11/20/2008: Holiday-related DVDs, popcorn and toy cars.

I buy a lot of DVDs. I don’t watch all of them. Actually, I probably haven’t watched more than half of them. Yet, I continue to buy DVDs. They’ve sort of become comfort food for when I’m not hungry. The jury’s still out on whether I’ll actually watch it my latest DVD purchase, but I’ll say this: If I haven’t seen it by Christmas, it’s just another shelf decoration.

The Holiday Treats DVD is awesomeness, but in an odd, arguable way. The total shoestring presentation includes eight random Christmas-themed sitcom episodes, spanning from The Andy Griffith Show to Frasier to Family Ties to The Brady Bunch.

I don’t know what it is, but something about this DVD depresses the fuck out of me.

Maybe it’s that nearly every included show has at least one actor who is now dead. Maybe it’s because so many of these once-sung television heroes now find their opuses bagged together with random Wings episodes, with the DVD production handled by the same company who makes generic brand Honey Smacks. Or maybe it’s because three of the episodes are in black-and-white, and if all of the full-color sitcoms on the DVD taught me anything, it’s that people only watch black-and-white shows when they’re having dramatically depressing personal moments.

The DVD only cost a few bucks, let’s say seven, and I kind of want to watch it. When I bought it, I only just kind of wanted to have it, but now, I don’t know. It has the Carol Brady Vs. Laryngitis episode. That’s something.

Holiday Classics would be perfect to watch if I had the flu. It just seems like such a flu DVD. A small part of me is lobbying for some form of “Flu-ray” joke, but I admit that this is the part of me that I find most disgusting. When you’re sick but still somehow bored, you need something that’s entertaining enough to hold your attention…but not so entertaining that you have to struggle through “fever vision” to find the pause button when you need to go inside and puke. Honestly, I wouldn’t give a shit if I missed the last five minutes of Taxi’s Christmas special.

I wrote about tri-flavored holiday popcorn tins last year. I don’t know what the statute of limitations is on writing about them again, but it’s gotta be longer than a year. Instead, I’ll just point out that they’re available in some really terrific tins this year. The themes range from A Christmas Story to A Charlie Brown Christmas, and other shows/movies that I cannot remember because I did not buy popcorn tins based on them.

PS, now’s as good a time as any to get this out there: I know that there are cases where I use the word “that,” and I really should be using the word “which.” I also know that I misuse quotation marks. It is a stylistic choice. Besides, you’re the asshole who trolls around town saying “for all intensive purposes.” I hope Christmas is bad for you.

Oh, and there’s a pair of “Holiday Hot Rods” three-packs, from Mattel’s Hot Wheels collection. Mattel must have a lot of faith in this concept, as there are roughly 87 different three-packs available.

I’ve long been a proponent of kids receiving Hot Wheels (or Matchbox) cars on Christmas morning. I guess I have no reason to be — there’s no commission or anything — but I still am. If nothing else, toy cars are a good way to guarantee a child at least one welcomed surprise on Christmas. Every kid loves Hot Wheels, but nobody asks to get them for Christmas. It’d be like spending a genie wish on a good bagel.

The vehicles are clearly repainted versions of existing Hot Wheels cars, as few would dare insinuate that Santa Claus drives around town in a forest green van unless there was some cost-cutting measure involved. On the upside, I rather like the other car. I’m sure it’s a model based in reality, but it looks like a sportscar powered by a giant, vanilla-scented pillar candle.

Let’s attach a survey: In the comments, talk about your own personal favorite “flu movies.” “Flu TV shows” are also acceptable, though not as catchy.

hey matt, i’ve been a long time reader of your site, since 2002 and im totally stoked on the 2008 christmas garb.

Man, those popcorn buckets are terrible. Maybe I’m just spoiled by hot popcorn. :P

Ghosted by Ben @ 11/20/2008 10:23 PM EST

Let me clarify: the popcorn itself is awful. The tins are useful for all sorts of things! (but mostly storage)

Whoa, caps is a harsh mistress, I’ve never been first in a comment and I feel like I just ruined it by not taking the time to spell check. Anyhow, I’ve been reading since I was 14 and first discovered the site looking for retro commercials. Since then I’ve participated in every Advent calendar, Halloween extravaganza and whatever else. I even submitted a drawing for a halloween contest under the guise of shamblingyeti. I just want to say I appreciate the dedication to the site.

