Mello Smello Stickers: The Smell Test!

I was digging through my many storage boxes for a top secret project, and was surprised to find a Ziploc bag filled with ancient scratch 'n sniff stickers. I have no idea how they came to be in my possession, but I'm not complaining: This was a magic Ziploc bag, sealed so supernaturally tight that all of the stickers somehow retained their goofy odors for around 25 years now.

Most of the assortment was of the official Mellow Smello variety. Scratch 'n sniff stickers were made by dozens (if not hundreds) of companies, but Mello Smellos were the standard by which all other stickers-that-smelled were compared. The fad rose in the '70s -- before my time -- but it was still going strong enough in the '80s for virtually every kid in class to have at least one heavily-fingernailed sticker placed at an awkward angle on their marble notebook.

Since my little batch of stickers was kept in such tremendous shape, it seemed like a waste to dump them back in the bottom of a cardboard box. Instead, let's review the collection and see what these legendarily odorous stickers actually smelled like.

TOP ROW:

Hot Fudge Sundae: There's a definite chocolate waft to this one. Kinda like Rolos. I would've given Mello Smello several thousand bonus points had they gone through the trouble of making the little cherry section actually smell like cherries, but even as is, it's making me want candy.

Baby Powder: I figured this would be an easy smell to replicate, and I was right. Good God, I don't think I've ever smelled a scratch 'n sniff sticker that delivered on its promise to such a level. The baby powder odor is huge and unmistakable. I feel 10% cleaner just by virtue of having placed the sticker one inch from my nose.

Caramel Apple: A bit more subdued in comparison, but the caramel scent is prominent enough. Sadly, this one is fighting with a disadvantage since it was stuck right next to the Baby Powder sticker in the Ziploc bag. The caramel is there, but so is the baby powder. And the baby powder is winning.

BOTTOM ROW:

Sniffy Peanut Butter: I gotta admit -- I don't remember scratch 'n sniff stickers working this well. Maybe I subsisted on lower quality editions in my youth? In any event, this smells so much like real peanut butter that I'm halfway convinced that the sticker is edible, and the only thing stopping me is knowing that I won't be able to decorate any notebooks with a peanut buttery sticker if it's in my stomach. Good show, Sniffy.

Strawberry Shake: Christ, this is amazing! This shit smells exactly like Strawberry Quik! Exactly! Even more incredible is the fact that I haven't had Strawberry Quik since I gave up on straight up milk over two decades ago, and yet, I still know that this smells just like it! Whether that's a testament to the sticker or to Quik, I leave up to you.

Popcorn: Hmm. Not sure about this one. It definitely smells like something, but I don't think it's popcorn. (Or butter, or oil, or anything else that would seem justified.) It's, dare I say, a little nasty, and I don't want to ruin this entry's overall palatability by describing what its scent brings to mind. On the plus side, I really like the sticker itself.

Raspberry Go-Play Yogurt: On my first whiff, I only surmised that this smelled like random berries. On my second whiff, the unmistakable combination of berries + yogurt prevailed. I've read about how scratch 'n sniff stickers work (a scented fragrance is plastered across the stickers, which is then "activated" when scratched), but I can't for the life of me determine how these companies so perfectly mimicked certain smells. Yogurt with berries? How do you make something that smells like that without actually using yogurt and berries? Voodoo?

Rose: They don't smell like roses, but they do smell like "artificial flowers," which is to say, the chemical shit that toy companies frequently spray on girly dolls to make them more noseworthy. I don't know if "flowers" would've been my first guess if there wasn't a big ass rose depicted to help clue me in, but it's a nice smell, all in all.

Tiny Martini: My absolute favorite of the batch, and I'm so glad that it's one of the few Mello Smellos that I somehow acquired two of. One for show, one for private worship. I'm not sure why they insisted on calling them "tiny" martinis (by this logic, the others should've had titles like "Tiny Rose" and "Tiny Raspberry Go-Play Yogurt"), but this is a minor gripe for what's assuredly the most awesome scratch 'n sniff sticker concept in history. A martini! A martini sticker that smells like martinis!

