Monster Rap.

Hello!

I was going to post this as a comment, but considering that the last thread is nearing 1000 comments (all positive) and takes about seventeen minutes to load, we may as well start anew.

I'm alive and unchanged. Seriously, I've just been working. A lot. It's been a less-than-ideal grind and I very much look forward to the current wave passing so I can get back to doing what I love to do best: Nothing, with a side of you.

Some of you have expressed interest in an early return for the Halloween Juke. I couldn't agree more and will try to include this soon as a partial mea culpa. I've been listening to that shit constantly, though I don't know if it has as much to do with me wanting Halloween as it does the fact that Geico's "Somebody's Watching Me" commercial airs 772 times each hour.

Also, there was an a site in circulation that evidently attempted to redirect users to a bad place. I cannot lie: I thought you guys were mistaken, but you were right, and the ad guys at UGO (and me) really, sincerely apologize for any trouble it caused. It's been eradicated and you should have no further trouble.

I finally watched that Clone Wars movie. Now, I was as hard on the prequels as anyone, but despite what seemed to be common opinion, I really didn't think it was bad at all. Granted, I fell asleep halfway through, but I'm assuming it grew no more offensive from there. Plus, the first reveal of Jabba's son, suddenly crawling out and goo-goo gah-ing with absolutely no build or fanfare, cracked me up so much that I had to rewind the scene seven times before watching the rest of (or the rest of the first half of) the movie.

Very odd to hear an ice cream truck's jingle playing during a thunderstorm in early April, but I swear, I just did.

I’ll never forgive the whole alien plot. Never. I can overlook them going over three enormous waterfalls in a raft with everyone being fine. I can even overlook Indy surviving a nuclear bomb explosion in a refrigerator that gets thrown hundreds of feet in the air and slams back down to earth. But I cannot stomach alien spaceships in an Indiana Jones movie. Also, did I mention that Shia LaBeouf sucked?

Chestnuts roasted by Brew Master @ 04/12/2009 10:24 PM

yeah brewmaster, aliens are WAAAYYYY more out there than the ark of the covenant, the knight who never dies, and tearing a mans still beating heart out. Seriously? It was just as Indy as any of the others.

Chestnuts roasted by drew do @ 04/12/2009 10:45 PM

I’m not saying the other movies were realistic, but Indy is supposed to be an archaeologist, not Mulder and Scully. Out of the 4 movies, the latest definitely had the weakest and most meandering plot. All I’m saying is that they should have never revived the franchise. But of course, the almighty dollar rules.

Chestnuts roasted by Brew Master @ 04/12/2009 10:55 PM

I’m getting them too, Neg. Something like welovesandi.com? Trend keeps stopping it from randomly hijacking my computron while I’m here.

As far as Indy goes… I didn’t mind “Crystal Skull” so much when I first saw it, for exactly the reasons Cameron has: The movie pushed everything forward from the Nazis and kind of adventure-y cliffhanger kind of movie of the 40s to the pulp-y sci-fi stuff of the 50s, and I was OK with that.

BUT THEN… as time has gone by, I’ve realized more that the acting was half-hearted and the plot points were rushed (Shia wasn’t bad, and I quite like him — he’s got an old Hollywood kind of charm, IMO — but his role in the movie just felt squashed and hamfisted). CGI doesn’t bother me, but bad CGI sure does, and I felt like a lot of the stuff looked outdated. The more I think on it, the more I feel like yeah, it really was just an excuse for Spielberg and Lucas to make some more $$$ and possibly relaunch it as a vehicle for Shia.

I’d watch it again, but I have the original trilogy boxset and I rewatched it recently. Those movies really are much much better. I probably won’t buy “Crystal Skull.”

They should make a shortround movie.

Chestnuts roasted by ory_bloodmyre @ 04/13/2009 6:50 AM

I completely agree with everything that you said Cameron T. That film has gotten a bad rap. It has become trendy to hate George Lucas though, so even if it was the best film ever made people would still find something to gripe about. I actually found Crystal Skulls more enjoyable than Temple of Doom. I admit that I loved that movie growing up, but I recently watched it again and it just doesn’t do anything for me anymore.

Chestnuts roasted by Jack @ 04/13/2009 7:49 AM

One reason why I like “Crystal Skull” more than “Temple of Doom” because “Doom” didn’t feature a single scene of the professor side of Indy.
Imagine a Batman movie without a Bruce Wayne scene. Sure you get 100% action hero, but you don’t get a glimpse of their other side. This left “Doom” to be too one dimensional. It’s a fun movie, sure, but it didn’t further the character of Henry “Indiana” Jones Junior.