For some reason that Van reminds me of Badminton.

I know it’s odd, but my favorite “Sick” movie, as I’ve never ever had the flu, is Office Space. I don’t know what it is, but Office Space always makes me feel better.

Ghosted by Jester @ 11/20/2008 10:38 PM EST

I’ve definitely never been a fan of popcorn in a tin. Mint flavored M&Ms are more synonymous with yuletide seasons than most other things to me, for some odd reason.

I had a conversation earlier today about “sick movies”. As in, movies you watch when your sick. I argued Lord of the Rings because after 45 minutes you’ll be asleep, getting the rest you should be getting. Or Star Wars. I used to watch Episodes IV-VI in high school when I stayed home for school.

And if you’re home sick for work, I think it’s a law that you have to watch The Price Is Right. But that might have been lifted now that Drew Carey hosts.

Popcorn Tins are a season favorite of mine. But I’m also just a big fan of anything inside of tin packaging. I was driving home tonight and saw not one but two houses with Christmas lights up. A small but enjoyable taste of things to come.

OH HELL WHAT’S GOIN ON IN THE CALENDAAAARARRRRRRRRRRRAAARRARARARARARARARARARRRR

shit be REALLY HERE yo

Brian, you are nuts, the Drew is amazing. My personal favorite “home sick” shows were Little House and the New Yankee Workshop. That is what happens when you grow up in a house with NO CABLE! I remember one episode of the workshop where Norm carved a sphere out of wood, who the hell wants that.

And does anyone know where those tins are being sold? I want a Charlie Brown one.

I WILL have a popcorn tin this year.

I like the cheese the best but I feel the plain popcorn is the worst, total waste of space in the tin. Luckily, my husband just told me he likes it, so HOORAY and I return to my original statement:

I WILL have a popcorn tin this year.

In other news, thanks to XE I am now listening to Christmas music and eating McDonalds takeout, which for some reason I’m choosing to categorize as “Christmasy Activity”.

I haven’t had the full blown flu in at least 5 years, and that was even questionable. I do have a memory from when my little brother got the flu as a child. All throughout his week-long illness he would only watch, Marry Poppins.

Ghosted by Dane @ 11/20/2008 10:49 PM EST

Matt: I think they are depressing because, if you were a true fan of the show you would probably have all the seasons, so these are the dregs they put on a DVD for the non-serious fans of the show. That’s what depresses me anyway. I love Lucy (pun intended) but I’m not the kind of fan who owns all 89 seasons of the show. I guess what I’m saying is that it points out that you’re not as big of a fan as you thought you were and that’s mean.

As for “flu-ray” (there, that’s just for you), I tend to watch what I consider the “epic” movies that are just too long/intense/convoluted to enjoy on a casual Sunday afternoon. These would be movies like Big Fish, The Butterfly Project, Memoirs of a Geisha, 28 Days Later, etc. I love all of those movies, but those are movies I have to pay attention to, I can’t just pop them in and build a webpage while they play.

For TV shows, anything on TBS is go with me. I especially enjoy Yes, Dear, King of Queens, and Home Improvement, though it does depress me that these shows are no longer airing. And I always seem to watch Just Shoot Me even though I hate that show. It just sucks me in! I can’t look away! Yet I always feel a little disgusted with myself after watching it.

Ghosted by Special K @ 11/20/2008 10:52 PM EST

I actually stayed home sick today. I watched I Love Lucy. And then took a nap.

Anyway, I seem to remember growing up watching “Back to the Future” and the Star Trek movies as “sick movies” When I wasn’t sleeping, anyway.

Also, sick days were days for playing video games. Like, all day long. Being sick as a kid meant chilling with Mega Man and Mario all day.

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 11/20/2008 10:52 PM EST

The popcorn tins have now been a tradition at my gram’s house for at least the past ten years. And it’s kind of become a problem because she now stores so much stuff in the old ones that in order to find the current popcorn tin you first have to go through the tins of stored knitting supplies and crap. Because who remembers if it’s the year of the Santa tin, or the snowflakes, or the cartoony toys?

