11/26/2008: A bunch of things, including artichokes.

Holy bird, Thanksgiving is tomorrow.  Insane.  Quickest year ever.  We’ve been enlisted to contribute both stuffed mushrooms and baby artichokes to the family spread, which is a tall order for someone who would much rather do nothing at all.

The bad news: No new Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade review this year.  Sorry…time just wasn’t on my side, and really, the parades I have left in my archive of dusty cassettes are nowhere near as interesting as the ones I’ve already covered.  The bright side is, if you’ve never read those, I’ve got about six thousand pages worth of Shamu balloons, He-Man floats and old Christmas commercials for you to spend the next two days pilfering through:

The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Review: 1984
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Review: 1985 & 1986!
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Review: 1987!
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Review: 1989!
The Macy’s Thanksgiving Day Parade Review: 1991!

I’ll see if I can round up some new ancient parades for next year.  As penance, I’ve already begun working on a fairly gigantic “real” article that I hope to have published sometime between now and the year 8000.

Finding the aforementioned baby artichokes was no easy task.  The mission took me from one side of town to the other, spanning no less than four supermarkets and, on a real hope shot, a corner deli.  I didn’t mind the endless search, as it seemed like each supermarket carried an entirely different line of holiday-themed goods.  Certainly, none of the places I’d usually buy baby artichokes at had one pound Sugar Daddy pops in stock.

Read again: ONE POUND Sugar Daddy pops.  Honestly, they feel even heavier.  And they’re huge.  Sold as edible stocking stuffers with random holly graphics on the wrappers, these may be the weirdest “Christmas edition” foodstuffs I’ve ever encountered.  You needn’t be a fan of Sugar Daddies (I’ve never eaten one in my entire life) to appreciate a candy that feels like a Honey, I Blah Blah Blah prop.  I feel dwarfed and empowered, and perhaps a little unworthy.

The paddle-shaped wad of milk caramel is a serious weapon.  It’s denser than commercial lumber, and I’m pretty sure that if I whacked you across the head with it, you’d die.  A one pound Sugar Daddy is an impressive sight, but make no mistake, no good can come of this candy.  Nevermind the ravages done to one’s intestinal tract upon eating the equivalent of 9.5 regular-sized Sugar Daddies; I speak more to the nearly-irresistible temptation to misuse this thing.  From unlikely instruments of murder to the focal point of some bizarre manner of foreplay, one pound Sugar Daddies are the most innocuous of all evil things.

Despite their natural fit for criminal activity, these giant-sized Sugar Daddies would admittedly look great under the tree or in a stocking.  If nothing else, no gift-getter, young or old, would ever predict such a gift.

Ehhh.  This is bittersweet.  I’m kind of over Star Wars-themed Christmas decorations, because I feel like there’s only so many times you can see Darth Vader in a Santa cap before the visual loses its punch.  At the same time, these are probably the best Star Wars-themed Christmas decorations I’ve ever purchased.

Made by Kurt’s Adler, it’s a collection of six large statues ranging from the above-pictured Yoda to R2-D2 to Boba Fett and beyond.  The packaging says that they’re “hand-crafted fabriche,” and I’m left wondering what the fuck “fabriche” is.  Must be Italian.  I guess I could look it up, but then “fabriche” would lose all of its awesome mysteriousness and become just another one of those words I avoid typing because I never learned how to make that little accent symbol appear above the letter “e.”  Let’s pretend that “fabriche” is street slang for “neat shit.”

I picked up two of the statues, which range from 15 to 25 bucks.  First up is Yoda Claus, who is desperately trying to look casual about his sudden casting as Christmas’s marquee star.  More impressive is the Darth Vader statue, where the Sith lord temporarily lets go of his anger to build the Death Star out of snow.  Cute, but I already got the snowglobe-version of this joke last year.  Surely they could’ve portrayed Vader in the midst of some other, never-before-seen Christmas activity.  Like you wouldn’t pay 25 bucks for a statue showing Darth Vader scraping morning ice from the front window of his uniquely-winged TIE Fighter.

See a larger photo of Yoda Claus and Darth Vader here.  See a small photo of a happy orange here.

And oh!  Ho ho!  Those stupid Fizz ‘n Find toys have managed to eke out their own Christmas edition.  The toys are exactly the same as the ones I reviewed for Halloween, save for the fact that the hidden monster figures have been replaced with hidden Christmassy tree ornaments.

You can refer back to the Halloween review to see how Fizz ‘n Find toys work, but the short version is this: After unwrapping the toy, you’re left with a rough, white hockey puck, which dissolves in warm water to reveal a prize inside.  Nobody could claim that this isn’t an interesting concept.

After repurposing a cereal bowl as a dunk tank and letting my Fizz ‘n Find brick melt away, I was left with a cheerful Santa Claus figurine, complete with looped string for easy tree branch hanging.  I can’t say that I was too amazed with it all, but then, I am sixty-seven years old.

PS: If you were having trouble running X-E’s Christmas Jukebox, I made some tweaks and believe that it’s now completely operational.  If it isn’t, then you’ll just have to be satisfied with the five radio stations currently playing nothing but Christmas music from now until New Year’s.

Gah.  I don’t want to make baby artichokes.  I hate babies.

the bronx is awash in baby artichokes.

