My dying wish is for an owl/camel hybrid, which I call camowl.

Holiday-related DVDs, popcorn and toy cars.

I buy a lot of DVDs. I don't watch all of them. Actually, I probably haven't watched more than half of them. Yet, I continue to buy DVDs. They've sort of become comfort food for when I'm not hungry. The jury's still out on whether I'll actually watch it my latest DVD purchase, but I'll say this: If I haven't seen it by Christmas, it's just another shelf decoration.

The Holiday Treats DVD is awesomeness, but in an odd, arguable way. The total shoestring presentation includes eight random Christmas-themed sitcom episodes, spanning from The Andy Griffith Show to Frasier to Family Ties to The Brady Bunch.

I don't know what it is, but something about this DVD depresses the fuck out of me.

Maybe it's that nearly every included show has at least one actor who is now dead. Maybe it's because so many of these once-sung television heroes now find their opuses bagged together with random Wings episodes, with the DVD production handled by the same company who makes generic brand Honey Smacks. Or maybe it's because three of the episodes are in black-and-white, and if all of the full-color sitcoms on the DVD taught me anything, it's that people only watch black-and-white shows when they're having dramatically depressing personal moments.

The DVD only cost a few bucks, let's say seven, and I kind of want to watch it. When I bought it, I only just kind of wanted to have it, but now, I don't know. It has the Carol Brady Vs. Laryngitis episode. That's something.

Holiday Classics would be perfect to watch if I had the flu. It just seems like such a flu DVD. A small part of me is lobbying for some form of "Flu-ray" joke, but I admit that this is the part of me that I find most disgusting. When you're sick but still somehow bored, you need something that's entertaining enough to hold your attention...but not so entertaining that you have to struggle through "fever vision" to find the pause button when you need to go inside and puke. Honestly, I wouldn't give a shit if I missed the last five minutes of Taxi's Christmas special.

I wrote about tri-flavored holiday popcorn tins last year. I don't know what the statute of limitations is on writing about them again, but it's gotta be longer than a year. Instead, I'll just point out that they're available in some really terrific tins this year. The themes range from A Christmas Story to A Charlie Brown Christmas, and other shows/movies that I cannot remember because I did not buy popcorn tins based on them.

PS, now's as good a time as any to get this out there: I know that there are cases where I use the word "that," and I really should be using the word "which." I also know that I misuse quotation marks. It is a stylistic choice. Besides, you're the asshole who trolls around town saying "for all intensive purposes." I hope Christmas is bad for you.

Oh, and there's a pair of "Holiday Hot Rods" three-packs, from Mattel's Hot Wheels collection. Mattel must have a lot of faith in this concept, as there are roughly 87 different three-packs available.

I've long been a proponent of kids receiving Hot Wheels (or Matchbox) cars on Christmas morning. I guess I have no reason to be -- there's no commission or anything -- but I still am. If nothing else, toy cars are a good way to guarantee a child at least one welcomed surprise on Christmas. Every kid loves Hot Wheels, but nobody asks to get them for Christmas. It'd be like spending a genie wish on a good bagel.

The vehicles are clearly repainted versions of existing Hot Wheels cars, as few would dare insinuate that Santa Claus drives around town in a forest green van unless there was some cost-cutting measure involved. On the upside, I rather like the other car. I'm sure it's a model based in reality, but it looks like a sportscar powered by a giant, vanilla-scented pillar candle.

Let's attach a survey: In the comments, talk about your own personal favorite "flu movies." "Flu TV shows" are also acceptable, though not as catchy.

I second the idea of watching a trilogy while sick. That sounds like fun, and I can actually remember doing that once with the old The Omen movies. (I didn’t make it through the third one.)

Seasonally enough, I’d rank A Christmas Story extremely high on the list of movies to watch while you’re sick.

Any Simpsons DVDs would work very well, too.

Favorite sick show was “Concentration” (I think that’s what it was called) with Alex Trebek. Contestants had to solve word puzzles, with the major win being a NEW CAR.

My mom would make me white rice and it was game shows all day. Jello too. I was the only kid who ever got the flu in my family, so I think the attention was kinda enjoyed.

That show was great too.