I’m totally in the spirit now, what with the AC coming up and the cranberry soda out. And the special Junior Mints at Target. I was resisting holiday spirit for awhile because I felt like all the stupid corporations are just foisting it on us too early. Plus, I’ve been having fun with NaNoWriMo (National Novel Writing Month). No more grinching now though.

Flu movies: Fantasia. I hate it unless I’m sick. And old Teddy Ruxpin episodes on tape, commercials and everything. I <3 Tweeg.

Ghosted by hobbitsubculture @ 11/20/2008 10:53 PM EST

Flu shows….well, I have not had the flu in years. *knocks hard on wood desk* but in school when I did, it was always The Price is Right, followed by the trashy back-in-the-day talk shows…like Montel, before he grew a soul. I actually wrote about shows to watch while sick one time, I just am too lazy to look it up.

I have never been the recipient of those popcorn tins, I actually have always wanted one though.

AND…Matt, thats for all the posts. I love em.

Ghosted by kb @ 11/20/2008 10:57 PM EST

When I’m sick I like to mix the two categories. I watch one of the various tv show season dvds I have collected. I just load 3 of the discs into my player and do not get up unless I am forced to. I am almost hoping I get sick so I catch up on some shows, even if my dog hates some of them.

Ghosted by pureval @ 11/20/2008 11:11 PM EST

Oh God, number #1 – Little Shop of Horrors on DVD. It has this great feature all logical DVD’s have (but surprisingly not all) where, if left on the menu for more that five minutes, it plays the film again. Through sleep and hallucinating you will definitely find yourself catching your favorite part more than once, and I do think everyone forgets how funny Steve Martin is as a singing, psychotic dentist.

The number one film of all time is also perfect for this, or any sort, of occasion. Back to the Future: Part 2, baby. On a side note, I’m so pumped for Advent Calendar that I’m omitting a red and green mist from every pore – I assure you, it’s very festive.

Ghosted by Haley @ 11/20/2008 11:20 PM EST

santa doesn’t drive a forest green van, dudes. it’s a red geo tracker ^^

my sick movies: Back to the Future, Labyrinth, Wizard of Oz (i’m REALLY sick if I’m watching this, just because it makes me very warm and fuzzy), Buffy anything (i love buffy), Ginger Snaps, Princess Diaries… and a bunch of others I can’t remember.

I don’t remember having the flu. Though I did watch Air America one time when I was sick. I don’t remember if
it was a cold or an allergic reaction. When I’m feeling
bad, (not physically), I watch Fawlty Towers. John
Cleese is so funny. The Tick is fun to watch too. The
animated original version of The Tick of course. Though
the live action version one is okay. I also watch old
episodes of G.I. Joe. Cobra Commander sure had some
asenine plots back then. Like using a laser to carve
his image on the Moon. Home Improvement had good
Christmas episodes. G.I. Joe had one good Christmas
episode, Cobra Claws are coming to town.

Matt, I think I had a Hot Wheels vehicle just like that
RV vehicle back in the Eighties. My RV might be from
the same molds they used to make the one that you
showed us here. We’ve been typing about Christmas here
the past days, and I still have leftover Halloween
candy in the pantry.

I’m feeling a bit more Christmassy myself after last week’s bout with the pre-holiday blues. I used some of the money I earned raking leaves for my landlady yesterday to buy my first Christmas present of the year, for my best friend, and I just confirmed with my sister that I’d like to join her at our mother and stepfather’s house in Cape May County for Thanksgiving this year.

I’d probably spend the day sleeping (which is what I did the last time I had the flu), but if I were up for watching something, it might be a musical to cheer me up, or maybe an epic or a mini-series (like the one I’m watching right now, “Centennial”) that takes a while and has a lot going on to distract me from how lousy I feel.

Ghosted by starwenn @ 11/20/2008 11:39 PM EST

Futurama. Pure comfort food for 2 of the senses. The world is fleshed out enough for half an hour of escapism, but the writing isn’t smart enough that you have to pay attention to get it. You know how potheads say ‘it’s always 4:20 somwhere’? Well, Futurama’s always playing on network cable somewhere.

