Mountain Dew Voltage and Operation Fruit Snacks.

Not much has changed since I last smacked the keyboard and pushed the stupid "publish" button, which for some reason always takes 3-4 clicks to actually work. Perhaps this is WordPress's way of making me really think about what I'm putting out there. Or maybe it's because I use a really hideous wireless mouse that refuses to function if its receiver is within 37 miles of any other electronic device.

I turned 30. Big, scary number. I'd be lying if I said I didn't feel just a little bit old. With my vices, 30 is practically middle-aged. And I'm now faced with the awful truth that most of the world's hottest celebrities are younger than me. That just pisses me the fuck off.

I'm fine with being 30 in real life. On the Internet, I wish I was 26 or 27. I should've lied about my birth year when I started X-E, because then I'd have another 3 or 4 years before people who hate me would have the right to describe me as "some thirty-something idiot who writes about soda and fruit snacks all day." Oh well -- I cannot escape my destiny:

Looks like I missed the hubbub, but apparently, the latest Mountain Dew spinoff was chosen by "we the people" for a national release. More importantly, the latest Mountain Dew spinoff is some kind of crazy ass electric blue. My brain and heart are at odds on this one. My brain wonders how PepsiCo could forget the massive risk involved with blue soft drinks, as evidenced with their earlier "Pepsi Blue" nightmare. (Which I covered in that oft-plagiarized opus, Dead Sodas.) Still, my heart loves the idea of drinking carbonated Romulan Ale too much to care.

When it comes to blue drinks, everyone wants to like them. Hell, just typing the term "blue drink" had made me 15% happier overall. We want to like blue drinks -- and maybe we genuinely do -- but when you get all objective and philosophical about it, there just aren't going to be a lot of opportunities to down a bottle of blue soda without feeling stupid. It's a little too precious. If McDonald's started shaping their McNuggets like ninja stars, I'd be the first person in line for a golden arches tattoo, but I'd probably never eat Chicken McNuggets again. I don't know if that's a truly correlating analogy, but it's late, and I'm stoned.

Did I really get this far without even telling you the name of this new blue drink? Seems I did. It's Mountain Dew Voltage, and it's "charged" with raspberry citrus flavor and ginseng. I always panic when I read "ginseng" on a beverage label, because it's usually code for "something that will make me sad." But it's not so bad. It's sweet as fuck, and I sorta feel as if I'm drinking from a pool of seventeen different soft drinks upon every sip, but it's not so bad. Actually, it tastes like melted down Fla-Vor-Ices -- and that is definitely "not so bad."

And it is blue. Really blue. It's not quite "ocean blue," but if you were to color an ocean using crayons, it's that kind of blue. It's crayon ocean blue. I don't foresee myself purchasing Mountain Dew Voltage too often in the future, but then again, as the first few paragraphs detail, I'm only allowed to drink warm milk and Sanka now. Fuuuuuck.

Click here to visit Voltage's official website. It could change your life, though probably not as much as eating a cherry fruit snack version of the Operation dude's funny bone.

I'm still trying to wrap my head around these. Kellogg's has taken plenty of hope shots in the past, but Operation fruit snacks? Seriously? Operation? It's a nice idea if you're a fool blogger who needs to lose some writer rust on an easy target, but what about everyone else?

Fruit snacks are mainly marketed to elementary school kids, but are children really going to pick Operation over Batman, Optimus, Miley, Barbie and whatever other fruit snack themes are out there? No way, I say. Fruit snack themes usually come by way of a certain something's Q score at the schoolyard, and "the wacky doctor game" just does not rate in 2009.

Looking at the snacks, I realize that it'd take a psychotically advanced mind to connect Operation to them without the clues provided by the box and foily wrappers. There are frogs, birds, bells, dogs -- all stuff that ties into the board game, but not in any remarkably iconic way. Really, it's the sort of inane assortment you'd expect from a generic brand of fruit snacks found at the comically ethnic closeout store on the wrong side of the tracks. Plus, from everything I've seen, the individual packets include too many yellows and nowhere near enough reds. I consider this a personal insult, and so should you.

Happy 30th, it’s no big deal. If you want to be nostalgic over the 80′s and 90′s we have to be near 30 to really appreciate it and not be posers. If you don’t remember watching Perfect Strangers in prime time or can’t relate to the Toys R Us and KayB toys heyday, you can’t truly appreciate 90% of your content. We’re all getting older with you. I mean, Megatron must be in his 50s now, right?

Was I the only fan of Pepsi Blue? I really liked it. There is a rumor on the nets that it’s making a comeback this year. My Pepsi Blue story is that we were at a concert when it premiered and the promo tent for Pepsi was giving them away for free. After the show was over, I guess they had way to much Pepsi Blue left from the give away, so they started handing out cases of big gulp Pepsi Blues. It was a long walk back to the car trying to lug those things around, but the following week was worth it to have fizzy blue stuff in my glass at every meal.

