Got my Christmas tree. Got candy canes, too.

For Christmas, I am requesting the ability to FREEZE TIME.

We got our tree. We've been using this one specific tree lot for the past few years, not so much because the trees are better or cheaper, but because this place really puts on a show. The lot looks just like the one from A Christmas Story, right down to the colored lights stranded around barbed wire.

It's a pretty perfect place. Since it's actually a mom & pop home and garden center that alternates themes with the passing seasons, there's more to it than just a few rows of trees. For one, there's a speaker system circling the lot, so as you're waddling through the tree aisles, you're serenaded by Wham and Paul McCartney. For two, they sell a lot more than just Christmas trees. Tons of wreaths, light-up lawn inflatables, reindeer-shaped wooden mailboxes and so forth...the kind of stuff you wouldn't buy, but love looking at.

For three, they gave out free cups of apple cider.

It was surreal. Between the music blaring and the warmly dressed cashier inviting us to have some apple cider, I had the strangest sense that I'd become trapped in a low-budget made-for-television Christmas movie. Clearly our salesperson/cider supplier was about to lull us into false faith with promises of big tree discounts, before pitching some kind of harebrained investment scheme where we pay 500 bucks to back her brother-in-law's "oil substitute," and ultimately discover the true meaning of Christmas by way of being broke. Anyway, the cider was excellent.

That's our tree. Our tree isn't very photogenic, but I promise, it's a handsome tree. I'm not sure if it's $48 worth of handsome, but that's what we paid. Currently, the $48 Christmas tree is laying sideways on our living room floor, still netted. This situation will be remedied soon, but even in this sad state, the tree still managed to overtake the toxic air of our apartment with the sweet scent of Christmas pine. And not that bullshit pine-in-a-can stuff, either. The real kind. The kind that makes you inhale more deeply than you ever thought you could, seemingly by reflex.

I'm not sure if we'll even have time to decorate the tree tomorrow, but at least it's here. There is no sight finer than a tree covered in Christmas crap, but even naked, it's prettier than yo momma.

I'm a candy cane traditionalist, but it's hard to resist some of the brand name candy-brand candy canes that have arrived in recent years. (Brand name candy-brand candy canes? I may want to edit that description. If I don't, it means I haven't proofread this before publishing. In which case...shit.)

There are candy canes based on everything from Sprees to Starburst, but I can't say that I'm a huge fan of how they look on trees. These "specialty" canes often come in nontraditional candy cane colors, like, for example, ORANGE. I can't wrap my head around orange candy canes and purple candy canes and other such atrocities, because I am a fallen human being and this is what life has come to for me. Still, even from a purely artistic perspective, white and red stripes will always contrast better against forest green than fucking orange and purple.

I forgot where I was going with this. Thank God for photos. Bubblicious Candy Canes might not be new, but I've certainly never seen them before. Though they seem pretty typical at first, a closer inspection reveals the hidden surprise that makes them worth all these many paragraphs: They are candy canes with gum inside!

It's true! As you suck the gum-flavored candy cane down to nothingness, an inner cylinder (well, a cylinder with a big curve at the end) made of sweet, chewy Bubblicious bubble gum is revealed! It's good gum, too. The canes' moistness and sugar seems to seep into the gum, transforming it from normal Bubblicious into that weird gum paste stuff that Bazooka used to sell in tubes. If you know what I'm talking about, you realize why this is special.

I was going to write more, but...bed. Merry Christmas!

Click my name to see my tree. I don’t know how people have themed trees where everything is for example gold balls with gold ribbons and stuff like that. It just looks so impersonal. I love how mine looks (though it may look tacky) where I have all these ornaments my kids have made through the years to one where it says “Our first Christmas 1998″ and even one a few that my weed dealer gave us when we were first starting off. She was a real sweet person.

I’m a heretic in that I don’t care for candy canes in any flavor. They look cool on the tree but not in my mouth.

I haven’t had a real Christmas tree for like ten years now. I think we’ll wait to get one until we have kids, just so they can experience it once.

That pre-chewed Bazooka was the shit.
Am I the only person who had no idea what the Librarian was until part 3 came out? It’s like all of a sudden there’s nonstop commercials “don’t miss the third and FINAL Librarian” and I’m like “WTF is Librarian?”
Then it showed Noah Wylie and I said no thank you.

your tree looks cute…i also prefer the anything and everything goes style. it’s more homey and real. no offense to anyone, but i especially dislike trees with a white/blue/purple theme. red and green and rainbow all the way.

i haven’t put up my tree in several years (puppy…not worth it), and the best part about that is not having to put it all away.

I agree with Reni – I love those rainbow cherry candy canes, but we couldn’t find any at WalMart yesterday :( Peppermint are good too and look the bomb on the tree.

