Halloween Countdown ’08: Candy Corn Corn Pops!

I'm used to hating on Halloween by this point, but today is pretty great. The leaves are dead and colorful, and there's a familiar brisky crispness to the air that always feels exclusive to October 31st. Plus, for the first time in years, the streets around here are covered in trick-or-treaters, using their Joker and pirate getups to guarantee them a serious case of 24-hour diabetes.

I can't tell if I'm more like Uatu or D.B. Jefferies, but if there's ever a day when it's fun to just sit back and watch the world go round, Halloween is it.

Whatever you're doing tonight, have fun doing it. I hope you've enjoyed this year's Halloween Countdown. I know it was a bit (or a lot) scaled down in comparison to past years, but hey, at least I finished it this time. Which reminds me: here's the last review of the spooky season!

One of the interesting things about Kellogg's Candy Corn Corn Pops (and there are plenty of interesting things about it) is that it was produced and sold in 2001. I always get weirded out when I come across treasures that debuted after X-E was active. Granted, I basically only wrote about Transformers and He-Man in the site's early days, but it's strange to see something so perfectly X-Eish and know that I could've written about it when it was, you know, still available. But perhaps this is more interesting to me than it is to you.

Candy Corn Corn Pops really should've been called Candy Corn Pops, and I'll believe that to my dying day. The cereal was a limited edition, as all Halloween cereals are, but for whatever reason, it never managed to return for additional October stints.

Part of me understands why. Candy corn is generally accepted as vile, and few people would roll the dice on a cereal flavored like it. Still, a larger part of me -- let's say my torso and left leg -- is truly upset over the brand's short stay, as Candy Corn Corn Pops features some of the best box art ever to grace the breakfast aisle. LOOK at that guy. LOOK at him! Look at him, and look at the neat way they faded the lower green background into the upper yellow background. Any reason to link back to my lymon tribute is fucking awesome.

Even in the oddball-heavy sea of cereal mascots, a mad scientist with green skin and Norfin troll hair truly stands out. The front of the box looks more like pop art than product packaging, and if I had any soul at all, I'd trim away the side and back panels, frame the front, and hang the thing in a place where everyone on the planet can see it.

The cereal is seven-years-old, which is practically fresh when compared to most of the other old foods I find and review. I didn't want to waste the opportunity, so yes, I tried it. It really doesn't taste like candy corn at all.

I have no way to prove this, but the smell and flavor is somehow reminiscent of C-3P0's Cereal. There's an overwhelming marshmallow odor, but it tastes more like watered down Corn Pops than anything else. Maybe this is to be expected from seven-year-old cereal, but something's not quite right.

Whatever the actuality might be, the intention was a mix of regular Corn Pops and crazy, orange, candy corn-flavored Corn Pops. I wouldn't call this a flavor concept straight out of my wildest dreams, but admittedly, it looks pretty good in a bowl.

Cereal boxbacks are beyond important. I've said this before. Breakfast is better with complimentary reading material, and it's even more important with holiday edition cereals. Whether it's Christmas Crunch or Candy Corn Corn Pops, here's the blunt truth: Nobody picks a holiday edition cereal for its flavor. Even if you like the taste, you're really getting it because you want to inject a little seasonal joy into your morning meal. A holiday edition cereal that comes in a box dressed with holiday-themed riddles, puzzles and sight gags is pretty much mandatory.

Candy Corn Corn Pops packed a decent share of hot Halloween action on its boxback. The ghoulish word search puzzle was cool, but the list of wacky party tips above it was even better. Here are two of my favorite tips, verbatim:

Have a Candy Corn Corn Pops eating contest. They make a great snack, see who can eat the most pops in 60 seconds.

Use Candy Corn Corn Pops in a lottery game. Put one yellow cereal piece for each player into a paper bag. Now take one out and put in one orange Candy Corn Corn Pops. Each players takes a turn picking (without looking in the bag), the player who picks the orange cereal piece wins.

Okay, so the first one is just hilarious from a visual standpoint, but the second one reads like a journal entry from a seventeen-year-old documenting their first acid trip in realtime.

For those keeping score, this box of Candy Corn Corn Pops expired on July 29th, 2002.

Halloween is here, and soon, it'll be over. You know how it goes. All the decorations you love today, you'll probably hate tomorrow. Enjoy it while it lasts, but don't be too sad. Even better things are yet to come.

Mandi thoughts are with you…hang in there.

Great job with Halloween, Matt.

No Christmas until after thanksgiving, here!  Strict rule, no matter how tempting it is to break it.

(Exceptions are made with Little Debbie Christmas Tree Cakes.)

I hope Matt leaves the Halloween jukebox up all year round like he has  with the Crhistmas one. I love me some Halloween jukebox.