Ghosted by Evilsquatch @ 11/20/2008 11:41 PM EST

It’s been said a couple of times, but for some reason whenever I’m truly home sick I always end up watching the Price is Right. Drew Carey or Bob Barker, it doesn’t matter. I’m not sure its so much a law of man, but more a law of nature. I never intend to watch it, it just turns out that way. Its weird…

After that if I can’t find anything on cable its usually some mindless action or sci fi movie.

Ghosted by Rob @ 11/20/2008 11:43 PM EST

I was going to add a correction and say that potheads actually probably say ‘It’s always 4:20 somEwhere’, but then I thought, y’know, all the potheads I know don’t bother searching for a justification for the light-up. So they wouldn’t even notice if ’somewhere’ was spelled right or not. Then that made me think about Matt’s calling out of the grammar nazis, and I wonder if somebody who isn’t familiar with the phrase ‘intents and purposes’ would know whether or not ‘nazis’ should be capitalized.

Ghosted by Evilsquatch @ 11/20/2008 11:48 PM EST

You must have read kb’s blog, haven’t you, Matt?

I’ve never eaten Tin Popcorn, but it really wouldn’t be Christmas without em.

As for “Flu Movies/Shows,” I’ve never really had one. But on Super Bowl Sunday I came down with a stomach virus/food poisoning and was left for dead on the couch. What was on besides the big game? Why, the Puppy Bowl, of course! The guaranteed pick-me-up to any sick day!

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 11/21/2008 12:06 AM EST

I would watch Nick Jr., and that was in my early teens. Have I just forfeited my manhood by admitting that?

Ghosted by Monte @ 11/21/2008 12:17 AM EST

I hate January worse than anything.

I’m sorry. It’s only November and I just shit all over December. I’m just Reverend Buzzkill (13) today.

Ghosted by Rev. Back It On Up 13 @ 11/21/2008 12:20 AM EST

It all depends on when you were in your early teens, Monte. Nick Jr. pretty much became The Blues Clues/Dora Block by the time I hit my teen years.

But when I was a little kid and home sick, the good ol’ days of Nick Jr. was where it’s at!

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 11/21/2008 12:21 AM EST

I don’t really have any specific movies that I watch whenever I get sick. I pretty much watch whatever looks appealin to me. Although I like back to the future and it’s sequels. Same goes for TV shows too. Whatever looks appealin to me. Mostly though, I play games. I’m a gamer first and foremost. I’m alot like Cameron T. .

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/21/2008 12:26 AM EST

I’m tempted to turn on the x-mas jukebox and get myself a delicious (nom nom nom) popcorn tin, but I MUST RESIST. It’s not even December yet.

Is that green van the Little St. Nick from the Beach Boys classic carol?

Ghosted by kentdog @ 11/21/2008 12:38 AM EST

It must have been my preteens then, because I remember Blue’s Clues et al. coming along later on. I was thinking more along the lines of Fred Penner and his happy feet, and that show about gnomes starring the dad from “Happy Days.”

That Santa van, by the way, totally makes me think of the ending of “Christmas Evil.” Happy holidays indeed.

Ghosted by Monte @ 11/21/2008 12:53 AM EST

Ironically, whenever I get sick it happens on a friggin Saturday, and by Monday I’m fine! But when I do get sick, and end up at home between 1:00 and 3:00 PM, it is not movies I’m craving, it is TV. Usually it is soaps, although I still long for The Disney Afternoon, Animaniacs, Tiny Toon Adventures, and a few Charles in Charge reruns! I also remember having days off/being sick as a kid and watching these low budget court dramas on Fox. I think one of them was titled “Divorce Court,” and there was another judge show. They would re-enact various legal cases, horribly.

Ghosted by Tresjolie9 @ 11/21/2008 1:07 AM EST

When I had my wisdom teeth removed over Christmas break in college, I made my parents go out and rent Boogie Nights for me. That movie kind of has the same arc as the flu. One minute you’re riding high, then everything starts to fall apart and the court system is taking your children away. Soon enough, however, things start to turn around. You’re not 100%, but you still have that bag of cash you walked away with from the doughnut shop massacre, and you use it as seed money to open your own stereo store. Yeah, colds are exactly like that.

