Mountain Dew Voltage and Operation Fruit Snacks.

Not much has changed since I last smacked the keyboard and pushed the stupid "publish" button, which for some reason always takes 3-4 clicks to actually work. Perhaps this is WordPress's way of making me really think about what I'm putting out there. Or maybe it's because I use a really hideous wireless mouse that refuses to function if its receiver is within 37 miles of any other electronic device.

I turned 30. Big, scary number. I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel just a little bit old. With my vices, 30 is practically middle-aged. And I'm now faced with the awful truth that most of the world's hottest celebrities are younger than me. That just pisses me the fuck off.

I'm fine with being 30 in real life. On the Internet, I wish I was 26 or 27. I should've lied about my birth year when I started X-E, because then I'd have another 3 or 4 years before people who hate me would have the right to describe me as "some thirty-something idiot who writes about soda and fruit snacks all day." Oh well -- I cannot escape my destiny:

Looks like I missed the hubbub, but apparently, the latest Mountain Dew spinoff was chosen by "we the people" for a national release. More importantly, the latest Mountain Dew spinoff is some kind of crazy ass electric blue. My brain and heart are at odds on this one. My brain wonders how PepsiCo could forget the massive risk involved with blue soft drinks, as evidenced with their earlier "Pepsi Blue" nightmare. (Which I covered in that oft-plagiarized opus, Dead Sodas.) Still, my heart loves the idea of drinking carbonated Romulan Ale too much to care.

When it comes to blue drinks, everyone wants to like them. Hell, just typing the term "blue drink" had made me 15% happier overall. We want to like blue drinks -- and maybe we genuinely do -- but when you get all objective and philosophical about it, there just aren't going to be a lot of opportunities to down a bottle of blue soda without feeling stupid. It's a little too precious. If McDonald's started shaping their McNuggets like ninja stars, I'd be the first person in line for a golden arches tattoo, but I'd probably never eat Chicken McNuggets again. I don't know if that's a truly correlating analogy, but it's late, and I'm stoned.

Did I really get this far without even telling you the name of this new blue drink? Seems I did. It's Mountain Dew Voltage, and it's "charged" with raspberry citrus flavor and ginseng. I always panic when I read "ginseng" on a beverage label, because it's usually code for "something that will make me sad." But it's not so bad. It's sweet as fuck, and I sorta feel as if I'm drinking from a pool of seventeen different soft drinks upon every sip, but it's not so bad. Actually, it tastes like melted down Fla-Vor-Ices -- and that is definitely "not so bad."

And it is blue. Really blue. It's not quite "ocean blue," but if you were to color an ocean using crayons, it's that kind of blue. It's crayon ocean blue. I don't foresee myself purchasing Mountain Dew Voltage too often in the future, but then again, as the first few paragraphs detail, I'm only allowed to drink warm milk and Sanka now. Fuuuuuck.

Click here to visit Voltage's official website. It could change your life, though probably not as much as eating a cherry fruit snack version of the Operation dude's funny bone.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around these. Kellogg's has taken plenty of hope shots in the past, but Operation fruit snacks? Seriously? Operation? It's a nice idea if you're a fool blogger who needs to lose some writer rust on an easy target, but what about everyone else?

Fruit snacks are mainly marketed to elementary school kids, but are children really going to pick Operation over Batman, Optimus, Miley, Barbie and whatever other fruit snack themes are out there? No way, I say. Fruit snack themes usually come by way of a certain something's Q score at the schoolyard, and "the wacky doctor game" just does not rate in 2009.

Looking at the snacks, I realize that it'd take a psychotically advanced mind to connect Operation to them without the clues provided by the box and foily wrappers. There are frogs, birds, bells, dogs -- all stuff that ties into the board game, but not in any remarkably iconic way. Really, it's the sort of inane assortment you'd expect from a generic brand of fruit snacks found at the comically ethnic closeout store on the wrong side of the tracks. Plus, from everything I've seen, the individual packets include too many yellows and nowhere near enough reds. I consider this a personal insult, and so should you.

Wouldn’t it be kinda funny/cruel is Matt actually planned to end the Advent Calendar on that cliffhanger? Then when he starts the new one in December, he’ll have the characters talk about how they defeated the crab like they talked about defeating them during the unseen summer subplot?

I don’t know if that is genius or insane?

Chestnuts roasted by King JLA @ 02/22/2009 10:25 AM

Goob,

I think an Advent Calendar discussion is as good as any =\, King JLA makes a good point. In any case, I don’t think you should be moderating who is “wanted” here or not.

