I believe that the middle picture is some kind of giant monster. My reasoning, the green things on either side look like the tops of palm trees, if you look closely you can make out the shapes of each (needle? prong?).

Hmmm… it seems that I’m a little too late to get in on today’s interestingness, but now that I have a reason to post here again, I’ll be back in full force tomorrow to help puzzle out the next… erm… puzzle.

You know it’s officially the holiday season when the disquieting, nightmare-inducing madness begins.

Ghosted by Monte @ 11/16/2008 4:01 AM EST

And unfortunately I’m not good at morse code, or decoding pictures.

Ghosted by Tresjolie9 @ 11/16/2008 4:15 AM EST

Sorry for the double (triple) post. My computer is acting up.

Ghosted by Jack @ 11/16/2008 5:08 AM EST

Thanks to JaM I think I know what the thing in the middle is.

Their suggestion of a fly crawling over something, try instead a termite, those two ‘eyes’ are the backs of termites. The grey thing is the nest.

The thing that conquered…was termites?! Oh man…you are kidding me.

Ghosted by Guise @ 11/16/2008 6:38 AM EST

Sorry to have missed last night. So to catch up, we’ve all copied the posted pic above and stretched and skewed it until sections are legible, right?

let me have a crack – see what I find.

Ghosted by Fungusmungus @ 11/16/2008 8:42 AM EST

The middle strip has me thinking Mothra or some Japanese monster. I’ll dig an see if I can find the image.

Ghosted by Fungusmungus @ 11/16/2008 9:11 AM EST

It really is the most wonderful time of the year.

Ghosted by M.Fireball @ 11/16/2008 9:39 AM EST

Didn’t find the pic, but I did find this super cool quiz to see which Japanese Monster you are:

http://quizfarm.com/quizzes/Movies/ManOfCheese/which-godzilla-movie-monster-are-you/index.php

… and really, that’s almost as good.

Ghosted by Fungusmungus @ 11/16/2008 10:28 AM EST

Okay, so forgive me if I’m stating the obvious here, but from the clues I’ve seen it looks like the crew has had to evacuate the mansion, possibly due to some sort of infestation?

Ghosted by lightningkick @ 11/16/2008 11:35 AM EST

Guise-my photoshop verifies you are correct! you need to do a little flipping and stretching but yes, that is the source pic.

DJ_D-I assumed Matt does not have a stock photography subscription so I did a google search for “circus” and it’s the 7th image. Heh, remember, I get PAID to sit here and photoshop all day :-)

Ghosted by Ann @ 11/16/2008 11:41 AM EST

Maybe there was a pube infestation.

Ghosted by Mystie @ 11/16/2008 11:46 AM EST

Thanks Ann.

The middle one has me wondering, I’ve image searched for some time trying all different ideas and scenarios – going from sea monsters and giant monsters to what I’m pretty sure now is three termites (one facing upwards, two away – we see their carapaces looking like eyes) on a grey nest with trees in background.

Ghosted by Guise @ 11/16/2008 12:02 PM EST

Wow This is a crazy blog… 3 scrunched photos and a morse code wav. file. hahahahaha

It would be funny to loop that shit and make a crazy beat with it. =)

X-Entertainment is the shit!!!

Although I tried to have the last farewell on the old Box 23 thread, our friend “meepy” takes the prize:

Cryptic as ever…

Ghosted by Fungusmungus @ 11/16/2008 3:26 PM EST

Ann–I should have figured it was something as simple. Until recently I had a similar type of job. I spent most of my free time using photoshop to work on personal projects…when I wasn’t here of course.

Guise–I thought about that. I agree that the two lumps on the sides are some kind of leaves or possibly the tops of grassy hills, if they’re not actually 2 other creatures. I did some searches myself but haven’t come up with anything yet.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 11/16/2008 3:31 PM EST

Deej, how about…they’ve all been breathing in way too much fumigation smoke (fire pic) whilst termites (middle pic) are being taken care of in a tented house (circus pic). XD

Ghosted by Guise @ 11/16/2008 3:43 PM EST

I’ve been reading the comments and speculations on this years calendar and I think I know the solution. Here’s what I came up with:
Whatever happens this year, it’s going to be even more screwed up than previous years.

Ghosted by PlantMonster @ 11/16/2008 4:06 PM EST

I don’t know if this has been discussed yet or not but, the name of the box 23 jpg is “arcano”.

Ghosted by seign @ 11/16/2008 4:43 PM EST

Boy do I wish I had learned Morse code.

Glad to see so many familiar faces! (So to speak) And welcome to the new ones!

Hey Guise, is your site still up?

Ghosted by Ben @ 11/16/2008 6:52 PM EST

Hey Ben, good to see you!

Yup, site is still up. Need to do a slight update to add in a bit more, but the current year is here: http://www.rogues.1me.net/XEAdventurers/Box23_2008.htm

Ghosted by Guise @ 11/16/2008 7:09 PM EST

seign–Yeah, we discussed that quite a bit on the old thread. Several people instantly started looking at a website called Arcano.com. We thought for a while that would be part of the conspiracy, after looking at the history of the site–when/where it was first put up (1997, I believe)–we concluded that the site itself is pretty much a dead end and most likely has nothing to do with anything. So far we don’t know the meaning behind “arcano” other than it signifies something hidden or mysterious. Time will tell.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 11/16/2008 7:25 PM EST

The second picture reminds me of a screen-shot from a video game. I’m thinking either Daxter or Mario 64 for some reason.

To me, it looks like 2 bees crawling on a hive. I’ll keep google-ing and see what I can find.

Ghosted by Alecks @ 11/16/2008 8:02 PM EST

This is the only part of Box 23/Advent I dislike, the time difference between US and UK that means that I might sleep now and miss an update. Heh.

