You are all doomed. Why not surrender? We might let you live.

12/11/2008: KB, Khristmas, Krispies.

The fact that it’s already December 10th tells me that the season is moving much too fast, but on the bright side, there are still fifteen days left. Twenty if you count all the way through New Year’s. For the sake of five extra days, I will.

Tonight is egg nog night. If you think you recognize the cup that holds my egg nog, you’re probably right. Click here to verify. I’m still mulling over which Christmas movie will mesh best with this goblet full of creamy joy, but I guess it doesn’t matter much since I’ve already begun drinking the nog and am certain to pass out ten minutes after hitting the play button.

Was really, really sad to hear the news about KB Toys shutting down. I guess it isn’t surprising. KB has been struggling for years, and it never managed to be the “premiere” destination for…well, anything. Still, the loss of one of the only toy store chains that randomly pops up in shopping malls is a nasty hit, especially for those of us who grew up with the former “Kay Bee” and felt some odd, alien form of kinship with it.

I could do a whole post on Kay Bee/KB memories, but I’m not that ambitious. Instead, you only get one. I actually wrote about this in an ancient article, but I think I’m allowed to tell the same story twice in a seven year period.

I call it: “The Wingnut and Scumbug Incident.”

Sixth grade. I was a Ninja Turtles toy addict, and I’d managed to collect every single action figure in the first few “waves.” After a drought that felt like centuries, Playmates finally unveiled four new figures: Muckman, Mondo Gecko, Wingnut and Scumbug. They were impossible to find, and I say this will all confidence because I searched for them every single day.

I eventually located Muckman, but it would be several weeks before I spotted any of the others. (Forget about Mondo Gecko — that was like trying to track down Osama.) One day, I went to the mall with my sister, who left me in KB to go shopping for clothes or some other bullshit.

I blasted over to the Ninja Turtles aisle with cautious hope, and couldn’t believe what I saw. Wingnut and Scumbug. Finding one of the new TMNT figures was a legendary experience, but finding two at the same time? I knew the Lord chose me.

Anyway, I only had a few dollars. Enough to buy one figure, but not both. The line at the store was growing rapidly, and the beads of sweat tripled by the second as I struggled to choose which figure to go home with. Ultimately, I decided that I couldn’t leave with just one, and waited for my sister to return, thinking she’d front me the money for the second figure. I stood there holding Wingnut and Scumbug for thirty minutes, easy.

When my sister returned, she said the line was way too long, reprimanded me for being greedy, and made me leave without getting either action figure. It was the most awful experience anyone has ever had, alive or dead.

Au revoir, KB Toys. You will be remembered. Especially if you have awesome liquidation sales before you go.

I’m about halfway done getting my family’s five thousand children their Christmas presents. Most of them wanted Wii games, which is terrific if you’re looking to spend fifty fucking dollars a pop on Christmas presents for 800 kids. Seriously…nobody likes crayons anymore?

Nah, the truth is, I could’ve easily chose less-pricey gifts if I dug through their Amazon lists a little heavier, but I pride myself on giving out good Christmas presents. I think I’d need therapy if I ever saw a kid make a pissy face after opening something I wrapped for them.

I also like to think that I’m pretty good at figuring out what kids really want, because if you’ve ever gone through a child’s Amazon wishlist, you’ll agree that they get a little trigger happy and add random crap that they couldn’t possibly be seriously interested in.

Case in point: One of my nephews had one of those “Live Butterfly Garden” kits on his wishlist. I’m all for encouraging an interest in the animal kingdom, but 10 to 1, that thing would sit unopened at the top of his bedroom closet from Christmas morning until the day he leaves for college. And then someone will throw it away. At least, that’s how I’ve envisioned it happening in the screenplay I’ve been writing based on this hypothetical event. I’ve already sent feelers out to Danny Elfman to handle the score.

Are these new? I’m sure they’re not, but I like to consider everything I find at the store for review purposes as brand new. It’s a problem I have.

