11/20/2008: Holiday-related DVDs, popcorn and toy cars.

I buy a lot of DVDs. I don’t watch all of them. Actually, I probably haven’t watched more than half of them. Yet, I continue to buy DVDs. They’ve sort of become comfort food for when I’m not hungry. The jury’s still out on whether I’ll actually watch it my latest DVD purchase, but I’ll say this: If I haven’t seen it by Christmas, it’s just another shelf decoration.

The Holiday Treats DVD is awesomeness, but in an odd, arguable way. The total shoestring presentation includes eight random Christmas-themed sitcom episodes, spanning from The Andy Griffith Show to Frasier to Family Ties to The Brady Bunch.

I don’t know what it is, but something about this DVD depresses the fuck out of me.

Maybe it’s that nearly every included show has at least one actor who is now dead. Maybe it’s because so many of these once-sung television heroes now find their opuses bagged together with random Wings episodes, with the DVD production handled by the same company who makes generic brand Honey Smacks. Or maybe it’s because three of the episodes are in black-and-white, and if all of the full-color sitcoms on the DVD taught me anything, it’s that people only watch black-and-white shows when they’re having dramatically depressing personal moments.

The DVD only cost a few bucks, let’s say seven, and I kind of want to watch it. When I bought it, I only just kind of wanted to have it, but now, I don’t know. It has the Carol Brady Vs. Laryngitis episode. That’s something.

Holiday Classics would be perfect to watch if I had the flu. It just seems like such a flu DVD. A small part of me is lobbying for some form of “Flu-ray” joke, but I admit that this is the part of me that I find most disgusting. When you’re sick but still somehow bored, you need something that’s entertaining enough to hold your attention…but not so entertaining that you have to struggle through “fever vision” to find the pause button when you need to go inside and puke. Honestly, I wouldn’t give a shit if I missed the last five minutes of Taxi’s Christmas special.

I wrote about tri-flavored holiday popcorn tins last year. I don’t know what the statute of limitations is on writing about them again, but it’s gotta be longer than a year. Instead, I’ll just point out that they’re available in some really terrific tins this year. The themes range from A Christmas Story to A Charlie Brown Christmas, and other shows/movies that I cannot remember because I did not buy popcorn tins based on them.

PS, now’s as good a time as any to get this out there: I know that there are cases where I use the word “that,” and I really should be using the word “which.” I also know that I misuse quotation marks. It is a stylistic choice. Besides, you’re the asshole who trolls around town saying “for all intensive purposes.” I hope Christmas is bad for you.

Oh, and there’s a pair of “Holiday Hot Rods” three-packs, from Mattel’s Hot Wheels collection. Mattel must have a lot of faith in this concept, as there are roughly 87 different three-packs available.

I’ve long been a proponent of kids receiving Hot Wheels (or Matchbox) cars on Christmas morning. I guess I have no reason to be — there’s no commission or anything — but I still am. If nothing else, toy cars are a good way to guarantee a child at least one welcomed surprise on Christmas. Every kid loves Hot Wheels, but nobody asks to get them for Christmas. It’d be like spending a genie wish on a good bagel.

The vehicles are clearly repainted versions of existing Hot Wheels cars, as few would dare insinuate that Santa Claus drives around town in a forest green van unless there was some cost-cutting measure involved. On the upside, I rather like the other car. I’m sure it’s a model based in reality, but it looks like a sportscar powered by a giant, vanilla-scented pillar candle.

Let’s attach a survey: In the comments, talk about your own personal favorite “flu movies.” “Flu TV shows” are also acceptable, though not as catchy.

Happy weekend all! We just got back from Friday night sushi/drinking, and this is happiness.

Ghosted by Matt @ 11/21/2008 10:51 PM EST

I usually watch whatever movie I have recently picked up at the time as my “flu” or “sick” movie. Last time that happened I watched Iron Man.

I will say that Princess Bride is definitely one of the best movies to use as your stand-by “flu” movie. Good choice, those of you who mentioned it.

Also, I dunno what happened, but ever since I installed the latest version of Flash last week, neither the Christmas or even the Halloween Jukeboxes will load. Does anyone know why or can anyone tell me how to fix it? I can’t fully get into the Christmas spirit until I’m able to listen to Matt’s Christmas mix.

Thanks.

Without reading anyone else’s comments, I love watching futurama dvd’s with the commentary audio track turned on. when i am sick, i usually stay home alone, and hearing people talk about a show that im watching makes me feel less lonely. I also like to watch old seinfeld episodes, because i have seen them all, and the movies the breakfast club and willy wonka and the chocolate factory (gene wilder and that technicolor set totally get me all happy)

Mine are

Brewsters Millions

pretty woman

also my fave thing with the flu is to watch gameshow network. seriously.

I remember having a fever and watching all 6 hours of The Jacksons:an American Dream tv movie. The one about the Jackson five.

Strangely enough, the last two times I was home from work sick I inevitably watched “The Price is Right.” Even if Drew Carey is no Bob Barker (and c’mon, the show REALLY hasn’t been right since Rod Roddy passed on), the wheel and the ‘Higher/Lower’ yodeler are still as awesome as they’ve always been. I think another reason is because it’s either that or soap operas, which I get enough of at freckin’ work.

