11/15/2008: Star Wars Galactic Heroes Stocking Stuffers!

I have but one goal: To keep posting entries until all of the Halloween-related articles are pushed off the blog’s main page. I’m all for dichotomy because it’s just such a fun word to type, but I cannot resonate Christmas decorations up north and Candy Corn Corn Pops down south. This has to change, so I will try to post once a day until the blog looks like a Macy’s window. Then, I will retire.

If you haven’t noticed, the holiday season is here. No, it really is. November and December have merged into a festive, singular entity, largely on account of fashionably early retailers and the fact that scratch-off games are already being sold under such banners as “Father Christmas Fortunes” and “Reindeer Win Money.” I don’t completely understand “Reindeer Win Money,” but I’ve never been much use in spotting puns.

It’s been extremely busy at work this month, so I haven’t had a chance to really feel the season just yet. I’m not complaining: This has kept me from blowing my wad early by pretending that Santa visits on November 25th. The good news is, I’ve almost completely cleared my schedule for the entire month of December, which will leave plenty of time for Advent Calendars, tributes to nut-crusted holiday cheese balls, and of course, scribblings about all of the wacky shit I pick up from department stores on Friday nights. It’s how all hot-blooded males spend their weekends. Here’s the first of many finds:

Okay, one thing: This isn’t what I want the site’s holiday coverage to be about. Not exclusively. I may need all the help I can get to survive Halloween for two months, but Christmas? I can think of plenty more to say than, “I went to the store and this is what I found.” Christmas deserves more than that. I’m going to be totally hypocritical and write about my store pillages a thousand times between now and New Year’s, but if you catch me doing nothing but that, please e-mail me and tell me to stop. Use “no more being a cocksucker” as the subject header.

Regardless, there’s no way to avoid covering a bunch of Star Wars figures in Santa caps. From Hasbro’s Galactic Heroes series (which I’ve championed many times), it’s the Galactic Heroes Stocking Stuffers collection! Four four-packs of kiddified Star Wars figures, dressed for the holidays!

Vertically-inclined plastic tube packages are a real nightmare to take good pictures of, but these look great in person, seamlessly blending a Death Star motif with tree ornament icons. As Star Wars toys have grown so numerous and broad in scope that there’s no real way to argue what is and isn’t true to the brand, I take no issue with a two-inch Yoda who wields a giant candy cane lightsaber. If you land someplace awesome, it doesn’t matter if you jump the shark.

With characters from both the original and prequel trilogies, you’re privy to everyone from Santa Vader to Wreathy Han to Candy Cane Anakin. Smartly, Hasbro has configured things so that each of the four-packs includes at least one figure that no Star Wars fan can live without. I wasn’t gunning to purchase all of the sets, but since this was the only way to get the Boba Fett with the lights stranded around his blaster and the Chewbacca holding the miniature Christmas tree, I ran short on choice.

I wish that a capable, trustworthy research company would conduct a national poll as to whether people still use Christmas stockings for more than simple decorative purposes. Are people still finding little presents in them on Christmas morning? It drives me crazy to think that some people aren’t. Stocking stuffers aren’t intended to be the “big” gifts, but the thought of finding cool shit tucked inside wall-tacked socks is one of the many surreal glories that people tend to take for granted during the holidays. Hasbro went through a world of trouble to create toy packaging that would look soooo perfect protruding ever so slightly beyond the white trim of a Christmas stocking, and it’d be a real shame to waste that. Wasting that should be penable by imprisonment.

As for the figures, you might be concerned that Star Wars characters dressed in wreaths and gift boxes have a limited appeal. Like sex with a regrettable partner, once Christmas is over, you really don’t want to look at it anymore. No fear, my friends…

All of the figures’ holiday touches are totally removable! They’re mere accessories! Not only did this help Hasbro avoid the cost of creating entirely new figure molds, but it’s also given us carte blanche to make the toys serve as perennial cubicle adornments. The candy cane lightsabers, for example, are revealed as mere candy cane lightsaber sheaths. I’d say that there’s far more play value involved with candy cane lightsaber sheaths than the idea of Luke and Vader trying to cut each other’s hands off with giant candy canes. But if you ask me in an hour, I might take that back.

For my first red-and-green purchase of the 2008 season, I could’ve done a lot worse. Thank god the cashier at Target rang up the Hickory Farms Summer Sausage last.

There is so, so, so much more to come during X-E’s ‘08 Christmas season. Turkey fans will be pleased to know that there will be some Thanksgiving-related chicanery going on as well. Going to spend the weekend eating grapes and doing the full design conversion, so enjoy your SNT.

It DID air on TV…..

Saw the new Star Trek trailer via Youtube…looks…interesting…and pretty damn violent. Star Trek has never really been about huge space battles but it looks like this has a lot of it…I’ll reserve judgement until I see it….

