Yuletide Vroom.

It's difficult to explain the magic of Christmas in less than 80,000 words. There are simply too many facets. Still, I think I've got a handle on how Christmastime never seems to lose its sinister powers. Fate may deal you a bad hand one December, and some years may be better than others, but when it comes to Christmas, there are awesome things that nobody can ever take away from you.

Driving randomly around the neighborhood to check out everyone's holiday digs while blasting Christmas music from a dusty car radio is a good example. I've had Christmas seasons that were better than others, but these awesome drives can never be stolen from me. Well, I guess maybe if I got into some kind of freak accident and had to get my legs amputated, they could, but even then, I'd just ride shotgun while somebody else drove.

One of the advantages of living in a very Catholic town is the abundance of Christmas decorations. They're everywhere, and they're in serious, concentrated volume. There are plenty of families who stick with a few simple strands of lights lining their windows, but there are just as many houses that can probably be seen from outer space with the naked eye.

It's these mega-decorated houses that I always hunt for on my random Christmas drives, but to be honest, I get even better vibes from the simpler houses. They seem less like spectacles and more like the genuine artifact, and I always find myself wondering how the people inside celebrate during the holiday season.

Do they watch old home movies in their pajamas? Do they drink eggnog by the tree at night, with scratchy old records playing in the background? Do they watch Ron Howard's The Grinch and wonder why the Grinch's love interest is the only Who in Whoville who doesn't have a fucked up Who nose?

Does the family celebrate Christmas at their house, or do they pack up and head off to some distant relative's abode? Do they have a dog? Does the dog get to stay indoors at night more often during Christmastime? Do they swap Febreze for one of those overpowering cinnamon air fresheners for one month only? All of this fascinates me.

The music plays into my mood during these drives. How can I put this? You know how most of us have a couple of movies on DVD that we never put on, yet we watch them every time they turn up on regular television? There's some kind of malformed camaraderie aspect. It's the same with Christmas music on the radio. I probably don't need to hear Brenda Lee rock around the Christmas tree for the millionth time, but if there's a chance that someone somewhere else will be doing it at the exact same time in the exact same way, I'll crank up the volume. I'll also roll up the windows to make sure that no passing cars hear what I'm listening to, but that's beside the point.

I can and will do these drives a dozen times more between now and Christmas. I'll never get tired of it. Sometimes, I'll invent an errand just so I have an excuse for more car-drive-lights-music.

Christmas ruled my life when I was a child, but contrary to how this site is presented in December, it certainly doesn't now. Real life interferes. That's natural, but little things like this help keep the whole concept of month-long joy alive. No matter how busy we get, there will always be time to drive around the neighborhood at night, staring at lights and wondering why doing that feels so good.

PS: The Advent Calendar has been updated for December 3rd. It features a clown doing terrible things.

Reesie We had a literature professor in college who believed that all stories of conflict connect with a universal mind, and can be compared to the great classics. And what attracts us to these stories is some sort of Carl Jung/archytype thingy (according to this professor) So for that class, I brought up Rudolph. Despite all the laughter and threats to keep me out of their reindeer games, everyone in the class kind of agreed with me.

In a strange twist, our daughter, named Clarice, well, we call her Reesie.

What a mystical, coincidental, connection of Christmas! :-)

I have a similar hangup to hobbitsubculture in that I have a hard time getting into the LED lights because the colors just seem a little off to me. I can’t figure out what it is…maybe it’s an over-intensity of blue (though I don’t typically have a problem with blue Christmas lights), maybe they’re just too dark, but they’re not quite Christmasy enough for me. My husband wants to switch, and I’m trying to put him off, at least until I can come up with a better reason than “I don’t like the colors as well”.

One year (the year we got engaged actually), my husband took me out to show me a house he always passed on his commute. It was this tiny little shack, but they had run Christmas lights vertically all along the front to create a sort of curtain of lights. It was one of the coolest things I’d ever seen. I’m not sure how they got in and out of their house, or if maybe the residents were shut-ins whose house was decorated by volunteers. It really was amazing. We went back the next year, but there were no lights up at all. We were pretty sad.