You’re in the wrong borough, pal.

I don’t like being first.  It makes me look a little too eager.  I take back what I said about the artichokes.  There are no artichokes here.  Only oreo balls and sexy gravy.

Posted by Rev. Back It On Up 13 @ 11/26/2008 5:33 PM EST

I love being 3rd.

Posted by Faith @ 11/26/2008 5:47 PM EST

I would like to see the Boba Fett one.

Posted by LoneStar76 @ 11/26/2008 5:49 PM EST

is the jukebox next to the advent calander suppose to work or only the on on the sidebar?

Posted by Rob @ 11/26/2008 5:53 PM EST

You must be the youngest 67-year-old ever. ;-)

Posted by palmerholic @ 11/26/2008 5:55 PM EST

Seriously, I want one of thos giant sugar daddy’s. Matt where did you find such an amazing item? Has anyone else seen these? Do tell!

Posted by Morfnblorsh @ 11/26/2008 5:57 PM EST

I want a sugar daddy.

Posted by Amy @ 11/26/2008 6:00 PM EST

The picture shows you paying off your sugar daddy with a quarter. Now I’m left wondering what the going rate is…
Fabriche!

Posted by Faith @ 11/26/2008 6:03 PM EST

is that quarter having anything to do with Box 23

Oh!!! I made the oreo balls.  I sneaked one and MAN are they AWESOME!  Rich too! I’d say…a sleeve and a half oreos, 12 oz creamcheese, and to make the chocolate took about a normal size bag of semi sweet morsels, and half stick of shortening.  It yields about 3 dozen balls.

Posted by mandy _Reeves @ 11/26/2008 6:25 PM EST

Who the hell is going to make Oreo balls when you can buy a giant box of Oreo Cakesters (36 in total) for $5 at Big Lots?

Posted by PhelpsPhan @ 11/26/2008 6:26 PM EST

I need to go grab one of those Sugar Daddies and put it next to my 15lb. (Sarcasm) Chocolate Tombstone I’ve yet to try and eat from Halloween.

I’m assuming thats the new theme this year? Giant candy? I seem to recall being able to buy a giant Hershy Kiss a few years ago, but it just seems like they’ve been stepping up the production on “GIANT” candy lately.

Matt, to give you a heads up, My friend tells me that the Toys ‘R’ Us in Times Square is selling giant 6ft Pixie Stixs that apparently have the diameter of a quarter. Thats a CRAPLOAD of sugary sweetness there. Also, they have a “Snow” flavor….whatever the hell that is.

Posted by Jester @ 11/26/2008 6:31 PM EST

The packaging says that they’re “hand-crafted fabriche,” and I’m left wondering what the fuck “fabriche” is.  Must be Italian.

Much like “fragile.” Are those Star Wars items tree ornaments or just statuettes? I would buy Darth if I could hang him from my tree (though I’d prefer he weren’t wearing a Santa hat… that’s overkill).

Posted by Cheetara @ 11/26/2008 6:38 PM EST

I’m pretty sure that if I whacked you across the head with it, you’d die.  I laughed heartily.

Jester, I think it’s pretty obvious that the snow flavor pixie sticks are pure, uncut cocaine.

Teddy Ray: DAMN, you beat me to it.

Amy: I could use a sugar daddy as well.

Posted by Cheetara @ 11/26/2008 6:46 PM EST

I don’t think I have ever eaten a sugar daddy before, now I must try one.
Found out today I get a 4 day weekend.  First Black Friday I have not worked since I was an adult, and I am flat broke.  Figures.  I might go chop down a tree however :)

Posted by kb @ 11/26/2008 6:52 PM EST

3rd is good too. ;)

Posted by Faith @ 11/26/2008 7:06 PM EST

I am still incredibly jealous of your snow globe.  I looked and looked for one after I saw it last year…maybe this ornament will suffice.

I wish Canada had Thanksgiving in November also.  Our Thanksgiving was 47 days ago!! It’s BEFORE Halloween! I don’t like it…

Posted by Muppet Baby @ 11/26/2008 7:11 PM EST

Giant sugar daddys and growin Christmas ornaments? Sounds awesome! Happy Thanksgiving  ya’ll !!! =D  Also, hang in there Matt. You’ll make it through this. =)

Posted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/26/2008 7:13 PM EST

I still haven’t even fizzed up my Halloween Fizz n’ Finds yet. I got three of them, just sitting in the kitchen, waiting on fizz.

I want to see baby artichoke Fizz n’ Finds. Made with real baby fizz.

Posted by DJ D @ 11/26/2008 7:29 PM EST

Oh, Matt–Are our posts going to be “basted by” or “chestnut roasted by” again this year? We should come up with something.

Posted by DJ D @ 11/26/2008 7:36 PM EST

Happy Thanksgiving everyone!  I’m looking forward to the parade, even though I don’t really watch it closely.  It wouldn’t feel right without it being on in the background.

Posted by Jeff Mack @ 11/26/2008 7:39 PM EST

I’ve seen the giant sugar daddy at 5 Below, but I passed on it, never been a big fan of them…now if it was a giant Choco-baby, then I’d be all over that…even though I feel like I’m the only one who remembers Choco-babies.

