06/06/2009: TONIGHT I DINE ON TURTLE SOUP EEHHHHEHHHHHH.

Happy SNT. I’m going to spend it trying to dust off the ancient X-E Summer Jukebox. This could take days, but maybe we’ll get lucky? I mean, how am I going to bring the site back to its former glory without an assist from pirated Lionel Ritchie songs?

I don’t know how I missed this, but Playmates has re-released several classic Teenage Mutant Ninja Turtles figures in what’s gotta be the best retro revival I’ve ever seen. If you’re gonna bring back old toys and cater exclusively to nostalgists, this is the correct way to go about it. No lame upgrades, no new molds, no fancy celebratory packaging — just give ‘em to us the way they were.

I won’t say that they’re 100% identical to the figures we played with in the late ’80s/early ’90s, but they’re 99.9% identical. What’s more, Playmates only indulged in very slight packaging modification. Unless you look really close, they almost appear to be old store stock, yanked from the bowels of TRU’s storage warehouse.

When toy companies do these retro revivals, they often hedge their bets. The toys are usually based on the classics we grew up with, but upgraded so that young kids without any rosy memories might still be interested. That strategy sucks. It pisses off old-schoolers who distinctly remember less points-of-articulation on their Nien Nunbs, and besides, it’s not like kids are going to pick slightly-remodeled toys that made their mark 20 years ago over the advanced playthings made for today.

I don’t know if Playmates is smart or just cheap, but like Solid Base almost said, this is how you do it.

I picked Bebop, Rocksteady and April. Partly because they justify my preference for perverted and obscene action figure adventures, but mainly because they were the only three figures Toys “R” Us had in stock.

Of the three, Bebop has long been my favorite, both as a toy and as a cartoon character. He had a certain…what can we say…relaxed approach? I’ve always admired his ability to be a raging mutant warthog who crept out of dimensional portals to shoot comically oversized guns, all while being pretty laid back about the whole thing.

Rocksteady was Rocksteady. I seem to remember it being slightly difficult to find his action figure during my youth. April was even tougher to find, but I’m guessing that had more to do with a more limited production run than anything else. (There’s no way Playmates could do a TMNT collection and exclude April, but I doubt they made as many Aprils as, say, Donatellos. Though truthfully, I’m only speculating because it’s fun to pluralize character names like that. Try it. “Donatellos.” “Shredders.” “Casey Jonseseses.” Ahhhhh what a fulfilling Saturday night this is.)

Most remarkable is that Playmates kept the original “origin comic” on the card-back completely intact. The Turtles’ have many origin stories depending on the era and medium, but I have a fondness for the card-back comic version’s simplicity. Here, we learn that Shredder poured random green ooze down a sewer hole, hoping it would zap Hamato Yoshi (Splinter, in pre-rat form) dead.

It’s a gem of a visual, really. Shredder, leader of the Foot Clan with fourteen trillion dollars’ worth of alien technology at his beckon, chooses to dispatch of his ancient enemy by kneeling over a sewer hole and pouring a 12 ounce cup full of slime down into it. Something tells me that this idea wasn’t birthed in a twelve-hour meeting of villainy’s greatest minds.

Of course, Shredder has the wrong idea about his death slime. Instead of killing its targets, it mutates them and increases their strength and abilities tenfold. It really makes you wonder who seeded the idea of mutagen being a foolproof killer into Shredder’s head. This was akin to kicking the soccer ball into your own team’s goal, but even more awesome, because it’s Shredder pouring mutagen and not soccer.

Overall Grade: :) :) :) :) :) and additional happy faces. Aside from the figures shown above, the re-release also includes all four Turtles, Splinter, Casey and at least three additional villains. No Rat King, though. Lack of Rat King is the main reason why I just texted God with “wave 2 turtles reissues plz thx.”

PS, I’m in the market for one of those super-lightweight limited-capacity laptops. You know, the ones that weigh three pounds or less, and can do anything a regular computer does, until you try to do two things a regular computer can do at the same time? One of those. If anyone has any suggestions, please let me know. (No Macs, though. I love Macs, but not for writing.)

The fact that they release April and not Shredder suggests that a wave 2 is inevitable. :-)

I freaked when I saw these as well! Has it really been that long? Ultra cool, though!!

Morfnblorsh – Looks like those figures had some sort of vague connections to the ‘89 Batman movie. I fondly remember the first line of “official” Batman movie toys that came out. They were little more than just re-packaging of earlier Batman figure designs (the Batman figure was pretty much the “Super Powers” figure, just painted black, and the Joker figure was closer to the cartoon version than Nicholson’s version in the movie), but I loved them just the same.

Morfnblorsh, I totally agree with you on the deluxe edition Batmen. Unfortunately, I think “The Dark Knight Collection,” as cool of a collection as it was, is what birthed that whole craze. I remember having the scant original Toy Biz collection from the 1989 movie, the one that consisted of only three figures. (Batsy, The Joker, and Bob the Goon…whose leg was always in perpetual “kick” mode.) I guess when Kenner picked it up, they felt they needed a “complete” line and didn’t want to rely on fleshing it out with more of Joker’s goons. But I don’t remember Batman having that many different costumes in ANY incarnation.

