Christmas Eve Eve.

The Advent Calendar has been updated through 12/22. I'm going to try to finish #23 between now and tomorrow morning -- try -- but I'm not sure I'll make it. If you've seen the length of the last few, I don't think you can blame me. :) Whatever I don't finish, I'll resume right after Christmas. Late? Yes, but at least you'll have something to do during those cold, sad days after Santa packs it in for another year of bear-like hibernation. (Plus, I think #22 is both suitably celebratory and cliffhangerish to last us a couple of days, if it comes to that.)

The holiday season has blitzed through in what feels like hours, and I'm sitting here wondering how the fuck it's possible that tomorrow is Christmas Eve. It's kind of mind-blowing that by this time tomorrow night, I'll be drunk, full of rumaki and trying to remain upright in my sister's crowded living room while kids zip past with still-wrapped Wii games, screaming loudly. I can't wait.

On Christmas Day, the woman's family is coming here for dinner, and we still aren't prepared. Case in point: A 24-inch Playmobil circus tent remains on the dining room table. We haven't even gone food shopping yet, which bodes for an interesting dinner menu. I assume we'll end up serving jelly beans and toast a la A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Nobody will appreciate the humor in it.

And despite my best efforts, or at least my best half-hearted efforts, I still haven't even finished getting presents for everyone. Thank God for gift cards and holiday-themed scratch-off Lotto cards. Rumors persist that a number of six-year-olds will be receiving them for Christmas.

I'm pumped. Christmas Eve is my favorite day of the year, and nothing can mess that up.

That's our Christmas tree. By the end of the night, ten thousand presents will be underneath it. (Still haven't wrapped them, and I'm honestly desperate enough to comb the paper for some gift wrapping service that will charge me a hundred bucks to cover things in tearaway paper.)

It's a great tree. I feel like I haven't looked at it enough this year, but perhaps that's how I can justify keeping it up until April. Right now, we're writing shopping lists, listening to Christmas songs blare over a dusty old stereo, drinking spiked Cranberry Splash and trying to find the right place to keep my coconut crab taxidermy while company pours in and out of our apartment. It's an atypical and beautiful Christmas, no matter the bullshit.

I want to do one more blog entry before I call it quits until 12/26, but in case I can't, let's get it out of the way now: Merry Christmas, you're all awesome, and you're the reason that I can still enjoy doing this ridiculous website after almost a decade. Have an amazing holiday, and come back prepared to share stories.

This site really kind of made the Christmas season for me this year. I didn’t start checking daily or reading the blog at all until last March.

Tomorrow when I get that rum in me, you all better watch out. I might show up and start laying the love on, thick.

Merry Christmas everyone.. if i don’t get a chance to stop by over the next 48 hours.. – i’m really looking forward to this year’s.. – perception is reality.. – and i’m perceiving this X-Mas to be the best since I received the TMNT Turtle Van back in my tender salad days.. – watching Kung Fu Panda and typing from my couch with my early present MacBook.. – i think tomorrow night I’ll watch the California Raisins Christmas special and sip some Pomegranate 7-Up..

I am working on X-Mas Eve and then fly from San Francisco to Oklahoma City on X-Mas day. This means that I will have X-Mas after X-Mas which is fine with me.

Cameron T., I’m sorry for your situation, and I hope your parents get back on their feet.

Funny thing, I saw Turner and Hooch a while back, and
it stars none other than Mare Winningham. Matt, don’t
worry about the calendar. We know you’ll get it done
eventually. In the meantime, I’m going to YouTube and
wish some atheists a Merry Christmas. If there are
any atheists here, I apologize. Merry Christmas to
you anyway.

See ya. :) .

I’m feeling the love on X-E tonight.

Can’t wait until Xmas Day! I am a wee bit poor this year, so instead of big expensive gifts, or many gifts, I had to think long and hard about each one, and cannot wait for my family to open them!

Yay CHRISTMAS MAGIC!

Matt, thank you for giving me countless hours of entertainment over the years. To pass the time, I sometimes read old articles and entries you did over the past few years, because they never get old.

