10/31/2008: Halloween Countdown ‘08: Candy Corn Corn Pops!

I’m used to hating on Halloween by this point, but today is pretty great. The leaves are dead and colorful, and there’s a familiar brisky crispness to the air that always feels exclusive to October 31st. Plus, for the first time in years, the streets around here are covered in trick-or-treaters, using their Joker and pirate getups to guarantee them a serious case of 24-hour diabetes.

I can’t tell if I’m more like Uatu or D.B. Jefferies, but if there’s ever a day when it’s fun to just sit back and watch the world go round, Halloween is it.

Whatever you’re doing tonight, have fun doing it. I hope you’ve enjoyed this year’s Halloween Countdown. I know it was a bit (or a lot) scaled down in comparison to past years, but hey, at least I finished it this time. Which reminds me: here’s the last review of the spooky season!

One of the interesting things about Kellogg’s Candy Corn Corn Pops (and there are plenty of interesting things about it) is that it was produced and sold in 2001. I always get weirded out when I come across treasures that debuted after X-E was active. Granted, I basically only wrote about Transformers and He-Man in the site’s early days, but it’s strange to see something so perfectly X-Eish and know that I could’ve written about it when it was, you know, still available. But perhaps this is more interesting to me than it is to you.

Candy Corn Corn Pops really should’ve been called Candy Corn Pops, and I’ll believe that to my dying day. The cereal was a limited edition, as all Halloween cereals are, but for whatever reason, it never managed to return for additional October stints.

Part of me understands why. Candy corn is generally accepted as vile, and few people would roll the dice on a cereal flavored like it. Still, a larger part of me — let’s say my torso and left leg — is truly upset over the brand’s short stay, as Candy Corn Corn Pops features some of the best box art ever to grace the breakfast aisle. LOOK at that guy. LOOK at him! Look at him, and look at the neat way they faded the lower green background into the upper yellow background. Any reason to link back to my lymon tribute is fucking awesome.

Even in the oddball-heavy sea of cereal mascots, a mad scientist with green skin and Norfin troll hair truly stands out. The front of the box looks more like pop art than product packaging, and if I had any soul at all, I’d trim away the side and back panels, frame the front, and hang the thing in a place where everyone on the planet can see it.

The cereal is seven-years-old, which is practically fresh when compared to most of the other old foods I find and review. I didn’t want to waste the opportunity, so yes, I tried it. It really doesn’t taste like candy corn at all.

I have no way to prove this, but the smell and flavor is somehow reminiscent of C-3P0’s Cereal. There’s an overwhelming marshmallow odor, but it tastes more like watered down Corn Pops than anything else. Maybe this is to be expected from seven-year-old cereal, but something’s not quite right.

Whatever the actuality might be, the intention was a mix of regular Corn Pops and crazy, orange, candy corn-flavored Corn Pops. I wouldn’t call this a flavor concept straight out of my wildest dreams, but admittedly, it looks pretty good in a bowl.

Cereal boxbacks are beyond important. I’ve said this before. Breakfast is better with complimentary reading material, and it’s even more important with holiday edition cereals. Whether it’s Christmas Crunch or Candy Corn Corn Pops, here’s the blunt truth: Nobody picks a holiday edition cereal for its flavor. Even if you like the taste, you’re really getting it because you want to inject a little seasonal joy into your morning meal. A holiday edition cereal that comes in a box dressed with holiday-themed riddles, puzzles and sight gags is pretty much mandatory.

Candy Corn Corn Pops packed a decent share of hot Halloween action on its boxback. The ghoulish word search puzzle was cool, but the list of wacky party tips above it was even better. Here are two of my favorite tips, verbatim:

Have a Candy Corn Corn Pops eating contest. They make a great snack, see who can eat the most pops in 60 seconds.

Use Candy Corn Corn Pops in a lottery game. Put one yellow cereal piece for each player into a paper bag. Now take one out and put in one orange Candy Corn Corn Pops. Each players takes a turn picking (without looking in the bag), the player who picks the orange cereal piece wins.

Okay, so the first one is just hilarious from a visual standpoint, but the second one reads like a journal entry from a seventeen-year-old documenting their first acid trip in realtime.

For those keeping score, this box of Candy Corn Corn Pops expired on July 29th, 2002.

Halloween is here, and soon, it’ll be over. You know how it goes. All the decorations you love today, you’ll probably hate tomorrow. Enjoy it while it lasts, but don’t be too sad. Even better things are yet to come.

