Mello Smello Stickers: The Smell Test!

I was digging through my many storage boxes for a top secret project, and was surprised to find a Ziploc bag filled with ancient scratch 'n sniff stickers. I have no idea how they came to be in my possession, but I'm not complaining: This was a magic Ziploc bag, sealed so supernaturally tight that all of the stickers somehow retained their goofy odors for around 25 years now.

Most of the assortment was of the official Mellow Smello variety. Scratch 'n sniff stickers were made by dozens (if not hundreds) of companies, but Mello Smellos were the standard by which all other stickers-that-smelled were compared. The fad rose in the '70s -- before my time -- but it was still going strong enough in the '80s for virtually every kid in class to have at least one heavily-fingernailed sticker placed at an awkward angle on their marble notebook.

Since my little batch of stickers was kept in such tremendous shape, it seemed like a waste to dump them back in the bottom of a cardboard box. Instead, let's review the collection and see what these legendarily odorous stickers actually smelled like.

TOP ROW:

Hot Fudge Sundae: There's a definite chocolate waft to this one. Kinda like Rolos. I would've given Mello Smello several thousand bonus points had they gone through the trouble of making the little cherry section actually smell like cherries, but even as is, it's making me want candy.

Baby Powder: I figured this would be an easy smell to replicate, and I was right. Good God, I don't think I've ever smelled a scratch 'n sniff sticker that delivered on its promise to such a level. The baby powder odor is huge and unmistakable. I feel 10% cleaner just by virtue of having placed the sticker one inch from my nose.

Caramel Apple: A bit more subdued in comparison, but the caramel scent is prominent enough. Sadly, this one is fighting with a disadvantage since it was stuck right next to the Baby Powder sticker in the Ziploc bag. The caramel is there, but so is the baby powder. And the baby powder is winning.

BOTTOM ROW:

Sniffy Peanut Butter: I gotta admit -- I don't remember scratch 'n sniff stickers working this well. Maybe I subsisted on lower quality editions in my youth? In any event, this smells so much like real peanut butter that I'm halfway convinced that the sticker is edible, and the only thing stopping me is knowing that I won't be able to decorate any notebooks with a peanut buttery sticker if it's in my stomach. Good show, Sniffy.

Strawberry Shake: Christ, this is amazing! This shit smells exactly like Strawberry Quik! Exactly! Even more incredible is the fact that I haven't had Strawberry Quik since I gave up on straight up milk over two decades ago, and yet, I still know that this smells just like it! Whether that's a testament to the sticker or to Quik, I leave up to you.

Popcorn: Hmm. Not sure about this one. It definitely smells like something, but I don't think it's popcorn. (Or butter, or oil, or anything else that would seem justified.) It's, dare I say, a little nasty, and I don't want to ruin this entry's overall palatability by describing what its scent brings to mind. On the plus side, I really like the sticker itself.

Raspberry Go-Play Yogurt: On my first whiff, I only surmised that this smelled like random berries. On my second whiff, the unmistakable combination of berries + yogurt prevailed. I've read about how scratch 'n sniff stickers work (a scented fragrance is plastered across the stickers, which is then "activated" when scratched), but I can't for the life of me determine how these companies so perfectly mimicked certain smells. Yogurt with berries? How do you make something that smells like that without actually using yogurt and berries? Voodoo?

Rose: They don't smell like roses, but they do smell like "artificial flowers," which is to say, the chemical shit that toy companies frequently spray on girly dolls to make them more noseworthy. I don't know if "flowers" would've been my first guess if there wasn't a big ass rose depicted to help clue me in, but it's a nice smell, all in all.

Tiny Martini: My absolute favorite of the batch, and I'm so glad that it's one of the few Mello Smellos that I somehow acquired two of. One for show, one for private worship. I'm not sure why they insisted on calling them "tiny" martinis (by this logic, the others should've had titles like "Tiny Rose" and "Tiny Raspberry Go-Play Yogurt"), but this is a minor gripe for what's assuredly the most awesome scratch 'n sniff sticker concept in history. A martini! A martini sticker that smells like martinis!