New or not, they are a tribute to Christmas, and they deserve archiving. From Kellogg’s, it’s boxes of Rice Krispies Treats with red and green bits mixed in. Holiday Krispies Treats! While it’s true that homemade Rice Krispies Treats are six trillion times better than the pre-prepared storebought variety, it’s also true that few of us will bother to make them without the encouragement of some grade school bake sale charity drive flyer. I’m in no position to receive such a flyer, so these will do just fine.

The Advent Calendar has been updated for December 10th. December 10th was yesterday. I did good!!

Norbert, sorry, I’ve had this name since 1959, soooo you’re using MY name, ya? :) Kidding, kidding, I just get tired of the whole ‘net name’ thing and like to be myself. If it’s a protocol thing here, I’ll change, ‘K?

Oh, the tales I can tell of Children’s Palace and the whole ‘World of Nintendo’ cockup. Part of their downfall that, along with the ‘let’s carry LIVE ANIMALS!’ (yes, for real. Hartz Mountain did rackjobbing on birds, fish and gerbil. ‘huge margin’ it was claimed. we ALL said NOOOOO but corporate didn’t listen. Idiots) fiasco and the final nail, when the buyer spent EVERY SINGLE PENNY of the remaining open-to-buy on thousands and thousands of made-in-China generic baby dolls. From a couple inches tall to over life size. “this is GREAT there’s a 400% markup on these! We can have a half price sale and STILL make a huge profit!!” and what did kids want in ‘91? Oopsie Baby and New Kids on the Block and TMNT. NOT GENERIC BABY DOLLS.

hey guys.. So, has anyone seen this Christmas-related YouTube video (”for kids”)? It’s not really Christmassy, but it only appeared on a Christmas special, and hasn’t been seen since, which led most people to believed it’s banned, but really not. It’s from a 70’s TV show I think, and well, the dialog and songs are a bit, well..I guess you’ll have to see it for yourself.

I totaly had Mondo Gecko, complete with badass fan powered skateboared. I had no idea how rare it was. I feel like I need to go rumage in my parents garage, find him and set him up in a display case on my entertainment center.

I used to work at KB Toys, so their closing is bittersweet for me. I hated working there, but I LOVED shopping there as a kid. That’s why I wanted to work there in the first place. Bad idea. My only real concern is for the old lady that I worked with. I bought stuff from her as a kid, worked with her as a teen, and felt sorry for her for still being there when I walked past the store as an adult. What will she do with her life now??

Ahh, another one bites the dust in favor of bigger business a la Woolworths, Bradleys, Almacs, Zayre*s, 5 & 10c shops. I did think they were already gone since I haven’t seen on in ages. Granted I can find anything I want now at a cheap price without searching too hard, it was nice to have a dedicated toy store.

Moving on to TMNT. That was my brother’s ‘thing’, but I still managed to get in involved since he was footing the bill buying all of them. I think we had the new releases save for Mondo Gecko, since he was a bit too clean cut. I remember agonizing over whether they were actually on the good or bad side, since depending on what package you bought, they would be on the reverse in a different section. I’d read every piece of text on it, to try and figure it out, but don’t think I ever got it. Looking back, I think they were just agnostic about the turtle’s existance and were there to generate more sales. But as a kid, such things had to have a deeper purpose. Like many posted already, they went out of control, and we got mini turtles, and mega turtles, and rabbits or something. I’m convinced many didn’t even have any screen time to back up their existance.

And finally mugs. My annual trip to the Christmas Tree shop (which sells everything except Christmas Trees), would net me some holiday items. I bought a mug one year that had some metallic paint to give it a shine. I made myself cocoa on Christmas day and heated it in the microwave. After about 2 seconds, I saw bright lights rivaling my decorations and quickly opened the door. The metallic paint didn’t do too well under radiation. But on the bright side, it did make a cool crackle pattern, for which I was quite proud.

WTF IS UP WITH THAT CLOWN??? Sorry for my incoherency, but it’s morning and I had a series of rather disturbing dreams last night and now I’m kinda groggy and dizzy.