Alexander- a Polish Christmas Eve dinner sounds sooooo delicious. I dated a Polish guy once, who came over in the summers to work in a resort in Maine, and he made me pierogis from scratch because I had never had any. They were like mind blowing..lol. And how mega-cute that you named your daughter Clarice! That is awesome!

Lori

I know exactly what you mean about the LED lights…I can’t get into them either. They just look blue! I hope that “real” Christmas lights won’t go away…

I’m actually the same way with those energy saving regular light bulbs. I don’t like the color and warmth of the light they put out…

I love driving around looking at all the lights. I think we did that once or twice when I was little. I always used to fall asleep in the car; even if it was a 5 minute drive, so my parents felt that it wasn’t worth all the driving. We have a lightfest every year where the county puts up lights and animated stuff along this long road. Even though it’s been going on for over 10 years, I’ve never been. Either I forget about it, or I’m too busy or no one wants to go. Now it seems that not as many people decorate now as they used to. I’m not sure why, maybe it has something to do with the electricity bills, whatever it is, it’s just sad. Even my dad used to cover the house and bushes in lights. Now it’s only lights on the along the roof of the house and one of those light up deer and sled things on the front lawn, the thing doesn’t even move! I guess they figure since I don’t live there they don’t need to decorate as much any more, that and my dad says he’s getting to old to do all that work of putting everything up.

This post is The New Yorker quality. Beautifully written, straight to the soul and beyond inspiring. I was a little worried that this year’s Christmas spirit would be lost again but somehow, you sir, managed to hit the one soft spot in the heart that reminds us all what Christmas is. Ya, it may never be as exciting as 1987 with high hopes of Megatron and Lazer Tag but as life becomes more complex I think we all strive for something simple. So, thank you Matt. I can’t imagine Christmas without X-Entertainment.

Matt:

Are there any of those super-duper drive through christmas parks with millions of lights close to where you live?

Lucky Lighter, or anyone else: What’s a good part of Philly to drive around to look at lights? Every year my friends and I drive around but never really seem to be able to find many houses decorated. Do you guys have any spots around Philly or the burbs? Thanks!

You’d probably enjoy The Winter Festival of Lights in Niagara Falls then. Took the kids there last year one night to see the fireworks and then drive through this hidden park near the falls that has lots of great light displays! The park that is on the edge of the falls also had some great disney light displays. http://www.wfol.com/
Glad you brought up the topic because it reminded me to schedule a night to make a thermos of hot chocolate and go there again this year.

Chestnuts roasted by TheToyFairy @ 12/04/2008 2:25 PM

I do the same thing! Even roll up the windows. And I look around suspiciously to see if anyone can still hear me and is laughing at me.

106.7 is ok for Christmas music, but 101.1 is where it’s at! Way better songs.

Anyway, you have no idea how happy I am that it’s advent calendar time.

Chestnuts roasted by kate @ 12/04/2008 2:31 PM

y2jb78 Roxborough, Mayfair, Chestnut Hill, and most of South Philly are lit up nice each year. The northeast has lawnspace where you can see some good inflatables,South Philly has some streets with “old school” lights running from one house to the house across the street from it for entire blocks! Roxborough is good for windows and some lawns done up, and Chestnut Hill is more “fancy” type stuff.

Chestnuts roasted by Lucky Lighter @ 12/04/2008 2:42 PM

Ok so I’m just getting caught up on the calendar and I’m confused. Did I miss something between last christmas and this year that fills in the gaps?

It’s still a mystery, but basically Hare and Claire escaped hell and took out the house with Giant Coconut Crabs.

Ah, the Christmas lights drive … sigh …

Funny, irreverent, yet poignant story all at the same time, I have to give it two reindeer licks up.