Sick-time viewing for me has always been BBC comedy. Basil Fawlty is cute when I’m healthy but when my head is a snot locker, there’s nobody I’d rather make out with.

Except maybe Stephen Fry. I love me some bent noses.

I think that today I’ll list my favorite flu/sick movie as G.I. Joe: The Movie. I always look forward to yelling at the TV when, after being struck by Serpentor’s snake staff, Duke’s wound moves from one side of his chest, to the other, and back again and then “slips into a coma” (copout!). In all honesty. though, I really watch the DVD for the epic intro sequence, the rest of the movie is just background noise while I thumb through Christmas catalogues.

Haley: I don’t think it’s possible for me to forget how hilarious Steve Martin is as a singing, psychotic dentist. It always KILLS me when he jumps off his bike and it keeps going, then suddenly jerks to a stop. XD

Molly: Damn I miss old-school Nick Jr. Maya the Bee, David the Gnome, that fairy tale show from Japan, The Elephant Show… good times.

My flu-ray choices for TV as a kid were anything on Nickelodeon, as well as Disney (anyone remember Lunchbox?). I also dug watching old cartoons my parents taped for my brother and I off TV (Strawberry Shortcake’s Housewarming Surprise, The Care Bears in the Land Without Feelings, all manner of He-Man episodes, etc.)

DVDs:
Kung Pow! with the “Book on Tape” option turned on.
The BBC “Hitchhiker’s Guide to the Galaxy” miniseries.
GhostBusters.
The Adam West Batman movie from the 60′s.
Rollerball, the original James Caan version.
True Stories.
Bustin’ Loose.

TV Shows:
TPIR, the godfather of sick-day viewing.
Reading Rainbow, you deserve to be read to, no matter how old.
A good Western on Turner Classic, like High Noon, or Rooster Cogburn.
A good Noir Classic on Turner, Casablanca always works for me.
Comedy Central Presents, starring your favorite comedian.
My tapes with episodes of MST3K, Earthworm Jim, Freakazoid, The Tick, Beast Wars/Machines, the musical episode of Xena, the last episode of STNG, Ren and Stimpy, Bill and Ted’s Excellent Adventures (The Fox Prime Time Series), the 3-D episode of Married With Children, and other thing recorded without express written consent from Philo T Farnsworth.

Things to watch while loopy with fever:
Akira.
Vampire Hunter D: Bloodlust.
Toys.
Conan the Barbarian/Destroyer.
Godzilla 2000.
Pee Wee’s Big Adventure.
Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory.
Citizen Kane.
Heavy Metal.
The Wall.

In fact, The Wall is a great freak-out to listen to when your brain is all spazzed from high fever and heavy meds. I also recommend In The Court of the Crimson King.

I haven’t had a sick day in years ( at least, not one where I wasn’t so sick that I was just huddled under the quilts in bed medicated into a stupor,) but when I was a Wee Lass and rocks were soft (I’m taking about not only pre-Nick Jr. days but pre-anything-on-cable days!) and PBS was National Educational TV, I’d put on the local NET station and let it run all the educational programming that was the standard daytime schedule in those days. Things like Harriet’s Magic Hats, and Econ and Me, and StoryLords, and ReadIt! and Friendly Giant, and all that other lovely stuff that mostly came out of Canada Educational TV. They were so earnest, and so cheaply produced for the most part, and the best thing was most of them were only 15 minutes long, so falling asleep wasn’t a problem.

Going to have to add my vote in and say that The Price is Right has always been the best sick day show for me. Runner up goes to original American Gladiators.

Although for the last couple years, I usually stick in my Star Trek: The Original Series DVDs on sick days.

My favorite movie as a teen (and now) to watch on a sick day is Pretty in Pink.

“His name is Blane? Oh! That’s a major appliance, that’s not a name!”

Chestnuts roasted by MulanLang @ 11/21/2008 4:29 PM

Sorry about the double post, but I need to call upon the help of all X-ERS! This “sick day” thread reminds me of watching PeeWee’s Playhouse which in turn reminds me of a commercial that may or may not be on the site. It was for a kind of gum or ice cream or ice cream gum that was in little bubble like container and the commerical had an astranaut in it floating in space.