Ghosted by Thorzul @ 11/21/2008 1:24 AM EST

I know it’s gonna seem cliche, but whenever I’m sick, I just pop in Star Wars. It fits the bill. I don’t have to focus on it at all since I know every freaking second by heart. Princess Bride is also a good standby for flu season. Clue works well, now that I think of it. It’s hilarious at times, but I have a history of falling asleep right in the middle of it only to wake up to see Tim Curry turn on a shower right in his own face.

Now if you’ll excuse me, I feel this pressing need to find the Hot Wheels three pack with that 40s roadster because it makes me think of my boyfriend.

Ghosted by Bella Donna @ 11/21/2008 2:04 AM EST

For our intents and purposes I will only name the top three things I watch when sick because when I was younger all I could watch was The Price is Right when I stayed home from you:

Justice League Unlimited – Good stories and great animation
Family Guy- Always cheers me up no matter what
House- Smart and a badass

Ghosted by WolfMan @ 11/21/2008 2:19 AM EST

I have to come in and agree, the best flu show is the New Yankee Workshop. I remember being 9 years old, so sick I could barely sit up long enough to puke, watching Norm assemble a beautiful cabinet work dresser.

Tonight, I’m going to finish off the 2006 Advent Calander. Tomorrow, i’ll plow through the 2007 one, even though I don’t need to. I still remember it very clearly.

Hmmm, flu entertainment? Well, the times I have been REALLY sick with the flu I don’t really remember what I was watching. I was too busy praying to fall asleep and trying to remind myself that if I could just survive the next 24-36 hours, I’d start feeling better.

However, I can remember plenty of times as a kid, while just a little under the weather, being dropped off at my grandmother’s while my mother worked. The entertainment for the day? The Price is Right followed by hours of soaps operas (as a boy I couldn’t stand the soaps).

So yeah… when I think “sick show” I think The Price is Right. And please remember to have your pets spayed or neutered.

Trivia Question: What is Mare’s Brother’s Name?
Trivia Question2: What is Waiterbot’s full name?

Ghosted by Tresjolie9 @ 11/21/2008 3:08 AM EST

I think anything from TVLand works for me as a “flu-flick”. Anything too loud in both color and noise can be kind of annoying when you’re sick. Some old shows on the channel have a decent neutral tone for those times. Sometimes it re-introduces me to shows I wouldn’t normally watch because I’d consider them boring but then I gain a new appreciation for them.

Ghosted by Anonymous @ 11/21/2008 3:11 AM EST

Princess Bride and Labyrinth are pretty high on my flu-ray list but the top spot has to go to Ed Wood. There is just something about Johnny Depp in drag acting that cheery that makes me happy every time I watch it.

Also I got it on DVD for Christmas a couple years ago and got sick that day. After the whole unwrapping thing I wasn’t feeling so great, by the time we got through brunch I had gone to curl up on the couch so my sister popped in the DVD for me and I just watched that all afternoon. I woke up in time to help clean up Christmas dinner and was by then feeling much better.

@Evilsquatch – I have to agree about Futurama. I watch it while on a treadmill. I’ve seen each episode enough that I don’t worry about missing any dialog over the sound of the machine and it sucks me in enough that I don’t think about the fact that I’m exercising or getting tired.

Ghosted by Graen @ 11/21/2008 3:17 AM EST

Flu movies: Probably anything they have on MST3K. Flu shows: The Price is Right, Twilight Zones I’ve seen 1000 times, and Friday the 13th: The Series.

Waiterbot’s name is Einstein T. Waiterbot. His parents named him that because they thought it would be funny.
What the T stands for, I have no idea. Thunderheart
with Val Kilmer would make a good flu movie. I like
watching Clerks.

And Mare’s brother is Mark.

Sorry about my cranky post yesterday morning. Been a teeensy bit flu-y today, enough to where I decided to spend some of my scant bucks for some herbal cough medicine. Been holding it off mostly, tho.

Now that I don’t have broadcast, satellite, or cable TV, I usually either watch my ReBoot or Red Dwarf tapes when I’m sick. Back when I was a teen and the Disney Channel had just started, I liked watching the old movies (and I think some Stooges stuff) they played in the early afternoon. The Price is Right was always my signal that soaps were imminent and it was time to find something less boring. ;)
