12/13/2008: BUMBLE CHASE.

The Advent Calendar has been updated through December 12th. Hopefully, I’ll be back on schedule by the end of the weekend.

Introducing BUMBLE CHASE, a new kind of battery-operated stuff-moves-across-a-surface holiday decoration/toy thingy! Eerily similar to the Peanuts Prowling Pumpkin Patch that I reviewed last year! Did I need another such item? No!

To tell you the truth, I bought it at the start of the season as a contingency plan, not knowing if the retail world was going to provide me with enough material to slink through an entire month of blog posts. As it turns out, it did, but I’ve grown so fond of my BUMBLE CHASE that I’m going to review it anyway. (Behind the scenes at X-E is an incredible party.)

What it is: An icy, battery-operated base that plays music from Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, while pushing a quartet of magnet-boosted figures in a vaguely oval pattern. I’d probably come up with something catchier if I was writing its catalog description, but I’m not, so that’s what it is.

The moving figures include Rudolph, Hermey, Yukon and Bumble. (Some prefer to call him “The Bumble” — I do not.) My fascination with yetis makes Bumble my favorite character from the TV special, narrowly edging out the spotted elephant who masterfully danced on one foot while singing about how fucking miserable he was.

Though Bumble converted to heroism by the end of the special, we must assume that he’s still in full-on villain mode here. It certainly helps explain why the four figures chase each other in circles for fifteen seconds whenever you hit the magic button. If Bumble isn’t trying to eat them, what else could be happening? Are they playing tag? That’s so not canonical.

The finale! The figures move, the music plays, and all is well. No clue how CVS gets away with charging $20 each for these sets, but since I bought one, I appear to be part of the problem. Happy SNT. Back with more later.

I was never a big fan of Rudolph. He whines and moans, and Santa and crew come off as giant douchebags.

Ghosted by Jeff Mack @ 12/13/2008 8:57 PM EST

I love that thing!

Ghosted by Nickelodeon @ 12/13/2008 8:59 PM EST

That video changed my life!

Ghosted by Mario! @ 12/13/2008 9:01 PM EST

I’m drinking Strongbow and watching The Muppet Christmas Carol tonight (Michael Caine makes a great Scrooge).

Also, I decorated my first wreath today. Not bad for a beginner if I do say so myself (click my name to see it!)

Ghosted by Cheetara @ 12/13/2008 9:01 PM EST

Jeff, I’m with you on this one. I was never comfortable that Rudolf had a girl’s voice.

Ghosted by Bill @ 12/13/2008 9:02 PM EST

Okay, my Christmas cheer has been struggling lately, but for some reason the Bumble Chase just made me react like Mistah Snowman. I literally yelped with glee and bounced up and down. I have no idea why, since Rudolph is pretty low on my list of favorite specials. My Christmas spirit is wildly unpredictable.

The Miser Brother’s special is on now.

I noted they had a token black elf.

Hooray! New Advent Calendar!

Question: is this new special actual stop motion, or CGI that looks like stop motion? I can’t even tell any more.

Also: Tinsel is cute.

Seems smart that they gave those figures a little ice platform to keep them from falling over. I still don’t like CVS, though. Walgreens’ seasonal aisle for life!!

Ghosted by Eddie Lightning Frog @ 12/13/2008 9:26 PM EST

Heat Miser reminds me of Bam Bam Bigelow.

I’m a fan of these “icy, battery-operated base that plays music from Rudolph The Red-Nosed Reindeer, while pushing a quartet of magnet-boosted figures in a vaguely oval pattern.” type things. My Aunt had one that had characters ice staking, as much as I hate any winter sport, or being outside in the winter it make me want to join in!

Off to read me some advent!

There is something off with the new Miser Brothers…It’s those eyes I think… those souless, dead eyes.

On an unrelated note, I have a nasty sore throat that is making me sound like Dr. Girlfriend from Venture Bros.

Hey everybody. It’s good to be back in Christmas mode. I kinda spent too much of my cheer during the Thanksgiving week and Christmas has been put on the back burner due to the end of the semester, upcoming Finals, finishing grading and PROJECT X.
I hesitate to tell you about PROJECT X because, although I am not a superstitious person, if I tell you about it it will be a let down if it doesn’t happen. I won’t know the outcome of PROJECT X until February so I will keep you posted.

Off to read the calendar (I am VERY behind).