Since I only drink vodka martinis, it took me a moment to comprehend this one. Finally, it hit me: They smell like gin! When I was in my late teens, a few friends and I spent the evening drinking gin and tonics. After 17 of them, I got so sick that I swore off gin forever. I haven't had more than a few sips of the stuff in almost a decade. The smell of gin still makes me queasy, and in a roundabout-but-still-perfectly-valid compliment, these adhesive martinis make me want to wretch. They really smell like gin.

What a strange thing to write about on a Sunday night. If only HBO wasn't in reruns.

The Double Dragon in “The Wizard” is under the counter of the diner, IIRC. Which doesn’t exist either. Fred Savage is all like “You got 50,000 on Double Dragon?!”– that’s completely impossible too. I do believe a PlayChoice Ten shows up later in Reno, when Jimmy is playing Metroid.

(Disclaimer: I could be misremembering any and all of that!)

Yuan Jing Phan: I’ve read about how the new 360′s are supposed to be a lot more reliable than the old models, but I don’t think they’ve been out long enough for people to play them and find out for sure. I hope they are a lot less troublesome than the old ones though.

Good Gawd. Disregard the earlier question I had about Goonies II, since apparently I misread the title, which in reality is Ghoulies II. Or maybe it was wishful thinking.

Sigh.

Goonies II is an NES game.

I think they should make a Goonies 2 film right now with the kids from the first movie…

They could find a way to stop the recession and save the entire nation with a handful of rubies, diamonds, and emeralds!

I haven’t read AC since about December 12th. Why do some people have their panties in a wad?

Speaking of Fred Savage, Neil Patrick Harris hosted SNL last night and mentioned how he was supposed to host SNL in 1990, but they chose Fred Savage instead in a funny monologue. Also, the Doogie Howser related Digital Short is probably gonna become another internet sensation.

I watched the latest Romero zombie movie “Diary of the Dead” last night. Very good, with the exception of the abrupt ending.

A couple of years ago my dad got “National Lampoons Christmas Vacation 2″ on DVD. We have yet to open it to watch it, and probably never will.

I remember that Fred Savage SNL. It was really good (they all were back then).

But man. Tonight’s episode– and I never say this– was an instant classic. Usually SNL has a few really good sketches and a lot of okay ones, but they fucking owned tonight. I’m going to watch it again tomorrow. Kudos NPH.

“I haven’t read AC since about December 12th. Why do some people have their panties in a wad?”

Because some people have been following it and are in suspense, unlike you? :P

Is there really a “mecha turtle” boss in the first TMNT game for NES? I was actually playing Double Dragon last week on Wii,and I don’t remember there even being a score. Really,by the time that movie came out,how many kids actually cared about their “high scores”? Games by that point were just played to see if you could beat them,or beat your friend in a 2 player game.

It’s funny how that movie pretty much only existed to be a Nintendo commercial, yet whoever wrote it obviously had no idea about video games.

I should watch The Wizard sometime just for laughs. I don’t know for sure why I never watched it as a kid, because I loved Nintendo and it would’ve been right up my alley. I have a feeling it’s because of the title. My mom was on this tirade against magic for a long time. Sigh.

Chestnuts roasted by Annette @ 01/11/2009 11:20 AM

Kid Nicky: That’s what makes the Wizard such a fun flick.

I absolutely adore the comment made by Billy Gunn:

“Worst SNT EVER thanks for nothing you drunk”

Oh god did I roll when I read that.

cajuncutie01- Many people (myself included) really get into the advent calendar. They just want closure. But the “panties in a wad” statement is inaccurate. That only applies to Rev.

Chestnuts roasted by PlantMonster @ 01/11/2009 12:42 PM

I resemble that remark.