Posted by Sharkagator @ 11/26/2008 7:45 PM EST

My Oreo mix is in the fridge. I just have to wait to put my oldest to bed then I’m going to ball them and dip them in chocolate!!! Then I’m making mashed potatoes.

I really need to have a Star Wars Christmas decoration, I really do.

Posted by IHAQ @ 11/26/2008 7:50 PM EST

Matt- You HAVE improved the Jukebox! Waiterbot looks right at home there, if a little ornery…

Posted by PlantMonster @ 11/26/2008 7:55 PM EST

does anybody else have the 23rd day of advent calendar available to click on, and when they click on it does it go to some website called dinosaurdracula, and when theyre at the aforementioned website does an alien head appear that says i see you?

Posted by Ryder @ 11/26/2008 7:55 PM EST

DJ D: I was holding off on “Chestnuts Roasted” because it seemed too early when I switched the design…but I think the time is right now. :)

Posted by Matt @ 11/26/2008 8:02 PM EST

I wouldn’t try eating that Sugar Daddy, unless you want to have all of your teeth pulled out by it and you want dentures. Regular-sized SD’s are already notoriously hard on them, I’d hate to see what that sucker would do.

I remember being at Sam’s Club one time and they were selling a 5-pound Hershey bar. Yikes.

Never eaten an artichoke before.

Couldn’t Vader have at least built a Frosty? Or maybe Jack Frost, the killer snowman? Or wrestling the Abominable Snowman. Or choking Rudolph? ;)

Posted by JLAJRC @ 11/26/2008 8:20 PM EST

Ohh, Ryder.. such begins the magic of box 23… scroll down a couple of entries and you will see.

As for the massive Sugar Daddie.
I just about fainted.
I can’t explain it- I hate caramel… but love sugar daddies. And sugar babies.

Sugar baby -baby artichokes covered in baby fizz.

wow.
was that too far?
I can never tell.

Posted by kittymao @ 11/26/2008 8:23 PM EST

Well, all the food is in the process of be prepared for the big T-Day tomorrow. Now, I’m just gonna sit back and relax with my fellow X-Ers.

Posted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/26/2008 8:27 PM EST

Thank God I found the baby artichokes.  They’re so much easier to prep than adult artichokes.  Will still be cooking until 10 PM, but at least with a nice, easy pace full of cigarettes and sugared carrion.

Posted by Matt @ 11/26/2008 8:31 PM EST

I came back wondering when the Sugar Daddy jokes would start rolling in. :)
The best incarnation of Sugar Daddies are those Carmel Apple lollipops.

Posted by palmerholic @ 11/26/2008 8:32 PM EST

Haha geez, a regular Sugar Daddy takes me over an hour to eat. That giant one is intimidating.

Posted by Johee @ 11/26/2008 8:35 PM EST

i am about to go prep the turkey for tomorrow, and try to get term papers done. the term paper if for “american science fiction” class, so i get to write about alien colonization.

My balls are nice and cold.  My stuffed mushrooms are waiting for tomorrow to be baked.  My ziti also hovers in limbo.  My potatoes await transformation to croquette form.  Thanksgiving is underway.

After dinner tomorrow, I will put up my tree.  This shit is on.

Posted by mandy_Reeves @ 11/26/2008 9:03 PM EST

Palmerholic, they may still have some of those Caramel Apple Pops at work somewhere. I know they were around forever after Halloween.

I’ve never seen that massive Sugar Daddy, though. I really need to try to get to a mall, or at least Target. I haven’t even been in Wal Mart for a while.

Good luck with those artichokes, Matt. I don’t mess with the vegetables. I let my mother do that. I bring the bread for breakfast. I just hope no one minds that the pumpkin bread wound up flatter than pita.

Hey Matt,

Sorry to hear about the Tgiving parade thing, but I think you’d have to mine 1982 and earlier to get gold. Later ones were the suck.

Also, not to beat a dead horse, but never quite got the Ghoul-Aid or the other thingy yet. If you want me to shut up about it, I will.

Now back to your normal X-entertainment.

Mmm… artichoke. I found out the hard way this year that while fresh artichoke is awesome, canned artichoke is nasty crap.

Oh and thanks for the nice comment the other day, Matt. I actually just rounded off a 10 week session at Weight Watchers with a 23.4lb loss, bringing me to 85lbs lost over the past 2 years.

Posted by Mystie @ 11/26/2008 10:12 PM EST

mandy _Reeves, the quarter is in that picture for scale.  Reminds me of the time Matt posted a picture of something and added a little statuette of something else for scale, but I don’t think anyone had any idea how big the statuette was except for Matt.  It was pretty funny.

Also, Matt, “Nevermind the ravages done to one’s intestinal track…” I think you mean tract?

Okay, I think I’m through embarrassing you for now.

Happy Thanksgiving everyone.  Turkey Day is great and all, but what I really want to know is…does anybody have any Black Friday plans?

A few of my friends were gonna join the line at the Uptown Circuit City at around 10pm tomorrow night.  I believe the store opens at 5am.  I haven’t decided if I’m going to join them yet.  The store doesn’t have anything I really NEED (save a few cheap blu-rays), but I would be in it for the experience of it all.  The more I think about it, it is probably a dumb idea.

My last name has one of those accents.  Here, let me help you:  Fabriché.  And don’t worry, I couldn’t find a translation in 1.2 minutes so I gave up trying.