Out of curiosity, does anyone remember these rude ‘n crude action figures from about the early ’90s? I just remember two were called Loaded Diaper (a badass baby), and Tyrannosaurus Axe (a dinosaur on a skateboard or something), and the commercial featured some tough guy on a motorbike getting swarmed by them with the slogan, “Tough? Not tough enough!” It was my favorite commercial when I was about 10.

Matt,

I had a similar experience with one of the He-Man waves. It was the one with “The Ghost of Skeletor” or some such nonsense… I couldn’t find ANY of those action figures anywhere and I wanted them soooo bad. I moped around the house and quit playing with my other Masters of the Universe figures. What was the use of playing with them if I didn’t have ALL of them? Anyway my birthday was fast approaching and I thought, “Maybe mom will remember that I’ve wanted them for so long and I’ll get one or two of them.” Well imagine my surprise when she bought me the ENTIRE wave. I love my mom…

A random KB toys memory of mine: KB regularly had specials on older action figures where you could buy 3 for ten bucks, or something similar. This instance was shortly after the 1989 Batman toy craze was starting to die down. I already had the Batmobile, many of the figures, even the Batman cereal that came shrinkwrapped with a plastic Batman cereal bowl. C’mon, I know some of you remember those bowls… I even had the Batman soundtrack on cassette, and two copies of the single. I don’t know why, but I did. Anyhow, I found myself at KB Toys in the mall, and they were having one of the aforementioned “3 for $10″ sales on Batman action figures. And of course, as luck would have it, the rack was full of Bob figures. Twenty or thirty Bobs, and nothing else. Well, I had ten bucks burning a hole in my TMNT canvas wallet, and Bob seemed to have a look on his face like he was the last kid picked in gym class. I went home with 3 Bob figures that day.

i spent my entire lunch break at walmart looking for a “snow bunny padame” figure for my boyfriend only to find one just sitting on the shelf at kb about 3 times. it both made me mad (this is a chase figure i was told) but also made me think about the kids who end up going in for that one special figure and see it there so easy to get.

Prairie Farms Candy Cane Milk is DELICIOUS, although it tastes more like a minty eggnog than milk. It’s very rich and creamy. A++++++++++

I LOVE KB. I worked there for years. It’s like a second home. Damn.

Matt, you always talk about that wave of TMNT figures being hard to find, but I remember just walking into any random store and buying them. Mondo and Stinkbug were my favorites. And I agree with you guys, the line got shitty after like 2 years. It was good though, because if it had been going strong,I would have felt bad about giving it up.

If you have a KB in your local locality, and have extra money, or a pirate’s heart, by all means loot the joint like there’s no tomorrow! In the name of X-Entertainment, loot like a Viking! Loot, loot, loot, loot with a lute if you have to. Some places that are going down will even sell store fixtures, who knows what you can get for cheap?

Ghosted by kingklash @ 12/12/2008 1:08 PM EST

Noooooo! KBToys is the only place I can find the Bandai Creation Godzilla figures! Stink!

Ghosted by Vaporman @ 12/12/2008 1:41 PM EST

Oh maaaan.

I myself did not own any TMNT toys, but every boy I knew did. I used to play TMNT with my best friend Maurice, and he had like… three dozen.
My little brother had a few too.

Since I didn’t own any and was completely obsessed with action figures (the reason I’m a Character Desginer!) I pored over every ninja turtles figure I came across. I remember that Usagi Yojimbo’s ears came out of a purple tie and moved independently, that Wingnut’s toes had these awesome claws that could hold Leonardo’s swords… I remember the Red mecha-bull guy whose real hoof was cracked and split by mold, the dragon guy whose neck was hdden in his torso and you could stretch it out so it was SUPER long, the rock trooper whose helmet WAS a turtle shell…

I can look at each one that I’d ever seen and tell you details you’d never have remembered. I can imagine finding a site of all the TMNT waves and imagining holding every single one and telling detailss that picture can’t tell you…

I wonder if my brother still has them.

TMNT was a master at creating the most amazingly detailed and articulate toys of their time.

