Tec-shield” one (click my name for the link). I was utterly shattered at the time that he got me the wrong one…but I kinda grew to love my Extra cool GOLD Batman (and I’ve still got the Tec shield to this day lol..those figurs were REALLY sturdy!)

To your Uncle’s credit, look at the “action shot” on that packaging. That almost looks like wings flipping out of the Batman’s back.

*hug* He tried…. he tried.

Don’t look to Target for any hope, unless your just want a Donetello(most likely spelled wrong). Seems kind of a dick move to pick up ALL the turles and leave poor donny by himself, but that seems to be the way of the world. Still available online if your willing to get the pricing equivalent of a prostate exam though.

I totally recommend the ASUS Eee Pc. Which model comes down to the fine print, but the overall concept is beautiful. Weighs as much as a hardback book, weighs pretty much nothing with the battery out. Good, clear screen and, depending on model, a camera, a good-sized keyboard that I never have trouble with (and I’m a chickenpecking typing klutz) and a choice of Windows or Linux OS… My Linux version has Open Office, Firefox, a version of Excel, a calculator, a kind of MS Paint type thing, some games, and a whole bunch of other stuff I haven’t looked at yet, it’s all very intuitive, and I’ve never experienced it slowing up.

It’s also solid-state, which means it’s totally silent (until the fan starts up, which is admittedly kinda startling.) The only downsides are a horribly short battery life and not much space for saving data, and I think that depends on what model you get. I just save straight to a card anyway. The whole thing is really dinky and I’ll stop there before I really start sounding like a sales rep.