Just finished watchin A Miser Brothers Christmas, and just as I expected, I LOVED it !!! The models, animation, voices, songs, story, EVERYTHING was AWESOME!!!! Oh, and before I forget, HAPPY SNT YA’LL!!! =D I passed out a few times today because of some delicious hot food. That combined with the cold caused me to konk out for an hour, twice. I’m up and ready to go now though. Also, I got some company today. My grandma and her very close friend( who is without a doubt one of the NICEST people you could EVER meet) stopped by and gave me an early Christmas present. A $50.00 Walmart giftcard! I know some of ya’ll don’t like giftcards that much, but I do. Came in a nice and neat package too. They’re stayin the night. Course it’s not just me here. Some other family’s here with me. Were havin a real Christmassy good time =) I’ll be around for some Brawlin later if any ya’ll are interested. BTW,Nice purchase Matt.

When I was a kid, I used to somehow get the Bumble (take that, Matt) and the Wampa from ESB confused. I thought they were one and the same. Now that I realize they are indeed separate fictional snowbeasts, I instead wonder who would win in a battle between the two. Anyone else care to speculate? I vote the Bumble cuz well, Bumbles bounce!

Wow, He-Man and She-Ra Christmas Special is on YTV in Canada. I don’t remember ever seeing this, and thats not a bad thing.

Ghosted by Jamie G @ 12/13/2008 10:18 PM EST

Speak NO ill of the HeMan SheRa Christmas Special!!

Ghosted by Beckner @ 12/13/2008 10:22 PM EST

I finished watching a Miser Brother’s Christmas… Does anyone else think Earthquake should have had a bigger part? Great little scene, there.

Ghosted by DarthPez @ 12/13/2008 10:28 PM EST

Heman shera is part of our christmas tradition every year. Really sucks not having cable this time of year. We have most everything on dvd but we miss out on things like the Miser brothers and 3rd and 4th level B & R specials like Frosty & Ruddy in july.

Ghosted by thejyav @ 12/13/2008 10:43 PM EST

I didn’t see the Miser Brothers Christmas… I DID, however, finish my Xmas shopping. So now I have more time to read the calendar.

Ghosted by DocDragon @ 12/13/2008 10:46 PM EST

Very nice wreath, Cheetara!

Outside of shovelling snow, I took pictures of my white kitty in the snow, and was sort of a bum today. ;)

Ghosted by Moony @ 12/13/2008 10:47 PM EST

Moony: Being a bum is a big part of Christmas. =)

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 12/13/2008 10:51 PM EST

Still no cable at home, and not much reason to justify the cost anymore. I hope Miser Bros. Christmas winds up on YouTube (and it probably will, but I hope it will SOON).

Ghosted by Mars @ 12/13/2008 10:56 PM EST

Moony: Thank you! I thought about getting battery-operated lights for it (I live in an apartment with no outlets at the front door), but remembered Matt saying that it took like four batteries to power one tiny strand.

ULTRAMAN: True that. Today I was just thinking about how I miss those long, lazy breaks you used to get in school where you’d basically do jack shit for a few weeks. Then you get old and have to go to work. *sigh* All we get is Christmas Day at my company. One measly day is not enough time to properly celebrate the holidays!

Ghosted by Cheetara @ 12/13/2008 11:03 PM EST

For the canadian X-E-ers, the Ren & Stimpy Yaksmas Special is on now. I don’t see that one nearly often enough.

Ghosted by DocDragon @ 12/13/2008 11:09 PM EST

I think that music is kind of creepy in the Bumble Chase. It reminds me of the mall music in the original Dawn of the Dead for some reason.

Ghosted by Jack @ 12/13/2008 11:14 PM EST

I missed Miser Brothers, but I DVR’d it. I’m seeing good reviews here, but I think that the Miser puppets looked AWFUL. Did Michael McKean reprise Snowmiser? Because he really was a good fit for the character in that live-action abomination.

Also: SWINE IS FINE!

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 12/13/2008 11:28 PM EST

Ah, just saw the commercial for The Christmas Story marathon on TBS.”Ralphyyyyyyy!”

Ghosted by Bill @ 12/13/2008 11:30 PM EST

Invader Norbert: The original voice of Santa and Heatmiser reutrned for the special. I personally thought the models for the original were bad, but to each their own I guess.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 12/13/2008 11:33 PM EST

Hear ye, hear ye. I have two urgent points to deliver.

1. As a follower of “Bob”, I am a direct descendant of yetis. No kidding. I am Betty the Yeti. You can’t mess around with the yetisyn, we’re abominable.