It’s all so hazy… but I somehow remember it. Help me out if you can! Or maybe I just dreamed it all up :S

My best flu tv was after we first got satellite tv with Nick on it: Pete & Pete, Clarissa and Doug. They had great hosts between shows throughout the day too. I’m a sucker for tv channels that used to have live (or at least hosted) segments between shows.

Probably a lost reference apart from maybe a few others like me but: Wacaday, Roland Rat, CBBC Broom Cupboard, DJ Kat.

“Annie” is my #1 flu movie pick, followed by “The Goonies” or anything with the Muppets. Is the “Christmas Story” popcorn tin new this year? I don’t think I’ve ever seen one before. I want one! Too bad they don’t have them here. :(

Chestnuts roasted by Zedral Z @ 11/21/2008 5:06 PM

Ugg… tin popcorn. For the last 5 years we’ve beg my grandma not to get us it, but every year she still does. Last year I gave my tin away and my parents still have their’s in the basement pantry. I don’t know what my mom is keeping it for! Another one for The Price is Right. I wonder if Bob knew he had such a big following of kids who watched when they were sick! I haven’t watched it since the mid 90′s though. Knock on wood I haven’t had the flu in; well I actually can’t remember the last time I had the flu… so at least 10+ years. Now when I am home sick with a bad cold I tend to watch 80′s movies.. Ferris Bueller, Pretty in Pink, etc. If I can’t get the dvd player to work; which is more often then not, I’ll just turn on TCM and watch a good black and white movie.

Chestnuts roasted by Alyssa @ 11/21/2008 5:17 PM

My ultimate flu movie is Foul Play with Chevy Chase and Goldie Hawn.

Kingklash, I’m with you. MST3K is excellent for my sick-vision. Joel always sounds like he’s sicker than I am, no matter how bad I feel. Must be all the mushrooms.

Chestnuts roasted by Rev. Back It On Up 13 @ 11/21/2008 6:22 PM

I would just like to say that tin popcorn is awesome! But if your worried about it’s freshness, you could always buy the flavors of popcorn seprately, and then add them to a empty tin with a divider. Just a suggestion.

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/21/2008 6:35 PM

Rev. Back It On Up 13, if I wanted to fall asleep fast, all I’d have to do would be to put on Red Zone Cuba. ::shudder::

Chestnuts roasted by Cheetara @ 11/21/2008 6:54 PM

I go back and watch TV shows I have on DVD when I’m sick. Right now, it’s Deadwood.

Chestnuts roasted by Malia @ 11/21/2008 6:56 PM

Throw me into the PRICE IS RIGHT crowd.

I remember watching SUPERMAN when I was “sick” one day in 5th grade.
Last time I was sick, I watched REVENGE OF THE SITH.

Chestnuts roasted by The Manimal @ 11/21/2008 8:00 PM

I really can’t remember what I watched when I was younger and sick, but recently, when I spent 13 months in the hospital, I watched obscene amounts of The Price is Right, TBS (as covered by Special K), and FX. I swear I’ve seen every episode of That ’70s Show, King of Queens, and Seinfeld.

Chestnuts roasted by Teddy Ray @ 11/21/2008 8:12 PM

It’s OFFICIALLY dropped to FREEZING temp. in my area. Bring on Thanksgiving AND Christmas ! I’m ready!

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/21/2008 8:53 PM

I watched The Price is Right whenever I was home sick.

Then I would put on VH1 and watch their countdowns they would have on all day, which is why I know a ridiculous amount of pop culture events from before I was born. It took me until I was like, fifteen to realize that not everyone did that when they were sick and so they had no opinion on Paul McCartney’s best post-Beatles love song.

Hey, you guys might be interested in checking out the new 2009 lego line. It’s going back to a more oldschool approach, with simpler sets and relying more on the classic bricks. The pirates line is particularly cool. Some of the sets are turning up at Toys R Us and Lego Stores now. I’m jazzed about it.

Chestnuts roasted by Robot @ 11/21/2008 9:37 PM

Robot

Yes, I am stoked about the return of PIRATES since I missed that line when I was a kid. Lego has been hitting home runs as of late…