Chestnuts roasted by Barry @ 04/13/2009 8:30 AM

Agreed Barry. Most of the appeal of Indiana is the Dr. Jones side of him. His character is much more interesting when you consider the fact that when not on an expedition he is just a normal college professor. I like that even more than the Bruce Wayne character. Bruce Wayne is a millionaire playboy. Dr. Jones is a regular guy.

Well, I made this a long time ago and sent it to Matt, but he never replied to it. So now I’ll share it with all of you, instead.

Classic, old skool XE readers will get this joke and likely appreciate it…I hope:

I’m also still getting the malware warnings/redirection. The weird thing is that it seems to be random. I’m fine most of the time coming here, but then all of a sudden it’ll pop up.

Chestnuts roasted by King JLA @ 04/13/2009 10:16 AM

I don’t get the malware thing, but that’s probably because I use AdBlock Plus for Firefox.

Chestnuts roasted by Annette @ 04/13/2009 10:22 AM

I just won the Classic Trilogy DVDs, containing the original theatrical versions, on eBay! Sure they’re non-anamorphic but they were only $8 each. ;)

I’ve also come to the conclusion that Blu-Ray is unnecessary, at least for my needs. Consider this:
I buy a 32″ HD television that looks fantastic at the HD resolution of 720p. I buy Apple TV which allows me to rent HD movies at 720p (with the possibility of HD movie purchases in the future). I buy an upconverting DVD player that makes DVDs look great on a 32″. I keep my DVD library which, unlike Blu-Ray, can be played in any desktop, laptop, car (with DVD) and friends house. In total I spend about $750 and will not have to replace my DVD library or spend the extra cost of $10-$15 more for a Blu-Ray as opposed to a DVD.

Chestnuts roasted by Barry @ 04/13/2009 10:46 AM

Blu-Ray really isn’t necessary at the moment. Machines are still pretty expensive not to mention that the dvds are 30 bucks a pop which I find to be absurd for a movie, regardless of how good the picture is.

Chestnuts roasted by Brew Master @ 04/13/2009 12:56 PM

True dat. I mean, in terms of movies I really want to see/own in HD there are about sixteen: The Pixar library and Star Wars saga. Does “Groundhog Day” benefit from 1080i? I can see Bill Murray’s eyebrow hairs! I feel that in 2 years streaming HD via NetFlix and iTunes will match or exceed Blu-Ray.

Super Comic Book Guy!

Chestnuts roasted by Barry @ 04/13/2009 1:35 PM

I intend to buy newer movies on Blu-ray when I can, but I refuse to replace my entire DVD collection. There’s no need for it. However I did buy Pinocchio on Blu-ray because the cleanup job they did looks superb even on my standard def TV, and it came with a DVD version of it anyway so there was really no reason not to get it.

Chestnuts roasted by Annette @ 04/13/2009 2:30 PM

I don’t want to jinx this but Ted Lilly is so far throwing a no-hitter against the Colorado Rockies. They just got through the fifth inning. Wouldn’t it be something if less than a year after Zambrano gets his no-hitter, Lilly gets one, and this one is the Opener at Wrigley Field!

Chestnuts roasted by BJ @ 04/13/2009 5:15 PM

Well, it took seven innings but he finally gave up his first hit. However, the Cubs are still leading 3-0.

Hey Matt! You just made the top 100 best websites of the past 100 years!

They’re alphabetical so, it’s at the bottom. But Still!

I’m on the fence about older movies being cleaned up digitally (especially animated ones). On the one hand, it’ll gain new, younger fans, but on the other, the older, rougher appearance holds nostalgic value.

Chestnuts roasted by Brew Master @ 04/13/2009 7:26 PM

Wow really Jabas son was on all the previews … Well i just got the icon that says this is an attack site , oh well it sucks any way

Chestnuts roasted by FrankenBerry @ 04/13/2009 7:39 PM

Ok so the Twitter thing was over like 200 comments ago, but I’ll add my 2 cents. Why would Matt need a Twitter when he already has a site that (probably still) gets thousands of hits a day?

And on the movie restoration thing, I’m mostly against it, for the simple reason that it removes the work from its historical and aesthetic context. Once it’s in the can, leave it alone. I can see how they’d need to fix things up when a movie is being put into a new media format for the first time and the extant copies may not be in the best condition, but don’t go adding new shit. It’s not like Michelangelo kept turning up to the chapel with a big ladder and a Sharpie to add some details every Thursday morning. Well maybe he did. I’m a film student, not an art historian.

Chestnuts roasted by Daniel85 @ 04/13/2009 9:28 PM

I think it is all a ploy by filmmakers, most notably Disney and Lucasfilm to see how many copies of the same film they can get us to buy. They release “special editions” and “re-mastered” copies just to enjoy the $$ we keep pouring into their studios for work that was done years and years ago. I own one copy of the Star Wars films, don’t plan to buy them again, but I know people who have like 4 sets by now…

Did Matt die again?
