I suppose the growing rumors of my demise and the 72 MySQL errors littering the site mean that I should probably, uh, write something.

As for why I haven’t posted — that’s a loaded question. A short break turned into a long one would be the simple answer. A longer answer would involve descriptions of the changing landscape of the industry I work in, and the copious amount of extra effort it’s taken to remain vital within it. It’s a personal journey and a boring story, totally unsuited to becoming a major motion picture, but the point of it is that the past several months have been so loaded with responsibilities that, bluntly put, I maxed out and couldn’t handle another.

I would never dare to say that writing about junk food and Krang is an outright responsibility, chore, job or anything of the sort, but there just came a point where if I had a free moment, I wanted to spend it privately. Being a go-getter is not my nature; I am, at heart, a lazy slug. But if I had to pretend otherwise, it could only be for 8 (or 9, or 12) hours a day. Not 24. I’d make a terrible Behrooz.

Then again, I guess it’s not brain surgery to package crap up all pretty like.

immat the library, do u no why??

my books r dewback lol

Anyway, finally, things are settling down, and I’m getting the itch back. I have big grand plans, but I can’t tell you about them, because if I break another site-related promise, I’d likely turn up dead. But, let’s roll the dice and try this much:

This Saturday, I will write about something. And you will tell me what that something is. Your options are:

A) Matt spends $25 at a Dollar Tree or some other such store, and describes his purchases. I’ve done it before, but not for years, and the statute of limitations has gotta be working in my favor by now.

B) Matt gets a new pet and writes about it. Don’t get your hopes up, I’m not buying a dog just to have something to write about. But it will be something alive.

C) Matt tries to find his collection of Kool-Aid; if he succeeds, he reviews a new flavor.

D) Matt builds a robot using only the materials available in his kitchen junk drawer.

I really hope you don’t pick “D.”

Okay, for the twelve of you who still read X-E, please, choose my adventure!

You could also use the 25 bucks to buy a pet and have it fight the Kool-Aid Man and a robot in a triple threat match.

Or buy the pet and turn it into a cyborg that runs on Kool-Aid batteries.

i was all about A, but saint has convinced me to vote D.

and, saint, dohopoki disappeared around the time the advent mystery started last year. he had his own unrelated wacky website crap going on, and when i solved it, it said the next phase could start in five days or five years…not a peep out of him since. maybe when he comes up for parole…

ericnrosesmom, Behrooz is a character from the show 24 (I believe). I Googled it b/c I didn’t know, either. :)

I was wondering the meaning of the number, too. I tried Googling it (natch) and all I could find were links directly back to this site, or other people who have this blog linked on their own blog. Oh, and one post from a guy trying to learn a some new Java program, who actually mentioned the 7777.0 square root thing. I was thinking it was some sort of error number that kept occuring behind the scenes, but I guess I was wrong.

This is what I just caught my kids watching. The end of the world is nigh!

A)

If you have the store “5 Below” in your area, go there. Everything $5 or less.

…oh doho. How we miss you.

Hey Matt, in a completely unrelated topic, I just found 8 cans of……..wait for it…..drumroll……… Diet Pepsi Jazz. The coating of dust was so thick I had to wipe it down with a wet cloth before I realized it was even Pepsi, let alone Pepsi’s crack head black cherry french vanilla cousin. So to sum it up, other than a disturbing party drink, I have no use for it. Want it?

Ghosted by Noschoollikeoldschool @ 05/28/2009 10:43 PM EDT

A!!!!!!!!!

I love your posts about random Dollar Store crap.

Welcome back. I’m sure I speak for everybody by saying we missed you.

A for sure.

Another vote for A. Matt, we love you!

Ghosted by Andy @ 05/28/2009 11:25 PM EDT

Even though the Dollar Tree seems to be winning. And that was also my vote. I feel it was selfish. For I knew it would be the bigger article for MATT.
MATT stated he has limited time.
I wanted MATT to give the biggest article for my selfish pleasure.
I am not changing my vote. But I want MATT to know I will receive anything he posts on saturday with a happy heart and a smile.
But I am still waiting for REV to give me directions to his party…..