When I was a kid and we had actual independent stations (read: non-network) in New Orleans, I would watch crap like “Charles in Charge,” “The Facts of Life,” “Small Wonder”…oh God, the lower annals of ’80s television while it was still new. Also remember tuning into “USA Cartoon Express” seeing Pac-Man in the bumpers and praying that they would air just one episode. Alas, they never did…

Oh yeah, The Breakfast CLub! It’s like the perfect flu movie ever possibly even ever uh!

Ghosted by Hazard @ 11/22/2008 2:56 AM EST

That DVD looks amazing…Matt you find the best stuff!
When I am sick I can’t go wrong with the simple life seasons 1-3…they provide exactly what you described & I can honestly say I have not viewed them unless ill.

Will look for this DVD the next time I’m shopping!

The Breakfast Club is a good sick movie. As is The Princess Bride.

Sorry if this has already been covered, but whats the deal with Dec 23rd on the Advent Calendar? And accidental sneak peak of whats to come? Either way I’m excited! =)

Jay Firestorm
If it’s anything like last year, it’s a convoluted Mystery that reveals the evil intentions of whatever evilness there is lurking this year.

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 11/22/2008 9:51 AM EST

Jay Firestorm,

Go back a few posts and you’ll find an official “Box 23″ thread. Our small band of “Advent-urers” follow the near daily clues to the larger mystery.

checked out box 23… it appears as though that is the day matt will finally go on a camping trip to jupiters moon amalthea… which is apparently full of holes, and has giant crabs… hmm….

Pretty!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Now I want to get my tree out…

Man, Saturday morning cartoons just plain suck now.

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 11/22/2008 11:16 AM EST

I know. I can’t tolerate them for ten seconds. I watched all the girly cartoons when I was younger, but now the choices are trampy girls or old episodes of Raven and Hannah Montana. God save us.

I miss the Smurfs, Shirt-Tales, Get Along Gang, Garfield and Friends, Gummi Bears, the Pacman one, Flintstones, Jetsons, etc. When everything was fun and happy. Even 80’s cartoon evil was fun. Gargamel…

Ghosted by Amy @ 11/22/2008 12:16 PM EST

Oooh, LIGHTS

Ghosted by Hazard @ 11/22/2008 12:46 PM EST

Ha! I actually have the flu right now…in Montreal…on a road trip. Dammit. Puked the whole way here.

“The Goonies” is at the top of my list.

Ghosted by Muppet Baby @ 11/22/2008 1:31 PM EST

I find it very telling that most people’s choices of “flu-ray” movies/TV are the only types of things I ever watch. ADHD is awesome.

I went to Target this morning and got a jumpstart on my Christmas season with various goodies. Got some Royal Dansk butter cookies, Southern Comfort “vanilla spice” eggnog (I hated the regular stuff last year, but the vanilla was intriguing enough to try anyway), some Rudolph ornaments, a Vince Guaraldi Trio CD (the music from A Charlie Brown Christmas), and finally found Pomegranate 7UP! At long last!

I also got one of those heater/fan combos because our central heating is busted. Luckily we live in Florida so we won’t freeze or something, but it’s still pretty chilly. The hardest thing was that Target also had some pretty cool Beatles and Pink Floyd t-shirts but I had to be responsible and not get them because I need real clothes for work. Maturity sucks :(

Ghosted by jazzy @ 11/22/2008 1:49 PM EST

Hey Matt, why is Dec. 23rd opened already on the advent Calendar?

Ghosted by Brent @ 11/22/2008 2:05 PM EST

I love infomericals. They should have an infomerical channel. Not like QVC or Shop NBC. Just hours and hours of endless infomercials. I want to hear about Body Clenses from a guy named Clee talkin about his daughters bowel movements. I want psedo-chefs selling me GT Xpress 101’s (Mmmm Stuffed Soup) I want Popeil in primetime! I want steam mops and shark vacs. Billy Mays would be my Letterman! KABOOOM! Magic Bullets and Homes for $300.00. I’ll watch it all day and night in my Slanket.

Ghosted by Kvetching @ 11/22/2008 2:10 PM EST

While Rod Roddy was really cool (Confused? You won’t be, after this episode of Soap.), I go back to the Johnny Olsen days. That’s the man who pioneered “Come on DOWN!” and “It’s a NEW CAR!” That man could really get himself into acting the nut during the Showcases.

Ghosted by kingklash @ 11/22/2008 2:12 PM EST

Hey MulanLang, I think you’re talking about Bubble Eze. That was one of those commercials that I also thought wasn’t real for a long time.

Oh, I also think the animated Garfield specials would be good sick viewing. Probably the Saturday morning show too.

Ghosted by Annette @ 11/22/2008 2:51 PM EST

Sorry to DP but I just found this neat news article about collecting discontinued products. Click-a my name.