Posted by Special K @ 11/26/2008 10:59 PM EST

YAY Thanksgiving! Our living room tree is now decorated, and my cat and dog are in love with it (which is why we have to use plastic ornaments on it). Tree in my room goes up tomorrow, with glass ornaments, giant hot lights, and too much tinsel. I can’t wait :D

mandy_reeves: We usually watch that too, but we always get pissed off and/or bored halfway through because the breeds we like aren’t winning. Bull terriers and dachshunds never seem to win :(

BUCKLY!: I’m contemplating going out on Black Friday this year, just for the experience. I probably won’t buy anything that day, but I think it will be exciting to watch other people fight over stuff. Last year a friend of mine grabbed a video camera and went with his friends to a bunch of stores on Black Friday and filmed their adventures. It was pretty funny.

LOL, I don’t know if anyone else has mentioned this yet (don’t have time to read the comments :( ), but Matt just quoted Caboose.

Who is Caboose, you might ask? Why, only one of the most awesome characters on the super awesome machinima series “Red vs. Blue”! One of his most famous quotations is from when he is pretending to be evil. To prove that he really is, he says, “My name is Michael J. Caboose, and I HATE BABIES!”

Some other favourites:

“Time … line? Time is not made out of lines. It is made out of circles. That is why clocks are round!”

“I see a floor, and some walls, and some ceilings … Wait! .. Just one ceiling.”

“I have a lot of moistness that I need to dismoisten!”

Anyways, I just wanted to share that with you all.

Also, I second that “fastest year ever”. I feel like a broken record this holiday season. “Didn’t we just have Christmas?” or “Man, it feels like we just did this”, etc.

On a happier note, we just got back from the big Christmas light display at Calloway Gardens. Check my name to see the wonderment.

Hope everyone has a pleasant Thanksgiving!

Yeah I am pretty terrible at video games but even I can hack it in Smash. You just have to find the right character ;)

That looks very wonderous, Manimal! That reminds me, I need to get over to the Christmas House in the next few weeks.

I just looked through a bunch of the Amazon sale on DVD boxsets. Lots of deals on Simpsons and South Park sets. They’ve got both seasons of Carnivale for $20 each, which is definitely the cheapest I’ve ever seen them. I think I’m going to have to limit myself to a Jodorowsky set as a Christmas gift for my sister and the complete collection of the BBC version of The Office for myself. Hey Matt, would you happen to have a handy link through which I might order these fine products?

Posted by squee4242 @ 11/27/2008 1:45 AM EST

I’m baking some of the best pumpkin bread I’ve ever made, listening to the Sailor Moon Christmas CD, and got the Alistair Sim Christmas Carol DVD today.  Need Frosty, and my collection will be nearly complete.

Unfortunately I lost a tooth today (on purpose), so I’ll have to watch the munching tomorrow.

I love artichokes, growing up my family was the only people I knew who ate them, but Ive never had baby ones! I feel deprived, is there any difference from regular ones? Also, it would be really cool if either the Yoda or the Darth Vader made an appearance in the calender. At least I think it would..

Happy Thanksgiving, guys…We are having 11 people over tomorrow.  Dad’s fixing the 23 pound turkey and I’m making Devilled eggs in the morning.  I drove 6 hours to Lubbock today.

Can’t wait to watch the parade in the morning!  Hope everyone has a great one!!!

Posted by Cameron T. @ 11/27/2008 2:15 AM EST

ULTRAMAN: Great Brawlin! You and Kirby… I can’t believe I forgot to use Toon Link! One of my best characters (next to the 3 you saw) and Mario! Oh well, next time some Toon Link and Mario will be thrown in! To quote Lyn: “Prepare yourself!” :) (I might be on again tonight… just need to enjoy the rest of my slurpee.) A great way to kick off Thanksgiving, I must say!

Hope ya’ll have a good Thanksgiving. =) I’m gonna go help put the bird in and finish makin whatever else needs to be made.
Aaron: Great Brawlin with ya again. =) Guess Matt got tied up with  the Artichokes and other Thanksgiving duties he was assigned. Gotta catch some zzzs so I can catch the parade in the morning. Catch ya later.

I’m baking a “better-than-sex cake” and dying my hair.  I hate dying my hair because I can’t wear my glasses so I’m practically blind for 45 mins.  Anyway, my cake is done.

More to do tomorrow…

Happy Thanksgiving everybody…

Looking over the line-up of 2008 Macy’s parade balloons, I couldn’t help wonder why on earth Universal had dusted off the Beethoven balloon of all things… did a quick Google search and it looks like they are promoting an upcoming direct-to-video movie starring the dog.

Doesn’t look like Garfield made the balloon line-up this year, at least Snoopy and Kermit the Frog will be there.

I’m browsing Amazon’s mp3 download store, and they have a selection of songs by Vanilla Ice, including the theme to “Cool As Ice.”

Posted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/27/2008 11:29 AM EST

Actually I think this has been a pretty good parade so far.  Less reliant on Broadway acts, probably because Broadway is on the verge of nuclear implosion.  Probably the most truly kid-oriented parade of the last several years.  Nice commercials, too!