Ghosted by TCoftheDEAD @ 05/28/2009 11:40 PM EDT

good to see u back!! i vote A

Ghosted by y2jay @ 05/28/2009 11:57 PM EDT

Diet pepsi jazz actually sounds yummy. I love diet cherry coke, is it anything like that?

Ghosted by ericnrosesmom @ 05/29/2009 12:35 AM EDT

Option “A” my good sir.

Ghosted by shoop da loop @ 05/29/2009 1:24 AM EDT

Ghosted by Anonymous @ 05/29/2009 1:27 AM EDT

Count another vote for option A.

But seriously, its so hard to decide because they are all good options. Any would be good readin’s

Ghosted by Nannageddon @ 05/29/2009 1:30 AM EDT

Matt, have you ever thought about taking someone else on to write articles for X-E, again? I think that’d fix the site’s lack of content.

Also, why not bring back the forums?

Ghosted by TRUKK NOT MUNKY @ 05/29/2009 1:40 AM EDT

I’m voting for A!

The Dollar Tree (and dollar stores in general) have always been a major source of inspiration for me.

But, I won’t be terribly disappointed if C wins, because, your Kool-Aid project was always a personal fave.

Ghosted by Review the World @ 05/29/2009 2:09 AM EDT

ericnrosesmom are you asking me if I know how a can of 2 year old past it’s expiry date tastes? Cos unless you send me a signed, sealed, and verified check for $1000 I have no facking clue.

Ghosted by Noschoollikeoldschool @ 05/29/2009 3:04 AM EDT

Looks like A is gonna happen! Yeah! Whoo!

I love this place!

Ghosted by Hazard @ 05/29/2009 3:07 AM EDT

As my boyfriend has been a loyal Dollar Tree slave for multiple years, that is my vote. Treasures abound, I found a Baywatch sticker album, complete with ten starter stickers for his stocking last Christmas. Funniest thing being, I got to the car and noticed someone had actually taken the time to remove the stickers, and I went in to explain. That turned into a search that yielded only three complete sets out of fifty or so, which means some soul is just dying for a complete Baywatch sticker collection.

I’m done :0)

Ghosted by Haley @ 05/29/2009 3:55 AM EDT

Good to hear from you again, Matt.

I say pick A. The possibilities are nigh endless for greatness.

Ghosted by Mike83 @ 05/29/2009 6:30 AM EDT

I cannot believe I’m a few days late, I check the blog nearly every day and I’m ALWAYS late when Matt posts.

Anyway, I’d like to see the Dollar Tree story, there are always weird/interesting things available at Dollar Tree and it may make for an interesting story. Even better would be for Matt to go to Big Lots where they apparently sell Rap Snacks from time to time.

Ghosted by Palmerholic @ 05/29/2009 9:29 AM EDT

Oh yea,and I vote a resounding A!

Ghosted by Lottie_of_Millhaven @ 05/29/2009 9:51 AM EDT

Anyone remember that person who used to summarize Matt’s posts with a rap.
I miss them. I thought they were funny.

Ghosted by Raisin @ 05/29/2009 10:48 AM EDT

Ill go with A as well. But anything is better than nothing.

Ghosted by Childhood Diarama @ 05/29/2009 11:06 AM EDT

Been jones’n for an old school article forever, so I pick A.

Ghosted by Lammy742 @ 05/29/2009 11:25 AM EDT

i vote for A, because i’m not mean enough to vote for D (even though i want to, as punishment).

Choice A is the only real choice.

Ghosted by ImissXE @ 05/29/2009 1:20 PM EDT

No fair.
Why doesn’t anybody like option B?

DOLLAR TREE!

Ghosted by Tall Snaggletooth @ 05/29/2009 2:03 PM EDT

noschoollikeoldschool, I’m not asking you to try it. I wouldn’t want to try it either. I’m just curious how strong the cherry flavor is, or I should say was.

On a business trip for the weekend to LA and oooooh the people watching. It will be nice to have a topical SNT while I am all lonely in a hotel room.

DJD: Thought of you last weekend, man. Saw NIN in Washington. Amazing show.

Ghosted by Bill @ 05/29/2009 2:19 PM EDT

Totally has to be D! If thats not really an option, A.