Ghosted by Annette @ 11/22/2008 2:59 PM EST

Thanks Annette! I was talking with my mom last night (coincidentally her name is Annette) and she said that she kept a bunch of PeeWee’s playhouse eps recorded somewhere in her attic or basement.

I will have to digg through them and if I find that commercial (or others) I will make sure to upload and post them!

Ghosted by MulanLang @ 11/22/2008 3:44 PM EST

I usually only get sick around the last week of november or first week of december, so It’s usually something christmassy, The ranken bass specials mostly,
Picked up that Garfield holiday specials dvd a couple of weeks ago, I had never even heard of the thanksgiving special before then.

Ghosted by JoshC @ 11/22/2008 3:49 PM EST

That DVD has a holiday episode of Wings. FOUL! FOUL!

Ghosted by palmerholic @ 11/22/2008 4:54 PM EST

I’m not sure if I’m behind times or ahead of them, but BOX 23 is open! It has an even wider assortment of strange images from which we can draw insane conclusions.

Ghosted by PlantMonster @ 11/22/2008 5:05 PM EST

Does anyone know if there is a page where links to all the parade reviews are collected? I have only ever read the 1984 one, how many are there?

Ghosted by drew do @ 11/22/2008 5:07 PM EST

Lucky me! My Uncle stopped by and dropped off some early Thanksgivin food. Looks great! I think i’ll chow down on this while trying to decipher the box 23 mystery.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/22/2008 5:27 PM EST

I think some evil coconut crabs from Jupiter will take over Christmas using Photoshop effects!!!!

Ghosted by IG-88 @ 11/22/2008 5:34 PM EST

I hope Tarantino isn’t directing the advent calendar this year and it’s told in backward order.

Ghosted by Henry Jones Jr. @ 11/22/2008 5:46 PM EST

IG-88: I think the Crabs are minions and not the main enemies. Although i’m sure they’ll still be involved somehow.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/22/2008 5:49 PM EST

I was thinking about Hey I’m Jeff asking about ideas for a “How to” speech for his public speaking class. I think an awesome idea would be “How to Prepare Charlie Brown’s Thanksgiving Dinner,” using Matt’s article as the basis.

Ghosted by Teddy Ray @ 11/22/2008 5:57 PM EST

Flu movie: Back to the Future
Flu TV show: Night Court

I really haven’t been sick this year. It feels like the Sword of Damocles hanging over me, ready to send me running for the Nyquil.

Ghosted by Spacezombe @ 11/22/2008 6:54 PM EST

Stupid laptop. It’s “Spacezombie”.

Ghosted by Spacezombie @ 11/22/2008 6:55 PM EST

this advent thing is dangerous this year. i dont have to worry about graduating college this year, so my nights are open. i already have started a list of “clues”. Also, is there a special post mad eon 12/10/02? that was the date on the amalthea screen shot page…

Happy Saturday everybody!

Finally found 7-Up Pom last night. I bought six bottles and two 12-packs. Haven’t decided yet whether that was overkill, or not enough.

Ghosted by squee4242 @ 11/22/2008 9:10 PM EST

hopefully not…i found the cran sierra mist for 88 cents a bottle so i bought a ton. by the end i felt like i had red teeth.

leigha-did you find the box 23 thread? it’s a couple days back on the blog. i think if you click main index it’s at the very bottom of the page.

Ghosted by Amy @ 11/22/2008 9:14 PM EST

I’m having trouble deciding if I like Pom 7 Up or Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash better — but I think I’m going to go with the latter. If someone told me I could drink nothing but Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash for the rest of my life, I probably wouldn’t cry.

Ghosted by Matt @ 11/22/2008 9:15 PM EST

A month ago I would have agreed with you. But then again, I didn’t mix a single bit of it with vodka.

Ghosted by Amy @ 11/22/2008 9:22 PM EST

When I’m sick I go with The Goonies like Muppet Baby said, but with the commentary! I’m also big on watching Labyrinth like a few others said, and Dark Crystal. Maybe some Karate Kid?

I hope we get a new thread for SNT. It will be my first time participating in it for a long long long time. Damn husbands stealing the computer!

Ghosted by IHAQ @ 11/22/2008 9:31 PM EST

I STILL haven’t had any luck findin this Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash! Knowin my luck I’ll find it, try it, and end up not even likein it. lol.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/22/2008 9:31 PM EST

IHAQ, I wasn’t going to do one but I am overjoyed by the rare appearance of your name, and will post one now. :)

Ghosted by Matt @ 11/22/2008 9:33 PM EST

Kliens in Maryland advertises the life out of the Pomegranate 7up , since the owners are Jewish. Its a big Rosh Hashanah thing for the Jews to eat poms , it symbolizes all their sins through the year and many folks carry it over to Hanukkah . So its not really a Christmas soda its more of a Hanukkah drink . But im sure they wont get pissed if we gentiles enjoy it too. The taste is very smooth and really tastes nothing like 7up , and has a nice fruity after tase but not a strong taste . The Canada Dry with Cranberries also doesnt taste like Ginger Ale its like a whole other drink .

Beetlejuice is a definite flu movie for me, especially under a Nyquil high, egads…