Speaking of Double Dragon for NES – I got it for Xmas. Double Dragon still in the box, still with a faded price sticker on it. Oh yeah, also the original NES STILL IN THE BOX to play it with. I just can’t brag about this enough. Best Xmas gift EVA. I cannot believe how easy DD is! When I was a kid, I remember that getting to Stage 3 took days, and I got there in 20 mins and was like, WTF?

Still, makes me think of The Wizard everytime I watch that opening sequence of the game and remember Jimmy pounding buttons for no apparent reason…

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 01/11/2009 1:45 PM

I was going to keep my mouth shut on the whole “when will the advent calendar end” debate, but we are now about half way through Jan. and still not even ONE more entry.

I love the advent calendar and I stop by the site at least once a day. If Matt is getting advertising money and we are the ones that give him the traffic to collect said advertising money, then yes, he does owe us an ending.

Im sure now I will get attacked by the X-E Board Police. Bring it on.

Chestnuts roasted by Jess @ 01/11/2009 1:58 PM

LOL get em Jess!! How dare you to want an end to the AC. You’re just so selfish, it’s all about what you want. lol. The Nerve! How long before the “If i were Matt I’d never post it since yall whine” crap starts.

Well he never said it’d be this December that he finish it, maybe he meant 2009′s.

My panties usually only get in a wad when I buy the wrong size.

Chestnuts roasted by Trish @ 01/11/2009 2:34 PM

At this point its not the AC that I want, but just any sign of Matt being okay. Usually we get a quick “Sorry, I’ve been busy but I’m still alive and the AC will be ending as soon as I get to it”, but 6 days since the last post (this one) and still not a sign of life. :(

Chestnuts roasted by Barry @ 01/11/2009 2:34 PM

X-E Board Police weeeooohweeeohhhweee! weeeooohweeeohhhweee! Like a cop car

Dude, everybody knows that the responsibility for a bumping SNT falls on the readers, not Matt. Be a part of the solution, not the problem. We are the ones we’ve been waiting for!

I simply don’t buy the logic that your eyeballs on this site provides you any rights to anything. Honestly, I would think someone would be incredibly embarrassed to reveal that kind of mentality, but different folks, different strokes.

I was Googling Goonies 2 last night after Trish’s post, because I suspected it might’ve really been Ghoulies and I was curious ;) Turns out there really IS a Goonies 2 in the works: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=I-pBtmcByjc

Ah…the best way to spend a Sunday…watching “I Love The 70′s” on Vh1 Classic.

What I can remember of those days is freakin’ fantabulous.

Rev: Panties? What panties?

For anyone who cares: Sticker Update!
I have succeeded in creating these stickers, they both scratch and sniff. Unfortunately, upon first test sniff I gasped excitedly and then dryly remarked “Wow it barely works!”. They are weak. WEAK! I have the process perfected but the mixture is… not acceptable.

But this is no failure! I have taken my wickedness to the hive of evil known as the internet and sought out a perilous vendor with the missing nefarious piece of the insidious puzzle! This is serious business if you couldn’t tell.

With this new tincture I feel the mixture will be perfected and thus the process shall follow suite. Sorry to “Matt out™” on everyone, but progress cannot be made on these until I receive the new item in question (secret!). I will keep you updated, of course, or you can check my MySpace page.

Chestnuts roasted by Morfnblorsh @ 01/11/2009 3:05 PM

Why is the movie called “The Wizard” anyway? It has nothing to do with magic and they don’t play any game that features a wizard, I believe.

The closest explanation I can come up with is that it’s a play on The Who’s “Tommy” song “Pinball Wizard” and the kid is a video game wizard.