My roomies and I put up our college-apartment-fake-tree yesterday (we still get to go home to our families’ trees when finals are over) and I bought this big plastic multicolored light-up star for the top. I couldn’t stop staring at it yesterday! Christmas for me is all about the colors, the lights, and any combination thereof.

Before we got a real tree topper, we used our tissue ghost from Halloween. He represented the Holy Ghost.

We’ve been using the same artificial tree since probably before I was born and I’m just fine with it. We did a theme tree one year where it was just superhero-related. We got alot of those Hallmark character ornaments and just put them on the tree along with tying on some of my action figures to it. It was cool.

I actually haven’t had a candy cane yet this year (although I’m kinda in the fruit-flavored camp), but I have been gulping every Christmas-related Hershey kiss I can get my hands on.

I’m also excited for the third Librarian film, as the first two were really fun.

Candy canes with bubble gum in the center? Brilliant! I want to find these. I remember a year or two ago, I found some mint chocolate candy canes. Can’t remember what brand they were, but they were pretty horrible. But dammit, they looked neat.

When I was a kid, my family always bought our tree from one of those mom & pop places too, with wreaths and other decorations for sale too. We never got free cider, but they always had free mini candy canes, which is not much but as a child it seems amazing. In recent years, after all the children left home and moved away but still came home for Christmas, my parents stopped buying a tree and just put lights on a giant, six foot tall houseplant they already had. I think they did it the first time just to be funny, but now that’s become our tradition instead. As an adult, I still love Christmas, but it’s harder to get into the spirit, so…I put lights and tinsel on a houseplant of mine this year. Just carrying on the tradition, I guess.

Wow that is so weird. Yesterday I was reminiscing with my mom about past childhood Christmases and I thought of these giant gum candy canes that we couldn’t remember the names of. This isn’t the same thing, but it looks like a good substitute.

Cisco — I believe you’re referring to the “Bubble Cane,” which I reviewed in this article. :)

Invader Norbert – I was just thinking of that place the other day, weird! I drove passed the CVS and remembered that this was where my mother would drag me for what seemed like hours so that she could get plants and seeds. (She used to be big on gardening.) I don’t quite remember it around Christmastime though.
I have a ridiculous amount of (fake) Christmas trees in my house thanks to my sister recently moving in. And I have my own in my room. :)

Also, Matt, the advent calendar this year is shaping up to be the best. I’ve laughed out loud at least twice reading each entry. Thanks for that!

What was the movie? Nukie?

Chestnuts roasted by Kid Nicky @ 12/07/2008 1:59 PM

hey Matt, what kind of camera do you use for the advent calendar? be VERY specific, please.

Chestnuts roasted by jason @ 12/07/2008 1:59 PM

yeah….not doing much right now…just watching the shibu inu puppies U stream video. 3 of em are going to their FOrever Home today. Meaning their new owners. So sad….but U stream has actually offered video cameras and u stream accounts to the new owners so people can still keep track of the pups progress.

I agree on candy canes- red and white for me. I grew up with rainbow too, so I count rainbow in there as well.

I do remember the gum in a tube. You used to always be able to find it at KB Toys for some reason. I loved it. There was always a good 30 seconds of chewing/swishing hoping it would solidify to a chewable state.

Oh, don’t know if you’ve seen yet or if I just never noticed it before but the Pomegranate 7-up is back and now…in diet! I looked for diet everywhere last year and nothing could be found. Its in my fridge as I type.

Just wanted to let you guys know that Garfield’s Christmas is gonna be on ABC Family Tuesday at 7pm!!

They’ve got the “premiere” of Mickey’s Christmas Carol too.. Though it originally “premiered” in 1983. (There was a “best holiday moments” on ABC or NBC the other day that cited it as 1993. I was like “Then what the hell did I watch with my cousin when I was 5 in 1988? Was I psychic?”)

Anyway, now ABCFamily’s finally increasing the dosage of Christmas cartoons. As much as I love Harry Potter, it doesn’t quite say Christmas to me.

I’VE HAD CHRISTMAS CRUNCH EVERY MORNING! NOW I’M REALLY IN THE CHRISTMAS SPIRIT!

Chestnuts roasted by Reesie @ 12/07/2008 3:37 PM

I hope thats not hot cider. Hot cider is wrong! Just…plain….wrong! Anywaqy, I’m enjoying the christmas stuff so far this year. The XM advent calendar has wormed its way in as one of my christmas traditions.

It is a beautiful tree Matt!

Ooh, Gremlins is starting on AMC right now. That truly puts me in the Christmas spirit for some odd reason.

Chestnuts roasted by Jack @ 12/07/2008 4:00 PM

The spirit has returned to the 13 household. Ultraman – the key for me was wrapping the presents! There is no way to feel out of the mood while I’m wrapping up the fun stuff I got for people. I’ll have to remember this trick for next year!