Posted by Matt @ 11/27/2008 11:32 AM EST

Matt: I actually got excited when I saw the Pikachu balloon. LIGHT UP cheeks! =D I also thought of playin against you in Brawl. lol.

Happy Thanksgiving everybody! Wish I had more time to chat with everybody, but I gotta head out the door and hit the road to drive out of town. Hope everybody has a good one.

I got the parade on in the background now. Looks like some chick is singing to some giant M&M’s right now. Well, innt that sweet?

Well, I’m off. Looking forward to stuffing my face with stuffing and turkeying my face with turkey. I’ll be gone all weekend and won’t really have any internet access, so I’ll catch up with you all when I get back into town on Sunday. Later!

ps…Oh crap, it’s Pikachu!

Posted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/27/2008 1:11 PM EST

Happy Thanksgiving everyone! Getting ready to leave for Jersey for some yummy turkey and stuffing. Just finished watching the parade. What’s up with the announcer basically ruining the Rick roll surprise? Gah!

Posted by Berdo @ 11/27/2008 1:22 PM EST

Hello everyone!  I’ve been keeping up with reading, but haven’t been able to post much lately.  I wanted to stop by and wish Matt, Knacks and crew, and the entire X-E world a Happy Thanksgiving.  I hope you’re all doing well.

Posted by nork @ 11/27/2008 1:55 PM EST

I kept seeing the note that there would be a “special guest musical star.”  The Foster’s Home for Imaginary Friends float pulls up and we get…

Rick ASTLEY?!

Along with the awesome Smurf balloon and the Care Bears float, I guess they needed one more nod to the ’80s heyday.  And I know we were all thinking the same thing when the Pikachu float came into view.

Happy Thanksgiving, everyone!

Man, I think this year’s Advent Calendar looks to be even creepier than last year’s!  Well, we do have an undead Mare I (was that her name?) and Hare, I surmise.  And coconut crabs!  Large arthropods freak me out.

Posted by The Real Andrew @ 11/27/2008 2:04 PM EST

Rick Astley, Smurfs, Care Bears, The crew from Seasame street, who always wear the same clothes (Are they stored away with the floats every year?). However,  nothing can compare to the Special Needs Color Guard. They rocked that sh*t. Go Macy’s! Go T Day! and a Special Thanks to the Special Needs Color Guard, who rocked that sh*t.

Posted by ShadyDave @ 11/27/2008 3:00 PM EST

I totally did not watch the parade. I watched it for the first time last year, and it sounds like this was a year not to miss. Oh well, on to next year.

I tried an Oreo ball last night, yum! I cannot wait to eat some more today!

Posted by IHAQ @ 11/27/2008 3:19 PM EST

I wish I was awake to see the awesome Rickroll at the parade. But alas, I got up at 1 in the afternoon. Being out at a Thanksgiving Eve party will do that to ya.

Someone, PLEASE tell me you recorded the whole thing to send to Matt to review in the future?!

And Beethoven made the balloon lineup but Garfield didn’t?! Scarilege.

I’m also in the process of writing up a Thanksgiving Special for my blog. It will hopefuly be up later tonight if I didn’t pass out from turkey by then.

We got Rick Rolled at the Thanksgiving Day Parade. How will they ever top that now?

Posted by LoneStar76 @ 11/27/2008 4:36 PM EST

I’ve got the whole thing, Norbert (I remember when you missed it in 2005 and begged for me to send my copy to you). Whether I’ll send it to Matt or not depends on if he’s still doing this 20 years from now, and based on his recent track record, I’d say he won’t be. I hope I get the Advent Calendar for as long as I can.

Well, thanksgiving is here. And we have the whole family over. Uncle Fred brought his ducks again this year. They are swimming in the pool. At least he stopped taking about how his toaster likes to sing Devo. And aunt lucile is back with her pop tart surprise. The surprise is that these pop tarts are 15 years old and hard as a rock. Oh there goes Fred talking to his ducks again. At least Morty the fluff is not running around the neighborhood throwing marshmallow peeeps at people screaming “I am the Christmas Bunny.” Fun times.

Posted by Elroy @ 11/27/2008 6:11 PM EST

Speaking of Christmas themed items, I was at a Rite-Aid in my area and came across some stocking stuffers that caught my eye.

Wind-up Polar Bears, Penguins, Moose, etc, that literally CRAP OUT small Brown candies. And by “Crap Out” I mean, the candies fall out from their anuses, as they walk on your table.

The Polar Bear version was tagged as the “Sub Zero Poopin’ Hero”

Headed back to the rocky road of retail tomorrow afternoon - we’ll see what happens. News makes it sound like a blood bath of crappiness, but I’m really wanting the news to proven wrong for once. Self-righteous jerks think they know everything. Punks.

Good Tgiving though - a little different without the parade review, but maybe life is just changing for me/us some.

Hope everyone had a great Thanksgiving.I caught somewhere in the neighborhood of 15 minutes of the Parade this morning. All I was able to catch was the musical/dancing numbers, not a single ballon. I probably wont be going shopping tomorrow..I’m nearly broke, and then theres the fact that I ate enough today to feed a Third World country for quite awhile.

I don’t know if I misread the TV Guide, but I did not see  “It’s A Wonderful Life” playing on any station this year..not even NBC. I found that a bit disconcerting…

Take care shopping tomorrow, everyone. Matt, keep it up ! I’m off to finish this pumpkin pie.