Since I only drink vodka martinis, it took me a moment to comprehend this one. Finally, it hit me: They smell like gin! When I was in my late teens, a few friends and I spent the evening drinking gin and tonics. After 17 of them, I got so sick that I swore off gin forever. I haven't had more than a few sips of the stuff in almost a decade. The smell of gin still makes me queasy, and in a roundabout-but-still-perfectly-valid compliment, these adhesive martinis make me want to wretch. They really smell like gin.

What a strange thing to write about on a Sunday night. If only HBO wasn't in reruns.

My sticker collection was on my dresser mirror. I had the dresser from birth till about 17 and by the end I had only one little spot I could use the mirror. It was a sad day when I had to get rid of it. I kept as many stickers as could, they now sit in a sticker album waiting to be given to my son.

I remember drawing pictures with those scented markers and finishing off my artwork with the scratch-n-sniff markers. Those pictures were a cornucopia of scents! I also remember having scented crayons. My favorite of those was the leather scented one. It made me want a new leather jacket.
On an apocalyptic note, I had a dream last night in which there was this secret society of three people who could save the world from armageddon (I guess that is what I get for watching Nostradamus: 2012 on History Channel last night). Each of the people had a special talent that was a piece of the puzzle to save the world. In the dream, I saw a transcript that laid out these talents and one of them was “understanding quantum nipple mechanics.” I just don’t know…

Some people mentioned pizza-scented stickers, and it reminded me that back in the day, I used to have TEENAGE MUTANT NINJA TURTLES STICKERS THAT SMELLED LIKE PIZZA. Quite possibly the finest thing I’ve ever owned, next to the sewer playset.

Fond memories of both the scratch and sniff stickers AND the scented markers. My elementary school had the scented markers. I never saw them anywhere else until they finally turned up at Staples a few years ago. They always smelled so strong – I especially liked the chocolate one!

As for the stickers, the rose and popcorn ones ring some distinct bells. I think I had the popcorn one somewhere (a notebook?) for a while, and I KNOW it didn’t smell that bad. It must have been next to the baby powder or the rose.

Ugh, definitely going through Advent withdrawls…..it’s bringing back memories of the Chia plot. :(

Love the wait for 23. As far as I’m concerned you can wait until Superbowl Sunday. It stretches out Xmas.

Tomorrow 1/6 is Three Kings Day and that’s as far as we held out Xmas in Puerto Rico….then the “Aguinaldas” which I think were like 12 days after that then “Candelabre Day” (wiki it) which is like Feb 2nd the day you burn your tree. So we reallly really really held out. Take your time Matt. Love you (not in THAT way).

MTV has both the best and worst shows

If they can make a sticker that smells exactly like a gin martini, one wonders what other “adult” flavors they could make?

Teddy Ray- That flavor is vile, evil, and makes me ill.

Matt- How about that HALLOWEEN JUKEBOX? (PLEASE!)

Chestnuts roasted by PlantMonster @ 01/05/2009 11:18 PM

Diego- That hamburger scratch and sniff I had smell like a pizza one.

Nickelodeon- MTV does have good and bad shows. I enjoy watching Jackass and Viva La Bam whenever they play.
Too bad both shows ended and that there are no new
episodes.

Matt- Take your time. Clark’s graffiti’d image means
you’re up to something with the AC.

I remember in first grade getting the stickers on our papers (I think they were some other brand, always showed the food item as a cartoon with crazy eyes and buck teeth). We coveted the grape sticker which smelled more like grape gum or candy than actual grapes, and the orange one which was fairly spot on… however I recall one disappointing afternoon receiving a taco sticker which at first was exciting because it was new- however excitement soon turned to dismay when I concluded it smelled more like a taco post-digestion. It was a sad day indeed.

First off, I love gin! But not in a martini.

My real question is:

What did the popcorn scratch and sniff remind you of?

Crazy Stickers, when will they ever learn!

The Unborn will be the scariest movie ever. Ever.