With all the anger being exhibited by the complainers and defenders alike, doesn’t anyone realize that the only one that can settle these disagreements is Matt himself? Shouldn’t the concern be why he is completely silent?
Some may argue that Matt doesn’t owe us a thing for providing free entertainment. It’s true that most expenses for the site come out of his pocket, (those ads on the front page aren’t for decoration) but it doesn’t cost a penny to update a blog with a couple of lines to explain the delay. It’s not like anybody is demanding him to drop fifty bucks on a new quirky device to write about. And if I remember the tale correctly, Matt got his job at Nickelodeon because someone who worked there was looking over another employee’s shoulder as he browsed the site. Didn’t he also have an Amazon wishlist prominently displayed here during the holidays?

How is it possible that he could update the calendar almost regularly during the chaotic weeks before Christmas, but not touch it after it all dies down? I don’t buy the “he’s got a job” excuse because it’s not like he wasn’t at his job every weekday before then. Didn’t he get a vacation after the holidays? Even piled on top of his regular work duties was shopping and preparing to host a Christmas gathering at his place.

We all thought that there might be trouble in Matt’s life until he updated the blog with the sticker entry, so I have little reason to think that something terrible has happened to him now. If the 23rd update is as epic as some people are predicting that it requires several weeks to craft, he should say so. If he wants to keep such a massive, time consuming update a big secret for so long, nobody is going to be around to care when he finally unleashes it. Plus he runs the risk of having it fall short of the high expectations some are projecting. Just remember that even if he does invest a lot of time in the Advent Calendar, he isn’t making a big budget, star studded film that requires multiple takes and massive set construction. He’s taking pictures of toys and scripting them sarcastic dialogue. But what if there are other problems? If Matt has writer’s block, I think we wouldn’t fault him if he told us. We know that he can’t keep the creative fire burning every day. Maybe he’s dreadfully sick, although I can’t imagine it being that big of a chore to drag himself to his computer and spend 4 minutes with a quick update on his situation. If there’s a family tragedy, I can’t see Matt ignoring his baby without even a slight mention. Even in the worst case scenario where he is completely incapacitated, I’d like to think someone he knows in real life would stop by and drop a comment. I seriously doubt that he keeps X-E a secret from his friends and family, especially his girlfriend who has to put up with his “sickness”.

As for X-Entertainment’s street team patrolling this forum, I’m not quite certain the guy you build up as your Lord and Savior would be grateful if you all drove visitors from his site and community. Did he elect you all to be his spokespeople? Matt seems to be one of the most humble guys in the world, and while I’m sure he enjoys your praise, he most likely doesn’t want to be built up as a God. The complaints you complain about mostly stem from devoted fans who may feel abandoned after offering their undying support for years. You can’t expect, about 20 days since the last calendar update, that nobody would notice the complete absence of any activity and start to ask questions. And when those questions are ignored, to start to feel slighted. If you have the audacity to tell these people that they are not real fans, then you most likely don’t know what the term means. Nobody with a fan base pays people to follow them, nor do fans pay in order to extract joy from someone’s work. The volatile anger people are now starting to direct towards Matt is caused by fans who feel he doesn’t care anymore. Even the most vocal of his self-dubbed foot soldiers should agree that there is no excuse for nothingness. Is that how you want to be treated as a faithful fan? Do you guys really want to spend the rest of the year discussing how popcorn scratch and sniff stickers smell like popcorn? Most importantly, nobody likes a suck up, not even the guy who’s on the receiving end of it.

In the end, I feel he does owe an explanation on why there is a delay in the Advent Calendar. He knows that it is the most popular feature of X-Entertainment that keeps people dropping in every day. Plus, as the owner of a site that must have been viewed at least once by everybody with an Internet connection, he should feel compelled to keep the masses informed. ANY excuse would be more acceptable than NO excuse. As an avid reader, I can faithfully say that Matt is one of the most entertaining and talented writers I’ve witnessed. He’s well known for being able to turn shit subjects into golden articles. I’m not going to give up on X-E, but I am concerned. As a final plea to Matt: You don’t have to respond with a new AC update, just tell us how things are going on your side of the computer. We’ll accept anything. We’re your fans.