Your website is awesome. Enjoy Christmas!

Merry Christmas Matt. I very rarely post comments on here, but I am a long time visitor. I absolutely love this site and the excellent blog entries you pump out on a regular basis. All the best to you and yours.

As for Christmas, I’ll be at my mom’s for a feast. And I, I myself will carve the roast beast! lol. Seriously though, it’s just a low-key family affair with my mom, my sister and my niece. My mom makes one hell of a great turkey dinner so I’m certainly looking forward to that. As for tonight, I’ll probably kick back and watch “A Christmas Carol” which is a Christmas Eve tradition of mine. Of course I’ll only watch the 1951 Alastair Sim version which I feel is the DEFINITIVE version of the story. But thankfully my gifts are all bought and wrapped so I’m good to go.

Merry Christmas to you Matt! Thanks for keeping the Christmas spirit alive in me every year.

Almost slammed by Christmas myself. Both kids are old enough to reallly get into Christmas. My boy will be 5 in two months, my girl turned 2 this month. Which means:

A) They are old enough to keep taking the ornaments off the tree. Hence the bottom third of the tree has unbreakable ornaments we bought at CVS. And old enough to create a synergistic vortex of energy that swirls through the house making a mess every 4 hours.

B) The kids just really take up a lot of our time. Not a bad thing, just a thing. A lot of plans I have get tempered and sidetracked. BUT that’s because I realize that “My Christmas Trip” isn’t what it’s all about now. When I get sidetracked and realize I don’t have time to put up the 1000 lights on the house like I did in years previous, there’s a payoff when I hear my son sing the lines to “First Toymaker to the King” or my 2 year old sing the falsetto to “Christmastime is Here”.

C) Today I MUST set the train up under the tree. Anyone who knows me knows I am the train guy. For the love of God, I built a trainset in my backyard even! (Click the link and see a video I shot on Christmas Eve, 2006.) So this year I was thinking that maybe since the kids might wreck it or whatever, I’ll just put it on the backburner. But my friends and even my wife say I can’t NOT have it up! So fortunately, I have 99% of my shopping done. The kids are home, and I have a half day at work. I must do it. I MUST! If Matt can crank out the Advent Calendar despite how busy he is, I WILL get the train set up!

Matt, the tree looks like it’s leaning, about to fall.

Merry Christmas all, and thank you Matt, for what has become an odd but essential part of my holiday season.

Chestnuts roasted by Jason @ 12/24/2008 8:06 AM

As a German on the 24th, I suppose I’ll get my presents in about three to four hours, after the dinner. Decorated the tree on Sunday, it looks awesome. Takes over about half of our living room, too. So, things are pretty normal around here.

Matt. I want to thank you for the calendar. It’s strange, but somehow that thing really, really feels like Christmas to me. It has become an essential part of my holiday celebrations.

Loving the AC, as usual. It has and continues to keep me on the edge of my seat. This really is the Best. Site. Evar! ;-)
I hope everyone has a wonderful and blessed Christmas!

I JUST noticed the decepticon stocking in the background a few minutes ago! I would LOVE to have one!

Merry Christmas everyone!

It’s just turned Christmas Day here. It’s a Wonderful Life just finished. Maybe it’s the eggnog, but my eyes are a little moist. I wanted to wish everyone a Merry Christmas and also to add my thanks to Matt for throwing himself into the season. This Christmas wouldn’t have been as awesome without him. For one thing, X-E would be called Pottersville. Merry Christmas to all, and to all a goodnight!

Yay! Thanks again Matt, this is my favorite holiday past time. There’s only so many times I can watch Yogi’s First Christmas, but I can read this non-stop all season long. Have a merry christmas everyone even though I rarely post here, I wish you and your all the best!

Alexander
From one Model Railroader to another, your backyard layout looks awesome!

I don’t have a train per se, but I DO have the Lego Monorail circling the tree! It’s a rail vehicle!

