TONIGHT I DINE ON TURTLE SOUP EEHHHHEHHHHHH.

Happy SNT. I'm going to spend it trying to dust off the ancient X-E Summer Jukebox. This could take days, but maybe we'll get lucky? I mean, how am I going to bring the site back to its former glory without an assist from pirated Lionel Ritchie songs?

I don't know how I missed this, but Playmates has re-released several classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures in what's gotta be the best retro revival I've ever seen. If you're gonna bring back old toys and cater exclusively to nostalgists, this is the correct way to go about it. No lame upgrades, no new molds, no fancy celebratory packaging -- just give 'em to us the way they were.

I won't say that they're 100% identical to the figures we played with in the late '80s/early '90s, but they're 99.9% identical. What's more, Playmates only indulged in very slight packaging modification. Unless you look really close, they almost appear to be old store stock, yanked from the bowels of TRU's storage warehouse.

When toy companies do these retro revivals, they often hedge their bets. The toys are usually based on the classics we grew up with, but upgraded so that young kids without any rosy memories might still be interested. That strategy sucks. It pisses off old-schoolers who distinctly remember less points-of-articulation on their Nien Nunbs, and besides, it's not like kids are going to pick slightly-remodeled toys that made their mark 20 years ago over the advanced playthings made for today.

I don't know if Playmates is smart or just cheap, but like Solid Base almost said, this is how you do it.

I picked Bebop, Rocksteady and April. Partly because they justify my preference for perverted and obscene action figure adventures, but mainly because they were the only three figures Toys "R" Us had in stock.

Of the three, Bebop has long been my favorite, both as a toy and as a cartoon character. He had a certain...what can we say...relaxed approach? I've always admired his ability to be a raging mutant warthog who crept out of dimensional portals to shoot comically oversized guns, all while being pretty laid back about the whole thing.

Rocksteady was Rocksteady. I seem to remember it being slightly difficult to find his action figure during my youth. April was even tougher to find, but I'm guessing that had more to do with a more limited production run than anything else. (There's no way Playmates could do a TMNT collection and exclude April, but I doubt they made as many Aprils as, say, Donatellos. Though truthfully, I'm only speculating because it's fun to pluralize character names like that. Try it. "Donatellos." "Shredders." "Casey Jonseseses." Ahhhhh what a fulfilling Saturday night this is.)

Most remarkable is that Playmates kept the original "origin comic" on the card-back completely intact. The Turtles' have many origin stories depending on the era and medium, but I have a fondness for the card-back comic version's simplicity. Here, we learn that Shredder poured random green ooze down a sewer hole, hoping it would zap Hamato Yoshi (Splinter, in pre-rat form) dead.

It's a gem of a visual, really. Shredder, leader of the Foot Clan with fourteen trillion dollars' worth of alien technology at his beckon, chooses to dispatch of his ancient enemy by kneeling over a sewer hole and pouring a 12 ounce cup full of slime down into it. Something tells me that this idea wasn't birthed in a twelve-hour meeting of villainy's greatest minds.

Of course, Shredder has the wrong idea about his death slime. Instead of killing its targets, it mutates them and increases their strength and abilities tenfold. It really makes you wonder who seeded the idea of mutagen being a foolproof killer into Shredder's head. This was akin to kicking the soccer ball into your own team's goal, but even more awesome, because it's Shredder pouring mutagen and not soccer.

Overall Grade: :) :) :) :) :) and additional happy faces. Aside from the figures shown above, the re-release also includes all four Turtles, Splinter, Casey and at least three additional villains. No Rat King, though. Lack of Rat King is the main reason why I just texted God with "wave 2 turtles reissues plz thx."

PS, I'm in the market for one of those super-lightweight limited-capacity laptops. You know, the ones that weigh three pounds or less, and can do anything a regular computer does, until you try to do two things a regular computer can do at the same time? One of those. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. (No Macs, though. I love Macs, but not for writing.)

I went freelance but stayed with Nick, essentially FT in all but name. :)

I couldn’t be freelance anything. I’d never end up doing anything…

Those are so sweet! They look exactly like I remember. I need to find me a Toys R Us that has them.

I actually had an April figure. My mom bought it for me because all the various mutants looked the same to her. This “Woman in a yellow jumpsuit” was the only one she was sure I didn’t own.

Oh those turtle figures are sweet. I love the packaging of the original sets, I want to make them into wallpaper.

I’m actually on my Dell mini 10 now in bed and I totally love it. I can practically fit the thing in my purse. It’s got a pretty big hard drive, too, so I’ve got all kinds of shit installed on it. No CD burner, but USB is always an option.

Going to check out another apartment this week… got a good feeling so I hope I get it because apartment hunting fucking sucks.

I’m loving the packaging. Two thumbs up for not messing with something that didn’t need to be messed with.

In other news… my boys can swim. AKA I’m gonna be a daddy!

Everytime I see this site it makes me so thankful that I grew up when I did. Back then it was a goldn age of toys.
Any relativly popular character got a whole series of figures to themselves.

To think, if I had grown up today my options ofr action figures would be more or less limited to The Dark Knight, Star Wars, Power Rangers, and some sadomachacistic torture fantasy from McFarlane.