And yeah, I started thinking about the advent calendar again I noticed, again, that “WHERE IS THE END???” Tagline.

What a tease >_<

Chestnuts roasted by ThePlatinumStag @ 02/22/2009 11:50 AM

Ack – didn’t read the “If that’s all you can talk about” – still, your message was necessarily bitter.

Chestnuts roasted by ThePlatinumStag @ 02/22/2009 11:54 AM

Listen, I consider myself a moderator on this site. I feel I have the authority to tell anybody to leave at any time. ThePlatinumStag, right now you are being a distraction and I am going to have to ask you to leave.

Kid Nicky:The Wii really does have quite a selection of games to choose from. I think you’ll find SOMETHING you like if you just keep looking. :) As for the AC? I don’t see anything wrong with talking about it. Discussing what the ending might be is fun. Just be patient about it.

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 02/22/2009 1:23 PM

I don’t think that is really Goob, telling everyone to leave.

Chestnuts roasted by Anonymous @ 02/22/2009 2:27 PM

ULTRAMAN Oh I’m so glad you are Horde! I was sure you were gonna say Alliance… I dunno why. I seemed to be cursed with meeting people that are “them”. Unfortunately I’m on the Crushridge server. :T Well, I mean, I love my server, just unfortunate we aren’t on the same one. You know… But, I also have a 70 mage, one DK I barely started (58), and a lowly level 6 pali. If you ever decide to make one on Crushridge, I’m Arvalin. :)

Chestnuts roasted by Ryane @ 02/22/2009 2:44 PM

I’m thinking the second Goob is Fake Goob, as well.

The first one is right, though. Discussion of the AC is fine, but if the entirety of your comments is

“AC WHERE IT BE?!?!”
“WHERE’S MY GODAMN AC, FOOLS!?!?”

then yes, please, bugger off.

Chestnuts roasted by Neg @ 02/22/2009 2:49 PM

Thanks for the codes, Goob and ULTRAMAN. We put Goob’s MK code in last night, will do ULTRAMAN’s later…will put in Wii codes once we figure out where to do that. Will also post my Wii code later.

Daniel Lopez, those TMNT figures are awesome, but I don’t remember Slash being one of the originals. Weird.

And I believe that is the real Goob. Shes blunt and she don’t take no shit. That’s our Goob.

Chestnuts roasted by Teddy Ray @ 02/22/2009 4:17 PM

Teddy Ray: To put in Wii codes, go to the little Wii icon at the bottom and click it. Then go to the address book and register the code.

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 02/22/2009 5:27 PM

Cameron T.,I like games that aren’t jokes. Mad World is in black and white, for Christ’s sake. Wii Sports 1 was worth it’s price of free, but can you imagine actually paying money for a sequel? Conduit,I don’t really play FPS games. TMNT and Indy might be decent, but I’m not holding my breath, seeing as they’re both based on movies.

I’m sick of wasting my money on Nintendo’s crap. Wii Fit was 90 dollars, and it’s completely worthless,Wii Music was 50 dollars and was fun for 2 hours.

Chestnuts roasted by Kid Nicky @ 02/22/2009 6:11 PM

Are you telling me you actually bought Wii Fit and Music?

I thought you knew MUCH better than that, Nicky :(

Chestnuts roasted by Neg @ 02/22/2009 8:08 PM

IHAQ- Everyone HATES the music I listen to. Go Herb Alpert! Strauss Jr.! WHOO!

Chestnuts roasted by PlantMonster @ 02/22/2009 8:27 PM

Damn PlantMonster, you’re into the real good stuff. Impressive.

I listen to alot of 50s and 60s rock n roll, and people find that weird.(I’m 19, but I grew up on a lot of that. Though I don’t hate new music like I used to. Yep)

And why all the hate for the Wii? I guess Wii Music was kinda shallow (I also only played it for about 2 hours, with my bro on christmas. Made us laugh)..hmm, and Wii Fit? Its not really a video game. My postures shit and I’m in pretty terrible shape, so I find it kinda useful. But what the hell do I know, I barely play video games.

And I can’t believe some people are still pining for the AC. Christmas was 2 months ago. I really feel sorry for you if you haven’t found something else in that time to fill the void.

Chestnuts roasted by Tutsuro @ 02/22/2009 9:00 PM

Kid Nicky: Have you played any Zelda, Mario or Metroid on the Wii? As for Wii fit and Wii music, those are gimmick “games” that you really shouldn’t expect much from in the first place.

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 02/22/2009 9:04 PM

Zelda, Metroid, and Mario are obviously the franchises with excellent games on the Wii. Nicky’s point is that one should expect many more games on the system to be great, besides Nintendo’s flagships.