Chestnuts roasted by Oz @ 12/04/2008 3:53 PM

Oh, and speaking of Reindeer Licks … on one level I don’t even look twice at the amazing array of plastic-coated candy devices out there today, but on another level, when the mechanical engineering major (never finished, bummer) in me sees these things sometimes, I realize:
There are several injection-molded plastic parts needed to create every single one of those pops.
Each injection-molded piece had to be first created as a mold, probably costing in the neighborhood of $50,000 just for the initial tooling of, say, the nose assembly.
It’s not just one mold, it’s several, at $50,000 a pop, pardon the pun.
And somebody, or team of somebodies, had to first create the design for the molds and tooling on paper (or CAD, more likely), then get that to the machinists team, who then created a prototype mold (for around $100,000) that they then used to create the production molds.
So an amazing amount of money and billable hours went into creating a disgusting lollypop, aimed at I can’t even imagine the target audience. Maybe zoophiles.

Oh, well, only in America, as purchased from China.

Alexander:
“Or how Rudolph is like the Tale of Brave Ulysees”

Tiny purple fishes ran laughing through his fingers?
Or am I suffering from a Cream deficit?

Chestnuts roasted by kingklash @ 12/04/2008 4:36 PM

Kingklash I knew that song was lurking in my head! But in relation to the classic Greek legend, wouldn’t you say that The Bumble plays the role of The Cyclops Ulysses had to conquer?

Don’t just think Cream, think Cream-ey, Egg Nog, Edy’s Ice Cream!

Chestnuts roasted by Alexander @ 12/04/2008 4:59 PM

I like driving through the neighborhoods with the huge, expensive houses. They always have pretty badass decorations in their yards.

This year is a little odd for me. I’m feeling the Christmas spirit, but not as strongly as I’d like, I guess. I also can’t really afford to buy anybody anything this year, which always hurts my Christmas spirit a lot. I’m considering buying stuff anyway and worrying about the credit card debt later.

Alright seein’ as how Rudolph started out as a Monkey Ward’s promotional children’s book, seems I remember once posting a link to an online article about how a certain fast food company’s mascots could be compared to archetypes of storytelling. The Leader, The Fool, The Rouge, that sort of thing. If I can hunt it up again, I’ll repost the link.

There are a couple of places around here with really nice light displays, but not many. And I refuse to hide my Christmas music, I want people to hear it…the only way I roll my windows up is if it’s just too cold! My preferred listening is Teddy Ray’s F’d Up Christmas:
1. The Chanukah Song – Adam Sandler
2. The Chanukah Song, Pt. 2 – Adam Sandler
3. Santa Claus is Comin’ to Town – Bruce Springsteen
4. Manger 6 – Bob Rivers
5. The Chimney Song – Bob Rivers
6. Merry Christmas, Baby – Bruce Springsteen
7. Clark Griswold going berzerk in Christmas Vacation
8. Run, Run, Rudolph – Chuck Berry
9. Santa and His Old Lady – Cheech and Chong
10. Happy Xmas (War is Over) – John Lennon
11. Please Come Home for Christmas – Jon Bon Jovi
12. Feliz Navidad – Jose Feliciano
13. Frosty the Snowman – Leon Redbone and Dr. John
14. Grandma Got Run Over By a Reindeer – some punk band
15. Merry Christmas From the Family – Robert Earl Keen
16. Christmas in Hollis – Run DMC
17. Hark the Herald Angels Sing/Carol of the Bells – SHeDAISY and tobyMac
18. Rudolph the Red-Nosed Reindeer – The Smithereens (I think)
19. Santa Doesn’t Cop Out on Dope – Sonic Youth (Why did I put this song on here? I HATE this song!)
20. Steve Martin’s classic Christmas Wishes skit from SNL
21. Christmas (Baby Please Come Home) – U2
22. Have Yourself a Merry Little Christmas – Local H
23. White Christmas – some ska band

Chestnuts roasted by Lucky Lighter @ 12/04/2008 6:47 PM

I just found some M&M’s and Coca Cola polar bears ornaments to hang on the trees! Oh happy joy! =D But there’s STILL so much to do. I think I’ll take a break and look at the neighborhood lights while I go for a stroll.=)

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 12/04/2008 6:48 PM

Sorry to double post, but the wife and I last night were saying that Rudolph obviously represented an African American, mistreated because he looked different and Hermes represented a homosexual, mistreated just because he liked different things than everyone else. It’s all a metaphor for acceptance.

We still don’t know what they got in the Playmobil box yesterday! I wonder what nefarious thing it is!?