Rev: Where do I fit into your plans? You keep promoting people, except me. Do I even have a function here anymore? Heck, it took two weeks past my birthday (and constant reminders) for you guys to even wish me a happy birthday. I feel like that “Mr Cellophane” song from “Chicago.” Nobody knows I’m here. :(

The more I read the words Operation Fruit Snacks the more I wish I could go on a mission called Operation Fruit Snacks.

Ah yes birthdays, I’m gonna be 27 on the 26th. I’m not feeling old yet, I still don’t refer to myself as an adult. But sadly as it does happen to adults my birthday isn’t that big of a deal anymore, I don’t even have plans…but I am about to give birth any time now, so I may just be having a baby on my day, then that’s it, it will be all about my kids day.

Happy Birthday, Matt! This post makes the prospect of turning 30 (I’ll be 28 in August) less frightening. I’m sure even at 40, I’ll be a Star Wars/MOTU/TMNT-loving adult, hopefully turning my own son (or at least my little cousins) on to the great toy lines that were.

As for this whole Operation thing, I have yet to see a new version of Operation, but the fact that there’s a “safer” updated version of it pisses me off. It reminds me of when I spied a “Hungry Hungry Hippos” box in my little cousin’s closet. I opened it up to play it with him, and it was like 1/4 the size of the original, and I think it only had two hippos. Why mess with something that was PERFECT and fun as it was? Anyway, this rant suddenly made me feel old, like I need to be fitted for Depends.

And Rev., thanks to your MySpace pics, I’ll never listen to Jethro Tull again without giggling and thinking of you. One of my former co-workers interviewed Ian Anderson for his college newspaper, said he was a really down-to-earth guy.

I forgot to mention someone very important in my post above. Someone who should never be forgotten, or ignored, or neglected in any way, because he’s cool as hell and I think he had a birthday recently.

Yep, old JoshC was Junior Assistant Manager of this General Region as well, so now it’s the four of us! Riding high! How could I forget JoshC?

Chestnuts roasted by Rev. Back It On Up 13 @ 02/20/2009 12:30 PM

Jeremy,

Ian Anderson wants me. I know deep down in my heart, he wants to throw me down. Alas, it will never be, because I am very happily married, but if my beloved sifu ever runs off with the lady from the bakery or whatever, I’m sending Ian Anderson my phone number.

Sometimes when I put those pics there, I forget that people are going to see them. Boy is my face red. I got outed having a hot crush on a 61 year old man with a vest and a do-rag. I have style. Maybe not great style, but it’s MY style.

Also, HAPPY BIRTHDAY JSSALUARCK! I can NEVER get your name right. Sorry to break your balls. You can be the king of everything for today.

Ah yes!!!! I feel sane again now that there is a new x-e post. How I have missed it so! DJ D, good to see you again. I saw those operation fruit snacks in TRU the other day, and first was confused about why they existed…but then doubly confused by the fact that there were fruit snacks in TRU….nowm I havent been in a TRU since I was around 8, so almost 20 years later, it seemed so different to me.

Chestnuts roasted by Leigha @ 02/20/2009 12:45 PM

sorry for (possible) double post, but PlantMonster thanks for posting about it from the pit….seriously….may have made my day

Chestnuts roasted by Leigha @ 02/20/2009 12:54 PM

Jeremy Whatshisface – That Hungry Hungry Hippos game that you found was the “travel” version. :)

And yeah – they have many versions of Operation out now. Character themed ones like Spongebob, and one with it’s own carrying case and some kind of pump, or something. I dunno. They gotta fuck with everything…

If you have a Mexican store in your area, then cane sugar Coca-Cola is yours for the buying. I’m going to have to buy one some day just for the flashbacks, in spite of the ‘beetus.

The other night, on the late news, I saw where some family bought some Mr Goodbars to snack on, and were about halfway done, when they discovered mealy worms crawling in the candy. The store where they were bought, and Hershey’s are on the case. But, how does one not notice within the first couple of bites, that you got larva in your chocolate, and chocolate in your larva? These were the big individual bars, to boot. They must have been really into the confections not to feel the squirming right off. Wiggly.

Oh no! Another Lori! Well, I figured it would happen sometime. That’s the risk you take when you don’t care to choose a clever pseudonym for yourself.

As usual, when the topic of fruit snacks comes up, someone has to mention Fruit Corners Fruit Bars and make me mourn all over again. I think the demise of Fruit Corners was a blow to kids’ lunchboxes for the rest of time. Fruit Roll Ups were so superior when they were still making them.