I wanted to write this message to tell you all the reason why I haven’t been around is we have been having technical issues with our internet this last few days.  It was tolerable on Halloween because I had plenty of tv and movies to watch, but now I feel hollow.  My best friend this morning got the modem to work with one computer (this one, it’s an older laptop we have that he uses that I upgraded from about 3 months ago) but he is trying to get the wireless router to work with it and so we’ll see.
But I just wanted to tell you I am not dead I just am having technical problems with the internet.  After we get it fixed I’ll tell you all about my Halloween.

Sorry for your loss Mandi. Losing someone at a holiday time is especially tough because you’re totally focused on happy things and you’re just not braced for that kind of painful shock. I lost someone around Christmas last year, and I’m going to try not to let it affect the holiday too much, but I’m sure it’s going to be on my mind.

Today we put away the last of our Halloween decorations, and I kept eyeing the Christmas box. We put them up Thanksgiving weekend, but with the later Thanksgiving this year they may go up a little earlier so I don’t feel cheated. It’s too soon now though – I’m starting a new job soon and I won’t be able to focus on Christmassy goodness until I’m settled in there, and plus I’m doing NaNoWriMo so I need to focus on that. But they had Christmas music on in Walmart yesterday while we were grocery shopping and it really made me want to start buying gifts, despite the fact that I’m mostly broke still! Subliminal messages really work, dammit! :(

Goob: I know how you feel. My old system, as you already know, went out earlier last month. I just got a new one a few nights ago. Love it too. I missed all the X-E fun. You included. ;)

Yeah it just really annoyed me that our town declared Halloween over so early, and even more annoying that the residents went with it.  I guess it was something that everyone knew about that read the paper or whatnot.  I ran into my cousin who was out with her kids and she said next year she was just going to have a Halloween party because it was just not worth going out for an hour.  I think its a shame, because back ten years or so ago many of the businesses would give out candy too and it was just a big deal in general, but now all the churches have stuff going on Halloween night to keep the kids off the streets.

Its a small town of like, 3,000 people… there’s not much to be concerned about here.  Its all so stupid.

Next year I’m just going to be even more extravagant, and watch out for kiddos at Walmart!  Beware of the ones not wearing costumes!

I guess I’ll start taking down the Halloween stuff tomorrow, but I sure am going to miss the Halloween tree.

DID YALL KNOW!?
That HELLOWEEN’s HALLOWEEN song has lyrics about the Great Pumpkin Charlie Brown?
Here’s the bit Im talking about
Someone’s sitting in a field,
Never giving yield
Sltting there with gleaming eyes
Waiting for big punpkin to arise
Bad luck if you get a stone
Like the good oId Charlie Brown
You think Linus could be right
The kids will say it’s just a stupid lie

Jeez Kitty, it sounds like you live in the town from Footloose.

I spent Halloween hiding up in a tree, yelling at trick-or-treaters in scary voices.

Went to the drugstore today for cheap candy….NO candy to be had, shelves were empty in the Halloween section, and a man was busy putting out SANTA figurines! Damn.  I wasn’t ready.

Chestnuts roasted by Muppet Baby @ 11/02/2008 11:10 PM

I bought some candy and decorations left over from Halloween dirt cheap at wallly world last night. And I mean DIRT CHEAP! Me HAPPY! =D

Chestnuts roasted by ULTRAMAN @ 11/03/2008 12:11 AM

My Wal-Mart wasn’t really that discounted on the Halloween goods yet, maybe half off.

Had a blast at Drac’s Ball last night, tho. Can’t wait for the New Years Eve ball. Open bar + Cruxshadows = orgasmically shitfaced Mystie.

Hey Matt, my store has the Christmas Cap’n Crunch cereal in stock!

Chestnuts roasted by Beckner @ 11/03/2008 12:59 AM

ULTRAMAN Thank you :)   I have a cord plugged into my laptop I have currently and from what I see I am back to normal as far as having internet is concerned.  Tomorrow we will set up the wireless router and I will really be back to normal.  Like I said before, Halloween was ok because I had a lot of things on the DVR to watch that I didn’t really need the internet.  I did feel bad not spending Halloween with you guys.  I mean I spent the build up with you, then I had to do Halloween by myself.  It’s funny though, I was talking to the customer service woman on the phone and the doorbell rang.  I said outloud oh shit! trick or treaters!  You have to come with me and wait on the phone when I give out candy!    She said that’s fine I’ll wait.  And she did wait!

She was on speaker phone and I held my big bowl of candy with my right hand and I leaned the bowl on my left and held my cell phone with the left too.  I said after the kids left I am so sorry about that and she laughed and said that’s ok.  That happened at least 2 times when I was on the phone with her.  She said it was the modem’s fault and not theirs which was a total cop out.  I hate it when they say that.  It was working perfectly before they turned it off and then back on again.

