You are all doomed. Why not surrender? We might let you live.

11/16/2008: Sunday Newspapers.

Once you throw away the pesky black-and-white pages, Sunday newspapers are incredible things. Especially at this time of year. A stack of overdesigned, full-color circulars, thick enough to beat a dog with, covered in Christmas symbols? It’s like I died, went to heaven, got three wishes and wasted one of them to become heaven’s chief newspaper mogul on a dare from one of the other dead people. I’m about as well-read as a monkey, but I love Sunday newspapers during the holidays. They’re rife with Rudolph, stuffed with snowmen, and other pleasant matching-consonant descriptors.

While the department store catalogs have a more practical purpose, I’m much more fond of pilfering through the coupon sections. Not because I’m looking to save fifty cents on popcorn, but because these sections rent out space to a number of mail-order companies who use our collective holiday madness against us, forcing us to consider buying random ceramic Santa Clauses and other keepsakes that hide their bloated retail prices behind monthly installment payment plans.

From today’s paper, up above are my two favorite Christmas-related offerings. On the left, a series of storybooks where the lead characters are customized to be named after your child. I’ve always wondered if these books are made-to-order, or if the companies simply stockpile books with common names. I suppose I could pen “Walter The Ass” in on the “Your Child’s Name” field of the order form, write the check, and get my answer. But then I’d have to get up to find a pen. :(

On the right…Kinoki Cleansing Detox Foot Pads! Under that, an opportunity to get a personalized letter from Santa Claus. I was going to compliment their fairly reasonable price of $2.95 per letter, until I noticed that they charge an additional dollar for postage. $3.95? In this economy?! Fuck that, I’ll just write “To Matt From Santa” on a piece of paper and mail it to myself.

I don’t know. These giant, treasure-laden Sunday newspapers just seem to gel with the idealism of how holiday weekends should be spent: Lazily, under blankets and drinking something hot.

A morning spent thumbing through pages of Christmas trees and Carvel ads gave me enough inspiration to turn our usual Sunday feast of pretzel rods into a mock Thanksgiving dinner, complete with stuffing that was nearing perfection until I managed to burn 80% of it, and one of those six-dollar supermarket rotisserie chickens that packs all the charm of a turkey, but without the subtle gamy aroma that sends me into fits of wanting to kill everyone.

And yeah, that’s the holy trilogy of Christmas soda in the back. I like to have options. I’ve written about them before, but I kind of feel like I’ll jinx them if I don’t write about them every year. I don’t want Pomegranate 7 Up to ever go away. So write about them I will. But not tonight. I’m too winded from writing those six sentences about the newspaper.

If you’re impatient, a trip back in time! My reviews of… Pomegranate 7 Up, Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash and the Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash Slurpee!

Does anyone knows where to get the pom 7up in San Diego?!?!?!

I NEED it.

Happy birthday jjwspider!

Reading this post reminds me how much I’d rather be reading under a blanket than going to work tomorrow. Fix it.

We got Real snow today in Pittsburgh, and I can’t stop waking up with Christmas carols in my head. It’s really happening, isn’t it?

Ghosted by Jessica Marie @ 11/16/2008 9:23 PM EST

Yes – a post just when I needed one most! Thanks, Matt.

Jessica Marie, I totally hear you on the not wanting to go to work thing. Normally I don’t mind work, but this weekend seems to have flown by and I feel like it was just getting started. I need more time to do nothing :(

I cannot BELIEVE how fast November is going. Part of me is thrilled, because November is kind of a boring lump between one holiday season and another, and I’d like it to hurry up and be Thanksgiving already. But part of me is alarmed and worried that December will go just as fast.

I was reading through some of the X-E blog archives from November and December of previous years, and I’m glad I did because I found things in my own comments that I’d totally forgotten about. (I forgot that my grandma liked A Christmas Story!) Scary too, because a lot of this was only from a year or two ago. I’m getting forgetful in my old age.