I dunno what dollar tree is, cos I’m a brit, but it sounds like our equivalent to poundland. Which is a shop I love, despite the fact so many of them smell like pee.

Woo I bought star wars pez dispensers today. Chewie and palpatine. Yey!

Ghosted by ory_bloodmyre @ 05/29/2009 2:36 PM EDT

Please do A! A would be a great way to start the summer.

New thread that doesn’t make the iMac’s os 9.2 get all indigested. (still figuring out what’s causing the OS X blank blue screen)

Nice to know Master Matt can still take care of buisness, despite the failed rumors to the contrary. Dewback joke? That’s how we know he’s the real Matt!

Dollar stores are great places for one of my only vices: buying Cheap Knockoff Crap. Old Paris Flea Market up in OKC is one of the best places for that. You can still find Spader-Man Bootleg toys ’round these here parts. The many carnivals, rattlesnake hunts, and county fairs are prime hunting times for the crap hunt. State Fair in September is the Holy Grail! Keeping the eyes peeled is always good advice when you get the urge for the cheap toys.

Matt,
You should host a contest for someone to win the items you buy at the Dollar Tree/Family Dollar/thrift store before you post your own thoughts on said items. You could have the winner write an article about it, send it to you and you could post both articles at the same time. Then, we would really see why you are the only one who should write articles for this site, and why content from other writers may sound good to some but would change the entire taste of X-E.

JMHO, a’course.

What is everyone’s plans for the weekend? I plan on hanging around the house doing some spring cleaning and watching cheesy movies on Sci Fi and Chiller while the rest of the household goes fishing. Knowing me, I’ll be doing more watching and less cleaning, but that’s why I give myself the entire weekend to get it done.

Man, I always thought CGI would be the death of the horror movie. But, seeing the way its being used in the most recent displays of “horror” (depending on your definition – horror as in “terrifying”, or horror as in “horrendous”), I must say that I rather enjoy the latest develpments put out by Sci Fi & Co. I get more entertainment from those than I do from the big budget pictures in the theatres. Why? Because horror has never been so ridiculously funny. I mean, I’ve seen campy, corny and even Ed Wood-esque, but this new CGI work has brought the grade B horror flick to a new level. I especially love the giant bugs that make the earth quake when they walk, and the flowing lava that chases and swallows cars going 90 miles an hour. The best part, though, is the actor trying to react to something not really there. They’re like, “Gah. A hand puppet… No-please-no-not-me-eat-him-first. Scream! Oops, I mean, Aaaaaaaah!”
Gotta love it.

kingklash, what’s a rattlesnake hunt? Are they as dangerous as they sound?

Ghosted by trajeal @ 05/29/2009 3:17 PM EDT

trajeal: The sci-fi original movies are indeed awesome if yur a fan of b-flicks. lol.

Totally found Twilight heart shaped sweet tarts at Walmart for a dollar yesterday! So cool! They say I heart E.C.
, Bite Me, live 4 ever, among other things…oh just checked, they are Necco Brand and not sweet tarts….like I’m gonna really eat them anyways.

They have collectible boxes with pics of Bella and edward with the cullen sibs in the back ground, and one of just bella…I could not find a jacob one though, but since he isn’t involved much til the second one, I can forgive I guess.

Oh they have a “secret scent”I’m guessing this is what the candy makers equate wit Bellas stank. Apparently the Necco company thinks she smells like fruity pebbles. How that is tantalizing to a vampire is beyond me.

Hi Matt! Glad you’re not dead. :-)

I vote for 25 bucks at the dollar store. I feel like the possibilities are damn near endless.

Whatever you choose, I look forward to reading about it.

B – 23
C – 33
D – 42
A – 178

Carry on.

Bill! You magnificent bastard, I’m flying back into LA tomorrow! Wanna go to Disneyland? For reals ;) Talk about excellent people watching.

Friend of mine just saw NIN/Jane’s Addiction last week. I went with her to see The Decemberists, too. I only knew them as the default favorite band of insufferable hipsters but now they’re the band that rocked my face off with epic accordian skillz.

I’ve heard of rattlesnake hunts (Whacking Day!) but I had no idea there was a retail component. You learn something new…

Thanks for that Rhino. You’re a winner in my book. I was going to do the same.