RE: Christmas Stockings: I’ve always had one. In fact, I can’t NOT have one. It would just be wrong. It’s always filled with little inexpensive stuff, but still cool stuff. Like Daily calendars. And maybe a cheap DVD..Never any oranges, though…we just didn’t do that….

As it gets closer to Christmas maybe I’ll post a picture of my Stocking..Got to get over Thanksgiving first!

We had a Thanksgiving tailgate at the Baylor game yesterday. Fried Turkey, Stuffing, Green Beans, Mashed potatoes, Cheese and broccoli casserole, bacon-wrapped Green Beans, stuffing, rolls, and pumpkin pie. DAMN it was good!

Hoverbored-
I can’t go get my friend code right now,but yes,I’ll trade Wii Music videos with you. Maybe now I’ll actually get a little more use out of the game.

I actually do recommend the Pear Tree Soda. The big problem is that if you’ve ever eaten a real pear, it doesn’t really have a distinctive flavor. That’s why you rarely see them used as a flavoring in other foods.

It’s sorta how I like bananas, but don’t like banana-flavored things.

JLAJRC: Same here with regard to bananas. I love the fruit, but things like banana-flavored candy gross me out.

I’m like that with strawberries and grapes. Love the fruits, but artificial strawberry and grape flavors just don’t sit well with me for some reason. I’m fine with banana candy, though.

Right now my house is ice cold, and I love it! I’ll probably love it less after a couple days with no heater, but after last week’s warm snap I’m downright excited to be freezing. I feel Christmassy enough that I decided to change my blog and desktop over to Christmas themes. The desktop one is an awesome Thomas Kinkade painting of an old-timey city square with snow-covered streets. I’ve been using it for four or five years now, and I never get tired of it. I was going to wait a couple more weeks to make the switch, but I was tired of looking at pumpkins and couldn’t find a good Thanksgiving theme. Bah. I’d totally decorate for Thanksgiving if there were good decorations besides cornucopias.

Banana Daiquiris. Surprisingly good when made right.
Banana runts. The candy you throw it the movie theater.

What DO you get a Wookie for Christmas, when he already owns a comb?

Ghosted by Invader Norbert @ 11/16/2008 2:07 PM EST

hooray christmas!! and yes stockings still hold tiny gifts on christmas morning- at least they do at our house!

Ghosted by cb @ 11/16/2008 2:14 PM EST

banana runts are good, i always chuck the lime ones. lemon and lime candies are a waste of perfectly good sugar.

For the older recipients, have you seen the Star Wars USB drives? Not cheap…. but adorable for stocking stuffers, and ultimately useful.

Another harness to hold all his sandwiches?

I saw those USB drives at Comic-Con too, they’re awesome. I just uploaded a picture…I was trying to be really frugal and they are a bit pricey so I went for the cheaper alternative in the form of a Star Wars Stack-Ems keychain. Might end up ordering one of the drives anyway, they’re just too nifty.

Just got the word confirming next weekend as the big Thanksgiving family time. Which is lame because I now have to spend the rest of the day cleaning, but leaves me free the day of, which might be nice. Cameron T, your mention of bacon-wrapped green beans has given me some inspiration for my green bean casserole assignment. Just searched the site for Matt’s stuffed mushroom recipe (which I’ve always wanted to try) and see that it calls for prosciutto, which means I have an excuse to go to the deli and get pancetta too. Time to make a shopping list :)

Holy crap, I just looked at the calendar and realized that Thanksgiving is next week. Hot damn! Macey’s Day Parade, turkey, and dressing for DJ D!

Last year my family tried something new and cooked up a fried turkey. I had never had that before and it turned out really well. I was really impressed by it. I do prefer the traditional baked one, but I kind of hope they do it again this year.

Too bad I’ll be out of town though, and away from an internet connection cause it would be fun to watch the parade with you guys.

I didn’t find the TMNT Christmas special Matt. Palmerholic, the reason why Luke Skywalker
looked so scary is that the special was
made a short time after the car accident that
almost killed Mark Hamill. He still had some
visible scars, so they applied alot of makeup
on him. He was brave to come out though. I’ve
only seen clips of the special myself, and
they were just of Harrison Ford.

I just tried the Mele Kalikimaka Jones Soda. It’s basically coconut and pineapple soda and it is shockingly very good. You’re talking to someone who at best tolerates coconut (and even then in VERY small doses). I actually would drink this on a regular basis.

Still, the best flavor is still the Candy Cane Soda. That is pure heaven.

Anyway, just got back from “Quantom of Solace” and really liked it. Daniel Craig is really kicking butt as James Bond. I always viewed Bond as just fun popcorn movies, nothing more (my dad is the real Bond fan). But Craig certainly changed my opinion on that fast. The only bad things I think is that the Bond women and villains are kinda forgettable. In fact, I couldn’t tell you the name of the Bond girl in “QOS” without looking it up, and I just got back from it an hour ago.