I always have nervous tension on Sundays. Like waiting in a doctors waiting room. Don’t know why? It must be from childhood when church was a chore and homework was put off until 8:00 at night.

Great idea, Matt. It beats my chicken and veggies that is for dinner tonight. And a cup of sleepy time tea before I retire for the evening. Fuck I am getting old.

I love Sundays going into Christmas. Brisk days, football, warm food, big newspapers.

Ghosted by Jeff Mack @ 11/16/2008 9:48 PM EST

Matt-
Those books are custom made. My grandparents gave me a couple different ones as a wee’un,and they got pretty specific. Like,it also mentioned what city I lived in,one of my friend’s names, etc. Maybe they should make some for adults, like the Necronomicon or Penthouse Forum or something.

Hoverbored-
My friend code:8363 4863 4726 3818

All Wii game players-
We (Wii?) really need to work out some other message board or something for exchanging these things, like maybe a list of all x-e’ers codes. It’s inconvienient this way,not to mention to non Wii people it has to be annoying to try to read X-Mas memories interspersed with our 16 digit numbers.

I do need some warm holiday food. I haven’t left the apartment all day and could really use some pecan pie. Someone help.

Happy birthday, jjwspider!

You can always see the signs that Christmas is coming: the shopping center near my house brings out the wire presents filled with Christmas tree ornaments, the newspapers have all the ads, you see stuff like Christmas Crunch (which I’ll buy as soon as I finish my current boring Cinnamon Life), and of course, Matt decks his site with all the fuzzy and warm Christmas pictures. And the Advent Calendar shows up, but that’s for another thread.

What happened to that chicken? I thought rotisserie chickens only required minor cooking, but it looks like you stuck it on a stick and hovered it over a fire. That’s festive, but apparently excessive. =P

Ghosted by Ben @ 11/16/2008 10:11 PM EST

Whoah that dinner looks rad. Main festive foods we have going on here are homemade Christmas cookies and peppermint schnapps + hot chocolate. Good stuff!

What is that magical looking ginger ale you have in the corner of that photo?

I love Sunday papers! The only time to actually look at new hot shit! I love the doorbuster papers on Thanxgiving! Always extra fatty!

Did anyone here see Palpatine on Family Guy just now?
I knew On The Dark Side by John Rafferty would make
a good Sith AMV song. Somebody please make one.

Sorry for double posting here, John Cafferty.

Alright new post! That chicken looks temptin. I’m all cozy myself under a bunch of warm blankets, with some hot cocoa and gingerbread cookies. Happy b-day jjwspider. =)

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/16/2008 10:33 PM EST

I was visiting my parents today, and I also have to admit I was pretty exited to tear apart their Sunday fliers…
And even though I’ll have an actual Thanksgiving dinner with my family, and a leftover party with friends, I’m dying to make myself a pathetic bachelor Thanksgiving dinner with one of those supermarket chickens and some stuffing in a box, maybe even a full frozen dinner.

Ghosted by GloriousKyle @ 11/16/2008 10:38 PM EST

Sunday ads are AWESOME. I love paging through them. Even if I can’t afford any of the shit they are advertising, I have just always loved looking at them. I usually save Best Buy’s ad for last. Don’t know why, just do.

7 more workdays until Thanksgiving Holidays (not that I’m counting or anything…)

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 11/16/2008 10:39 PM EST

Cameron T. By any chance are you plannin to get Animal Crossing? It would be awesome to visit each others towns! Thanksgiving is almost here hooray!

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/16/2008 10:55 PM EST

i think maybe that’s kinda a guy thing, to go paging through the ads in the sunday paper. or maybe it’s just not a me thing.

Ghosted by Amy @ 11/16/2008 11:00 PM EST

For the first Monday in months, I won’t be at work tomorrow. So, this particular Sunday does not carry the dreadful feeling that most do. I might just head to the drugstore and buy a leftover paper to see these ads for myself.
I began decorating today, just some lights on the window and wreaths and such. However, it made today great.