Alecks, yeah, I’m of the same mind but thinking termites. The yellow-orange blobs on the side being their backs, while the dark brown-grey in the centre of the big grey area is the actual head of one moving upwards.

Ghosted by Guise @ 11/16/2008 8:26 PM EST

Alecks, it looks like starfox or TMNT maybe to my eyes.

Ghosted by Bob @ 11/16/2008 9:05 PM EST

That middle one looks like a picture of an insect taken with an electron microscope. I can’t imagine what kind it is, but that’s my only guess. =P

Ghosted by Ben @ 11/16/2008 10:13 PM EST

Is this the middle pic? It looks like it to me.

Sorry for the DP. Previous post is the middle pic. I really hate my computer.

Ghosted by Jack @ 11/16/2008 11:58 PM EST

Jack–By God, I think that’s it! Good work!

Ghosted by DJ D @ 11/17/2008 12:03 AM EST

I reduced the vertical to 40% and the horizontal to 80% and it matches perfectly. It fits with the clues from the Summer Mega Party too.

So we have fire, a coconut crab, and clowns.

Ghosted by Jack @ 11/17/2008 12:29 AM EST

Jack, outstanding, simply outstanding!

Ghosted by Guise @ 11/17/2008 12:35 AM EST

Alright, all of the pics have been discovered, and the sound has been deciphered! But how do they connect?

Ghosted by Hazard @ 11/17/2008 2:03 AM EST

Fire–Some of the characters ended up Hell last time around. Also, if one were deserted on an island, fire would be essential.

Coconut crab–Fits in with the island theme, as this year will obviously have something to do with oceans, pirates, and sea monsters

Circus clowns–HU has already shown us via video that the circus will somehow be involved. We also have the clue “barnum”

Seriously!!

Ghosted by Guise @ 11/17/2008 2:36 AM EST

Ok, clicking on Box 23 links to that page, its a directory on the old DinosaurDracula site. Contains four images.

Untitled-1 appears self-explanatory, screw conservation of giant crabs.
Untitled-2 is the mansion these days?
Untitled-3 is BBC news report, perhaps meteor shard ala Smallville and the meta-humans?
Untitled-4 is that Doctor?

Ghosted by Guise @ 11/17/2008 2:40 AM EST

It’s obvious that Untitled-3 is only telling us that Hssxxlllo uses Firefox.

But really, look at the other tabs that are opened. Besides the BBC one, there’s “i c u,” “YouTube – Tuamotus Coconut Crab,” “Missing People | Home,” and “Hot Pack, Self Heating Meals from Canl…”

Here’s the YouTube link to that coconut crab thing: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=RLl1ccwLY1E

And the Self Heating Meals: http://www.hotpackmeals.co.uk/

Just looking at those tabs, it seems like somebody is missing and possibly camping, or on the run, or even hiding.

Ghosted by Ben @ 11/17/2008 3:25 AM EST

Probably stating the obvious, but the “i c u” tab is dinosaurdracula.com.

Ghosted by Jason @ 11/17/2008 4:17 AM EST

Also “understanding hell” is in the google search bar. I just tried searching it myself and nothing really caught my eye. Then again, I am not very good at these things…:S

Ghosted by Jason @ 11/17/2008 4:23 AM EST

Was looking atthe untitled 4 pic:
http://dinosaurdracula.com/batribII/Untitled-4.jpg

And then went back to the classic i c u page:
http://dinosaurdracula.com/
At the bottom is the picture of all the characters listening to Santa. Right behind Mista Snowman is the lego character doctor..

Isn’t untitled-4 a sliver of the same character?

Ghosted by divechaz @ 11/17/2008 5:03 AM EST

Guise ..sorry!

Just saw that you already pointed that out. Sorry for the DP.

Ghosted by divechaz @ 11/17/2008 5:04 AM EST

Nice. Daily clues already?? You guys pretty much have it all worked out. Not much I can add at this point.

Great work, everybody!!

Ghosted by Fungusmungus @ 11/17/2008 5:46 AM EST

Ok, this is weird…

Looking back to the link for tastefulholler picture here:
http://www.x-entertainment.com/updates/pics/mega5/

I removed mega5 and the webpage for the following:
http://www.x-entertainment.com/updates/pics/
Is a mixed splash page for Dec 5th 2007 advent calendar and the Christmassy version of X-entertainment. ANything special on Dec 5th last year?

I do kinda feel I’m reaching here…maybe just a red herring?

Ghosted by divechaz @ 11/17/2008 9:08 AM EST

Untitled II, looks like the inside of the mansion, although I don’t think the mansion has round windows like that. It does look like the inside of something that has been destroyed.

Perhaps a look at all the potential dwellings on playmobil.com, might be wise.

Agree that Untitled III, looks like “Dr. Lego.”

Ghosted by Tresjolie9 @ 11/17/2008 11:20 AM EST

If HU is missing Hare and trying to bring her back from hell so help me God I will kick his furry little butt. *sigh*

This is my last week at my old job, so much for getting any work done, huh?

Ghosted by Ann @ 11/17/2008 11:38 AM EST

Tres, I think it’s more a ‘dramatic reconstruction’ of the site, seeing as the destruction of a Playmobil mansion wouldn’t have the same effect in seeing a blurred, darkened photo of a real destroyed place.

The windows got me a bit though, as not only did they look porthole-y, but also that the one in the middle seems to be ever so sligly uneven and split.

I’m leaning towards a ’suspension of disbelief’ that we are seeing the mansion as it exists to them, not what we see in the calendar, if that makes sense?

Ghosted by Guise @ 11/17/2008 11:45 AM EST

Oh, and missing person…maybe Mista Snowman has finally realised that his wife is nowhere to be seen?