Cheetara, I didn’t want to make it obvious. I more or less summed up Billy Quizboy’s explanation to Doc Venture.

I’m pretty sure you agree that “Victor. Echo. November.” is one of the best episodes in the entire series. It was my #1 until Season 3 came along.

DarkSideofBrightness: OMG I totally had those crayons too! And the leather-scented crayon is the one I remember best too, just because it was such an odd scent for a crayon. That and the new car one.

Invader Norbert: “Victor. Echo. November.” kicks so much ass. I love it for the obscure music references (especially the Yaz one). I think my favorite from season 2 was “Fallen Arches” though. I love the Order of the Triad sooo much.

mandy_Reeves – Oh yeah, I have those Smurf scratch n’ sniffs too. One Smurf is holding a peanut and one has a rootbeer mug. One has a rose I think.

jazzy: I love the Order of the Triad sooo much.

I have the Order of The Triad T-Shirt that Astrobase gave away during the T-Shirt of The Week Club during Season 3. I would’ve liked it more if it was the orange version from “The Buddy System,” but it was a shirt with the Order of The Triad’s logo on it, so I won’t really complain.

I also have the Guild of Calamatous Intent’s shirt as well, which is equally as awesome. I would’ve gotten the rest, but a few things prevented me from doing so:

1) Money.
2) The fact that I really didn’t like a few of the shirts (the retro Dean shirt & the Quizboy one), and I didn’t like the bonus shirt that came from the Subscription package.
3) The aformentioned shirts that I have are already obscure enough in my circle of friends. Imagine if I had gotten Sgt. Hatred’s shirt, The Blackheart shirt, or even Killinger’s shirt, which was confirmed by Doc & Jackson as the most obscure shirt in the series.

Rev. You know how you have random thoughts when you are drifting off to sleep? This morning I had one that I need to share with you. My thought was that Giada the girl you are so strangely fascinated with should have her own pacman style game. I visualized it and everything. I was hoping when I woke up I would remember and I am glad I did.

CMJ As a kid I had a set of magic markers that were scented. And not the usual nasty but pleasant scent of those types of markers even though that was there too, but pleasant scents. The black one was black licorice, the red one was cherry, the blue was blueberry, yellow was lemon, pink was raspberry, green was watermelon etc. I think I didn’t really have a favorite. After a brief google search this was the mr. sketch brand markers if you are curious enough to look just type that in. They were thick markers not really for coloring. I got a coloring book for Christmas I should get out my colored pencils and things and color in it because coloring is so enjoyable.

Invader Norbert: I too have the Guild and Order of the Triad shirts. The only other shirt club shirt I wish I’d gotten was the one featuring #24 (Never Forget…::sniff::) Agreed, Victor. Echo. November. is definitely a highlight of Season 2. I also adore Love-Bheits and Twenty Years to Midnight (IGNORE ME!)

So many Venture fans! I was Lady Au Pair for Halloween this year. There was this whole thing where one of my friends was being super secretive about his costume so I refused to tell him what I was going to be, too. Then he showed up as Hank Venture and we looked like we planned it. Of course, that’s assuming that anyone else knew what I was in the first place.

(Oh, and check out the puffy crab sticker in the heading!)

jazzy: At their Dragon*Con panel last year, Doc and Jackson revealed in a subtle way that Brian Eno will probably show up in season 4. They’ve also gotten Brendan Small and Kevin Conroy (the voice of Batman in the animated series) to do voices for S4, so I am PUMPED.

SO am I the only one that reads each and every AC every year? Also am I the only one who did not get all the way done and still has some 2003 and 2005 commercials to watch?

I know what you mean about gin Matt, except for me it was vodka & orange juice (the screwdriver). I was about 17 years old at the time when I rented a room as a boarder in this woman’s house. Anyway, I was invited to take part in her pre-Christmas party where I was fed screwdriver after screwdriver after screwdriver. I don’t think I’d ever been as sick as I was the next day…….and to THIS day, I can’t go near vodka OR orange juice without wanting to hurl.