Happy BD jjwspider!

Ghosted by kb @ 11/16/2008 11:05 PM EST

Hm. I made shrimp fried rice…. with brown rice. Cuz I roll like that. I did make pumpkin cheesecake pudding this weekend, though. I’m supposed to go out and have Thanksgiving dinner with the bf’s family this year, and I’m not so sure how I feel about that yet. We’re mainly doing it that way because his grandmother is very well off and there’s a slight possibility that she may, in the future, pay for our wedding. We’re tossing around the idea of a handfasting on midsummer, though.

God I’m lame.

I actually got a few of those “Insert Name Here” Christmas books when I was a wee lad. I would love to see a book titled “Walter The Ass Saves Christmas.”

Remember folks: The second Robot Chicken Star Wars special airs tonight at 11:30 EST!

Happy birthday, jjwspider! You old coot!

Still waiting on that Pomegranate 7-Up to show up around these parts. We never got it last year and I haven’t seen hide nor hair of it this year either. I’m starting to think I might not ever experience this thing. Good thing I’m up to my ears in Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash.

I agree with Ben. That chicken looks a little scorched. Tasty, but a tad scorched. Is that the stuffing in that round pan there? Looks good. I went out to a little cheap restaurant up the street earlier today and got turkey and dressing, with a side of cornbread dressing (it’s actually a totally different kind of dressing) cause I was in the mood and didn’t want to wait another week or so.

Norbert–Yep, I got the DVR set to record it in case I miss it. Looking forward to it. The first one was great.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 11/16/2008 11:37 PM EST

Ewwww, don’t talk about “handfasting”! Kids could be reading this!

Seriously,what the hell is handfasting?

Ghosted by Kid Nicky @ 11/16/2008 11:40 PM EST

Matt You should get one of those books. Use “Waiterbot” for the name!

UltramanSadly I just can’t afford Animal Crossing right now. :( Or any other game for that matter.

Ghosted by Cameron T. @ 11/16/2008 11:45 PM EST

Cameron T. I understand. There are more important things you have to spend money on when yur on a budget. But as soon as you can afford it, get it. It would be awesome to have SNT in each others towns. =D

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/17/2008 12:05 AM EST

Thanks everyone for the Happy Birthday wishes.

I too am looking for the Pomegranate 7-Up to show up in my area. I seem to recall looking for it last year and never finding it. I’m also going to have to track down the Christmas Galactic Heroes Matt mentioned in his last article.

Bring back Pepsi Holiday Spice, you Scrooges!

Ghosted by jzimbert @ 11/17/2008 12:08 AM EST

Happy Birthday jjwspider!

I can’t find Pomegranate 7-Up here but I did find a whole mess of Chocodiles. Apparently they are hard to come by in many states.

Ghosted by Bill @ 11/17/2008 12:25 AM EST

Definitely feeling the Christmas Spirit today. Started putting up lights outside when a mini blizzard came through and covered everything in a nice layer of snow.

Went inside and the wife and I started putting up a few decorations, cracked a couple cans of Cranberry Splash (with a little vodka added) and watched Rudolf.

Now I got the X-E-X-Mas juke going and feeling good.

Ghosted by MulanLang @ 11/17/2008 12:36 AM EST

BILLY! The only place I have ever found those things was in Idaho. I took a picture and re-visited the place the next year, and sure enough, they were gone :( I am not even in love with them, but it’s like finding a four leaf clover or something when you see those.

Ghosted by kb @ 11/17/2008 12:43 AM EST

OMG,Jjwspider,do NOT purchase the Galactic Heroes! Once you purchase a pack, you get another, then another. There’s no stopping it. I have allmost all the Transformer ones,a couple G.I. Joe ones,6 or so superheroes, and I honestly don’t know how many Star Wars guys. I can’t even remember, and I can’t find them all to confirm who I have. Is this the kind of life you want to lead? It’s too late for me,but you can still save yourself.