I could definately go for some snow! And ice too . =)

You guys!  My local target has a “grow your own Christmas tree” set in their bargain section!  You get a pot, or bucket, soil, and six fir seeds.  It seemed like it’d be right up any X-Er’s alley.  Which is why I got one.  The seeds are planted… and now we wait for my glorious fleet of Christmas trees to spring forth and conquer all other trees with piratey, christmasy goodness!

Signs of Christmas are appearing. A while ago, I heard Deck The halls from my grandfather’s tv. And then I heard those creepy Christmas
Garmin commercials. The person up above was right. They are
pushing the Holidays on us much earlier. My advice, if ou’re
going to string up Christmas lights, use LED bulbs. It won’t be long
before they start promoting those Christmas albums with celebrities
singing Christmas songs. And they only just removed the Halloween
decorations from outside the house.

Amy- If I could take the snow away, I could. It actually snowed down here back in Christmas Eve of 2004. It was the first time in years  that South Texas had seen snow. I had fun.

My local stupidmarket did not carry Christmas Tree Cakes.  But they did have Holiday Snowflake Cakes.  Same thing.  I got some.

Here’s a tip.  Never read the nutritional information on those things.

I had one snowflake cake, and it was blissful, like eating a twinkie with a light coating of soap.  Regular sprinkles, not the glassy hard ones.  I have had my fix.  Praise X-Entertainment.com

Hey, thanks Goob, appreciate the comment way earlier. Hmm. I will seek out and eat these “Christmas Tree Cakes”. Who makes em?

Ultraman – I’ve seen Christmas Crunch around here (Northern New Jersey).I saw it 2-3 weeks BEFORE Halloween!! (don’t get me started :) )

DJ D – Lego Batman and all the other Lego games are alot of fun, I’m sure you will like it…now if only you could use the whip and a lightsaber as Batman, that could very well make it the greatest game ever.

Though I was sorely tempted by special-ish and retro-ish Peppermint Creme Oreos at the grocery the other day, the only Christmassy purchase I gave in on was Cranberry Ginger Ale. Me and the husband will kill off a ton of this stuff between now and Christmas! It’s rough this year because last year after a tough day at work, we would go and wander around the Wal-Mart xmas stuff together for fun, but this year’s he’s back at school and we don’t see each other much, and I feel weird doing it alone, so I haven’t…..

It’s gonna be a strange season, but I’m sure I’ll get in the spirit soon!

Cranberry Ginger Ale. Hmm…that could work.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 11/07/2008 3:10 AM EST

It’s kind of like the weird bastard child of pink 7up and ginger ale. Except the pink 7-ups genes were dominant.

I swear this made sense when I typed it.

I recently made a gingerbread cake from a mix and put frosting on top. It was very good.

I did see the various eggnogs already in stores, but I haven’t bought any yet.

Starscream77, you are VERY lucky that you got to see TSO! I have to listen to them every christmas, or it just doesn’t feel right. Everybody who wants the cold and snow can come and take it from MI. This whole week was pretty warm and today is supposed to be pretty nice; about the 60’s and kinds cloudy. But the rest of the weekend is supposed to be cold and that rain/snow mix too… ugg.

Still waiting on that Pomegranate 7-Up. We never got any here last year and I don’t think we’re getting it this year either. I miss Mountain Dew Supernova like crazy. I’d do anything to have that back. Double G–Oh my effing God. I HAVE to have that! I’ve been waiting for that for so long and they’ve added in so much extra cool stuff! Well, I think I know where some of my Christmas money is going. That tears it. I’m going on a snow run. Anybody else need any? I’m headed to CO to Dan’s place, then I’ll swing by Alyssa’s. It’s like 75 here right now. Just place your order with me and I’ll pick some up for you. It might take a while. As soon as I hit CO I’m going skiing. I’ve never been.

Ghosted by DJ D @ 11/07/2008 2:49 PM EST

DJ D: I miss SuperNova too. I wish they wouldv’e kept all 3 flavors.

Ghosted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/07/2008 3:22 PM EST

Yes, DJ D, please! I’ll trade you the cold for your 75 degrees, that way we both win. Supernova wasn’t bad, but since the bf is a voltage fan we didn’t ever have the other kind in the house, so that’s what I drank. You can still find all the flavors at some places around here, but it’s pretty hit or miss.

ARG!!!   So I went to Target today and was walking towards the registers, and I hear “Just move the Count Dracula to the back”  this of course gets my attention, I turn to see what exactly is going on, I see no Count Dracula, then I look down and I see boxes of Count CHOCULA, then the target employee says to the other employee once again ” Just move the Count Dracula to the back”  AND then one more time for good measure!!, some days I wish I was the type of guy who would smack a stranger, but I’m not…Now I’m trying to figure out who was dumber, The woman who kept calling it Count Dracula  or the woman that had to be reminded 3 times in a span of 30 seconds where to put the wrongly dubbed cereal?? it’s a toss up if ya ask me.