Posted by ChallengeChesnut @ 11/27/2008 9:34 PM EST

I have a perfectly fine working copy of It’s  A Wonderful Life on VHS. YES, VHS! Think i’ll pop that baby in tomorrow. Or this weekend. Whenever. The tryptophan has REALLY slowed me down today.

There hasn’t been a Beethoven since Beethoven’s 5th in 2003. I only know this because I own it on a used rental VHS. I bought it just because of Dave Thomas and John Larroquette starring in the sad thing. Night Court and Strange Brew together? AWESOME! :)

My aunt and uncle just stopped by (well, they’re now leaving thank everything good in the world !) and they’re planning on hitting the stores, so they’ll have to be up by 3 AM…..To..Hell…With…That..

Ultraman…I’ve got IAWL on DVD..but not too see it airing on NBC on Thanksgiving as I sit and eat slices of assorted pies and drink copius amounts of wassail (everyone needs to try that stuff) followed by a few shots of Crown…it’s near unthinkable. I digress.

Back to “Planes, Trains, and Automobiles”.

Posted by ChallengeChesnut @ 11/27/2008 11:10 PM EST

ChallengeChesnut: I hear ya. It’s just so much a part of Thanksgiving and Christmas to see movies like that aired on TV, that when theyr’e not, it just feels different. Oh well. At least we can watch them on home format. I will definitely Brawl this SNT. Matt: just out of curiosity , have you tried playin with any other Smash characters?

Posted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/27/2008 11:25 PM EST

That RickRolling was the GREATEST moment in that parade’s history. Otherwise, it was just another boring parade.

I was disappointed in the Smurf balloon because it was just a generic Smurf. Couldn’t they have put glasses on him to make him Brainy Smurf? Or holding a mirror to make him Vanity Smurf? Or a paintbrush for Painter Smurf? Heck, give him a tattoo like Hardy Smurf.

Well, I ate like a pig (but who doesn’t?) and watched “Click” on Fox, which is sorta a modern version of IAWL.

Posted by JLAJRC @ 11/27/2008 11:42 PM EST

Ultraman: When I sense that my friends are getting too tired of battling Pika, I’ll switch to Lucario or Marth.  (Or Ike preferably, but one of my friends uses him, so I have to use him sparingly.)

Terror Claws: I read it. As always it was good. =)
Matt: It’s always a smart strategic move to practice with different characters I find. As soon as your opponent figures out a strategy to counter you with one character, you can surprise them with your other characters. Also, would you by any chance be interested in battling pokemon? I have Pokemon Diamond too. If so, just let me know your friend code.

I was debating mentioning this, then I saw Matt’s quote regarding the parade:  “Less reliant on Broadway acts, probably because Broadway is on the verge of nuclear implosion.”

Definitely an awesome parade with the Smurf balloon, Rick Astley, et. al.  But I guess they had to have a few Broadway numbers.  And the one I really had a hard time buying into were the ambiguously gay sailors (not that there’s anything wrong with that) the sailors dancing around and singing that “there ain’t….nothing quite…like a dame.”

Posted by Alexander @ 11/28/2008 9:06 AM EST

Heh Alexander I was twittering the parade and I had a very similar reaction to the South Pacific number.

On the topic of the parade, I didn’t see any preshow so maybe I missed him, but where was Willard??? Last year they showed him walking in the parade but they didn’t turn his mic on, this year they don’t even let him show up? That ain’t right.

To start off with, I would so totally spank any willing female X-E’er with that big daddy Sugar Daddy.  Gently, of course.

So, how was the feasting for everybody?  My Soldier/Firefighter Sister recently got a new house, and while the moving in is still going on, she insisted we have Thanksgiving there.  Lots of food going on, and a great pre-housewarming before the official housewarming.

Fabriche’?  Ain’t that some fashion dude on one of those reality shows?

How to deal with a giant Sugar Daddy?  Pop it in the freezer overnight, then smack it’s ass against a flat surface, and voila!  Caramel shards.

And all to get in a store to buy stuff.  I tell ya, I truely believe some people are brainwashed by the media. Those people must have been acting like zombies. Don’t mean to be a downer, but whenever I read about stuff like that, it just sticks with me.

I’m sickened and saddened by that ghastly Wal mart tragedy.  People refused to leave the store AFTER they knew  a man died!  And lets not forget the poor 28 yr old woman who miscarried after she was caught in the same deadly scuffle. That hit home for me, my brother in laws sister is 6 months pregnant with her first.

TERROR CLAWS-
Smash Bros isn’t anything like your typical “fighting game”,it’s a lot more like an old school type game. You know all your moves and such in a matter of minutes. It’s less Street Fighter II and more Yie-Ar Kung Fu. But funnier because it has Zelda and Pikachu.

they are coming out with a Smurf movie in 2010. I had the parade on for about 5 minutes this year and couldnt take anymore. Why does it seem to get worse every year?!  Is it because I am getting older, or does it just really suck now compared to the 80s? LOL.