I have to say, though, TDKC’s Joker figure was freakin’ sweet. I remember I was guilted into giving my cousin my Toy Biz Joker after his broke, and as a reward for my valor, Mom replaced it with the new Joker. I remember he looked more like Jack Nicholson than the other, and when you gave him an “acid bath” (just warm or cold water), his makeup would go flesh-colored, and his suit changed. Ah, memories…

velouria_78: The fact that it’s similar to “Tales fro the Darkside” Is why it isn’t being released in the theaters.

I don’t understand why they are releasing Slash at all thi8s early in the line. Baxter Stockman is much better and was released earlier in the original line not to mention Leatherhead and Genghis Frog.

I don’t think I ever owned any of the Batman toys from the live action flick.

I did own the Super Powers one, and I had one Batman that was really big. Along with a Robin and Superman. He looked more like the Adam West Batman. They all almost looked like the old large scale GI Joes.

I should get those TMNT re-issues for my youngest brother. He was infatuated with them when we were kids.

Just a quick note from the last post, I call it a shopping cart.

I’ve never heard anyone call it a wagon or buggie, and I’ve grown up in Queens and LI my whole life.

That’s so weird!

Darth Galvatron – Sounds like you might have had MEGOs. Damn, those were sweet. Off the top of my head, I had Superman, Batman, Robin, Spider-Man and Kirk and Spock as a kid. I was a knucklehead kid, though, so those toys got used and abused and lost over the years. I think those are actually worth money these days.

It’s a cart.

But, I checked with my old Italian granny, who has lived in the Bronx for about 60 years, and without providing any leading suggestions to persuade her, she asserts that the thing you push your groceries in is a “wagon”.

Therefore, X-E Matt is my Grandmother.

Old Italian granny from the Bronx — Youngish Italian Matty close enough to the Bronx — I feel vindicated.

GREAT NEWS:

http://ausiellofiles.ew.com/2009/06/its-official-futurama-returns.html

Did anyone see the Zack Morris interview on Fallon last night? I just saw it online and it is funny.

I had the Wild Fruit Punch Gamefuel Mounain Dew for lucnh today. It was ok, but the other flavor was better.

I recently sold/traded in my collection of action figures. I had the complete collection of JLA, Total Justice, and Legends of the Dark Knight. Also had quite a few of those Marvel Legends figures.

TMNT 3 had such an adverse effect on me that I can’t even leave a good comment on an awesome post. Sooooo…Giant Ape Juice?

kittymao, you can get a splinter by handling some really badly cut wood.

Muppet Baby, I hope your hospital stay wasn’t anything serious…in any case, glad to have you back!

I second the nomination that the Super Powers figures be re-released and add the Secret Wars figures to that request.

Teddy Ray:
haaaaaaaaaaa.

YOU know what I mean.

Do you remember whenthe movie ones came out- and Splinter was all mousy-looking and flocked? The mold was so awesome- except my weird brain wiring where if I touch fuzzy things like velvet, velour, or flocked things my tongue wigs out- so I had to handle fuzzy Splinter by his hands and feet or I’d get all grossed out.

drew do, Your Tales from the Darkside point is *so* true, and it sadly proves that I spend way too much time with like-minded individuals.

Oh, and for those of us that are Southern as hell, it’s a buggy.

Teddy Ray – good call on Secret Wars. I forgot about those. I remember the Spider-Man and the Captain America figures in partiuclar being among my favorites of all my action figures.

http://www.ninjaturtles.com/toys/1994/trekraph.htm

But yeah i still have them all in my parents basement collecting dust so if any one REALLY wants something out of the package and totally used i most likely have it.

BTW…My friend had the gi joe aircraft carrier! FUCKING HUGE! I had the gi joe space shuttle launch center and the large tan rolling tank thing for cobra. Fun times.

I think April’s actually easier to find now than she was back in the day. I never found her when I was a kid

I love my netbook–a Lenovo s10. Definately not a “RIP OFF” as some say–I use it for tons. Plus, if you’re just using it for writing, email, internet, etc you could even go with the lowest of the low. As far as tiny keyboards go, it took me about a week to get used to, now I have probs on my wifes huge Thinkpad–and I have huge hands!

Awesome! Really like that Playmates kept them the way they were. (I only hope that when Hasbro gets around to re-issuing Jem and the Holograms, they keep those toys the way they were instead of fiddling around with them.)

Ghosted by Holly @ 09/26/2009 1:05 AM EDT

April was never released with the original figures. They released hers waaay later with a line of toys from the “cartoon”, her fat boss was a toy too I think.

She should have been in the first original series though. I had to use my Teela.

Rocksteady was my first TMNT figure, and I was always impressed with his awesome assault rifle and WWII era flyer’s cap. Amazon better ship one of these overseas to me or the shall be massive amounts of hell to pay!