My Halloween was pretty good.  I am fortunate that the tv was working fine and everything scheduled to record recorded according to plan.  I have to really just look back at it at the beginning of next year to really make an opinion.  I watched a mix of DVR stuff and live tv.  Parts of movies, tv shows, the today show etc. while eating candy.  I just love that the night before and friday night most of the cable channels had something Halloweeny on them.  We had chili for dinner so the candy just went on top of that.  I learned last year any crap scary movie is so much better when you are shoveling candy in your mouth.  I think having a sweet candy mixed with chocolatey works best.  The sweet tart candy I got along with the gummy fruity body part candy didn’t do it for me.  I should of gotten another bag of the fun sized candy bar mix.  A lesson for the future.

I don’t really pay attention to kids outfits.  I am too focused on shoveling candy at them.  Even though this one kid, no older then 6-7 years old that was by himself had a classic ninja outfit on that made him so cool.  I don’t know if he requested it, or it was a hand me down.  I think he even had a plastic sword to go long with it but I don’t remember.  He had a slit for his eyes in a black outfit and a red belt.

I got a couple big groups then just a few kids.  I told the kids, take what you want!  Because they were only taking one.  I had a group that was about 10 kids or so I told them take a handful not just one!  And they cleaned me out of almost an entire bowlful.   The last 2 out of the group only got 1 and that made me feel bad.  I was talking to Harry on the phone and I was scrambling to get the other two bags and pour them into my big bowl but they were gone before I go to the door of course.  I opened the door and I said “hey I got more candy!” and one of the ones that didn’t get much of anything came back and got a couple good handfuls.  One girl said hey cool we get more then one!  And scooped up her candy with both hands.  I didn’t think that is what I meant but I let her get away with it.

The highlight of the trick or treaters was the last 2.  A boy and a girl I am assuming brother and sister had Halloween gift bags for some reason they were using for trick or treating bags.   Right after the boy put his share in his bag, the handle on one side broke.  His sister started busting up laughing!  Kind of like when Bart and/or Lisa thinks something is funny on the Simpsons.  I thought it was so funny.  I ran over to our pile of grocery bags and doubled up two and helped him scoop his bounty into the grocery bags.  He was so fortunate I helped him.  I threw away the bag he was using for him.  I think even his sister thanked me.  If you think about it candy is heavy.  But I felt like I was such a good samaritian when I did that.  His face lit up and he was so fortunate for my kindess.  It made me feel so great to be such a great person to him.  I bet he’ll remember that forever.

I was generous because I feel that is what giving candy to trick or treaters is about.  Giving away plenty of candy.  If you are going to do the 1 piece per kid thing then don’t give any away IMO.  That is way to stingy.  Unless it’s a pez dispenser or a full candy bar.  Let them get a handful of the small candy people.  I know you guys don’t do that but still.  I can’t imagine a kid filling up their bag if they get one piece per house.

I ended the night by skimming through movies on my computer.  Watching a scene or two of one and then a scene or two of another.  I do that sometimes.  I watched Pee Wee’s big Adventure, and Juno of all things.  I am riding the wave of Halloween still, I am not ready for Christmas just yet.

Even though I am looking forward to opening up my Sierra Mist Cranberry Splash, getting more Gingerbread pop tarts, getting some egg nog, getting out my copy of Bad Santa, watching National Lampoon’s Christmas Vacation for the millionth time etc. but I have a few scary movies still to watch.  And some Halloween peeps still to eat and another Caramel apple to eat.  I am one of those people to not offically jump into the Christmas season until after Thanksgiving so I have some time.

I used to HATE it when people gave out a SINGLE piece of candy.  And it was usually something small and krappi like ONE pepperiment or ONE tootsie roll.  That’s why I always buy the nice candy, like the bigger kit kat bars and fruit snack packets for the little kids (cuz some people that have toddlers and what not “tut tut” over the candy).  And everyone that comes to the door gets plenty.  Atleast that is what I’ve done in years past, cos I agree, it’s just horrible to give out candy and get a single tiny piece.

I still haven’t taken down the Halloween decorations.  I just can’t bear to put them up yet.  Even though I’ve had them out since mid September.

We barely had ANY houses around me with trick or treaters and theres a ton of kids in my neighborhood. Hardly anyone givin out candy either. I think the world has gotten too paranoid, when you think about it – its kind of a risk trusting hundreds of strangers to give you something safe to eat! I’d still take my kids out, but maybe switch their bag secretly with a big bag of store bought just to be safe. Too many creepy weirdos out there.

I’m probably the only one foolish enough to have noticed this but the Ghostly Word Finder on the back of the cereal box has a bonus “Treat”.  The word “Treat” is hidden and not mentioned in the list.

Matt, thanks for the many years of holiday cheer.