Yay its snowing here right now in Denver!  This is the first major snow fall we have had which is unusual, usually we get snow much sooner than this.  But I will take it!  I did manage to get all my electric Christmas candles up in the windows, and I have my little fake 2 ft tree down stairs in the hall way, so it feels just great right now, looking out the window watching the snow fall down in huge flakes! Also listening to the Charlie Brown Christmas sound track!  Need some hot coco…

Crazy

I know Maceys has been in financial trouble for quite a few years . Maybe it has to do with that , all they had to do to get most of the people on there was a bottle of Jack (looks at Rick Astley ) and rubbers for nasty little Cyrus . The Ecco float was a hand me down from the Jeff Corwin Animal planet float last year

Posted by Starscream77 @ 11/29/2008 12:03 AM EST

I had a pretty good Thanksgiving. We went to the bf’s family with a slight ulterior motive… she’s financially well-off and paid for all her kids’ weddings, so we’re crossing our fingers especially since my hubby-to-be is the oldest of the grandkids. It was really awesome, his grandma was drinking this HUGE glass of wine and had the greatest assortment of miscellaneous knick-knack decorations everywhere, including some sort of Charlie Brown Great Pumpkin clock. She’s making plans that next year she’s going to get everyone hotel rooms in NYC so we can all go to the Macy’s Day parade. Schweeeeet. Hm, and at one point she asked my man if he had something he wanted to ask her… and I think that may have been hinting towards the wedding-paying-for buuuuut we’ll see. Keeping my fingers crossed. I totally have to have a sushi bar at my wedding, you see.

Meditation, playing games, medicine, or breaking mannequins (not other people’s mannequins obviously)
with a baseball bat. Anything.

Lonestar76: Well, you could play with a stress ball.

Whining about Transformers and Michael Bay is pretty fucking played out at this point. Noone “raped your childhood”,they altered a commercial product to suit the tastes of today. Optimus has had flames before,he’s had a mouth before,Ironhide has been a pickup before,Megatron’s been a jet before, blah blah blah I won’t bother going on. Did you whine on the internet for OVER A YEAR when Optimus was a fire truck? Hell wasn’t Megatron a crocodile or something once?

The brand has evolved continually for 25 years, and will continue to evolve.

Unpopular-as-in-uncommon opinion time: I have no emotional attachment to either Transformers or GI Joe. If I ever end up seeing the current movies, it will only be for the Shia LaBeouf/Adewale Akinnuoye-Agbaje mancandy. There, I said it.

Posted by squee4242 @ 11/29/2008 12:30 PM EST

To me, it’s more about getting tired of Hollywood rehashing the same crap than it is about my childhood being raped.  Come on people, I want to see some new material for once.  Or at least something that’s less run-of-the-mill.

Speaking of remakes, I watched the new Hulk movie last night.  It was pretty awesome, actually.

Well, now that Thanksgiving is over, I’m read for Christmas…time to cue up the classics on Netflix and bust out the Christmas music.

Posted by Teddy Ray @ 11/29/2008 1:29 PM EST

LOL-Busting on something you didn’t even see.

Anyone want to Brawl? I’m going on now.

Posted by Kid Nicky @ 11/29/2008 1:51 PM EST

I wanna go to Braum’s and get some egg nog ice cream.  That shit is goooood.

Posted by Annette @ 11/29/2008 2:31 PM EST

Ultraman- Funny thing is, I have a stress ball. About the G.I. Joe movie coming out, I’m not going to judge
it before it comes out. Ray Park as Snake Eyes looks
great.

One character I’d like to see that’s not in the film is Wild Weasel. They could have made him Cobra Commander’s
personal pilot. And for G.I. Joe, Flash. Of course,
having a laser trooper would push it too far into
science fiction.

Posted by LoneStar76 @ 11/29/2008 4:36 PM EST

Ah Kid Nicky have I told you lately that I love you? And PS are you seeing The Cruxshadows in Philly? I don’t even know where the hell you live other than it’s apparently within reasonable driving distance of Reading.

Posted by Mystie @ 11/29/2008 4:45 PM EST

Kid Nicky:FINALLY! You read my mind. If some people didn’t care for the live action Transformers flick, then that’s fine. To each their own. But when people who didn’t like it, give a reason such as “they look stupid” as their reason for hating it, I can’t help but roll my eyes. lol.

Posted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/29/2008 5:02 PM EST

Since I was running out of places to put my Robot Heroes, I decided to put them on my 3-foot Christmas tree with the other ornaments, and stuck an Optimus Prime one on the very top.  It’s even the one of him holding the Matrix, which means my Christmas tree pretty much rules this year.

Posted by Annette @ 11/29/2008 5:31 PM EST

Hey, all! Hope your Thanksgiving rocked! Tonight after the Civil War, I’m going to convince my family to watch A Garfield Thanksgiving since we didn’t get a chance before. I am having an awesome X-E Mas (ecxuse the pun). I bought all four Star Wars Galactic Heroes packs, 2 Hot Wheels Holiday Hot Rods (same that Matt has), and Oball Stringz, Chewy Snow Day!, A Christmas Story popcorn tin, Garfield Holiday Celebrations, Holiday Treatsa DVD, and a Fizz n Find! Oh, yes. I just need to find A Charlie Brown Christmas tin, Surgar Daddy, and the two Star Wars things. I am now the coolest kid in school.

Posted by Aaron @ 11/29/2008 6:12 PM EST

Oh, and I beat Pokemon Mystery Dungeon: Blue Rescue Team also, and Rayquaza didn’t hit me once. I am now the coolest kid in the world.