Least of all, FIRST PARTY GAMES besides that trinity.

Chestnuts roasted by Neg @ 02/22/2009 9:29 PM

When was the last time a Zelda,Mario,or Metroid came out? I mean, shouldn’t there be games throughout the duration of the system’s existence?

Neg-
Yes,I did purchase both those games, and I can’t tell you what I was thinking. I actually own Carnival Games also. But on the other hand I did buy Bangai-O for DS. I either buy all-time classics or crap.

Chestnuts roasted by Kid Nicky @ 02/22/2009 9:49 PM

Neg: I wasn’t sure if he meant the main franchises or not.
I still think there are some great games on the Wii that aren’t first party. Castlevania Judgment, the upcoming TMNT game,Lego Batman, Segas stuff etc. .

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 02/22/2009 9:54 PM

Exactly. It’s like okay, those three are out of the way, and they’ve pumped Brawl out, too.

Golly gee, guess it’s time to wait for the next generation while we try not to be buried in shovelware~

Chestnuts roasted by Neg @ 02/22/2009 9:55 PM

you got in my way, Ultraman! lol.

I was agreeing with Nicky. lol, Judgement.

Chestnuts roasted by Neg @ 02/22/2009 9:56 PM

I had no idea that most of the folks here were so young (25-30). I hope all you 30 and pre-30 folks don’t waste too much time feeling anxious about it, there’s enough time to freak out about being old when you actually are old.

Chestnuts roasted by Jelly @ 02/22/2009 10:05 PM

The comment to ThePlatinumStag was fake. The other one was real. I feel the “where is the advent calendar!?!” comments are like beating a dead horse. Even though OTOH if we stopped talking about it all together Matt might think we lost interest. I just feel that the people that are still leaving bitter, obsessive comments about it need to get a life. I love this place too but I am not obsessed. I actually left this last few weeks just to take a break. Don’t take offense to that people I just needed to concentrate on other things I was neglecting during the holiday season. I spend a lot of time here during that period and then balance it out by only reading Matt’s posts for about a month or two.

The music thing, I guess you could call me a music snob. Even though ever since I started mixing songs my taste in music has broadened so if I take anything from this experience it’s that. I still haven’t decided if it’s just a phase I am going through or I am going to commit to it. I mostly listen to alternative rock and any songs that have substance. I have some guilty pleasure songs as well that I feel isn’t real music but for some reason I just enjoy listening to them sometimes.

The Wii thing there is a guy called the Wiiviewr that reviews games on youtube that I like to watch. Also Knightwing is a great reviewer too, he doesn’t just review Wii games but that is a lot of them. I would NEVER buy a game without researching first. Games are expensive and I can’t get them often so I research alot before I buy one. I research beforehand anyway on other products. There are a lot of wiiware games that look really good. Like world of goo, tetris party, dr mario online, Lit, etc. that can tide you over while you are looking forward to other games being released.

Teddy Ray Thank you for the nice comment about me. What is your wii code so I can enter it. I still haven’t entered in your mario kart code yet. I wasn’t in a mario kart mood last night. I watched some movies instead. I watched both Dawn of the Dead movies.

My birthday is on a Saturday, I want to do a live show. We’ll see.

Chestnuts roasted by Goob @ 02/22/2009 10:31 PM

Also I just remembered. I am not getting any Wii games for my birthday because I am saving all my money to go to Seattle for an online get together there in July. Some people might not see that being more important but to me obviously it is.

Jelly I think we mostly are because Matt talks mostly about things that we can relate to like the products from the 80′s and 90′s he reviews, movies, and current things. TY for your words of encouragement because I am one of those people that are freaking out.

Chestnuts roasted by Goob @ 02/22/2009 10:36 PM

See, I was right~

Chestnuts roasted by Neg @ 02/22/2009 10:37 PM

Is Judgement a shitty game or not? It’s like half the people praise it,and the other half just dismiss it as shovelware. I mean,I actually kind of like the redesigned characters, and the last thing in the world I care about is what does or doesn’t violate the canon Castlevania storyline. I just want to know whether it’s a solid game. I like the Neo Geo games on the VC,but it would be nice to have a modern fighting game on the system. I was going to get Guilty Gear, but now I hear there’s an improved version coming out?

Ultraman-I do have Lego Batman, and it is pretty good. As far as Sega goes,I bought Ghost Squad, which is a good arcade style game, and I bought and traded in Sega Superstars Tennis. It was just such a low budget crapfest.