It’s not even over yet, but the second Robot Chicken Star Wars Special is MUCH better than the first one!

kb: I’ll mail you a few boxes. ;)

Norb: That was hilarious.

Ghosted by Bill @ 11/17/2008 12:55 AM EST

That dinner looks good. The stuffing doesn’t look burnt to me. I’ll pass on the chicken, though. I’ve sold a few too many at the grocery store where I work that have dripped out of the flimsy containers and onto my hand or pants or shoes. It doesn’t smell as good on clothes at it does on a chicken.

I was wondering when you’d get to mentioning the Christmas drinks. I’ve seen all three of those at work since before Halloween. Still haven’t tried the Pomegrante 7-Up, but I did notice it comes in diet now. Maybe I’ll break down and grab one before the holidays are over.

Someone always leaves copies of The Philadelphia Inquirer and the Courier Post in the break room at work. I love reading the inserts…and I actually get coupons from the inserts laying around, too. (But shh! Don’t tell the people who bought them that! ;) )

Ghosted by starwenn @ 11/17/2008 1:19 AM EST

MulanLang: I was feeling the spirit today, too. Ended up downloading the Christmas episode of “The Adventures of Pete and Pete” and watched the hell out of it. A brilliant show like that deserves an excellent Christmas episode.

Dammit, why won’t Thanksgiving get here?!? Cap’n needs his annual holiday special overload!

And by the way, I’ve mentioned it before, but ABC Family is bringing in new specials (some of them classic) to their usual Rankin/Bass oriented marathon this year. There’s gonna be Garfield, Winnie the Pooh, and more! All X-Ers need to keep an eye on the listings!

Ghosted by Captain Will @ 11/17/2008 1:28 AM EST

Yeah, I never found Pom 7Up last year, so I’m hoping it’s around this time….
I start working a holiday show tomorrow (Peter Pan), so it definitely feels like Christmas. And a week off of work this year for Thanksgiving aint to shabby either!

Ghosted by Shuanfu @ 11/17/2008 1:36 AM EST

Not sure if anyone noticed but the animated version of How the Grinch Stole Cristmas was on today for some damned reason.

Wednesdays and Fridays are the days here were our newspapers are full of awesome flyers. But Saturdays is when we get those coupon clipper bookets. I like to play a game before opening them, and try to guess if the featured ceramic offering will be a ceramic baby doll, wolves painted on a collectible plate, or an angel.

I think there’s a computer program they use that inserts your kid’s name and various facts about them into the book. They were sleling them at a booth at a craft fair last weekend. It seems kind of lame, but think from a kid’s point of view how cool it’d be to think someone had specifically written a book all about you.
When I was little, my grandparents gave my mom a little flimsy plastic birthday record as a joke gift. I think they were sold on racks as premade alphabetically organized records, like when you buy personalized pens. We thought it was hilarious, because it was some story about a spaceman singing something like, “Hey Barbara, it’s your birthday!”
The computerized system of having a kid’s name inserted is a lot better, because nowadays there are so many different names and people spell them all differently, so it must be hard for the personalized pen people to keep up.

Oh, thanks for the reminder about the 2nd Robot Chicken Star Wars special, Inavder Norbert. I saw Seth Green talking about it on Conan the other night. As far as I know we don’t get the show here in Canada, but I’m sure I can find a download to tide me over until the DVD release, which probably won’t be for a year.

Ghosted by CMJ @ 11/17/2008 1:56 AM EST

Misty: Congrats!! We were handfasted on Beltane last year, so if you want someone to gab handfasting with, hit me up on Myspace! :)

Today I found myself drooling over a Home Depot commercial featuring Christmas decorations. I turned to the fiance and said “Let’s decorate tonight!” He shook his head and I think I saw a tear form him his eye. I’ve been banned from opening the Christmas box until next weekend, but I may sneak out the Playmobil Nativity tomorrow…