2. I had an X-E Dream last night!!! SNT was a physical event, that you go to, and you ride around in bumper cars. No guest appearances by any of you specifically, but I was a major outcast with a chip on my shoulder and a real demon behind the wheel of a bumper car. There was a chase scene and everything. I also had a talking dog.

Praise SNT!!!

Ghosted by Rev. Back It On Up 13 @ 12/13/2008 11:37 PM EST

Bill: Man, I can’t wait to watch that a time or seven.

Ghosted by Cheetara @ 12/13/2008 11:43 PM EST

I have that He-Man She-Ra DVD and it rules! Especially the interview segments where everybody acts so EARNEST about the She-Ra musical number.
Cool wreath!
I saw Bam Bam Bigelow live once. It was King of the Ring 95,which some of you may recall was the worst PPV ever. Those tattoos on his head had to fucking hurt.

Ghosted by Kid Nicky @ 12/13/2008 11:45 PM EST

Rev. I think it would be fun to play against you in bumper cars.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 12/13/2008 11:47 PM EST

Ultraman: I’m hell on bumpers.

Heehee – Helen Bumpers.

There are no CVS on the west coast. I miss them and the packs of random shifty comics that I’d buy there. Allentown cvs bigups!

Ghosted by Bartleby @ 12/13/2008 11:56 PM EST

The Miser Brothers was pretty good . It seemed like a rehash of A Year Without a Santa Claus , but i still enjoyed it . Was Kenneth Branagh the North Wind , sounded like him and the puppet looked alot like him too, if you dont know he was on the Harry Potter movie as Professor Gilderoy Lockhart really arrogant and snooty dark arts teacher

Ghosted by Starscream77 @ 12/14/2008 12:05 AM EST

I love the CVS on the border of Collingswood and Oaklyn. I actually did see this there, but unlike Matt, not only could I not justify spending the 20 bucks, I genuinely do not have the room for it.

Despite a very long day that involved a very, very long walk after getting off at a totally wrong bus stop in the middle of nowhere, my Christmas spirit is quite high at the moment. I got to see at least a half-hour of “The Nutcracker,” then went out to dinner with a girlfriend and finished my Christmas shopping at the Hamilton Mall in Mays Landing, NJ. Though we almost missed the bus going home twice, once I finally got on the darn thing, it was really enjoyable. There was no traffic whatsoever on the White Horse Pike. The White Horse Pike is mostly teeny-tiny towns like Pomona with lots of space, some of them situated on farmland, so there was lots of room for people to go crazy with massive light displays. They really warmed my heart (literally after my long day).

Cheetara, I will be trapped in a house with 15 people for Christmas. I need The Christmas Story. I can not emphasize the word “need” enough. Oh, and beer. That too will be emphasized.

I saw this and so wanted to but it, but I do have enough Christmas garb around my house to begin with and I am trying to take on a buy nothing vow until my house is decluttered. But if I give it to my son as a gift it’s different, right?

Ghosted by kb @ 12/14/2008 12:18 AM EST

kb, I can’t tell you how many times I’ve used that as an excuse.

Ghosted by Shelby @ 12/14/2008 12:27 AM EST

We had our family Christmas party at our great grandmas apartments rec center today. They made sliders, had ham, macaroni salad, cheesy potatoes, baked beans, cookies, and pumpkin bundt cake. Played dominoes. Also got some Christmas money as a gift, which I promptly spent on used DVD’s. A good day.

Ghosted by JLAJRC @ 12/14/2008 12:31 AM EST

Bill: No matter how many times I see it, it still makes me laugh like a loon.

JLAJRC: Did you by chance play Mexican train dominoes?

Ghosted by Cheetara @ 12/14/2008 12:36 AM EST

I know! Every time I think I have a favorite part of the movie, I watch it again and change my mind. Still though, I loved it when Ralphy blamed Schwartz for dropping the F-bomb and you could hear his mom beating the snot out of him over the phone. “What’d I do, Ma? What’d I do?” Hilarious!

Ghosted by Bill @ 12/14/2008 12:48 AM EST

I have to say Bam Bam was awesome in his prime.

Ghosted by thejyav @ 12/14/2008 12:48 AM EST

Well, I just watched the Batman: Brave and the Bold Christmas episode that aired last night and still need to watch a few more programs before the big day arrives. Hard to believe we are under two weeks before Christmas. Crazy how fast time flies….

Happy SNT everyone!