Chestnuts roasted by Chris @ 06/06/2009 11:43 PM

You’d have Bayformers, which are OKAY. But much more importantly, you’d have Animated which are ALLTIME.

So, you would have been just fine ;)

GOD I HATE THAT ANIMATED IS OVER ;_;;

My favorite turtle figure? The Foot Soldiers. It was the first action figure that I army built. I haven’t found any foot re-releases but I still have two from when I was a wee lad.

Matt – Check out the Lenovo IdeaPad S10. I’ve got one and love it. Very light with a nice and bright 10.2 screen. It’s good for writing because the keyboard is small, but not too small. Check it out here: http://shop.lenovo.com/us/notebooks/ideapad/s-series

I saw these in Target and had the greatest sense of nostalgia sweep over me. These are great, plus I just found one of my old TMNT tapes that was a Burger King Kid’s Club exclusive. Anyone remember those?

Chestnuts roasted by Fox @ 06/06/2009 11:55 PM

AWESOME entry Matt! Also, once again, HAPPY SNT YA’LL!!! If I had the moolah, I’d buy these in a nano! But alas, I don’t. The one thing I just absolutely HATED about the original Transformers toys, was how limited their points of articulation were! The new reissues are MUCH better I think, because they’re much more articulate.

Matt, I just bought the EEEPC 900HA from ASUS. For the money (299) it’s quite the deal. While I bought it for keeping grades in the class room, its perfect for writing, traveling, and replacing bathroom magazines. This particular model has 160 GB of storage and a fast Atom processor. I love it!

Hey, Matt: Looking at your DVD collection in the background of the Rocksteady/April/Bebop pic, I noticed something. Looks like you’ve got kind of a hodge-podge of different types of titles there. The Texas Chainsaw Massacre: The Beginning combined with The Facts of Life, with what appears to be some sort of Terminator mixed in…and Pokemon of course. I guess the question is, do you have some sort of system for your DVD filing, or is it just thrown all together?

Chestnuts roasted by DJ D @ 06/07/2009 12:01 AM

I think I may have had all of the Turtle figures, especially in the early years. It was when they started producing figures of characters I’m not sure even appeared in the cartoon is when I lost interest. I even had a Splinter that transformed into the Turtlevan and something that shot plastic pizzas at you that hurt if you were in the way.

Chestnuts roasted by King JLA @ 06/07/2009 12:06 AM

Wow what’s with April’s bloodshot eyes?

Anyway, I bought a Dell Inspiron Mini 9 awhile back, and really like it. Good for taking notes and checking email (if Wifi is available), and at a good price.

Ninja Turltes art thine shiit!

YEAH!

Chestnuts roasted by Hazard @ 06/07/2009 12:48 AM

How can you not want these figures!!! I used to play with these way back…

BTW DJ D, I was thinking the same thing.

Who is on xbl tonite?

Chestnuts roasted by Burninfresh @ 06/07/2009 12:55 AM

I allllways wanted turtle toys, but wasn’t allowed because I was a girl. And I always had to be April when we played Ninja Turtles with the kids that my mom babysat for.. which meant I always got caught by shredder and spent half the day sitting by myself.

Fuck April. I wanted to be Raphael.

And I have that exact Christmas Classics cartoon dvd!

Chestnuts roasted by Cat the Vampire Slayer @ 06/07/2009 12:58 AM

Netbooks (those limited capacity laptops you talked about) are a rip off. You pay 300 bucks for something that can barely run the program you want it to. I recommend spending a little more and getting a full sized computer.

Chestnuts roasted by Stevezilla @ 06/07/2009 12:58 AM

King JLA~ Yes! The Pizza Thrower. I found one on Ebay a few years back Mint in Box for $20 and you better believe I snatched that baby up quick!

The best part of being a mom in the 80′s was getting to put all the stickers on such things as a TMNT pizza thrower. A definite win/win since my son hated doing it and me and my OCD freaking LOVED it~ergo my kid always had the most perfectly placed stickers eva. Good times.

Chestnuts roasted by 80's Mom @ 06/07/2009 1:07 AM

I love ya Matt and I’m thrilled to see new blog posts from you, but I have to seriously disagree with your conclusions here. I would have much preferred all new figures based on the classic designs instead of paying nearly twice as much for toys I already had.

The only reason that isn’t going to happen is that Peter Laird doesn’t care for the original cartoon which is also why we never see characters like Bebop, Rockseady and Krang in the new cartoons and movies.

So instead of something awesome we get this cheap substitute. The resissues even all use the same cardback, when the originals had unique ones.

Chestnuts roasted by Anthony @ 06/07/2009 1:09 AM

StevezillaFrom the sound of it, Matt just wants one to be able to write stuff during down time. Nothing processor intensive. I would hope a Netbook could handle MS Word or whatever program Matt uses to write stuff.

Matt, what DO you use to write for the site, anyway?

Anthony
The Target market for these reissues is mainly people that DON’T have the original toys anymore and just want to recapture their youth. There are plenty of new Ninja Turtle figures out there now. Oh, and Krang may not be in new action-figure form, but the Utroms look VERY similar to him….You may know the Utrom as Waiterbot.
