Christmas Eve Eve.

The Advent Calendar has been updated through 12/22. I'm going to try to finish #23 between now and tomorrow morning -- try -- but I'm not sure I'll make it. If you've seen the length of the last few, I don't think you can blame me. :) Whatever I don't finish, I'll resume right after Christmas. Late? Yes, but at least you'll have something to do during those cold, sad days after Santa packs it in for another year of bear-like hibernation. (Plus, I think #22 is both suitably celebratory and cliffhangerish to last us a couple of days, if it comes to that.)

The holiday season has blitzed through in what feels like hours, and I'm sitting here wondering how the fuck it's possible that tomorrow is Christmas Eve. It's kind of mind-blowing that by this time tomorrow night, I'll be drunk, full of rumaki and trying to remain upright in my sister's crowded living room while kids zip past with still-wrapped Wii games, screaming loudly. I can't wait.

On Christmas Day, the woman's family is coming here for dinner, and we still aren't prepared. Case in point: A 24-inch Playmobil circus tent remains on the dining room table. We haven't even gone food shopping yet, which bodes for an interesting dinner menu. I assume we'll end up serving jelly beans and toast a la A Charlie Brown Thanksgiving. Nobody will appreciate the humor in it.

And despite my best efforts, or at least my best half-hearted efforts, I still haven't even finished getting presents for everyone. Thank God for gift cards and holiday-themed scratch-off Lotto cards. Rumors persist that a number of six-year-olds will be receiving them for Christmas.

I'm pumped. Christmas Eve is my favorite day of the year, and nothing can mess that up.

That's our Christmas tree. By the end of the night, ten thousand presents will be underneath it. (Still haven't wrapped them, and I'm honestly desperate enough to comb the paper for some gift wrapping service that will charge me a hundred bucks to cover things in tearaway paper.)

It's a great tree. I feel like I haven't looked at it enough this year, but perhaps that's how I can justify keeping it up until April. Right now, we're writing shopping lists, listening to Christmas songs blare over a dusty old stereo, drinking spiked Cranberry Splash and trying to find the right place to keep my coconut crab taxidermy while company pours in and out of our apartment. It's an atypical and beautiful Christmas, no matter the bullshit.

I want to do one more blog entry before I call it quits until 12/26, but in case I can't, let's get it out of the way now: Merry Christmas, you're all awesome, and you're the reason that I can still enjoy doing this ridiculous website after almost a decade. Have an amazing holiday, and come back prepared to share stories.

Comments are open -- talk about your Christmas!

It was said earlier and I’ll say it again:

THANKS MATT. THIS IS THE BEST SITE ON THE WEB.

And to all the folks that post here:

MERRY CHRISTMAS

I hope everyone has the holiday the dream for, and for those who’s holiday takes an unexpectedly bad turn, remember that there are many out there who’s thoughts are always with you.

Even though I don’t post that often, I read just about every day.

You guys kick ass! Oh yeah, and you make it possible to get through the day knowing I’m not alone in my strange interests and likes. :-)

Love to you all.

Spike.

I almost forgot,a Decepticon stocking is a CLASSY stocking.

Mars, the list of 20 dollar Wii games is an unlimited realm of horrors. It’s even worse than the PlayStation 1 budget games used to be!

Mandy,is there something to use WiiSpeak for even if you don’t have Animal Crossing?

Ultraman,I know what you mean. I was out at some stores too,and Jesus Christ. I did snag Hellboy on DVD for 10 bucks, though.

EVERYBODY-
I really feel like I know all of you just from reading and posting comments on this blog. You’re more than just random screen names, you’re random screen names I like. :)
If I list names I’ll leave someone out,so merry Christmas to every X-Eer and X-Ette!

My Christmas has been the opposite of Matt’s…other than my tree is just as full. The only thing I had to do today was make a pudding pie for my dad’s girlfriend’s annual Christmas Eve party and do my laundry. I spent the rest of the day watching “Christmas Story,” “It’s A Wonderful Life,” and “National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation.” My presents are wrapped (or, if they’re edible, packed in festive Ziploc containers) and in bags, ready to be brought to the appropriate friend or relative. My tree has long been decorated. I finished what shopping I could afford two weeks ago. The first disc of “Now That’s What I Call Christmas!” is running on my CD player as I type this. It feels weird to be more-or-less done when everyone else I know is still running to wrap gifts and shop and make food. Weird…but kinda nice.

The Advent Calender goes to James Lipton, who doubles our pleasure, doubles our firepower. A remarkablous holiday to the men and their hat!

Matt, your tree never ceases to amaze me. If you tried to put anything else on it, I think it would burst. My nephew would so love that Transformers stocking. I bet my brother would too. I actually bought the kid the Robot Heroes Transformers for Christmas. It’s nice to pass the good stuff on to the next two generations.

I’ll be around tomorrow night after Dad’s girlfriend’s Christmas Eve party, but for those of you who’ll be elsewhere, I wish you all the happiest of holidays and the merriest of Christmases!

James Lipton is the greatest person on the face of the planet.

RIP to Ted and not evil clown.

I had a good birthday today. Got the Dark Knight DVD and a Superman novel. Also ate at Red Robin, the greatest burger place in the world.

Merry Christmas Matt and all my fellow X-er’s.

My Christmas season has been remarkablous, simply remarkablous, and it’s all because of you Matt.

Seriously, coming here for the advent calendar and reading your blog posts are the only Christmasy things I have done so far. I need to get my shit together tomorrow…

Merry Christmas Matt and to all the X-Ers out there.

Man, I am right there with you. We haven’t finished shopping, we are baking cookies right now for tomorrow’s festivities, and we still haven’t crammed in enough Christmas cheer.