Ghosted by Muppet Baby @ 12/12/2008 2:21 PM EST

I like Gremlins, but love Gremlins II The New Batch.
Is it sad that I consider Gremlins II one of the best films ever made? Oddly predicting that one day their will be 100 channels devoted to everything, in jokes which refer to old Roger Korman flicks, acknowledging the fact that CNN actually has a pre-made newsreel for Armageddon? A scene in the film release and the VHS, where the monster takes over your TV screen or VCR?

Ghosted by Tresjolie9 @ 12/12/2008 2:36 PM EST

Kittymao-What the hell is a character designer? I was just saying to my GF the other night about how all the Turtles figures had all kinds of extraneous little bugs and stuff sculpted on them.

Vaporman-
Bandai Creation Godzilla stuff is at Kmart and Toys R Us these days. The wave with Desotroyah was the most recent one. Hedorah is the man.

Ghosted by Kid Nicky @ 12/12/2008 2:38 PM EST

Tresjolie: Amen. It’s still my favorite movie ever. But I’ve never found it on DVD. Very irritatingly, I had a close call last October when Circuit City put it on sale at a mere five bucks amongst a bunch of monster movies, but by the time I got to the store the bin was empty. >:(

KB going away is weird. The one I used to frequent was in the Green Acres mall, and if I remember correctly, went away a few years ago. I think it’s a CVS now. I’m not sure as I refuse to go to that mall.

The Roosevelt Field one was still there last time I checked, but I could never really find any good Transformers there, and the place was always a disaster. Sad to see another childhood staple go. Like someone else said, I long for the days that department stores had toy departments.

Didn’t realize Mondo Gecko was so rare. My youngest brother had him and who knows how many others from the TMNT line. That was his thing. I was a Transformers nut, and my middle brother was the GI Joe fan. We were some spoiled little bastards, let me tell you.

I have a confession, I’ve never had Eggnog, and have no desire to try it…

I know…I have no soul….

Darth Galvatron: Iv’e never had eggnog either. I asked my brother to describe it to me, and he said it was like drinking alcoholic pancake mix.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 12/12/2008 4:39 PM EST

Ahh egg nog. The one and only egg nog I’ll ever drink is by Guernsey Farms, which is a little farm here in MI. It is so wonderfully delicious, all the others just taste gross to me. I still remember when the KayBee toy store in our local mall changed to KB. I wasn’t happy about it, it just seemed weird… yet I also thought changing Kentucky Fried Chicken to KFC was weird too. They took KayBee out of one of the malls back in the early 90’s and out of the other probably just a few years ago. I was so disappointed. It always had a odd selection of great toys mixed in with toys that no one would buy that were marked down to like $1.50. The shelves were usually messed up, the lighting in the one store was dark mostly because the shelves went all the way to the ceiling and it always had a ton of other kids running around.

Ghosted by Alyssa @ 12/12/2008 4:46 PM EST

I’ve tried eggnog enough to know that I don’t really care for it. “Alcoholic Pancake Mix” seems like a good way to describe it.

Frankly, if I’m going to be drinking alcohol, I’d rather just have a glass of red wine.

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 12/12/2008 4:47 PM EST

Mars, I got mine on the street from a guy selling used DVDs for $5.00 each. Even though it came “pre scratched,” it is the best DVD in my DVD collection. I would try amazon, and used DVD sellers if you are looking for it.

Nicky – a character designer is the person who figures out how a character will look for animation or toys, or both. Such as Derrick Wyatt being the character designer for Transformers: Animated.

I’m sad – I won’t see the end of the Advent Calendar until the 31st. I’m leaving for the parents’ place on the 16th, and considering the row there was last time because she wanted free tech support without allowing me to actually DO the job, I’m not going to touch my mother’s computer. ‘Course, we will be going to my brother’s house…heh…

Yes, is Tigerboy some type of circus animal? Like the way they are putting HU to use, and his take on this. I do wonder what those circus animals are up to, are they angry that someone is living in their space? What happened to the original circus?

Ode to KayBee:

To me, KayBee is not a chain, it is one store- the Staten Island Mall Kay Bee… wedged somewhere between Friendly’s and V.I.M. on the 2nd level.