I always saw your 20′s as the time when you “set up” your life, so to speak, and your 30′s as the time when you actually start living the life you created for yourself. For me, turning 29 and realizing I hadn’t done most of what I wanted made me feel like a kid staying up late the night before the big project was due and realizing there was no way I was going to get it done. Now that I know that I’m probably going to be having twins around my 30th birthday, I feel better about it. Something about entering my 30′s as a parent just seems right to me. My husband’s the same age, and last year when he was on XBox, some kid asked how old he was. When he answered, the kid said, “Wow, I’ve never played with an old guy before!” Are you kidding me?!

Actually Matt, according to Pepsi, they’re bringing back Pepsi Blue so eat it!

Now wheres the advent caldender conclusion?

Chestnuts roasted by Chris @ 02/20/2009 2:52 PM

Lori(the original):lol. Don’t let it get to you. Kids think that anybody who’s even just 4 or 5 years” older than them is “old”. :) Happy B-day Cap.will. Live it up. Oh, and just out of curiosity Rev, where do you see me in your plans?

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 02/20/2009 2:55 PM

Matt: Don’t worry about being 30. I’ve been 30 since six days before Christmas and I’ve been feeling old for years. I’m already older than most of my soldiers and I’m constantly being reminded of how in the world I can be 30 and still haven’t “done it.” Of course, that’s something totally different on some other website that I will never be on! I’d rather go back to my childhood than talk about mature “adult” stuff any day.

Well, I’m enjoying being able to lay around in my room. I got a wisdom tooth pulled yesterday, on the same day where I gave blood. How’s that for being an interesting day? I give blood and then have a toot pulled. Anyway, the tooth removal wasn’t as bad as I thought it would be and yeah, it feels weird having a big hole in my upper gum region, but it really doesn’t hurt all that bad. This is my second wisdom tooth I had pulled. So am I supposed to be one-third less intelligent now? I mean, why do they call them “wisdom” teeth anyway? You definetly don’t get any more intelligent by having them. Perhaps the wisdom part is getting them removed because they serve no purpose and are the most likely teeth to get cavities. Perhaps I should have my other two pulled even though I had fillings put in them. Anyway, that’s all I have to say for now. Oh, and the new Mountain Dew? Wasn’t that flavor out this summer with those two other ones? Just asking. Don’t forget, I’m not as intelligent now that I had a wisdom tooth pulled, or am more intelligent? E=MC…what’s that? Guess not.

So I’m King for the day? Hooray.

Now here are my proclamations:
1.) I order Hi-C to bring back ECTO-Cooler
2.) Brings back “It’s Pasta Anytime.”
3.) Brings back Pepsi Holiday Spice and Pitch Black
4.) I order that there be a fifth Ghoulies movie so Matt can comment on the DVD.
5.) In fact, I say Matt gets a quote on all horror dvds from now on.
6.) Orders a proper Night Court reunion special. That 30 Rock episode wasn’t enough.
7.) Orders all parents to buy their kids green bamboo peanuts.
8.) Wants Rev. 13 to sing the theme songs to Golden Girls, Perfect Strangers, and Saved by the Bell.
9.) Orders ABC to uncancel Pushing Daisies and Dirty, Sexy, Money.
10.) Brings back Starburst Licorice, the best licorice of all time.

Chestnuts roasted by JLAJRC @ 02/20/2009 3:24 PM

Can you bring back Planters Cheez Balls too JLAJRC? I miss those things.

Chestnuts roasted by Jack @ 02/20/2009 3:48 PM

King JLA: I’m upset to learn that they don’t make Starburst licorice anymore. Is this true?

Jack: And Cheez Balls are gone, too? WTF, I really have been living under a rock.

Chestnuts roasted by Matt @ 02/20/2009 3:50 PM

Anyone see Shamrock shakes yet? I have a feeling that Idaho may miss out.

They still sell Starburst Licorice here. But then again, they might be a couple years old. But still, they don’t lose the flavor. It would just be like eating a strawberry flavored Bic pen.

Chestnuts roasted by Bill @ 02/20/2009 4:48 PM

Matt: I haven’t seen Starburst Licorice around here for a couple years. Which is kinda upsetting because they were they were the only licorice I liked. Never cared for Twizzlers, and they’re new “Rainbow” ones equally suck and are nowhere near as good.

Jack: Now that you mention it, I haven’t seen the Planters ones in quite a while, either. However, another nut company called “Kings (or something similar)” does and they are just as good. They also do the curls.

I think I’ll permanantly change my screenname to “King JLA” just to make it easier on you guys. Plus, it does sound better.

I think I’m gonna stop coming to this site if the Advent Calendar is not finished. I know that most of you will probably say, “Good riddance,” but I just had to say that. It makes me really sad not having a story finished. I’m weird like that.

Wow there a lot of people born in ’79, myself included. So do you consider yourselves the youngest of gen x or the oldest of gen y? I really do ask myself that question. Also I am very excited about MTN Dew made with sugar cane, I’ve tried Dr. Pepper with it and it’s a whole different soda that I actually like. Jones soda red apple is fantastic, tastes just like a red delicious apple.