Going into the final stretch, I feel that Christmas 2008 will just go in the “okay” file. Last year was a tough one to top but this year didn’t even come close (so far). I guess there still could be a Christmas miracle but it would exist to salvage this year’s malaise. Oh well, it’s Christmas. And a so-so Christmas is still better than no-Christmas at all. I have a lot to be grateful for.
Take care and God bless us all, everyone.

Does everyone remember when you were a kid and Christmas seemed like an eternity away from December 1st? Now it seems like I’m hurling through time. Christmas Eve starts in one hour!

Kid Nicky: My true personality shines through in my posts. So really, you DO know the real me, and vice versa. :)

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 12/24/2008 12:01 AM

Jeff Mack: I know EXACTLY what you mean! When I was a youngin Christmas seemed to take YEARS to get here! lol. Now it seems like it all comes and goes in a week TOPS! I guess it’s only natural that yur perception of time changes as you grow up.

We love you, Matt! I am so glad you have continued your updates for so long. This is the first year I’ve read the Advent Calendar, and I absolutely adore it. Even when it’s a few days late, it gives me something nice to look forward to during random web surfing. I love Mista Snowman so much!!

Chestnuts roasted by Bunny @ 12/24/2008 12:09 AM

Yeah Matt, thanks for bringing the Joy to us all for so long!! From this point forward, you have established a position in which Christmas time would definitely not be the same without you. Hell, I guess that goes for everyday web browsing year round as well!

One day, a friend and I were talkig about that old game “Crossfire”. I google imaged it, and through that, I found XE…ever since then, its been making me happy just about every day. For this, the articles (esp the atlantic city/wildwood ones…close to the heart as well), the blogs, and everything else, I thank you Matt.

Bottom of the heart, thank you.

I feel stupid bringing this up so late in this year’s calendar but… When did this “crabs destroy the house” thing happen? I thought it seemed familiar when I first read it this year but when I checked last year’s offering it seemed like Kuse was not catatonic and the house was still there. I’m only partly sure I remember the house being destroyed, but I don’t remember when.

Chestnuts roasted by noctem @ 12/24/2008 12:34 AM

Holy shit.

I just had the white album playing while I was starting the 22nd, and when the *SPOILERS* fight scene starts, back in the USSR was playing, and once Ted gets hit with hand energy, Dear Prudence popped in. It synched so beautifully.

I hope everyone has a healthy, happy Christmas!
Thank you for keeping me entertained throughout the season. It’s really hard to get into the spirit of things when work kicks my ass every day, but visits here always help. :)

noctem:The house was destroyed in the summer before this years Calendar started.

I was just reading the latest AC entry when my wife came over and said “Jeez, you’re addicted to this website!” She is 100% correct. Thanks Matt for keeping me in the Christmas mood despite the fact that Im working tomorrow and Christmas day, AND on call Christmas night. Your hard work is not in vain! Merry Christmas to everyone here!

Matt hands down the best advent yet, the hard work you put into it shows. A hundred kudos to you. The December articles have been great as well. Just wanted to say that because this blog has been a bright spot in my long December. X-Enertainment Rocks the cock!

Merry Christmas XE!

It is a strange Christmas this year. I’m here by myself (and will leave to go home on Boxing Day). I’m going over to some friends for Christmas dinner, but Christmas day proper will be just me. It will be a quiet day.

My parents lost their jobs earlier this month so I don’t expect to get any presents. They told me to write them something for Christmas. I’m scrambling to get it done but right now I just have writer’s block. The good news is I pretty much have all day tomorrow to work on it, and all day Christmas day….I just hope I can get my ass in gear because I would hate to show up on the doorstep without ANY gift at all.

Anyway, Matt as always you have provided so much happiness to us all during this season. God bless you.

I’m sure I’ll be around on the blog Christmas Eve and Day but for those that aren’t, MERRY CHRISTMAS!!!

Chestnuts roasted by Cameron T. @ 12/24/2008 1:03 AM

I have always wanted to know if the AC was set up all season long somewhere in a spare bedroom, or sitting in the middle of a living room. I guess now I can figure that it get disassembled every day or so.

Thanks for the great work you do Matt! I, like many other have been coming for a long while. Hell when I first started coming here I was in College. Now I’m married with 2 kids and the 3rd on the way!

This year, hasn’t been my happiest. The only thing that I have done for myself this season is make sure I keep up to date on the AC. Tonight I got to finally watch Christmas Vacation and drink out of my Taz mug like Clark has at work(it’s the closest I have to drinking out of moose head cups)

Anyway, Merry Christmas to Matt and everyone!

Thanks for the post, Matt! And thank you to the people who responded to my survey on Saturday(favorite Christmas Album)!

To add my own two cents to that topic, my favorite Christmas albums have to be, the Beach Boys Ultimate Christmas, A Christmas Gift to You from Phil Spector, and Brian Wilson’s What I Really Want For Christmas. The Phil Spector one has a lot of childhood memories because I used to hear most of the songs off that album on the oldies station around Christmas (and still do).

Most of you know the song “Christmas(Baby Please Come Home)” from the movie Gremlins. I remember that song, but I never saw Gremlins until a few weeks ago. I mostly remember the song from the local oldies station. I read that Darlene Love performs the song annually on David Letterman around Christmas. We oughta watch for that.

When more games are made for it, there will be more usage of Wii Speak. Just like the other Wii attachments.

Wii Shovelware definitely ranks among the depths of horrors to lenghts of PS1 and GBA.

As for Advent: Fucking love Lipton. Just when I thought I could’ve loved him enough, he saves the day! Again! With a double! Now he can TRULY interview himself!

If This Year’s Day 23 will be as any good as last year’s…Take your time, Matt. I’ll be here waiting.