It was no Toys R Us… that’s where my major hunting and stalking took place- sorting through boxes of Ninja Turtles, Dick Tracy, G.I. Joe, etc., in search of elusive characters hinted at on cardboard backs (I never did find The Blank). But KayBee seemingly existed for it’s own specific purpose- to provide cheap B-line toys and knick-knacks for those days when you DIDN’T score a 100 on your spelling test, but still deserved a present.

Things like Food Fighters, G.U.T.S., Madballs, Spitballs, Army Ants, Spinjas, Trash Bag Bunch, and Toxic Crusaders… not to mention a countless number of generic battery operated dogs that bark and backflip. I don’t remember ever buying anything of true substance there- just things like Return of the Jedi Presto Magic and Gremlins Shrinky Dinks. Maybe some Transformer Lite Brite refills.

Either way, KayBee (and smaller stores like it) provided the spices and seasoning in a generation filled with Mega toy lines… without it, our nostalgic yearnings may have been limited to Masters of the Universe. Afterall, what would X-E be without the likes of A Bad Case of the Worms and Garbage Pail Kids Tacky Snappers?

Here’s to your legacy KayBee… one of the good ones.

Kid Nicky
Character designer… Well. You see…
Okay.

When Walt Disney Drew Mickey…
he didn’t just DRAW Mickey and it was MICKEY and that was it.
There is a long process that goes into creating a character, from how their eyes look to the clothes they wear- all that builds a fundamental idea of their personality by their appearance.

From Animation to Computer Graphics to toys and even Live actors, there is a Character Designer that makes that Character look the way it does and FOR A REASON. (in live action it’s a costume designer)

Ghosted by kittymao @ 12/12/2008 5:44 PM EST

I hate that the Rankin-Bass marathon is tomorrow and not Christmas Eve again! :(

Not to double post, but it seems like the only good RB ones on tomorrow are Santa Claus is Comin’ To Town, Little Drummer Boy, and I assume Year Without a Santa Claus coming on before “Miser Bros. Christmas.” I’ll be missing that, but that’s what my DVR is for!

Kittymao-
OK,I knew what a character designer was in the sense of animated shows, but I figured that was such a rare occupation that you must have meant something different.
What shows did you work on?
Moony-
Apparently “Derrick Wyatt” is who I have to send angry letters to-I HATE their chins! Their little sidekick girl looks like a goddamn troll monster or something, not a little kid.

Ninja Turtle fans-
Why did every figure have one foot half raised like that?
I understand it was supposed to be some sort of “battle ready stance” but I think my Turtle would look a little more battle ready if he wasn’t propping himself up with his sword. Seriously, you couldn’t make one of them stand up without peforming some kind of arcane ritual.

kid nicky:

I have a B.A. In Illustration and Animation with a Focus in Character Design, but have yet to find a job in the industry.
Maybe if I lived in LA.
In the meantime I am a graphic designer for an online home decor company, and spend a lot of time working on my portfolio.

I am on Elfwood- http://www.elfwood.com/art/d/o/doyle/doyle.html

I haven’t updated in some time, but that’s my work.

Nicky, he does have a blog you could flame him on, with links to it from the TFW main page when he posts new designs. Personally, I like the show and disagree with everything you said, but respect that you don’t.

*goes to look at kittymao’s Elfwood portfolio*

I recently tried World of Warcraft to see if i’d like it. I do. It’s really fun talkin to other players and gettin stronger. I chose to be a priest.

Hey everyone, I’m back from Walt Disney World. Space Mountain didn’t kill me, though it felt like Thunder
Mountain tried to murder me. Anyway, I loved the
TMNT toys when I was a kid. The new ones aren’t as
good as the old ones. While I was in Florida, I
found a Hess Truck. I’m one of the few in Texas that
has one.

That was some pretty cool art. Instead of TV,you should go for one of those startup free-to-play MMOs that are always popping up,you know with generic names like: MagicCraft-The LevelUppening. It’s probably too late to get into the “AmeriManga” craze, since I think the manga bubble’s allready burst pretty bad,but who knows.