Any longtime Trans(Former)fan will tell you, that Comics, Original American ‘toons, Japanese ‘toons, and now Big Budget Movie, will all have their own continuities.  At least, that’s how I see it.  After all, the toys were once two or three toylines from Japan before Hasbro and Takara brought them over to the States.  Just see the movie as another universe’s storyline.  Even the Smurfs were once a Belgian property called Les Schtroumpfs.

Al right, then.  *rubs hand together*  Who wants leftovers?

Posted by kingklash @ 11/29/2008 6:37 PM EST

kingklash: I’m eating turkey sammichs tonight , that’s for sure.

Anyone else notice that Spike TV just plays the entire Star Wars saga over and over now?? Not that I’m complaining - I am watching New Hope again for about the 4th time this month. Coming up next? Yup, Empire Strikes Back.  Makes sense…Revenge of the Sith was last night.  Over and over and over…

Posted by Muppet Baby @ 11/29/2008 8:38 PM EST

Muppet Baby I noticed that too. It’s become an inside joke between my husband and I. I’ll email him while he is working, and ask him to guess what channel is showing Star Wars. I only have the original on DVD but from some reason they are more fun watching it on TV.

Posted by IHAQ @ 11/29/2008 8:44 PM EST

Happy SNT ya’ll, if this turns out to be it. =) I’m tryin to stay warm tonight. I think i’ll do some Kartin.

Posted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/29/2008 8:53 PM EST

I honestly forgot it was Saturday. :)  I’m currently setting things up for the insane month ahead, but I will be posting later tonight.  Unfortunately, could be a few hours from now.

Posted by Matt @ 11/29/2008 8:55 PM EST

Ok then I’m asking my question now.

Girls (or boys), do any of you remember a doll that had a magic wand? The wand had a magnet on the end and when you put the wand up to certain objects it would change the object. The only set I had was a dinner table, and when you used the wand it would flip over the table top over. One side of the table had just a flower arrangement then the other side you would flip to reveal a table set for dinner.

It is driving me crazy to think of the name! Google is being no help to me tonight either.

Posted by IHAQ @ 11/29/2008 9:13 PM EST

Mystie-
I’m not going to bother. I rarely go to shows anymore, and I -like- Cruxshadows, but not really enough to care if I miss it. I did see the Cure earlier in the year though.

Annette-
I’m running out of Robot Heroes space too,and I skipped out on the Beast Wars one. I’ve only bought the G1 and movie ones so far. But let’s face it,I’ll only be able to hold out so long, and then I’ll be buried in the damn things.

Posted by Kid Nicky @ 11/29/2008 9:15 PM EST

Holy moley, I forgot SNT!

Worked hard all day at the store, so just chillin’ now. One more day o’ work before my two day “weekend”. I cant wait and I’m freakin pumped.

Maybe when I move half way into December I can get Brawl and whoop up on some XE’ers.

Posted by Terror Claws @ 11/29/2008 9:38 PM EST

Terror Claws: Just a friendly warning from a fellow X-Er, when you Brawl with Matt, be prepared for cheapness and spamming the likes of which youv’e NEVER seen!!! lol.

Posted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/29/2008 10:08 PM EST

You call it cheapness and spamming.  I call it persistence!

Posted by Matt @ 11/29/2008 10:12 PM EST

LOL! Dangit, you used my own logic against me. =D touche

Posted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/29/2008 10:22 PM EST

Happy SNT, y’all!
You guys really make me want another video game system besides my trusty SNES.  Although, after all these years of never moving on, I’ll bet I can whoop anyone’s ass at Street Fighter II or Super Mario Kart.

Posted by Muppet Baby @ 11/29/2008 10:22 PM EST

Muppet Baby: I’ll take that bet! ;)

Posted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/29/2008 10:25 PM EST

Wow, I feel like an idiot. I totally forgot to tell the bf that I need Smash Bros before he went out and bought me a huge Wii package for Christmas…. I mean, at least that’s what I think he ran out to the mall for on Black Friday after I left for work.

Posted by Mystie @ 11/29/2008 10:33 PM EST

Who here ever plays as Ash Ketchem? I never really used him until today, but he owns. The super attack (when you break the power ball) is awesome. Awesome.

Posted by Kid Nicky @ 11/29/2008 10:41 PM EST

Kid Nicky: Iv’e played as Ash. He’s one of my better characters. And yeah, his special finishing move is cool.

Posted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/29/2008 10:46 PM EST

What is Ash’s smash ball move?  I don’t think I’ve ever seen it.

Posted by Matt @ 11/29/2008 10:51 PM EST

Matt: He calls all three of his Pokemon out at once and has them launch the super moves of their types.

Posted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/29/2008 10:53 PM EST

What is this “SNT”?

Posted by Rev. Back It On Up 13 @ 11/29/2008 10:53 PM EST

That poor dude getting trampled on by a ghetto crowd bum-rushing to get into a wal-mart at 5am for 9 dollar DVD’s and 300 dollar TV’s is  SAD. I bet half of them didn’t even buy anything. Worst part is today is Dec. 1st which means they got their SSI checks. I don’t mean to be racist but most of them were black. I saw the security tape.