Well, it’s been a tough season. Worked in retail for the first time since 2000, and man was it rough! Worked out a deal to have Christmas Eve and Day off (not easy!).

Kinda low on cash, so only wifey gets a present and its from “Santa Claus”. We head over to my Grandma’s today with my video camera for the first time to capture CHRISTMAS MAGIC for my daughter as its her first Christmas.

*taps forehead on laptop keyboard*
I think this is turning out to be the most underwhelming Christmas ever. :(
I usually like getting gift cards, but not this year. It seems that this year online retailers are not accepting Vanilla Visa gift cards as a form of money. I experimented with Amazon only to come up with the card not being processed and having to go through the order cancellation crap (Why do they make it so hard to cancel an order now?).
Oh well, I’ll try to keep a cheery state of mind and maybe just maybe I’ll be able to use the gift cards at brick-and-mortar shops on Friday.

I don’t post here as often as I used to, or as often as I should, but a Merry Christmas to you all. This is the first Christmas Eve I’m stuck at work, and it’s pretty lousy, but at least I can enjoy it vicariously through all of you. Thank you for another great Christmas season at X-E, and thanks especially to Matt for all his backbreaking work on the site and the Calendar. God bless you all.

Chestnuts roasted by Rhino @ 12/24/2008 11:44 AM

I’ve heard of kids getting lottery scratch off tickets for Christmas and then totally being into it. And wouldn’t it be right out of a modern sitcom to have 2 or 5 of us come over to wrap all those presents for you, each of us donning a Santa hat? I don’t mind gift cards actually because I know I will like what I am getting when I get one. I think gift cards are more likable then just money stuffed in a greeting card. My Grandma does that every year. I like it of course, but I don’t want to copy my Grandma.

I want to take some video footage with my camcorder this year. I want to do a video tour of my old bedroom for you. You guys would love it. It has care bear wallpaper all over walls with maroon colored carpet. One wall has two Simpsons posters on it. I got them when I was 10. I was trying desperately to cover up the Care Bear wallpaper.

Anyway, my family is going to have Christmas on Saturday. We are having a really bad blizzard here so everyone driving to the same place would be too risky and it’s supposed to clear up by this weekend. My aunt is meeting my best friend and I at a meeting spot and she is going to pick me up. I am going to spend friday night there and Saturday morning she is going to drive to Portland to my Grandparents.

That night she is going to drive back to her place and Sunday afternoon she will drive me back to the meeting spot. I am bringing my laptop so at night I will be able to watch a movie or two w/ headphones on while they sleep and I want to make a video of where I live so people can have a tour without coming to see me lol. I could not tolerate relatives doing unexpected pop ins.

This is my comfort zone and them being in it would not be comforting AT ALL lol. I bet some of you can relate. But the benefit of having a delayed Christmas is I get to spend Christmas with my online friends and also later in the week my relatives. Harry and I did a little Christmas stuff tonight. He opened both of his presents.

Snapfish was having a promotion where you just paid shipping for a 20 page photobook so I got him that with some photos in it and captions. Some inside jokes we have and just some nice things. He loved it and said that it was the best present anyone has ever gotten him so kudos for that. Snapfish is always having a sale on something from what I have noticed.

I also got him a tin of gourmet licorice. Those little Scotti terrier dog ones. He automatically handed me one before he took out one for himself. I said you handed me one first? He said of course I always share with you. Isn’t that the freakin sweetest thing? lol!! We always share but it was just nice to see the natural handing a piece to me first. They are a little harder then I like but the taste was really good. I like really soft black licorice. I also got him some Gourmet Egg Nog Salt Water Taffy that is good if you like Egg Nog. Both the Licorice and the Taffy were at walmart I bought them Monday night.

Matt, I can’t thank you enough. I’ve been here since your second year on this site, and I’ve always been extremely impressed how much time and money you always put into this thing! Especially during the holidays! Personally, I think I would break down due to all the stress, but somehow you always pull through. The advent calendar always gives me a reason to get up on December mornings, so thanks a lot and MERRY CHRISTMAS!