Jazzy: Yes — I’d heard that Sirius’ music stations were not as good as XM’s, so I was pretty unhappy when after the big “merge,” all my stations are magically renamed the Sirius names. :(

RE: Jones Soda. I knew it as a “traditional” soda (albeit with some untraditional flavors) well before the holiday stuff started coming out, but you could only get in certain places. The flavors used to have better depth, too, with weird stuff like “Happy” and “Pink” (and yes, they were sodas) Oh, and “Blue Bubble Gum,” although I think you can still get that some places. It seems like they went more mainstream in their soda offerings, but added the weird Holiday packs? Eh. I miss the old Jones.

Oops — sorry about the bad formatting (and the double post) … where’d I go wrong there?

Haven’t had the Xmas Jones, but I really really liked Lemon Drop Dead from the Halloween flavors.

DJD: Iv’e heard of people frying their turkeys. I think i’ll try that this year. Sounds tasty. =)

just to clear everything up,that monkey in the wall story ,i told you guys about last month was true, and i live in canada.i know wierd.also i just saw achristmas story lately and its my favourite x mas movie ever

Ghosted by kyle @ 11/16/2008 6:28 PM EST

ULTRAMAN–It was super yummy, much more so than I thought it would be. I recommend it. The only thing is, it takes a while. It was done in a huge deep fryer, and they kept having to put it back in over and over again (stop it, Guise) last year because it wasn’t cooking all the way through. Once we got it done though, it was great.

Aww, they’re just so damn cuuute! I want a Santa Vader… and C3PO Looks very huggable with his overlarge feet. The Candy Cane Sabers are a very nice touch. Whoever thought of that wasn’t paid enough. I want to stage a sword fight with giant candy canes. I smell a new show on Fox… ‘Celebrity CaneSmack, Holiday Edition!’

Is anyone else dreading Christmas? I certainly am. I’m broke this year and I usually make my own gifts for everyone. I may be disappointing this year and do very cheap gift cards. How depressing that I’m going to be responsible and not overspend. However, an Advent Calendar will certainly help cheer me up. Especially if I can swing a new phone from Santa! ^_^ I’ve been good, damn it!!!

Hope everyone stays out of the red this holiday! That goes double for me… It’s hard not to buy every toy for every kid I’ve met this year so I can play with what I bought them. I’d love to check out the Indiana Jones Lego Sets… I love that my 10 year old cousin is a huge Lego fan… ;)

Advent calendar?
I am literally shaking with excitement, or maybe I’m cold.
One never knows.

Ghosted by JoshC @ 11/16/2008 8:40 PM EST

wow, Josh, i read that as shrinking, not shaking, twice before i got it right. though that would work too, i guess.

the hawaiian jones soda sounds awesome. someone’s gonna have to drive me to target soon.

Ghosted by Amy @ 11/16/2008 10:58 PM EST

Am I seeing this right? Is JoshC actually alive? And posting? Maybe I’m putting too much ice in my soda. I better go lie down. I don’t think I’m feeling well.

“I take no issue with a two-inch Yoda who wields a giant candy cane lightsaber. If you land someplace awesome, it doesn’t matter if you jump the shark.”

George Lucas doesn’t need any encouragement to release a remake of the Star Wars Christmas Special (Now in THX HD with additional never before seen footage!)

Those Galactic Heroes look awesome.

My wife and I do stockings for each other and my parents do one each for us. I noticed a difference, though. I’m from Georgia and my stockings always consisted of small gifts, candy, gum, etc. My wife is from Pennsylvania and she’s used to toothbrushes, razors, deodorant, etc. Yankees are weird. ;)

It’s still too early for Christmas…my birthday’s coming up…focus, people!

Still love the remake of Year W/O A Santa Clause from last year.

Harvey will always be Heatmiser to me :)

Ghosted by Neg @ 11/17/2008 4:31 AM EST

I still hang up and fill stockings each year. Just one of those things I can’t let die alongside the other traditions I find myself failing at more every year. The wife tries, but it’s seen more of a burden on her end. Maybe I’ll actually try to do an advent calender this year to make up for it.

Ghosted by Dann @ 11/17/2008 10:37 AM EST

Kinda late to this thread but OH MY GOD I want these Galactic Heroes so freaking bad. But I can’t really spend any more money. Ugh.

SHEER AWESOME! My holiday is now complete….

Ghosted by Mike83 @ 11/27/2008 12:41 PM EST

AUGH!! Now I have to go buy those things for my boys (both big and little)! I had no idea the candy canes/wreaths detached – I didn’t like the idea of them permanently being holiday toys. Thanks a lot! :-P Re. stockings, my brothers and I grew up with fun-filled stockings that my mother hand-knit. I made sure that my husband understood the importance of the stocking and we have continued the tradition with our son (and each other). I made cross-stitch stocking for them. Opening the stocking items is my favorite part of Christmas morning. We spend way more money than we should, but it is guaranteed fun. :-)