We had a pretty good freeze here last night. Now the hold-out trees will finally have their leaves change color and drop. Not quite enough crunching underfoot going on otherwise.

I just bought one of those mugs with a battery-operated mixer built-in for keeping your coffee or cocoa stirred up. Works really well, too. Made the marshmallows melt faster than usual, though.

Ghosted by kingklash @ 11/07/2008 6:51 PM EST

I had a very surreal holiday moment today. I’m (newly) an aide in a special ed class, and one of our students brought in Shrek the Halls to watch, and some leftover Halloween marshmallows for a snack. So we were watching that and eating those, and then at the same time I was coloring a picture of a turkey for the bulletin board. (Our kids can’t color, so we just do it ourselves when we want decorations.) It was definitely odd, but it helped me get past the election and new job chaos and remember that the holidays are coming. That was nice.

Also, getting paid $11.50 an hour to color and eat marshmallows was nice too. (Well, also to change diapers and stop kids from killing each other, but still.)

maybe we need to do an x-e exchange program. i want nothing of this cold. how can it be 70 for three days and then 32 and snowy all in the same week?

all it’s good for is coming home from work and getting under a blanket. which doesnt sound bad until you do it every night for like five months :) .

We had cold here, then weird and warm, and today rain and it looks like chilly temps are gonna set in. I could do without the blasted rain, though. Everybody at work was just complaining about how we all wanted to go to dinner, eat soup, rent a movie and curl up on the sofa. And not, you know, come back to work drenched and cold. :|

On the plus side, it is really nice to be drinking cocoa and peppermint coffee drinks again! :D

It won’t be Thanksgiving until I get Ma to make some of those little turkeys out of apples like when I was a kid. An apple for the body, and then using toothpicks, you skewer some raisins and arrange ‘em across the wide end for the bird’s tail feathers. Then, for the legs, about three raisins on a ‘pick, make two of those. Use a plain toothpick in back for a tripod leg so he can stand up. For the head, three more raisins get stabbed, then topped with an olive with a long piece of pimento hanging out for a wattle. Jab it in, and you got a funky little fruit gobbler for a snack. There are similar crafts found, internet-wise, but nostalgia dictates what one is fond of.

Mmmm… crisp apple turkey….

I had some Cranberry sierra mist the other week.  Time to drag out my old story of how me and the hubby got to test market it when we stayed with some friends in Florida…we were short on walking around money at the mall…and we took a survey for a movie trailer and got like 10 bucks each…then they asked my husband if he would take home 2 6 packs of this mystery cranberry soda…it was in a silver can with code numbers….we had to drink it and tell them over the phone which flavor we liked…one was akin to a fizzy pink lemonade taste with some cranberry flavor, and the other was what now has become a new holiday staple  Cranberry Splash Sierra Mist!  wooooo!  I know should have saved a can for ebay…who knew.

I haven’t seen the Holiday Hawk yet. Well, our local mall has Santa too.
I think Bill Goldberg portraing an evil Santa was mentioned here. I
know of another holiday movie that would go great with it. The
Hebrew Hammer. Andy Dick plays Santa’s psycho son.

Mandy_Reeves Puppies!  That reminds me I found a site a couple days ago that is like ustream.tv it’s called justin.tv there are some channels on it like ustream but it also has other channels that play movies and tv shows like there is a channel that plays the office.  Also a mystery science theater channel, horror movie, all sorts of movie channels.  They sometimes have a schedule sometimes not.  It sounds like a great idea for us.

To have an X-E channel!  Then on SNT we can have a scheduled movie.  I could cue up a channel that plays the same movie over and over again or two movies that are over and over or more.  I watched the shining 3 times earlier this week back to back on the horror movie channel talking to a group of people.  You can also go full screen and ignore the chat.  Matt can post a chat log on here so people that miss it can still read the dialogue.  I think it’s a great idea but I can see why Matt wouldn’t like it and other people.

Tonight I am playing around with djing software called virtual dj trying to wrap my head around it until SNL, I am going to watch that and catch up on the DVR’d stuff I have to watch.  I am wanting to do my first mix with it but I don’t know how much it will suck.   I don’t want to put my pride and glory on youtube and then have it totally and utterly suck.  But for a first timer (I have been playing around with it for a couple of months, but this is the first time I am going to finalize and record a song) it will probably really be bad but good for a learning experience.

Oh yeah I started this last couple weeks kind of half assed applying to jobs.  I am applying to receptionist, data entry types of jobs and also babysitting jobs.  Woot?
